Rerun the rope compiler inventory against Amblicit 980c3ae3ff2ef96a0d026f9afdd77d61758cd57c with observed Echo checkout 9c32e0b5e633ca68383ef09b5da7a4bc2d6b8e9e, replacing stale blanket refusals with the measured compiler/provider boundary. The prerequisite compiler relock repair is merged in #384; this PR targets main.

The public runner republishes the application-owned lawpack against the selected provider and records structured diagnostics and source hashes. Each snapshot has 27 results: baseline, 21 construct probes, one source module and four whole drafts. The checked default publication accepts the baseline only. The explicit source-module candidate additionally accepts unsigned addition, byte count, UTF-8 and a module import carrying the correct digest. Particular byte/list-return probes reach the candidate and are refused; the generic diagnostic does not establish that all byte literals are unsupported. Other probes distinguish compiler-stage refusals. Whole drafts stop first at generic helper syntax or missing import digests; those errors do not classify every later construct.

The report uses echoCheckoutCommit for observed checkout metadata, separately from the selected provider manifest hash. The checkout field does not attest provider source. Original case records remain preserved; the source-module snapshot changes only this label. Both publication reproduction commands and evidence limits are documented. Accepted declarations are not helper-invocation or persistent-rope execution evidence; no checked-provider promotion, independent component reproduction, effects, WAL/recovery or editor cutover is claimed.

Validation: both original 27-case public-build captures match the committed case records. After the metadata fix, a guarded Docker rerun reproduces the default report byte-for-byte and passes the metadata contract; the same contract fails as expected on original output. Exact runner SHA, clean producer roots, compiler binary and provider manifests verified. All unique original case sources, streams, packages and verifier reports retained. Only verified duplicate provider copies were reclaimed. Independent Claude Sonnet Baker Street HOLMES/MORIARTY approve exact f14fe2c under Code Lawyer; exact-head CI remains the final merge gate.

Closes #370.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #370 requires a rerun against a named compiler commit, smallest failing sources for remaining refusals, and an updated table. The PR records Amblicit commit 980c3ae3ff2ef96a0d026f9afdd77d61758cd57c and Echo commit 9c32e0b5e633ca68383ef09b5da7a4bc2d6b8e9e. edict/replace-range/draft/README.md lists the first refusal for each whole draft and ties the measured boundaries to those revisions. The checked-in inventories retain source hashes, exit codes, and structured diagnostics. run.mjs executes the baseline, feature probes, source-module probe, and four draft probes through public application builds.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed runner, inventories, inventory README, and draft status table directly support Issue #370. The runner separates compiler failures from provider refusals and prevents unsupported conclusions from a failed baseline. The README keeps runtime execution and editor cutover explicitly open. No unrelated implementation change is established by the reviewed summary or focused files.

Code Lawyer finding queue: report provenance label

Severity Source Location Finding Acceptance
P2 CodeRabbit thread PRRT_kwDOSCKBn86yQCRl; independently verified, overlaps Sonnet MORIARTY S2 compiler-inventory/run.mjs report metadata and README --provider is independent of ECHO_REPO; the recorded Echo HEAD is checkout metadata and cannot attest provider source. The selected manifest hash binds bytes, not a source commit. Rename to echoCheckoutCommit in runner and normalized snapshots, state the distinction explicitly, preserve original capture bytes, validate actual command output and unchanged case results.

The relabel option is accepted. Adding a producer commit to Echo’s public provider identity would widen scope and change publication semantics without need. The historical runs did use the matching checkout/publications, now verified in the retained Docker worker; that does not make the generic runner enforce provenance.

The original-output metadata contract is RED because echoCheckoutCommit is absent. A real guarded public-runner rerun is validating GREEN. Before that run, only byte-identical per-case provider duplicates were reclaimed; original publications were archived and retained, and unique case sources, diagnostics, packages and verifier reports were preserved. No claim is made that the snapshot’s case results were re-measured just to rename their metadata.

@codex Second opinion welcome; final independent review remains Claude Sonnet as requested.

