ci: ShellCheck tracked scripts and generated hook launchers - #373
Conversation
scripts/ci/shellcheck.sh checks every tracked shell script (by .sh extension or sh/bash shebang) with shellcheck -x, then installs the hook launchers into a throwaway repository and checks those too, since they exist only inside an installed hooks directory. The quality job runs it. Verified locally: clean on the current tree; exits 1 when a violating script is added. ReplaceRange proof locks refreshed for the new ci.yml bytes (toolchain-lock file hash; build-lock toolchain hash, closure entry, and closure digest).

@codex review please, focus on scripts/ci/shellcheck.sh: script discovery (extension and shebang), the throwaway-repo launcher install, failure propagation under set -euo pipefail, and the proof-lock refresh for the ci.yml change. |

Brings in #372 (drops the direct MCP SDK declaration). The ReplaceRange proof locks are recomputed for the combined tree: the toolchain lock now pins the post-#372 package.json and package-lock.json bytes and this branch's ci.yml bytes, and the build lock's toolchain-lock hash, ci.yml closure entry, and closure digest are recomputed with the algorithm in tests/assert-build-output.mjs (every closure entry verified against the tree). CHANGELOG keeps every entry.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue. The hardcoded launcher count can drift from the actual loop in the installer.
The message hardcodes "2 generated launchers". The installer loops over
pre-commit pre-push. If a hook is added, this output stays wrong and the new launcher is unchecked. Derive the list once and reuse it for generation checks, theshellcheckcall, and the message.

…line The discovery predicate matched bash or sh anywhere on the first line, so '#!/usr/bin/env python # sh' or '#!/opt/bash-tools/python' would have reached ShellCheck. shebang_interpreter now extracts the interpreter token, looking through env and its options (-S, NAME=value), and only bash or sh qualify. Checked against eleven shebang forms (python/node with a trailing 'sh' comment, a bash-named directory, /bin/sh, env bash, env -S bash -e, env FOO=1 sh, dash, '#! /bin/bash', no shebang, bare env); the tree still yields the same 10 scripts and 2 launchers. Reported by CodeRabbit on #373.

Codex found that '#!/usr/bin/env -S -u FOO bash' and '#!/usr/bin/env -S -C /tmp bash' resolved to FOO and tmp, and '--split-string=bash' to nothing, so such scripts would have been skipped. env_command now consumes option operands (-u, -C, -P, attached or separate, and their long forms), unpacks a split string (-S, -Sxxx, --split-string=), skips NAME=value, and honours --. The functions move to scripts/ci/lib/shebang.sh, sourced by shellcheck.sh, so spec/ci-shellcheck-shebang.spec.mjs can pin 22 shebang forms through bash without ShellCheck installed. The spec fails against the previous implementation (env -u FOO sh -> FOO) and passes now.

…ents after --
Codex found two more gaps: '-S -u "FOO BAR" bash' split the quoted operand (giving 'BAR"'), '-S "bash" -e' kept the quotes, and '-S -- FOO=1 bash' returned 'FOO=1' because -- ends only the options, not the NAME=value assignments. split_words now splits like env -S (single quotes literal; double quotes and bare text honour backslash escapes), used for the shebang line and for attached split strings; after -- the parser keeps skipping assignments, and a bare - is treated as -i. The spec gains six cases and fails against the previous library ('BAR"').

…lating env Three review rounds each found another GNU env parsing case (option operands, quoted and escaped split strings, clustered options) that made an extensionless shell script silently skip ShellCheck. Emulating env is the source of those silent skips, so the check now fails closed: shebang_interpreter classifies plain shebangs (#!/path/interp, #!/usr/bin/env [NAME=value]... interp) and returns status 2 for any env shebang that uses options, quotes, or escapes; the driver refuses such tracked files with a message naming them and the fix (a plain shebang or a .sh extension). No tracked file uses such a form. split_words and env_command are removed. The spec pins 19 shebang forms and adds a driver test in a fixture repository; both fail against the previous scripts and pass now.

@coderabbitai review Your CHANGES_REQUESTED review 5581155466 (on 902eb26) had one finding, the shebang interpreter predicate in scripts/ci/shellcheck.sh. It was addressed in later commits and the thread is resolved: the check now classifies plain shebangs and refuses env shebangs it cannot classify (a4cf409). Codex reviewed a4cf409 with no findings and all 14 checks pass. Please review the current head so your decision reflects it. |
|
The shebang-classification finding against 902eb26 was addressed in subsequent commits, and CodeRabbit acknowledged the original fix. Final head a4cf409 classifies supported plain shebangs and fails CI on unsupported env forms. The finding's thread is resolved, Codex reviewed this exact head with no findings, and all 14 checks pass.
The quality job now runs scripts/ci/shellcheck.sh after the quality gate. ci.md describes what it checks (tracked .sh files, bash/sh shebangs directly or through a plain env, and the generated hook launchers), that env shebangs with options, quotes, or escapes fail the check, and where the classifier and its spec live. It also corrects the local-check line: npm run check runs build, tests, and the quality gate, while ShellCheck runs in CI.
Follow-up to #351, as requested.
scripts/ci/shellcheck.shrunsshellcheck -xover every tracked shell script (by.shextension orsh/bashshebang; currently the hook entrypoints and libraries,install-hooks.sh, both Edictbuild.shscripts, and itself). It then installs the hook launchers withscripts/install-hooks.shinto a throwaway repository and checks the generatedpre-commitandpre-push, which exist only inside an installed hooks directory.qualityjob runs it (ubuntu-latestships ShellCheck).qualityalready feeds the requiredcheckaggregate, so no aggregate wiring changes.ci.ymlis part of the ReplaceRange validation closure, so the proof locks are refreshed (the same mechanical refresh as Refresh ReplaceRange proof locks after the dependency update #355, Chore(deps): bump the npm_and_yarn group across 1 directory with 3 updates #354, and chore(deps): drop the unused direct MCP SDK declaration #372; recomputed with the algorithm intests/assert-build-output.mjs). Whichever of this PR and chore(deps): drop the unused direct MCP SDK declaration #372 merges second will recompute its locks on top of the other.Verified locally: clean on the current tree (10 scripts plus 2 launchers); exits 1 when a violating script is added. Once #371 lands,
docs/method/ci.mdgains this step.
