Summary

The publish workflow lived at .github/cd.yaml, outside .github/workflows/. GitHub only runs workflows from that folder, so it never ran. Nothing has been published since 1.1.3 (npm and GitHub Packages both still say latest: 1.1.3), and 1.2.0 and 1.2.1 are merged but unreleased.

This replaces it with .github/workflows/release.yml, modelled on firefliesai/n8n-nodes-fireflies#26. On a push to main, or a dispatch from it:

  1. check: reads the version and asks npm whether it's published. Only E404 counts as "no"; any other npm error fails the run. It reads the vX.Y.Z tag and release, then decides eligible: npm doesn't have the version yet, or the tag points at this run's commit. A tag on another commit while npm lacks the version fails the run before anything is published.
  2. build, only when eligible: npm ci, build, test and npm pack, with read-only permissions and no publish credentials.
  3. publish: publishes that tarball to npm with trusted publishing (OIDC) and --provenance. No NPM_TOKEN is needed. The job has no checkout and runs no install or lifecycle scripts. It reports published_now only when its own npm publish ran.
  4. tag, only when published_now: records the commit npm published from as vX.Y.Z.
  5. publish-github-packages and github-release: run when this run published, or when npm already had the version and the tag points at this commit. GitHub Packages gets the same tarball. The release is titled from .github/release-notes/<version>.md plus GitHub's generated PR list. Only the highest stable version becomes Latest, and prereleases are marked as such. The release follows npm; a GitHub Packages failure doesn't hold it back.

Dist-tags: a prerelease goes under its identifier (rc, beta, …), or next when npm's semver parser says the identifier is a range. A stable version older than the registry's latest goes under previous, so neither moves latest.

Recovery: a later push, or a dispatch once main has moved on, does nothing for a version npm already has from another commit. To finish a half-done release, re-run the original run; a re-run keeps its commit. If npm published but the tag job didn't run, create the tag by hand at that commit, then re-run. This is documented in .github/release-notes/README.md.

Also in this PR:

  • .github/release-notes/1.2.1.md, the notes for the first release since 1.1.3. ci.yml now fails a PR whose version has no valid notes file.
  • The 1.2.1 changelog entry is dated, and 1.2.0 is marked as never published.
  • All actions in the new workflow pinned to SHAs.
  • --ignore-scripts on publish. This matters because package.json has a script named publish, which npm would run as a lifecycle hook and publish a second time.

⚠️ Before merging: merging this publishes 1.2.1

  1. npm trusted publisher. On npmjs.com, open @firefliesai/fireflies-node-sdk → Settings → Trusted Publisher → GitHub Actions. Set repository firefliesai/fireflies-node-sdk and workflow release.yml. Without it, the publish job fails with a 401/403 and nothing else runs. Re-run it once the publisher is configured.
  2. GitHub Packages access. 1.1.x was published by hand, so the package may not grant this repo's Actions write access. If that job gets a 403, add this repo with Write under the package's Manage Actions access, then re-run. The npm publish and the GitHub release don't wait on it.
  3. API readiness. 1.2.1's createBite sends transcript_id. The API change that adds it is in production.

Verification

  • actionlint 1.7.7: clean on both workflows.
  • I checked the eligibility step and the dist-tag selection against stubbed gh/npm, covering the cases raised in review: the 1.2.1 bootstrap, a re-run of the publishing run, a re-run of an older run after another commit published, a later push, a foreign tag, prerelease identifiers including range-like ones, an older stable version, and registry errors.
  • .github/release-notes/check.sh prints v1.2.1 — Rate limit handling & full API coverage.
  • npm run build OK; npm test: 206 passed. npm pack --dry-run builds @firefliesai/fireflies-node-sdk@1.2.1, 22 files.
  • The workflow itself can only be exercised by merging to main.

…on merge to main

The publish workflow lived at .github/cd.yaml, outside .github/workflows, so
GitHub never ran it and nothing has been published since 1.1.3. Replace it
with .github/workflows/release.yml, modelled on n8n-nodes-fireflies: when
package.json carries a version npm does not have, it builds and tests once,
publishes the tarball with npm trusted publishing and provenance, publishes
the same tarball to GitHub Packages, then creates the vX.Y.Z tag and release
from .github/release-notes/<version>.md. Each step re-checks before acting,
so pushes without a version bump are no-ops and failed runs can be re-run.

CI fails a pull request whose version has no valid notes file. Adds the
1.2.1 notes and dates the 1.2.1 changelog entry.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request replaces the previous deployment workflow with release automation. It adds release-note checks to CI, builds and publishes package versions to npm and GitHub Packages, and creates GitHub releases. It also adds v1.2.1 release notes and updates the changelog.