Claude Sonnet Baker Street independent review — initial head a764d75

All primary testimonies follow unchanged except machine-local path sanitization. HOLMES and MORIARTY approved this head with nonblocking findings; same WATSON’s repair menu informed the documentation corrections in 433511d. Their later approvals at 433511d are retained separately. These are prior-head reviews, not final-head merge eligibility.

Front-office corrections: the original producer clones, official reports, compiler binary and provider had not been deleted. They remained inside the retained Docker worker; absence from the host directory was insufficient evidence of loss. A guarded read-only inspection and bounded export recovered their original bytes, matching the recorded hashes. Some per-case provider copies were later reclaimed only after exact byte comparison and preservation of canonical publications; unique case sources, streams, packages and verifier reports remain.

The provider/source binding observation is addressed in f14fe2c by relabeling checkout metadata, not by claiming source provenance. The fresh default-publication command reproduces all 27 case records and exact committed report bytes. CodeRabbit’s corresponding thread is being reconciled after the published fix; final independent reviewers remain Claude Sonnet.

HOLMES testimony

HOLMES testimony: PR385 at a764d7587da146fb8534b26f41d4cd88376e6e29

Verdict: APPROVE for this exact head. There are no blocking findings. I found one small documentation drift and several precision gaps, all P4 or P5. Every claim I could check statically matched the evidence.

Evidence basis: worktree jedit-source, HEAD a764d75 (tree 6aaa44b5), base main d57c6a7. Citations are path#line@a764d75, numbered per file. I used plain Read and Bash because Graft was not needed. No application or test scripts were run.

READ means static reading, git, jq and shasum. RAN-BY-PARENT means the raw Docker evidence the parent supplied, which I only inspected.

1. Exact head, base, tree and merges

  • Base tree. d57c6a7 has parents 0409f96… and c94511b. Its tree cdfbc834… is identical to the tree of c94511b (git rev-parse on both). PR384's content is therefore exactly the prerequisite tip. READ
  • Diff size. git diff d57c6a7...HEAD and the two-dot d57c6a7 HEAD give the same result. That is five files, 2155 insertions and 51 deletions, matching the user's "five files, about 2200 lines". READ
  • Commits in d57c6a7..HEAD. There are three:
    • 21b6f02: the single non-merge commit, with parent 140d16c. It carries the inventory slice.
    • f500296: merge of 21b6f02 and febd603.
    • a764d75: merge of f500296 and c94511b.
    • git log --no-merges d57c6a7..HEAD lists only 21b6f02. READ
  • Merge f500296. Against its first parent it touches only edict/replace-range/README.md, edict.build-lock.json and tests/proof-harness.spec.mjs (13 insertions, 11 deletions). These are prerequisite files. READ
  • Merge a764d75. Against its first parent it touches docs/jim-component-ownership.md, replace-range/README.md, edict.build-lock.json and proof-harness.spec.mjs (39 insertions, 16 deletions). These are also prerequisite-owned. READ
  • Merge cleanliness. The second parent of a764d75 is c94511b, which is already in main. The diff against main therefore contains no merge-introduced content outside the five files. No history was rewritten. READ
  • Whitespace. git diff --check d57c6a7...HEAD is clean. READ

