Plain-English Walkthrough

TL;DR

Failed lexical bindings retain their original cause while independent errors remain visible in covered compiler paths. [claim:behavior, confidence:1.00]

Walkthrough

The local environment stores unavailable-name markers separately from typed bindings. Dependent reads cannot produce a replacement type or Core value. Independent operands, request clauses, supplied helper arguments and branch statements remain checkable. A surviving yield branch is checked against its available annotation even when its peer is poisoned. The UTF-8 primitive checks its operand in intrinsic context so a missing outer type cannot suppress independent byte-family errors. The complete recovery requirement remains planned; these regressions do not certify every compiler path. [claim:boundaries, confidence:0.99]

Regular merge 93890a51fcfb5761bd09e871710df967cd000421 incorporates main's result-budget validation from merged #241. Both contracts remain in the compiler topic shelf and have distinct test IDs. [claim:integration, confidence:0.99]

Validation

The review regressions were observed RED before their fixes, then GREEN. The current merged head passes full CARGO_TARGET_DIR=/Users/james/Library/Caches/jim-integration/edict-pr247-target-20261019 cargo +1.96.0 xtask verify, exit 0. Each worktree now owns a separate target directory. Earlier shared-target observations are historical because workspace artifacts could contaminate checks across worktrees. [claim:local-validation, confidence:1.00]

Latest regression command: cargo +1.96.0 test --locked -p edict-syntax --test binding_recovery. Named regression witnesses: unavailable_outer_annotations_preserve_utf8_family_errors in crates/edict-syntax/tests/binding_recovery.rs#1498@93890a51fcfb5761bd09e871710df967cd000421, poisoned_yield_arm_keeps_the_surviving_annotation_mismatch in crates/edict-syntax/tests/binding_recovery.rs#1520@93890a51fcfb5761bd09e871710df967cd000421. The complete current-head local gate includes these tests. The retained RED logs precede the implementation fixes; the gate and consumer rebuild follow the regular main merge.

A fresh public build of the genuine Jedit ReplaceRange application using this exact compiler head reproduces executable package SHA-256 31ed2bf3121d8ada879e2f1dee15e793a0106cd8c034beaad4dd3c4995e9629a and independent verification report SHA-256 3dab6a7de887acb0422a881c58130932819d16ecf8577a503d33031036732c86. The compiler binary hash was stable across the build. This establishes existing pure-reference compatibility; full-size rope, effects, admission and recovery remain separate work. [claim:consumer, confidence:1.00]

Hosted CI and current-head independent review are required before merge. Older review responses apply only to their recorded commits.

Documentation impact: compiler-spine contract/test plan, language reference where applicable, and CHANGELOG. No dependency or executable effect capability is added.

Review in Change Stack →

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved compiler diagnostics after failed local bindings: dependent name errors are suppressed while independent errors across records, branches, expressions, calls, loops, and later statements remain visible.
    • Failed bindings no longer produce fabricated values. Failed returns are distinguished from missing returns, and invalid constructs do not produce compiled output.
    • Improved checking of multiple operands and arguments so errors can be reported together.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance and test-plan coverage for failed-binding recovery and diagnostic behavior. A production-path audit and final review remain outstanding.

Walkthrough

The type checker tracks failed lexical bindings separately from valid bindings. It suppresses dependent name errors, retains independent errors across records, branches, and operands, and distinguishes a failed return from an absent return.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a1f05

The compiler recovery changes are sound overall. In two cases, the compiler reports diagnostics incorrectly: an unresolvable annotation hides bare-literal width errors in comparisons, and a failing then branch causes an extra width error in the else branch. Neither case produces invalid output. Fix these cases and remove the review-status wording from the topic docs as follow-ups, or before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a1f05

The inspected recovery paths preserve rejection of invalid programs and do not turn failed bindings into executable values. No introduced security failure was established. Risk remains low rather than minimal because the complete recovery audit is still outstanding.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is caller-supplied source or AST entering compiler checking and potentially affecting returned Core. Recovery markers are transient compiler state, not authority-bearing output. The inspected evidence does not establish deployment-wide or tenant-wide exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Continued diagnostic checking does not itself authorize output: accumulated compiler errors cause type_check to return an error, preventing compile_to_core from lowering that result. Successful lowering still performs Core type-integrity validation. These rejection controls are unchanged from the PR base.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Unavailable-context and intrinsic-context checks save and restore the prior context flag. Yield-shape probing checks a cloned checker and environment rather than publishing probe diagnostics; authoritative branch checking remains responsible for construction and rejection.

Explanation

The current head satisfies the coding requirements in issue #240. LocalEnvironment tracks failed names by lexical scope, failed reads do not add unresolved-name errors, and invalid composites do not produce Core values. The tests cover a failed call with a dependent receipt, chained and nested bindings, branch isolation, invalid shadowing, independent expression and statement errors, failed and absent returns, calls, requests, annotations, loops, slices, effects, predicates, records, and yield branches. The valid control retains the committed canonical Core bytes. The reported final verification also passes. Pending independent review and a broader audit are workflow or review status, not a demonstrated unmet coding criterion.

4129-4131: check_ident returns None for a poisoned name without recording any diagnostic. Some callers treat None as "a diagnostic was already recorded."

