Summary

This is the first slice of M2 in Echo: Causal Commitments and Authenticated WARP Readings, revision 2: an opt-in commitment profile that uses M1's application root as a worldline's committed state_root. It sits behind a new experimental feature, application_root_profile, which is off by default and implies application_root_shadow. Worldlines default to the legacy profile, whose roots, commit hashes and receipts are unchanged.

Builds on #922 (M1), now merged.

What changes

  • CommitmentProfile is either LegacyReachableV1 (the default) or ApplicationRadixV0.
    • It is chosen with WorldlineState::with_commitment_profile before the worldline is registered.
    • It travels with M1's trie, so rollback markers, replay bases and checkpoints, forks and the runtime commit guard all carry it.
    • Nothing infers a profile from a root's bytes.
  • An application-profile worldline commits H("echo.state-root.application-radix.v0" || application_root).
    • The tag keeps the value domain-separated from every legacy root, so no historical state_root is reinterpreted.
    • The v2 and v3 commit-hash recipes are unchanged.
  • The engine's runtime commit advances the worldline's trie from the commit's complete write set and commits that root, instead of calling compute_state_root_with. The Action path already uses the profile-aware WorldlineState::state_root.
  • Verification uses the worldline's own recipe. Replay, readings at earlier coordinates, import candidates, playback cursors, provenance initial boundaries and checkpoint restores now call the worldline's recipe (recomputed_state_root, state_root_of) where they called the legacy function. With the feature off, these are the legacy function.

F5 bench: same host, branch and build, five rounds each

Tier Profile Append p50 Per append Replay p50
S legacy-reachable-v1 16.56 ms 0.0906 ms 10.34 ms
S application-radix-v0 9.34 ms 0.0441 ms 2.71 ms
M legacy-reachable-v1 5,630.16 ms 1.0993 ms 5,551.82 ms
M application-radix-v0 272.04 ms 0.0542 ms 99.17 ms

The scene_fixtures runner reports both profiles when the feature is enabled. Both validate under the fixture's own outcome checks.

Tests

Test What it shows
coordinator::…::application_profile_commits_the_tagged_application_root_and_verifies_only_under_it Committed roots are the tagged application root, never the legacy root. The initial boundary is computed under the profile. Replay succeeds under the profile and fails under the legacy profile. A forked strand inherits the profile.
application_root_profile_tests::f5_validates_under_the_application_profile F5 validates under both profiles, and the two commit different roots
trusted_runtime_host_loop_tests::application_profile_history_recovers_only_under_its_profile A filesystem-WAL history recovers under its own profile and is refused under the legacy profile
executable_operation_pipeline_tests::application_profile_actions_commit_and_recover 70 Actions built at the genesis boundary commit, with the scoped exception corroborating the genesis origin under the profile, and recovery agrees

Checks

  • Full suite: warp-core with native_rule_bootstrap,trusted_runtime,host_test,application_root_profile,delta_validate passes 2,019 tests. The only failure is special_files_are_rejected_before_a_read_attempt, which hits a local TMPDIR length limit and fails the same way on main.
  • Targeted: the three integration targets listed above pass under delta_validate, and tier M passes in release.
  • Clippy -D warnings: passes with the profile feature (--lib --tests --benches), for the legacy configuration with --all-targets and delta_validate, and for the default library.
  • Format: cargo fmt --all -- --check passes.
  • CI: test and clippy steps added for the feature.

Not in this slice (gates from revision 2, and decisions for the owner)

  1. A durable profile descriptor. The profile is part of the host's worldline registration; it is not written to the WAL, provenance codecs or WSC. A mismatch fails replay and recovery as a root mismatch rather than a typed profile error. Adding a descriptor needs a codec version and approval of the domain strings.
  2. The full boundary seal (§8.5), with its history root and cross-reading validation. That is M3/M4 work.
  3. Ports and warp-instance headers. They are not covered by the application reading.
  4. Migration from legacy histories. The §15.1 rules apply.
  5. Cross-host exchange tests.

The durable contract is in docs/topics/ApplicationRoot.md (Experimental commitment profile); docs/spec/merkle-commit.md links to it.

