What and why

How it was tested

  • npm run check passes
  • npm run build:action run and action/dist committed (if src/ changed)
  • docs/specs updated (if a contract in src/domain/types.ts or the policy changed)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Development-run metrics are now collected in a shared location across linked worktrees, with each run associated with its working directory.
    • Metrics reports now highlight command types with median runtimes above a configurable threshold as potential parallelism candidates.
    • Metrics recording supports arbitrary run types, including repeatable commands, evaluations, and benchmarks.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance covers shared metrics, recording runs, and interpreting parallelism candidates.

error-path and others added 2 commits October 23, 2026 15:43
record-run.mjs, record-eval-run.mjs and metrics-report.mjs each resolved
.dev-metrics/runs.jsonl relative to the current checkout, so every worktree got
its own copy and pruning worktrees deleted all recorded runs. They now share
one resolveMetricsFile() helper (scripts/metrics-path.mjs) that points at
<git-common-dir>/opendrs-dev-metrics/runs.jsonl by default, overridable with
OPENDRS_METRICS_FILE, falling back to the old path when git is unavailable.

Also: record each entry's worktree path so per-branch timings stay
distinguishable in the shared file, and add a metrics-report.mjs section
flagging kinds whose median duration exceeds a threshold (default 10 min,
--slow-threshold-min to override) as parallelism candidates.

No old .dev-metrics/runs.jsonl existed anywhere in this clone or its
worktrees to merge.

vitest.config.ts only includes tests/**/*.test.ts, so the scripts/*.test.mjs
files added for metrics-path.mjs and metrics-report.mjs never ran in `npm
test` or CI. Move them to tests/scripts/*.test.ts (vitest describe/it, same
convention as tests/domain, tests/model, etc.) and add sibling .d.mts
declaration files for the two .mjs modules so tsc --noEmit can type-check
the imports without turning on allowJs project-wide.

📝 Walkthrough

The metrics scripts now resolve a shared ledger path, record the current worktree, and report kinds whose median duration exceeds a configurable threshold. The maintenance documentation describes the updated ledger and report behavior.

Changes: Dev metrics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve and write shared metrics
scripts/metrics-path.*, scripts/record-run.mjs, scripts/record-eval-run.mjs, scripts/run-check.mjs, tests/scripts/metrics-path.test.ts, docs/maintaining.md
resolveMetricsFile selects an environment override, the Git common directory, or the local fallback. Recorder scripts append entries with the current working directory as worktree. Tests cover the path choices, including linked worktrees. The documentation describes the shared ledger and free-form run kinds.
Calculate and display slow kinds
scripts/metrics-report.*, tests/scripts/metrics-report.test.ts, docs/maintaining.md
The report adds parallelism candidates for kinds whose median duration exceeds the configured threshold. It retains the existing totals, slowest-run, and trend reports. Tests cover the median threshold behavior.

Change: Feature

Possibly related PRs

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 30dcc

The new linked-worktree test fails in CI when the runner has no Git identity, which blocks npm test until the fixture sets one. The new slow-kind report can also miss a slow eval kind when some runs have no recorded duration. Fix both before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 30dcc

The change is confined to development telemetry and does not introduce a demonstrated privilege escalation or external attack path. Shared storage broadens local metadata visibility and concurrent-writer exposure, while durability and recovery guarantees remain unspecified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The default exposure is a clone-wide local telemetry file containing existing command and branch metadata plus newly recorded absolute working-directory metadata. An environment override can redirect reads and appends to other filesystem locations accessible to the invoking process; the inspected scripts add no privilege elevation or network export.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new destination is controlled by process environment and Git repository context, without a path allowlist. Git lookup uses a fixed argument array rather than shell interpolation. The wrapper's caller-selected command execution predates this PR; ledger contents are consumed as report data, not executable instructions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Ledger resolution, directory creation, and append failures remain contained by the recorders' best-effort error handling. The command wrapper still exits using the wrapped operation's computed status, so telemetry-write failure does not become a new build or test gate.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Fix/shared dev metrics" matches the main change: dev-loop metrics storage moves to a shared resolver under the Git common directory, with OPENDRS_METRICS_FILE override and fallback, plus related report and test changes. It is brief, but it names the primary subject. It uses a branch-style "Fix/" prefix and the vague word "Fix" does not say what was fixed, so the title is only partially specific.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description contains only the template headings and unchecked checklist items. It has no text under "What and why" that explains the shared metrics resolver, the Git common directory storage, the OPENDRS_METRICS_FILE override, the worktree field, or the new parallelism-candidates report. The "How it was tested" section lists no results, and the checklist items remain unchecked. The PR objectives state that no test results are checked or reported. The description is therefore largely incomplete.

Resolution

Add a "What and why" section that explains the shared metrics ledger, the resolution order (OPENDRS_METRICS_FILE, then the Git common directory, then .dev-metrics/runs.jsonl), the new worktree field, the computeSlowKinds report and its --slow-threshold-min option, and the move of the metrics tests under tests/. Under "How it was tested", state which checks were run and their results, and check the boxes that apply. Confirm whether src/ changed, because this decides whether npm run build:action and action/dist apply. Confirm whether docs/specs applies. The changed files suggest src/ and docs/specs may not be affected, so mark those items as not applicable.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 28.57% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 7 functions across 9 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

CI has no global gitconfig, so the test's raw `git commit --allow-empty`
exited 128 for missing identity (same root cause the 2026-10-23 e8a0d0e fix
addressed elsewhere). Build the test repo with tests/helpers/repo.ts
makeRepo(), which writes user.name/email into .git/config, instead of raw
git init/commit.

Reproduced the CI failure and verified the fix with:
HOME=$(mktemp -d) GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM=1 GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL=/dev/null npx vitest run tests/scripts/

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Calculate the maximum without spreading the full group.

The shared ledger is append-only. If a slow kind accumulates more durations than V8 accepts as function arguments, Math.max(...durations) throws and the report prints no results. Calculate maxMs with a loop or reduction so report availability does not depend on the group’s argument count. V8 enforces an argument-count limit. (chromium.googlesource.com)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude runs without a measured duration from the median.

scripts/record-eval-run.mjs writes durationMs: null when the aggregate has no numeric durationSeconds. This fallback counts each such run as zero. One 20-minute eval and two evals without durations therefore produce a zero-minute median, so the report omits a slow kind. Include only measured durations in the median and measured count; skip kinds with no measured durations.