This is correct for the dependent-error suppression contract. It is safe only because the poisoning let already recorded its cause. One path does not record that cause: infer_yield_block_env discards checker errors on a cloned checker. Suppose a poisoned name enters the cached inferred_yield_envs that way. Its cause would then be missing. That function returns None on any new error, so a poisoned environment is never cached. The invariant holds.

4193-4213: Concatenation recovery reports a mismatch for a non-string operand only when the other operand failed. A String + Bytes pair beside a failure produces no error for the family mismatch. This is acceptable because the composite already failed.

2396-2406: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

A failed rebinding of a name that already exists in the same scope leaves the old binding in place and then poisons it. Confirm that this cannot happen during surface-validated compilation.

Suppose previous_id == current_id because the let failed. The name is then poisoned, which matches the intended behavior. A successful let always calls next_local, so the new ID differs from the previous one. The logic is sound. One condition is fragile: the code infers failure from the LocalRef.id value. If a future path rebinds a name to the same ID, a successful binding is poisoned without any diagnostic. A private success flag returned from check_pure_let and check_effectful_let would state the intent directly.

1. Executive Summary & Diff Scope

PR #247 addresses Issue #240 by introducing private lexical failure tracking via LocalEnvironment in crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs, intending to suppress dependent identifier errors when a let binding fails while preserving independent sibling and subsequent statement diagnostics.

While the core tracking mechanics (LocalEnvironment, ID comparison in check_let_stmt, and saw_return tracking) succeed for basic let bindings and record expressions, an adversarial audit reveals that compiler recovery is incomplete and inconsistent across multiple expressions and statement constructs. Most critically:

  1. In obstruction reason payload shorthand (check_reason_payload), the compiler fails to check env.poisoned.contains(name), emitting a spurious UnresolvedType diagnostic for poisoned locals.
  2. In annotated if-yield bindings (check_branch_yield_let), a failed condition aborts early, completely suppressing independent diagnostics in both yield branches.
  3. In logical predicates (check_predicate), short-circuiting with ? suppresses independent RHS errors when the LHS fails.
  4. Additional short-circuiting returns in check_require_stmt, check_external_action_request, check_compare_predicate, check_pure_conditional, and call argument checking silently drop independent errors.

2. Verified Findings

[P2] Spurious Secondary Diagnostic in Obstruction Payload Shorthand

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2352-2361 (also flagged in Codex review thread PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmq)
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingInitializer;
    require true else domain.Failure({ failed });

    In check_reason_payload, shorthand entries execute:
    let Some((local, _)) = env.get(name) else {
        self.errors.push(error(
            CompilerStage::TypeCheck,
            CompilerErrorKind::UnresolvedType,
            format!("obstruction reason payload field `{name}` has no binding"),
            *span,
        ));
        accepted = false;
        continue;
    };
    Because failed was poisoned by the failed let, env.get("failed") returns None. Unlike normal record shorthand in crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:4275 (if !env.poisoned.contains(name)), check_reason_payload does not inspect env.poisoned. Consequently, a secondary UnresolvedType diagnostic is emitted for failed, directly violating the requirement that poisoned locals suppress dependent identifier errors.
  • Evidence: Verified by inspection of lines 2352–2361 vs lines 4273–4284.
  • Suggested Fix:
    let Some((local, _)) = env.get(name) else {
        accepted = false;
        if !env.poisoned.contains(name) {
            self.errors.push(error(
                CompilerStage::TypeCheck,
                CompilerErrorKind::UnresolvedType,
                format!("obstruction reason payload field `{name}` has no binding"),
                *span,
            ));
        }
        continue;
    };

[P2] Annotated Yield Binding Skips Branch Diagnostics When Condition Fails

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2480-2482 (also flagged in Codex review thread PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmv)
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    let chosen: Bool = if failed {
        let x = missingLeft;
        yield true;
    } else {
        let y = missingRight;
        yield false;
    };

    In check_branch_yield_let:
    let Some(predicate) = self.check_predicate(pred, env) else {
        return;
    };
    When pred evaluates to None (due to the poisoned failed local), check_branch_yield_let immediately returns. It never calls check_branch_yield_blocks. Both missingLeft and missingRight are silently suppressed, whereas standard statement if branches (compiler.rs:1785-1815) check both branch blocks even when predicate is None.
  • Evidence: Verified by comparing check_branch_yield_let lines 2480–2504 against check_if_stmt lines 1785–1814.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Check check_branch_yield_blocks regardless of whether predicate is Some, and only decline to construct the CoreNode::Branch if predicate or branches failed.

[P2] Short-Circuit ? in check_predicate Suppresses Independent RHS Diagnostics

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:3558-3570 (also flagged in Codex review thread PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmz)
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    if failed && missingSibling { ... }

    In check_predicate:
    Expr::Binary { op: BinOp::And, lhs, rhs, .. } => Some(CorePredicate::All(vec![
        self.check_predicate(lhs, env)?,
        self.check_predicate(rhs, env)?,
    ])),
    Because lhs is poisoned, self.check_predicate(lhs, env) returns None. The ? causes check_predicate to return immediately, never checking rhs. The independent error in missingSibling is completely hidden.
  • Evidence: Verified in lines 3558–3570.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Expr::Binary { op: BinOp::And, lhs, rhs, .. } => {
        let left = self.check_predicate(lhs, env);
        let right = self.check_predicate(rhs, env);
        Some(CorePredicate::All(vec![left?, right?]))
    }

[P2] Early Return in check_require_stmt Skips Else Failure Arm Checking

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2208-2210
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    require failed else domain.NonexistentFailure({ reason: missingReason });

    In check_require_stmt:
    let Some(predicate) = self.check_predicate(predicate, env) else {
        return;
    };
    let Some(arm) = self.check_require_else_arm(arm, env) else {
        return;
    };
    When predicate fails, check_require_else_arm is never evaluated. Any invalid obstruction reason kind or missing payload fields in the else arm remain hidden.
  • Evidence: Verified in lines 2208–2213.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Evaluate let arm = self.check_require_else_arm(arm, env); even when predicate.is_none(), returning without pushing a CoreNode::Require if either fails.