But count-bytes (run.mjs#64) contains the byte literal b"\n" and is accepted. The bytes-escapes probe (run.mjs#47) returns Bytes<exact=3> with \r\x00 escapes. The refusal cannot be attributed to byte literals as such. The provider message is the generic "Core source functions are outside the checked pure-function profile". Return type, exact=3 and the escapes are confounded. draft/README.md#66 repeats the row label "Bytes literals and escapes".
19 README.md#57-58: variants, recursion, Option, preconditions and typed failures refuse before provider invocation. CONFIRMED All are compiler-stage (typeCheck or parse) refusals followed by ApplicationCompilationFailed or InvalidApplicationSource.
20 README.md#59-60 and draft/README.md#40-45: module refusals are draft syntax debt. The diagnostic never names a function table. See §5 finding 4.
22 The candidate is not a promoted provider and is not independently reproduced. CONFIRMED README.md#44-47 says so explicitly. Neither document claims promotion or reproduction.
23 Helper acceptance is not runtime evidence. CONFIRMED README.md#62-65, draft/README.md#44-46. The runner has no execution step: run.mjs#90-91 only builds.
24 No persistent-rope, cutover, effects, admission, WAL or recovery completion is claimed. CONFIRMED README.md#3-5, draft/README.md#44-46 and #91-97. The Echo table is retitled "Jim evidence still required".
25 "Measured again on 2026-10-30". CONFIRMED inventory-command.log and .launch.json carry mtimes of 30 Oct 20:40–20:43. Mtimes are weak evidence.
26 The runner refuses dirty producers, builds the public compiler by Cargo metadata, and uses a fresh output. CONFIRMED run.mjs#22-26 runs git status --porcelain=v1 --untracked-files=all and throws if non-empty. buildCompiler is imported from the prerequisite (run.mjs#9, tests/compiler.mjs#24-51) and requires exactly one public compiler and one executable. mkdirSync(destination) at run.mjs#29 is non-recursive, so an existing output fails.
27 Baseline failure invalidates the inventory. CONFIRMED run.mjs#122-123 writes report.json and then throws if results[0].status !== 0. README.md#39-40 agrees.
28 Source-module digest is computed correctly. CONFIRMED by acceptance run.mjs#104-106 computes sha256 over CBOR ['edict.digest/v1','edict.source/v1',bytes]. source-module is accepted (status 0) and its source hash e22be403… differs from the baseline, so the replace took effect.
29 Imported helpers exist. CONFIRMED scripts/deps/echo-edict-relock.mjs exports withImportDigest (L80), lawpackManifestDigest (L89), adapterTargets (L115) and withAdapterTargets (L129). They are unchanged by this PR. READ
30 README.md#26: cargo +1.96.0. CONFIRMED edict.toolchain-lock.json line 4 has "toolchain": "1.96.0".
31 echo#921 merged and the earlier "draft" claim is stale (draft/README.md#93-95). UNVERIFIABLE It is an external GitHub fact. No Echo checkout is on the host.
32 Issue links amblicit/issues/2xx. UNVERIFIABLE They are external. The link text still says edict#NNN while the URL points at amblicit. That is cosmetic.
33 Standing claims about future work. PLANNED, honestly framed README.md#62-65 says the next step "must add execution evidence". draft/README.md#94-97 says "remaining proof obligations".

3. Reverse drift (reality the documents omit)

  1. Default-publication reproduction command. README.md#24-33 gives only the source-module command. The actual launch also ran the default provider at /jim-recovery/echo/schemas/edict-provider/package/v1 (inventory-command.launch.json, command). current-default.json is therefore not reproducible from the README alone. P4.
  2. Provider generation is outside the official run. The README tells the reader to generate the provider first. In the recorded run, /jim-recovery/source-modules-provider came from the earlier inventory-modules launch. inventory-command.launch.json shows no regeneration. The README says there is no reproducibility proof for the component, and that is honest. But providerManifestSha256 14bab3fa… has no regeneration check on record.
  3. Second diagnostic on recursive-type. The report also carries UnresolvedType: type ReplaceRangeInput is not declared. This looks like a cascade from the cycle. That reading is CONJECTURE, and an experiment would settle it. draft/README.md#61 cites only the first diagnostic, which is consistent with its "first error" framing.
  4. $JEDIT_ROOT at README.md#29 is never defined.
  5. Library hash. The source-module entry hashes only src/ReplaceRange.edict (run.mjs#96). Library.edict has no hash of its own in the report. It is pinned indirectly by the digest string inside the hashed source.