Changes

Release automation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release notes and validation
.github/release-notes/1.2.1.md, .github/release-notes/README.md, .github/release-notes/check.sh, .github/workflows/ci.yml, CHANGELOG.md
Adds v1.2.1 release notes and documents the versioned notes format and release recovery rules. CI validates release notes for the package version. The changelog dates v1.2.1 and notes that v1.2.0 was not published to npm.
Release checks and package build
.github/workflows/release.yml, .github/release-notes/npm-published.sh
The release workflow checks registry, tag, and GitHub release state. For eligible runs, it builds, tests, packs, and uploads the package tarball.
Package registry publishing
.github/workflows/release.yml, .github/cd.yaml
The release workflow conditionally publishes the tarball to npm and GitHub Packages, selects dist-tags based on the version, and disables lifecycle scripts during publishing. The prior deployment workflow is removed.
Tag and GitHub release creation
.github/workflows/release.yml
The workflow creates the version tag at the publishing commit and creates an eligible GitHub release with checked-in and generated notes.

🔍 PR Complexity Assessment

🟡 Risk Score: 4/10

[████░░░░░░]

📝 Summary

This PR fixes a broken CI/CD workflow by moving it from an incorrect location to the proper .github/workflows/ directory, adds npm trusted publishing with provenance, and sets up automated GitHub releases with proper release notes validation.

📊 Lines Analysis

Metric Count

Production Code 470
Test Code 0

💡 Recommendation

Review the workflow YAML carefully to ensure the trusted publishing configuration and conditional logic are correct. Verify the npm trusted publisher is configured before merging. Low runtime risk since this only affects CI/CD, not application code.

…-tag

Both publish jobs pass an explicit --tag: a prerelease goes under its
identifier (rc, beta, or next), and a stable version older than the
registry's current latest goes under previous, so neither moves latest.
GitHub releases for prerelease versions are marked --prerelease.

@sudotong went through the workflow, the scripts and the Devin and CodeRabbit threads. The setup looks right to me. Permissions are empty at the top and scoped per job, id-token: write only sits on the npm job and that job never checks out or installs, everything is pinned to SHAs, the trigger is push to main only, and the tarball that gets published is the one build tested. --ignore-scripts for the publish script in package.json is a nice one to have caught. A merge with no version bump doesn't republish to npm either.

Left one comment inline, about what a later push does when the bump run only half finished. The Latest race on two quick bumps is already covered in the Devin thread, so I'm not raising it again.

Comment thread .github/workflows/release.yml Resolved
…m has it

A later push or dispatch could otherwise publish newer code to GitHub
Packages under an already-published version, or tag a later commit than
npm's provenance. check now outputs eligible (this commit set the version,
or npm does not have it yet); build, GitHub Packages and the release require
it, and a merge with nothing to release skips the build.

…inish

The first release (1.2.1) comes from a merge that does not change the
version, so a re-run after npm published could never finish GitHub Packages
or the release. A tag job now creates vX.Y.Z at the run's commit right after
the npm publish, and check treats a run whose commit the tag points at as
eligible.

@sudotong went through the two commits since my last review. Recording the npm commit as vX.Y.Z and gating build, GitHub Packages and the release on eligible closes both paths I raised for the normal flow. A later push or a dispatch after main moves on now does nothing, the release job still refuses a tag on another commit, and build skips on a merge with nothing to release. The bootstrap case Devin raised is covered by the tag too.

One gap left inline. It comes from the "this commit changed the version" half of eligible, which lets an old run back in once another commit has published. Everything else looks good to me.

Comment thread .github/workflows/release.yml Resolved
Comparing package.json with the previous commit kept a version-bump commit
eligible after npm had published the version from another commit, so a re-run
of a red bump run could publish different code to GitHub Packages. The vX.Y.Z
tag already records the commit npm published from; eligibility is now 'npm
lacks the version, or the tag points at this commit'.

…hed tags it

check now stops when npm lacks the version but vX.Y.Z points at another
commit, before an immutable publish. The publish job reports published_now
only when its own npm publish ran, and tag, GitHub Packages and the release
require it (or a tag at this commit when npm already had the version), so a
run that lost a publish race no longer claims the version.

@sudotong went through the two commits since my last review. Dropping the version comparison closes the gap I left inline, a re-run of the red bump run now sees the tag on the other commit and stands down. published_now also covers the "re-run failed jobs" path, where check's old published=false output gets reused and publish succeeds by skipping. Before this, publish.result == 'success' would have let that run push its own tarball to GitHub Packages. The foreign tag check before the npm publish looks right too, since this workflow only tags after publishing. On Devin's stranded release thread, a manual tag and re-run is the trade-off I suggested, so that's fine by me.

Two things before merge, neither is code. The npm trusted publisher has to be set up on npmjs.com first, otherwise the 1.2.1 run goes red on the publish job. And I'd still like us to decide whether we keep the GitHub Packages mirror at all, since nothing in the org installs the SDK from it. If we drop it, the 403 on the first run and the mismatch cases go away with it.