[P3] Stmt::ExternalActionRequest Fails Without Poisoning Request Binder

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2033-2090
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    request req: NonexistentRequest = ...;
    let useReq = req;

    In check_external_action_request, if the request fails (e.g. at line 2033 type_ref_shape, line 2043 shape mismatch, line 2048 operation check, or line 2064), the function executes return; without ever calling env.poison(name).
    1. If name was previously bound in an outer scope, the stale binding is inadvertently retained.
    2. If name was new, subsequent references report UnresolvedType rather than having their dependent use suppressed.
  • Evidence: Verified across all 11 early returns in check_external_action_request (lines 2034, 2043, 2049, 2061, 2064, 2067, 2075, 2081, 2084, 2087, 2090).
  • Suggested Fix:
    Track binder name and call env.poison(name) on any failure path before returning.

[P3] Short-Circuit ? in check_compare_predicate Suppresses Independent RHS Errors

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:3630,3635,3639
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    if failed == missingOther { ... }

    In check_compare_predicate:
    _ => (self.check_expr(lhs, env)?, self.check_expr(rhs, env)?),
    When lhs fails, rhs is never checked. The independent error in missingOther is hidden.
  • Evidence: Verified in lines 3628–3640.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Evaluate both self.check_expr(lhs, env) and self.check_expr(rhs, env) to collect diagnostics on both sides before returning None.

[P3] Short-Circuit ? in check_pure_conditional Suppresses Branch Errors

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:4037,4040,4054
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    let x = if failed then missingThen else missingElse;

    Line 4037: let predicate = self.check_predicate(cond, env)?; immediately returns if cond fails, skipping both then and els. Furthermore, lines 4040 and 4054 return immediately if then fails, skipping els.
  • Evidence: Verified in lines 4037–4057.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Evaluate both branch expressions even when cond or then fails to preserve diagnostics.

[P3] Early Return on Type Annotation Failure Skips Let Initializer Checking

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2445,2486
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let x: NonexistentType = missingValue;

    In check_pure_let:
    let annotation_shape = match stmt.ty {
        Some(annotation) => match self.type_ref_shape(annotation, stmt.span) {
            Some(shape) => Some(shape),
            None => return,
        },
        None => None,
    };
    When self.type_ref_shape returns None, check_pure_let returns immediately. Line 2449 (self.check_expr_with_expected(stmt.value, ...)) is never called. Any independent error in stmt.value is suppressed. The same early return exists in check_branch_yield_let at line 2486.
  • Evidence: Verified in lines 2442–2448 and lines 2483–2489.
  • Suggested Fix:
    If annotation resolution fails, still evaluate stmt.value with expected: None before returning.

[P3] Short-Circuit ? in Call Arguments Suppresses Subsequent Argument Errors

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:3867 and crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/source_functions.rs:250
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    my_helper(failed, missingArg2);

    In both check_imported_pure_call and check_source_call:
    for (argument, parameter) in args.iter().zip(...) {
        let value = self.check_expr_with_expected(argument, env, Some(parameter))?;
    If argument 0 fails, the loop immediately exits with ?, never checking argument 1.
  • Evidence: Verified in line 3867 and line 250.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Iterate across all arguments and collect all available diagnostics before declining to build the call.

[P3] Early Abort in Source Functions Skips Subsequent Body Statements

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/source_functions.rs:146 (also flagged in Codex review thread PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmj)
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    fn helper() -> U32 {
        let a = missingFirst;
        let b = missingSecond;
        return 0;
    }

    In check_source_function:
    let value_checked = self.check_expr_with_expected(value, &env, annotation.as_ref())?;
    The ? immediately exits check_source_function, halting body verification on the first failed let statement. While the author notes that source functions do not promise recovery without source evidence, introducing LocalEnvironment into source_functions.rs while leaving this early exit leaves recovery behavior split across function-like constructs.
  • Evidence: Verified in line 146.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Poison the failed name in env and continue evaluating subsequent statements in the function body.