4. Static versus ran

  • Raw execution (by the parent): the builds and the 54 case runs recorded in inventory-command.log and .launch.json. I did not witness or re-run them.
  • What I did statically: diff, merge and tree analysis. I decoded the 54 log lines and compared them with the committed .results, and compared the header hashes with the toolchain lock and checked-in files. That comparison is a static computation, not a re-run.
  • Gaps in the raw evidence:
    • Producer outputs. The official output directories inventory-command-modules, inventory-command-default and source-modules-provider are not present at the host root. retained-inventory-cleanup.json lists three other directories (composed-rope-inventory, authenticated-draft-inventory, boundary-draft-inventory). That cleanup file does not name the official directories, so their fate is unrecorded. The header fields compilerBinarySha256, providerManifestSha256 for the module publication, and both producer commits cannot be checked against raw output on the host. They are internally consistent and, where a lock covers them, matched.
    • The log has no headers. inventory-command.log holds only the 54 per-case lines, no report.json header and no build output.
    • The retained exploratory set. inventory-results/ and inventory.log are earlier and exploratory. I did not use them as official evidence.
  • CI and review snapshot (jedit-pr385-*-current.json):
    • checks-current.json shows a single CodeRabbit check, IN_PROGRESS (pending).
    • runs-current.json is [], so no Actions runs were recorded. CI for this head is UNKNOWN, an external gate and not a code defect.
    • review-current.json is for head a764d75. It shows reviewDecision: null, 0 reviews and 0 review threads. Two PR comments exist.
    • The Codex summary comment says has_any_findings: false at a764d75.
    • jedit-pr385-current.json has headRefOid f500296 and base fix/compiler-relock. It is stale for this head, and jedit-pr385-retargeted.json shows base main, d57c6a7, head a764d75, MERGEABLE.
    • I did not enumerate GitHub myself, and the parent must exhaust the connections.
  • Scratch files. I created and deleted a few small temporary files under /tmp while diffing JSON. I made no repository, config or evidence-root writes.

5. Findings

# Sev Finding Cite
1 P4 The documents state "Byte literal helpers … are refused" more broadly than the probe supports. count-bytes accepts b"\n". The refused probe confounds Bytes<exact=3> return, the \r\x00 escapes and the helper shape. The generic provider message does not name the construct. Suggested fix: say "a helper returning a Bytes<exact=3> literal with \n\r\x00 escapes" and note that a b"\n" argument passes. README.md#55-56, draft/README.md#66, run.mjs#47, run.mjs#64
2 P4 The doc names ReferenceCycle as the refusal. The kind is UnsupportedSourceShape and ReferenceCycle is in the message. draft/README.md#62, current-source-modules.json recursive-function
3 P4 There is no command for reproducing current-default.json, and $JEDIT_ROOT is undefined. README.md#24-33
4 P5 The claim "schema rejects a Core function table" is a differential inference. The diagnostic says only ArtifactSchemaMismatch on core.artifact. There is no probe isolating the table. README.md#47-48, draft/README.md#43-44, current-default.json
5 P5 "Digest-authenticated" has no negative control. Nothing shows that a wrong digest is refused. That the compiler verifies the digest is CONJECTURE, and a wrong-digest probe would settle it. The drafts' expected keyword digest errors show only that the digest is syntactically required. README.md#53-54, draft/README.md#41-43
6 P5 Style. run.mjs uses throw new Error, 120000, 2 * 1024 * 1024, and schema strings inline. The redundant mkdirSync(destination, {recursive:true}) at run.mjs#100 follows the non-recursive one at #29. scripts/quality-gate.mjs#6-12 scans only src, spec and tests, so the probes directory is outside the gate and no gate regression results. run.mjs#71, run.mjs#100
7 P5 The link text says edict#NNN while the URL targets amblicit. draft/README.md#59-77

I found no counting, arithmetic, normalisation or provenance defect. Path normalisation is correct: the reports contain no /owned-data, /jim-recovery or /Users strings (grep -c gives 0 for both).

6. Fidelity grade

A−. I count 2 genuine drifts (findings 1 and 2) out of roughly 33 checked claims. Both are precision issues in descriptive prose, not false headline claims. All headline numbers, counts, pins and hashes match. The worst drift is finding 1: byte-literal acceptance is contradicted by the passing count-bytes probe, which could mislead a reader about which byte constructs the explicit publication admits.

