Review comments at @crates/edict-syntax/src/compiler/unsigned_addition.rs:
- Around line 55-154: Add regression tests for mixed-width U32 + U64 sums,
signed I32 sums, and negated-bound evidence, asserting stable error kinds:
TypeMismatch, the intended unsigned-addition rejection kind, and
UnsupportedSourceShape respectively. Update the addition dispatch or diagnostic
path around check_unsigned_addition so signed integer addition does not fall
through to check_concat and report a concatenation error; preserve the
documented rejection behavior.
- Around line 38-47: Update check_addition_or_concat to avoid recursively
probing operand shapes with diagnostic_expr_shape before selecting addition or
concatenation; check the left operand once with a family-neutral expectation and
reuse its typed result, or cache diagnostic shapes on the original checker so
nested probes are reused. Add a regression case with at least 32 alternating
additions and subtractions using valid unsigned operands, and verify checking
completes within normal suite time.
Review comments at @crates/edict-syntax/src/target_ir.rs:
- Around line 1207-1209: Replace the unsigned-operation callee disjunctions in
both matching locations with the existing is_unsigned_arithmetic helper, so all
checks recognize unsigned operations consistently. Move or re-export
unsigned_subtraction::type_coordinate through a shared unsigned_arithmetic
module and update addition validation to use that shared validator.
Review comments at @crates/edict-syntax/src/target_ir/unsigned_addition.rs:
- Around line 78-108: Add a brief comment beside the depth check in `bound`
documenting the intentional asymmetry: Target returns `None` at the cutoff,
while source `upper_bound` returns `max`, so some source-accepted sums may be
refused by Target.

## Pull Request Writing
Every pull request body MUST contain a `## Plain-English Walkthrough` section.
Its depth should match the change: a narrow mechanical PR may need only a few
paragraphs, while a behavioral or architectural PR needs enough detail for a
reviewer to reconstruct the important flow, invariants, and risks without
reverse-engineering the diff.

Documentation must move with behavior. A contract-bearing change must do one of
the following before it is claimed complete:
1. update affected documentation;
2. show that existing documentation remains accurate;
3. declare `docs-impact: none` with a concise rationale.

## RED/GREEN Testing Discipline
For behavior, contract, workflow, release, schema, validation, or public-surface
changes:
1. Update the owning topic `test-plan.md` with planned requirement and case rows
before or alongside the first test.
2. Write the deterministic test, fixture, doctest, or contract check before the
implementation that makes it pass.
3. Run the narrowest relevant command and observe the RED failure.
4. Implement the smallest coherent change that turns that test GREEN.
5. Mark planned rows as implemented only after executable evidence exists.
6. Report the RED command and GREEN command in the final report or pull request
body.

@codex review please Review fixes are pushed at 1b2b7ee. Right-peer width inference, signed/mixed-width/negated-evidence regressions and observational subtraction probing pass. The alternating 32-layer compiler witness exceeded 40 seconds before the fix; all 12 focused addition tests now complete in 0.01 seconds. Full cargo +1.96.0 xtask verify passed with 1,220 tests and two ignored. Shared unsigned signature dispatch and the Target depth-cutoff comment are also updated. |

@codex review please The enclosing literal-peer inference regression is fixed in 561981d. The new test first rejected ((1 + 2) + input.left) + 3, then passed for both operand orders and widths after observational shape inference learned literal-only arithmetic peers. All 13 addition tests and the repeated full cargo +1.96.0 xtask verify passed, with 1,221 tests and two ignored. The addressed thread is resolved; fresh review and hosted checks remain the merge gates. |

Superseded review of 3df3a64: every actionable thread has been addressed and resolved in follow-up commits. Final head 561981d passes all hosted checks and full local verification. CodeRabbit reports its included review limit reached; under the repository alternate-review policy, the requested Codex review of exact final head completed with no major issues. Plain-English Walkthrough
TL;DR
Edict now compiles same-width
U32andU64addition when it can prove that the result fits. Unproved sums reject instead of wrapping. Previously numeric+reached the concatenation checker and failed as a type error. [claim:source-sum, confidence:1.00]Walkthrough
The source checker preserves both operands and their width in
core.integer.add<T>(left, right). It combines literal and nested-sum bounds with literal upper bounds from dominating conjunctive input comparisons, then checksupper(left) + upper(right) <= MAX(T). Either comparison direction and equality can supply a bound. Disjunction and negation supply none. Exact-width maxima and zero identity are supported. [claim:source-sum, confidence:1.00]The target boundary repeats the type and totality judgment over raw Core without using the source checker's proof routine. Removing the input proof, weakening it to a disjunction, forging a signed width or argument count, or inserting overflowing constants produces
InvalidCoreIdentitywithout a Target artifact. [claim:target-sum, confidence:1.00]Nested sums can infer their width from an operand, so an explicit
letannotation is optional. The right operand can supply a literal-only left sums width, including through an enclosing sum. Subtraction shape probing is observational, so 32 alternating addition/subtraction layers compile within normal test time. The observational shape probe supplies a type only; the authoritative checker still has to establish the overflow bound. [claim:inference, confidence:1.00]Existing byte/string concatenation retains its behavior. The old byte-concatenation test case expecting all
U64 + U64expressions to be a type error was removed from that wrong-family list; the addition suite now requires an explicit no-overflow-proof refusal for an unproved unsigned sum. [claim:compatibility, confidence:1.00]This PR stops at source/Core and Target IR. Provider/runtime integration and a genuine public compiled-package execution witness remain next steps before the overall addition capability is complete. The existing Core call node carries the new callee. [claim:representation, confidence:0.99]
Verification
The initial command was:
cargo +1.96.0 test --locked -p edict-syntax --test unsigned_addition proven_unsigned_addition_preserves_operands_and_lowers_independentlyIt first failed at source checking with
concatenation requires two bounded strings or two bounded bytes. After source support, the same witness failed at the independent target boundary withUnsupportedinstead ofLowered. The separate inferred-nested-sum witness also failed before its type-probe fix. Review then exposed(input.left + 1) + 2without an annotation; that regression failed before propagating the known unsigned width to its bare literal peer and now passes in both operand orders and both widths. [claim:red-green, confidence:1.00]Review regressions reproduced rejection of
(1 + 2) + input.left, misleading signed concatenation diagnostics, and an alternating-expression run exceeding a 40-second limit. The fixes pass the new regressions. A further enclosing-sum review regression failed before generalizing observational width inference to literal-only arithmetic subtrees; it now passes in both widths and operand orders. Signed sums reject asUnsupportedSourceShape, mixed widths asTypeMismatch, and negated bounds asUnsupportedSourceShape. [claim:red-green, confidence:1.00]Final validation used the isolated addition target directory:
cargo +1.96.0 xtask verify: passed, including 1,221 tests passed and two ignored, strict linting, CLI goldens, component fixtures, provider contracts/runtime dependency checks and 28 topic shelves.cargo +1.96.0 test --locked -p edict-syntax --test unsigned_addition: 13 tests passed on the final source.git diff --check origin/main...HEAD: passed after committing. These commands establish the compiler/Target scope above. They do not establish execution of the new call through Echo. [claim:red-green, confidence:1.00]
Documentation and compatibility
The integer-safety specification and the compiler-spine/Target topic contracts and test plans describe the new bound judgment and its limits. Existing call encoding is reused. [claim:representation, confidence:0.99] Downstream interpreters must earn support for the new callee explicitly. No release or provider-component promotion is included.