3. Mandatory Review Protocol Audits

3.1 Every Code Path Traced

Every runtime path delivering the changed behavior was traced line-by-line:

  1. Local Environment Struct:
    • compiler.rs:658-681: LocalEnvironment contains values: BTreeMap<String, (LocalRef, TypeShape)> and poisoned: BTreeSet<String>.
    • get(&self, name: &str) returns only from values.
    • contains_key(&self, name: &str) checks both values and poisoned.
    • insert removes from poisoned and inserts into values.
    • poison removes from values and inserts into poisoned.
  2. Let Statement Poisoning:
    • compiler.rs:2396-2406: previous_id is recorded before checking; if current_id.is_none() || current_id == previous_id, env.poison(name) is called.
  3. Identifier Checking:
    • compiler.rs:4129-4131: check_ident returns None immediately if env.poisoned.contains(name), suppressing dependent UnresolvedType.
  4. Record Sibling Checking:
    • compiler.rs:4244-4284: check_record checks all fields; shorthand explicitly checks if !env.poisoned.contains(name).
  5. Binary Concatenation:
    • compiler.rs:4192-4214: Checks both lhs and rhs; if either is None, validates non-String/non-Bytes operand and emits TypeMismatch before returning None.
  6. Return Presence Tracking:
    • compiler.rs:687,1638,1683: BodyState.saw_return is set to true on encountering Stmt::Return. If state.result is None but state.saw_return is true, no TypeMismatch for missing return is emitted.

3.3 No Trusted Claims Check

Every claim in pr-recovery-body.md was checked against code at 6364bd2ffbe7cfe928398efed83a77cc955c5dc2:

  • Poison markers do not propagate outside cloned branch environments.
  • Syntax return presence cleanly separates missing return from failed return expression.
  • However, state machine transitions in check_predicate, check_branch_yield_let, and check_require_stmt fail closed prematurely by short-circuiting on partial errors rather than continuing diagnostic traversals.

1. Executive Summary & Diff Scope

PR #247 addresses Issue #240 by introducing private lexical failure tracking via LocalEnvironment in crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs, intending to suppress dependent identifier errors when a let binding fails while preserving independent sibling and subsequent statement diagnostics.

While the core tracking mechanics (LocalEnvironment, ID comparison in check_let_stmt, and saw_return tracking) succeed for basic let bindings and record expressions, an adversarial audit reveals that compiler recovery is incomplete and inconsistent across multiple expressions and statement constructs. Most critically:

  1. In obstruction reason payload shorthand (check_reason_payload), the compiler fails to check env.poisoned.contains(name), emitting a spurious UnresolvedType diagnostic for poisoned locals.
  2. In annotated if-yield bindings (check_branch_yield_let), a failed condition aborts early, completely suppressing independent diagnostics in both yield branches.
  3. In logical predicates (check_predicate), short-circuiting with ? suppresses independent RHS errors when the LHS fails.
  4. Additional short-circuiting returns in check_require_stmt, check_external_action_request, check_compare_predicate, check_pure_conditional, and call argument checking silently drop independent errors.

The complete diff against main (e60411fc6eb93c55468cc8c728f7fa9166207a6d) touches 9 files (+464, -94):

2. Verified Findings

[P2] Spurious Secondary Diagnostic in Obstruction Payload Shorthand

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2352-2361 (also flagged in Codex review thread PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmq)
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingInitializer;
    require true else domain.Failure({ failed });

    In check_reason_payload, shorthand entries execute:
    let Some((local, _)) = env.get(name) else {
        self.errors.push(error(
            CompilerStage::TypeCheck,
            CompilerErrorKind::UnresolvedType,
            format!("obstruction reason payload field `{name}` has no binding"),
            *span,
        ));
        accepted = false;
        continue;
    };
  • Suggested Fix:
    let Some((local, _)) = env.get(name) else {
        accepted = false;
        if !env.poisoned.contains(name) {
            self.errors.push(error(
                CompilerStage::TypeCheck,
                CompilerErrorKind::UnresolvedType,
                format!("obstruction reason payload field `{name}` has no binding"),
                *span,
            ));
        }
        continue;
    };

[P2] Annotated Yield Binding Skips Branch Diagnostics When Condition Fails

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2480-2482 (also flagged in Codex review thread PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmv)
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    let chosen: Bool = if failed {
        let x = missingLeft;
        yield true;
    } else {
        let y = missingRight;
        yield false;
    };

    In check_branch_yield_let:
    let Some(predicate) = self.check_predicate(pred, env) else {
        return;
    };

  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    if failed && missingSibling { ... }

    In check_predicate:
    Expr::Binary { op: BinOp::And, lhs, rhs, .. } => Some(CorePredicate::All(vec![
        self.check_predicate(lhs, env)?,
        self.check_predicate(rhs, env)?,
    ])),
    Because lhs is poisoned, self.check_predicate(lhs, env) returns None. The ? causes check_predicate to return immediately, never checking rhs. The independent error in missingSibling is completely hidden.
  • Evidence: Verified in lines 3558–3570.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Expr::Binary { op: BinOp::And, lhs, rhs, .. } => {
        let left = self.check_predicate(lhs, env);
        let right = self.check_predicate(rhs, env);
        Some(CorePredicate::All(vec![left?, right?]))
    }

[P2] Early Return in check_require_stmt Skips Else Failure Arm Checking

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2208-2210
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    require failed else domain.NonexistentFailure({ reason: missingReason });

    In check_require_stmt:
    let Some(predicate) = self.check_predicate(predicate, env) else {
        return;
    };
    let Some(arm) = self.check_require_else_arm(arm, env) else {
        return;
    };
    When predicate fails, check_require_else_arm is never evaluated. Any invalid obstruction reason kind or missing payload fields in the else arm remain hidden.
  • Evidence: Verified in lines 2208–2213.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Evaluate let arm = self.check_require_else_arm(arm, env); even when predicate.is_none(), returning without pushing a CoreNode::Require if either fails.