7. Code Lawyer Verification Checklist (exact head a764d7587da146fb8534b26f41d4cd88376e6e29)

  • Head, base and tree identity. HEAD a764d75, tree 6aaa44b5. Base main d57c6a7, tree cdfbc834 equal to prerequisite c94511b. Retarget snapshot confirms base main.
  • Entire diff read. Five files, 2155 insertions and 51 deletions. All hunks read, including both JSON reports via structured jq.
  • Merge commits accounted for. f500296 and a764d75 carry only prerequisite-owned changes. 21b6f02 is the sole authored commit. No rewritten history.
  • Callers and imports. buildCompiler and the four relock helpers exist with matching signatures, unchanged. No other repository file references the inventory directory, so there are no external callers.
  • Doctrine. AGENTS.md rules checked: no any or unknown. No test reads documentation. The diff adds no test and does not touch quality-baseline.json. The new .mjs runner is outside the quality gate and is 123 lines, under the 500-line limit. Durable-decision ownership (docs/method/durable-decisions.md) was not read in full. This PR makes no new architecture or authority decision.
  • Constants and numerics. 27 = 22+1+4, 5 accepted, 1 accepted by default, and the log, reports and hashes match as in §2. Timeout and maxBuffer constants are bounded and uncontroversial.
  • Documentation claims. Tested as in §2. Drift is limited to findings 1 and 2.
  • Provenance. Commits and CLI version match the toolchain lock. The default provider manifest hash matches the lock. The lawpack hash matches the checked-in file. Draft hashes match. The binary hash and the module-provider manifest hash have no independent source on the host.
  • Clean checkouts, output ownership and baseline failure. Producers are checked for a clean status. Output is created non-recursively. A failed baseline throws after writing the report.
  • Executable evidence. inventory-command.log and .launch.json (RAN-BY-PARENT, inspected statically). They match the committed reports. They are not exact-head CI proof and I do not treat them as such.
  • Static versus ran. Separated in §4.
  • Limits and enforcement. Launch contract reviewed: 20 GiB build, 4 GiB data, 128 MiB logs, 900 s timeout, a 2-second fail-closed monitor, and bounded log rotation. I did not independently verify the guard's coverage.
  • Limitations disclosed. The official output directories are absent from the host. The cleanup record does not list them. The provider regeneration step is not in the official run. The wrong-digest case is untested.
  • CI and review unknowns. CodeRabbit is IN_PROGRESS, Actions runs are [], and there are no human reviews. Not established and outside my authority.
  • All findings listed. Seven items, P4 and P5 only, no blockers.
  • No prohibited claims. I made none about the candidate being a promoted checked provider, being independently reproduced, or about persistent-rope, cutover, effects, admission, WAL or recovery completion. No implementation-slice percentage is given.

VERDICT: APPROVE a764d7587da146fb8534b26f41d4cd88376e6e29.

Conditions. The parent must recheck CI and CodeRabbit before merge, since CI is unknown. Findings 1–3 are worth a follow-up documentation commit but do not block this PR, because none of them changes a count, pin, hash, classification of record or boundary claim.

I made no repository edits and wrote no plan file. This is a review, so there is nothing to implement. ExitPlanMode was not available to me in this session.

WATSON testimony

WATSON: first deposition (blind)

I read the target as its intended audience would. That audience is a Jim/jedit maintainer who has to decide what compiler and provider work blocks the persistent rope. The testimony covers clarity, structure, audience fit and honesty of framing only. I haven't seen the other detectives' work and I don't offer repairs yet.

Evidence basis and what I did

  • Head, base and tree. HEAD is a764d7587da146fb8534b26f41d4cd88376e6e29, tree 6aaa44b51dfb25c77346ea5097817ef9ecd8fd5d. The merge base with d57c6a7 is c94511b. The worktree was clean.
  • The range holds one non-merge commit and two merge commits (READ, git log of the range):
    • 21b6f02 is the only authored change.
    • f500296 merges febd603 and has 3 files, +13/−11.
    • a764d75 merges c94511b and has 4 files, +39/−16.
    • The merge-only files (docs/jim-component-ownership.md, edict/replace-range/README.md, edict.build-lock.json, tests/proof-harness.spec.mjs) are prerequisite repairs. I only counted them, which is a coverage limit.
  • The diff covers five files, +2155/−51.
  • Everything below is READ or static computation. I ran no application or test scripts and no Docker. A short inline python3 -I script tallied the committed JSON reports. I did not read the raw Docker logs, the CI snapshots or any other detective's output.