Behind application_root_profile (implies application_root_shadow), a
worldline registered with CommitmentProfile::ApplicationRadixV0 commits
H("echo.state-root.application-radix.v0" || application_root) as its
state_root: the engine advances the worldline trie from the commit write
set instead of walking the graph. The profile travels with the trie through
rollback, replay bases, forks and the commit guard. Replay, earlier
readings, imports, playback, initial boundaries and checkpoint restores
compute the worldline own recipe; a history replayed or recovered under the
other profile fails. Legacy worldlines are the default and unchanged.

F5 tier M: append 5,630 -> 272 ms, replay 5,552 -> 99 ms.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds an opt-in ApplicationRadixV0 commitment profile that derives worldline state roots from a domain-tagged application root. The selected profile is used across runtime commits, replay, forks, validation, and recovery. The default LegacyReachableV1 profile remains available.

Possibly related issues

  • flyingrobots/jedit#358 — This change propagates the selected commitment profile through replay and forks, which relates to deterministic replay and declared identity. Rename, copy, and import-policy checks are not covered by the described changes.
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b27b6

Opt-in application-profile snapshots can report the wrong commitment root, and replay lacks an independent root check. Correct those commitment boundaries before merging; strengthen the profile-mismatch test so it checks the intended refusal.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b27b6

The experimental profile is off by default and preserves legacy behavior, but an initial-frontier observation still calculates its identity using the legacy recipe. This leaves a public reading path inconsistent with the worldline’s selected commitment profile. Recovery checks provide useful containment, while incremental-root validation has remaining assurance limits.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: An application-profile worldline without a last snapshot exposes a legacy-derived frontier identity. Engine::snapshot_for_state unconditionally calculates the legacy root and derives its synthetic commit hash from that root; ObservationService uses this fallback for frontier Head, Snapshot, and QueryView readings. The exported identity therefore disagrees with the selected application commitment recipe. The fallback predates this PR, but application-profile inputs and the resulting contract inconsistency are new. EmptyFrontier witnesses limit this to synthetic frontier evidence rather than demonstrating acceptance of a forged retained commit.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated identity inconsistency is confined to explicitly opted-in worldlines and consumers of synthetic frontier snapshots when no last snapshot exists. Stored snapshots bypass that fallback. The inspected evidence does not establish cross-tenant access, additional privileges, or alteration of retained commit evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A caller can request an initial-frontier reading for a registered application-profile worldline and receive a legacy-derived root and synthetic commit hash. Those values flow into Head or Snapshot payloads and the observation identity; QueryView observers also receive the incorrect resolved basis. This is an integrity-contract mismatch, not a demonstrated authorization bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Candidate graph data does not select a profile through root bytes: state_root_of uses the receiving worldline’s configured recipe. Replay checks the initial boundary before proceeding and subsequently compares state roots and receipt-aware commit hashes with retained expectations. These controls reject mismatching-profile histories rather than silently reinterpreting them.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Application-profile recomputed_state_root can reuse the current incremental trie rather than independently rebuilding it. Runtime commits install their advanced trie as current, skip coordinator advancement, and do not enter the existing application-trie rebuild assertion. This limits independent divergence detection on that path; inspected coordinator tests do compare representative committed roots with full rebuilds, and no concrete divergent mutation was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Add an independent application-trie rebuild comparison to the runtime application-profile path under delta_validate, before the advanced trie is accepted as current. This would strengthen detection of commitment drift without requiring a production full-graph walk on every commit.

Use the worldline commitment profile in snapshot_for_state.

compute_state_root always computes the legacy reachable-state root. For ApplicationRadixV0, WorldlineState::state_root() computes the tagged application root instead. Use the profile-aware method so the snapshot matches the worldline history.

- Engine::snapshot_for_state uses the worldline's own root recipe, so a
  synthesized frontier snapshot of an application-profile worldline
  advertises the tagged application root, not the legacy root.
- Under delta_validate, the runtime commit asserts that the advanced

- Document that recomputed_state_root reads the current application trie
  (replay stays incremental) while state_root_of rebuilds.
- Assert the exact refusal in the legacy-profile replay and WAL recovery