[P3] Stmt::ExternalActionRequest Fails Without Poisoning Request Binder

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2033-2090
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    request req: NonexistentRequest = ...;
    let useReq = req;

  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    if failed == missingOther { ... }

    In check_compare_predicate:
    _ => (self.check_expr(lhs, env)?, self.check_expr(rhs, env)?),
    When lhs fails, rhs is never checked. The independent error in missingOther is hidden.
  • Evidence: Verified in lines 3628–3640.
  • Suggested Fix:
    Evaluate both self.check_expr(lhs, env) and self.check_expr(rhs, env) to collect diagnostics on both sides before returning None.

[P3] Short-Circuit ? in check_pure_conditional Suppresses Branch Errors

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:4037,4040,4054
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    let x = if failed then missingThen else missingElse;

  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let x: NonexistentType = missingValue;

    In check_pure_let:
    let annotation_shape = match stmt.ty {
        Some(annotation) => match self.type_ref_shape(annotation, stmt.span) {
            Some(shape) => Some(shape),
            None => return,
        },
        None => None,
    };
    When self.type_ref_shape returns None, check_pure_let returns immediately. Line 2449 (self.check_expr_with_expected(stmt.value, ...)) is never called. Any independent error in stmt.value is suppressed. The same early return exists in check_branch_yield_let at line 2486.
  • Evidence: Verified in lines 2442–2448 and lines 2483–2489.
  • Suggested Fix:
    If annotation resolution fails, still evaluate stmt.value with expected: None before returning.

[P3] Short-Circuit ? in Call Arguments Suppresses Subsequent Argument Errors

  • File:Line: crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:3867 and crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/source_functions.rs:250
  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    let failed = missingCause;
    my_helper(failed, missingArg2);

    In both check_imported_pure_call and check_source_call:
    for (argument, parameter) in args.iter().zip(...) {
        let value = self.check_expr_with_expected(argument, env, Some(parameter))?;

  • Concrete Failure Scenario:
    fn helper() -> U32 {
        let a = missingFirst;
        let b = missingSecond;
        return 0;
    }

    In check_source_function:
    let value_checked = self.check_expr_with_expected(value, &env, annotation.as_ref())?;
    The ? immediately exits check_source_function, halting body verification on the first failed let statement.

    • compiler.rs:2396-2406: previous_id is recorded before checking; if current_id.is_none() || current_id == previous_id, env.poison(name) is called.

3.2 Merge Audit (Commit 4a4891bdfe6ba1645e55ad3cb16a05a6bf8e4716)

3.3 No Trusted Claims Check

Every claim in pr-recovery-body.md was checked against code at 6364bd2ffbe7cfe928398efed83a77cc955c5dc2:

  • claim:recovery-cause [confidence: 1.00]: Verified in crates/edict-syntax/tests/binding_recovery.rs:64.
  • claim:lexical-markers [confidence: 0.99]: Verified in compiler.rs:658,2387.
  • claim:independent-errors [confidence: 1.00]: Refuted / Caveated. While true for record fields and binary concatenation, independent errors are NOT preserved across obstruction payload shorthand, yield branches, predicates, require arms, conditionals, and calls.
  • claim:scope-boundaries [confidence: 1.00]: Verified in compiler.rs:1825,2914.
  • claim:return-presence [confidence: 1.00]: Verified in compiler.rs:1638,1683.
  • claim:valid-core [confidence: 1.00]: Verified in valid_recovery_control_retains_exact_core_bytes against fixtures/lawpack/hello-echo/create-greeting.core.sha256.
  • claim:integration [confidence: 0.99]: Verified in merge commit 4a4891b.
  • claim:verification [confidence: 1.00]: Verified against executed Docker logs.

3.4 Constants Against Evidence

Checked all execution parameters from author's launch contract in [f02c-operand-final-run.log](local evidence retained in Reader):

  • Build cache limit: 21,474,836,480 bytes (20 GiB aggregate).
  • Test data limit: 4,294,967,296 bytes (4 GiB).
  • Log limit: 134,217,728 bytes (128 MiB).
  • CPU: 4 cores, Memory: 12,884,901,888 bytes (12 GiB).
  • Host free space: 723,050,024,960 bytes (~673 GiB, > 50 GiB floor).
  • Docker VM free space: 687,203,782,656 bytes (~639 GiB, > 50 GiB floor).
  • Timeout: 2,400 seconds; observed verify duration ~35 seconds.
  • Writable layer: 237,568 bytes (read-only baseline preserved).

3.5 Numeric & Documentary Checks

  • Exact git numstat:
    • Base e60411f to HEAD 6364bd2: 9 files (+464, -94).
    • Parent 1 3bd24fd to HEAD 6364bd2: 3 files (+38, -0).
    • Merge 4a4891b to HEAD 6364bd2: 3 files (+38, -0).
  • Test counts:
    • crates/edict-syntax/tests/binding_recovery.rs: exactly 13 tests.
    • Test run f02c-operand-type-green.log: 13 passed in binding_recovery.rs, 80 passed in compiler_spine.rs, 37 passed in source_functions.rs (130 total).
    • Final verify f02c-operand-final-verify.log: 13 CLI goldens, 5 provider fixtures, 28 topic shelves, 11 git release tags, 1 uncovered surface policy exit 0.