What the author did well

  1. Framing is honest about the explicit publication. README.md#44-48@a764d75 says the explicit publication is "an explicit consumer candidate assembled from checked components". It adds that the run does not promote a provider, prove reproducibility or grant authority. A careful reader can't miss that the five "accepted" cases come from a non-default provider.
  2. The negative scope is stated twice. README.md#62-65@a764d75 says accepted helpers are "deliberately narrow evidence" and have not been invoked at runtime. draft/README.md#47-49@a764d75 lists what an accepted build does not prove: execution, effects, admission, WAL, recovery and cutover.
  3. The runtime table was rewritten from status to evidence required. draft/README.md#100-108@a764d75 now has the column "Jim evidence still required". That replaces "absent (read)". It stops the table implying that Echo lacks primitives, and #96-98 says so explicitly.
  4. The compiler-vs-provider distinction is explained. README.md#39-42@a764d75 warns the reader to read stage and kind. The reports back this up. In current-source-modules.json the provider-reached cases bytes-escapes and list-literal have kind ProviderLowererRefused, and I read all 27 results.
  5. Counts reconcile with the prose. I counted 27 results in each report. The runner's own list has 22 cases (run.mjs#45-68@a764d75), plus one source-module case (#107) and four drafts (#108), which makes 27. The default report accepts only baseline (status 0). The source-module report accepts exactly baseline, unsigned-addition, count-bytes, utf8 and source-module. That matches the README's prose at #52-54. Compiler commit, Echo commit and binary SHA match the pins in the brief. current-source-modules.json#5 and current-default.json#5 carry the same binary hash. The provider manifest hashes differ between the two reports (#13 of each), as expected.

Stumbles

S1. No document says "27 cases" or shows the 22 + 1 + 4 breakdown.

  • Where: README.md@a764d75 as a whole. The only place to learn the shape is to read run.mjs.
  • What it costs: a maintainer can't tell from the prose that two reports each have 27 rows, or that five are accepted in one and one in the other.
  • Severity: moderate.

S2. The default report can't be reproduced from the README.

  • Where: README.md#24-33@a764d75 gives one run.mjs invocation, with --provider /owned-data/source-modules-provider.
  • What it costs: README.md#10-12 presents current-default.json as a committed result, yet no command or provider path for that run appears anywhere.
  • Severity: moderate. This is the biggest gap for a reader who wants to re-run.

S3. The command block has unexplained or contradictory details.

  • $JEDIT_ROOT is used at README.md#29@a764d75 and never defined.
  • README.md#15 says "the application's pinned … Rust releases", but #26 hard-codes cargo +1.96.0. The pin does exist, as edict.toolchain-lock.json#4 has "toolchain": "1.96.0". A reader can't tell whether the two are meant to stay in sync.
  • /owned-data/ and "the runner's accounted data root" (#18) are never connected to the guarded worker. "The runner" is ambiguous between run.mjs and the Docker guard.
  • Severity: minor.

S4. "Retains" over-promises what is in the repo.

  • README.md#12-13@a764d75 says "Each output case retains its full source and raw JSONL diagnostic streams". Only report.json-shaped files are committed.
  • The stdout.jsonl/stderr.jsonl and per-case sources are written by the runner at run.mjs#92-93 and #87, into a directory that isn't in the PR.
  • A reader skimming could think the raw diagnostic streams are in the repo.
  • Severity: minor to moderate.

S5. Three names for one case, and the "result" is the candidate.

  • The same baseline case is called "function-free baseline" (README.md#11@a764d75), "default-publication control" (#10) and "default flat-text reference … positive control" (#52).
  • README.md#7 titles the explicit-publication report "the source-module result" and the default one a "control". That makes the non-default candidate look like the headline.
  • This is mitigated by #44-48, but a reader hits the headline first.
  • Severity: minor.

S6. Diagnostic vocabulary mixes kind, message and stage.