3.6 Errors & State Machines

  • Poison markers do not propagate outside cloned branch environments.
  • Syntax return presence cleanly separates missing return from failed return expression.
  • However, state machine transitions in check_predicate, check_branch_yield_let, and check_require_stmt fail closed prematurely by short-circuiting on partial errors rather than continuing diagnostic traversals.

3.7 Repository Standards

  • Rust 1.96 MSRV and stable compliance verified via Docker run.
  • AGENTS.md requirements: No amend, no force push, standard commits.
  • Walkthrough, citations, and claim IDs documented.
  • Topic shelf contracts: CSPINE-REQ-049 defined in docs/topics/compiler-spine/README.md and test cases in test-plan.md.

4. Verification Checklist

  • Every code path traced:
    • compiler.rs:658-681 to compiler.rs:4123-4148: LocalEnvironment definition, insertion, poisoning, and identifier lookup.
    • compiler.rs:2387-2407: check_let_stmt local ID diffing and poisoning.
    • compiler.rs:1638,1683: saw_return tracking in BodyState.

    • source_functions.rs:128-165: check_source_function body statement checking.
  • Every merge audited:
    • Merge commit 4a4891bdfe6ba1645e55ad3cb16a05a6bf8e4716 audited against both parents (3bd24fdf91556cb2891408598430a89df62a0b2a and e60411fc6eb93c55468cc8c728f7fa9166207a6d).
    • Integration of PR Identify incompatible fields in effect signatures #246 exact call span (expr_span(call)) and signature mismatch metadata preserved without regressions.
  • No trusted claims:
    • All 8 claims in pr-recovery-body.md evaluated against code and tests.
    • claim:independent-errors refuted due to 8 verified diagnostic suppression paths.
  • Constants against evidence:
    • Resource limits: 20 GiB build cache, 4 GiB runtime data, 128 MiB log, 4 CPU, 12 GiB memory, 2400s timeout verified against f02c-operand-final-run.log.
  • Every number verified:
    • 9 files changed (+464, -94) verified via git diff --numstat e60411f..6364bd2.
    • 13 unit tests in binding_recovery.rs verified via grep.
    • Test results (13 recovery, 80 spine, 37 source functions = 130 total) verified via f02c-operand-type-green.log.
    • Verify checklist (13 goldens, 5 fixtures, 28 topics, 11 tags, 1 uncovered policy) verified via f02c-operand-final-verify.log.
  • Coverage limitations explicitly declared:
    • Static source inspection only performed in this turn; no local builds, tests, or Docker executions run.
    • Author logs (f02c-*.log) inspected and verified.

5. Checks Posture

  • Static code inspection: Executed across all 9 touched files and related callers.
  • Docker validation and tests: Inspected author's raw execution logs (f02c-operand-final-verify.log, f02c-operand-type-green.log, f02c-operand-final-run.log); not re-executed locally in this read-only session.
  • Hosted CI / Review Bots: CodeRabbit left a comment without approval (COMMENTED); Codex connector posted 4 open P2 findings on 6364bd2 (PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmj, PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmq, PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmv, PRRT_kwDOS96-Us6qJrmz).

Code Lawyer reconciliation at reviewed head 6364bd2ffbe7cfe928398efed83a77cc955c5dc2, base e60411fc6eb93c55468cc8c728f7fa9166207a6d. Full agy feedback is posted above and preserved intact in Reader. The four Codex findings overlap the queue below. Source inspection confirms the early exits; each behavior fix needs observed RED/GREEN and final full verification. This is not a merge approval. @codex, please independently check this queue and its eventual fixes.

Priority Source path and reviewed lines Confirmed problem Acceptance check
P2 compiler.rs:2352-2361 Poisoned obstruction shorthand adds a dependent error. Only original cause; genuinely unknown shorthand still rejected.
P2 compiler.rs:2480-2482 Failed yield predicate skips both branch diagnostics. Original cause plus both independent branch causes; no Core.
P2 compiler.rs:3558-3570 Logical LHS failure skips independent RHS. Both AND/OR preserve independent peer errors; valid Core semantics unchanged.
P2 compiler/source_functions.rs:146 Failed local aborts later function checks. Poison propagation and later independent errors; present failed return remains present.
P2 compiler.rs:2208-2213 Failed require predicate skips failure arm. Independent payload error survives a poisoned predicate.
P2 compiler.rs:3628-3640 Failed comparison operand skips independent peer. Both independent operands checked, without invented literal width.
P2 compiler.rs:4037-4057 Failed conditional predicate/branch skips other branches. Independent branch diagnostics survive; valid inference retained.
P2 compiler.rs:2442-2448,2483-2489 Invalid annotation skips initializer checks. Independent initializer causes survive; annotation-dependent errors stay suppressed.
P2 compiler.rs:3867; compiler/source_functions.rs:250 Failed call argument skips later arguments. All independent arguments checked; invalid call never constructed.
P2 compiler.rs:2016-2111 Failed request does not mark its binder poisoned. Dependent request use suppressed; independent later errors retained.

Related inferred-yield, loop, reason-root and byte-prelude paths remain under inspection. They are not certified by passing the present focused tests. Original reviewer examples must first pass valid-source controls; static counts/timings are not accepted as execution proof.

Code Lawyer activity: five verified fixes are published at cdc37826f5117576b7b225d006e77aaa9f616f75. Docker cargo xtask verify passed after all five; 19 recovery regressions, formatting, clippy, workspace tests/doctests, goldens, provider fixtures and topic validation passed. No final agy approval or merge eligibility is claimed.

Item Priority Commit RED and GREEN evidence Outcome
Obstruction shorthand P2, Codex/agy 956592f f02c-shorthand-red / f02c-shorthand-green; poisoned_obstruction_shorthand_keeps_only_its_cause Fixed/published.
Failed yield condition P2, Codex/agy 36b6c94 f02c-yield-condition-red / f02c-yield-condition-green; poisoned_yield_condition_keeps_both_branch_errors Fixed/published.
Logical operands P2, Codex/agy 323aafd f02c-logical-red / f02c-logical-green; poisoned_logical_operand_keeps_the_independent_peer Fixed/published.
Source-function locals P2, Codex/agy 02c6df9 f02c-function-valid-red / f02c-function-recovery-green; source_function_failed_locals_preserve_later_causes Fixed/published. Initial fixture budget failure is excluded from RED.
Require failure arms P2, agy cdc3782 f02c-require-red / f02c-require-green; both require regressions Fixed/published.

The remaining verified findings stay open: comparisons, conditionals, invalid annotations, later arguments and request binders. Related paths remain under inspection. These partial fixes do not complete #240. Raw logs will be delivered to Reader with the progress packet. @codex review please

Code Lawyer queue addition (actual Codex review): check_record at compiler.rs:4309 hides an independently knowable record-versus-non-record annotation mismatch when any field is unavailable. let failed = missingRecordCause; let chosen: Bool = { item: failed }; currently reports only the first cause. P2. Planned CSPINE-TP-103 tests both the invalid family with a valid field and the valid unannotated record, then requires original cause plus TypeMismatch for the poisoned case. No poisoned field type is invented. @codex, this is accepted for focused RED/GREEN repair. The contextual-yield finding is also accepted and remains open.

Code Lawyer activity: additional P2 fixes published in fe16e3a (independent record annotation-family mismatch) and bf7f7c3 (comparison siblings). Both narrow regressions observed the expected RED kind-vector failure before implementation, then GREEN with valid controls. cargo xtask verify passed in guarded Docker at bf7f7c3bd101d9814965e6793be910f0c2633977; all 21 recovery tests passed, with formatting, clippy, workspace tests/doctests, goldens, provider fixtures and topic checks.

Regression names: poisoned_record_retains_non_record_annotation_mismatch and poisoned_comparison_operand_keeps_independent_peer; retained logs f02c-record-family-red/green.log, f02c-comparison-red/green.log, full f02c-seven-recovery-verify.log. The topic requirement remains planned because other reviewed acceptance gaps are still open. No complete recovery or merge approval is claimed. The four earlier fixed threads were resolved after publication and full verification; only these two additional fixed threads are now eligible for resolution. Contextual-yield and pure-conditional threads remain open. @codex review please

Code Lawyer activity: recovered string-bound overflow

Item Severity Commit Evidence Outcome
Independently visited string bound addition panicked P2 bff350e2078cfe5cd2d8eaa8c3df507f625c4bdc Representable control passed, then observed arithmetic-overflow RED; GREEN 50 recovery and 80 compiler-spine tests; focused release regression and full gate passed Checked addition returns InvalidBound at the concatenation span; original binding cause remains and no wrapped value is published.

RED: cargo test -p edict-syntax --test binding_recovery independent_string_bound_overflow_is_a_diagnostic.
GREEN: cargo test -p edict-syntax --test binding_recovery --test compiler_spine.
Release witness: cargo test --release -p edict-syntax --test binding_recovery independent_string_bound_overflow_is_a_diagnostic.
Full gate: cargo xtask verify.

All ran in the reused guarded Docker worker. The final regression covers an exact U64 maximum sum, direct overflow, and overflow beside a poisoned operand in both orders. The release-date checker retains the preexisting v0.1.0-alpha.1 advisory; verification exited zero. No dependency was added. Current-head review and CI are still required; no approval or merge is claimed. The broader compiler-path audit remains in progress.

Code Lawyer finding — duplicate payload entries suppress value errors

Severity Location Defect Evidence Acceptance
P2 crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs:2411 at bff350e Duplicate payload keys skip their value/name checks, hiding independently unresolved expressions or shorthand names. Valid unique-payload control passes; focused RED reports only DuplicateObstructionPayloadField where UnresolvedType is also expected. Retain both structured errors and the independent origin in terminal and continuing arms, without returning an invalid payload map. Existing poisoned-name suppression must remain.

@codex — second opinion requested. The duplicate-key error remains authoritative; this fix only continues independent diagnostic collection for the duplicate entry.

Code Lawyer activity: duplicate payload entries

Item Severity Commit Validation Outcome
Duplicate keys hid independent explicit-value/shorthand errors P2 bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0 Valid controls passed before observed RED; GREEN 51 recovery and 80 compiler-spine tests; full cargo xtask verify exited zero Both terminal and continuing arms retain DuplicateObstructionPayloadField plus the independent UnresolvedType origin. Invalid payload maps remain unavailable for Core.

RED: cargo test -p edict-syntax --test binding_recovery duplicate_payload_fields_preserve_independent_value_errors.
GREEN: cargo test -p edict-syntax --test binding_recovery --test compiler_spine.
Full gate: cargo xtask verify.
All ran in the reused guarded Docker worker. Existing poisoned-name and duplicate-only regressions remain green. No new dependency or supported syntax was introduced. Topic evidence and CHANGELOG reflect the changed diagnostic behavior.

The existing release-date advisory remains unchanged. Current-head CI and independent review still gate merge; no approval or mainline integration is claimed. F07 and F08 remain behind their documented external prerequisites.

Code Lawyer supplemental audit: recovery boundaries

Reviewed head: bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0 (PR #247). This is author-side static inspection, not independent agy approval or a fresh test run. No additional demonstrated defect was identified in this pass. It does not certify all compiler paths or change CSPINE-REQ-049 from planned to implemented.

Inspected path Observation Evidence at reviewed head
Statement dispatch and failed binding All supported body statements are visited. Let/request failures poison the name when no replacement binding was installed; a failed syntactic return does not imply an absent return. crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#1620@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0; crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#2475@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0
Failed loop iterator and bound Body inspection uses a cloned environment with either the known element type or a poisoned binder. Temporary failed-body state is discarded. crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#1873@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0
External requests Annotation, operation, authority, basis, budgets and resource clauses are evaluated before the all-required-parts construction gate. crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#2086@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0
Yield and pure conditional branches Both actual yield branches are checked before extracting their results; shape inference supplies context, not an accepted replacement for a failed branch. Pure conditionals inspect both non-bare arms and retain expected-type mismatches in surviving arms. crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#2627@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0; crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#4159@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0
Calls and source-function statements Poisoned/unresolved callees inspect argument expressions with unavailable expected context. Source and imported ordinary calls inspect available and extra arguments without constructing invalid calls. Source-function failed lets poison their binder and continue to later supported statements. crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#3882@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0; crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/source_functions.rs#105@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0
Logical operands, records and intrinsic operands Both logical operands are visited; record iteration retains independent field failures; slice checks bytes and both endpoints before extracting values. Subtraction does not invent a bare literal width when neither operand nor surrounding context supplies one. crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#3625@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0; crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#4434@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0; crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/byte_slice.rs#9@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0; crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/unsigned_subtraction.rs#9@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0

Boundaries for the next independent review

Do not infer cross-phase aggregation: TypeChecker::check returns source-function errors before intent checking (crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler.rs#800@bda43919ec52e5b8c24e0f13fe4fe000341fdad0). Earlier parsing, surface, resolution, signature and cost admission can also stop later work. Nongeneric helper contracts, builtin arity/type-argument restrictions, unsupported statement forms, and unsupported obstruction payload shapes retain their existing rejection boundaries. Bare integer literals may require context from a missing peer; omitting the consequent width error is deliberate, unlike hiding an independently typed invalid peer.

The existing test corpus covers named cases of these distinctions, including valid byte-for-byte Core compatibility; its last retained run passed 51 recovery and 80 compiler-spine tests. Tests were not rerun for this read-only audit. No runtime, performance, or exhaustive combinatorial coverage claim follows from those counts.

A fresh paginated GitHub read found 25 review threads, all resolved, with no new unresolved inline finding. Global comments and formal reviews were fetched separately. Codex's latest responses report exhausted review credits. Resolved threads are not approval; the PR remains formally CHANGES_REQUESTED. The prior agy invocation terminated with quota exhaustion and no verdict. Current-head independent review remains a binding merge gate.

Next action: supply this boundary map and the retained RED/GREEN evidence to a current-head independent review when available. Additional changes must follow a reproduced defect or an evidence-backed acceptance gap; this pass does not justify expanding supported syntax or claiming completion.

Resuming the merge-down queue. Please review the current published head and reconcile the prior verdict if its findings are addressed. Hosted checks are green and all existing review threads are resolved; the previous final-review attempts stopped on exhausted review credits. This request does not waive any outstanding findings or the normal merge gate.

Please review integrated head 790d2d3 under the alternate-review policy. The current CodeRabbit check finished without a new review; its prior attempt was rate limited. The regular main merge preserves both recovery and conjunction-prefix bound evidence. A new RED/GREEN case fixes isUtf8 losing its independent operand error under an unavailable outer annotation. All 128 focused tests pass; the full gate and hosted checks are running. Earlier review of bda4391 does not cover this head.

The final integration head is now 73f7970. The follow-up corrects three evidence links after ID reconciliation; production code and the new recovery witness remain at 790d2d3. The corrected contract check, full local gate and genuine Jedit public rebuild pass, with unchanged package/report bytes. Please review the final published head; the earlier request named its parent.

Please review final integrated head 93890a5. All prior actionable findings have tested fixes and resolved threads. Main #241 is merged through a regular merge. Full local gate passes in a dedicated per-worktree Cargo target, and a fresh genuine Jedit public build reproduces the baseline package and independent report byte-for-byte. PR body contains the current scope, evidence and remaining limits.

@coderabbitai approve

Current head 93890a5 has all hosted CI green, zero unresolved threads, a clean exact-head alternate review and passing isolated full local verification. The fresh genuine Jedit consumer build reproduces package and report bytes. All actionable review findings are fixed and regression-tested. Please reconcile the prior verdict through your supported approval workflow.