  • draft/README.md#60@a764d75 names a kind (UnsupportedSourceShape).
  • #62 says an unbounded recursive helper "refuses with ReferenceCycle". In the report that is the message text of an UnsupportedSourceShape diagnostic, not the kind (current-source-modules.json#244@a764d75, "message": "ReferenceCycle: functions.probe").
  • #61 uses a kind plus a message in parentheses.
  • Since README.md#40-42 tells the reader to "read its stage and kind", this inconsistency works against the doc's own advice.
  • Severity: moderate for clarity. I assess accuracy, not just taste: the bare backticked word reads as a kind but is a message.

S7. b"\\n\\r\\x00" shows JS escaping, not the Edict source.

  • draft/README.md#66@a764d75 prints the probe literal with doubled backslashes. That is the JavaScript string at run.mjs#47, not the Edict byte literal that was compiled.
  • A reader could believe the source contains a literal backslash-backslash.
  • Severity: minor, but a real misread risk.

S8. "All measured entries refer to the exact compiler and Echo revisions above" (draft/README.md#55@a764d75) is followed by rows that were not measured.

  • Those rows say "Previously confirmed; not separately re-probed" (#63) or "Not re-probed" (#73, #77, #86).
  • Row #64 justifies slice/concat by "the current flat-text public-build baseline passes". That is indirect evidence, since the baseline doesn't isolate slice or concat.
  • "Previously confirmed" in #63 has no visible referent, because the old table that recorded it was removed in this diff.
  • The honest "not re-probed" labels are good. The sentence at #55 just reads as universal.
  • Severity: moderate for honesty of framing. I classify it as clarity, not as a verified falsehood.

S9. History narration in a current-truth document.

  • draft/README.md#84@a764d75: "This supersedes the earlier blanket refusal claim."
  • #94: "the earlier statement that its implementation was a draft is stale."
  • docs/method/documentation-lifecycle.md#5-12@a764d75 says documentation "describes what is true now" and that git history is the archive.
  • To a first-time reader these sentences reference a text they can't see. It is a clarity stumble and a doctrine tension. I do not rule on the doctrine point; that is for the technical detectives.
  • Severity: minor.

S10. The compiler-result claim at draft/README.md#47-49@a764d75 is uncited.

  • It says an accepted build "includes lowering and independent verification".
  • The reader is given no pointer to where that property is established. It could be a compiler stage or a doc claim.
  • Flagged for HOLMES. As a reader I took it on trust.
  • Severity: minor.

S11. Unchanged context that confuses a new reader.

  • draft/README.md#133 cites a "40-case oracle (6 committing, 34 obstructed)" with no link. This is not in the diff, but it sits in the document being read.
  • The "Used by: both / target 2" column depends on the table at #9-14, which is far from the tables that use it.
  • The mixed link labels, edict#263 text pointing at flyingrobots/amblicit/issues/263, appear 12 times and are only partly explained by #27 ("Amblicit (formerly Edict)").
  • Severity: minor.

S12. The recursive-type probe produces a second, unexplained diagnostic.

  • recursive-type emits InvalidCoreTypeIntegrity and also UnresolvedType: type ReplaceRangeInput is not declared in this module.
  • That second diagnostic is a cascade from the failed cycle and is not mentioned. A reader scanning the JSON could mistake it for a second finding.
  • Severity: minor. It is mine to flag, not a defect I'm asserting.

Readability of the runner (as an "audience" check)

run.mjs is 123 lines and readable, but it is a script without comments. Two things stop a reader:

  • The record function's six steps are not explained (run.mjs#77-99@a764d75).
  • The final guard, results[0].status !== 0 with a throw, runs only after all reports are written (#121-123). A reader might miss that a failed baseline still leaves a report.json on disk but fails the process.

I mention the second point as a readability observation. I make no behavioral finding from it.

Honesty-of-framing summary

  • Plans vs shipped fact: good. The runtime table separates "Jim evidence still required" from measured compiler boundaries. No rope, persistence, cutover, effect, admission, WAL or recovery completion is claimed. I found no sentence that narrates future work as present.
  • Candidate vs checked provider: honest at README.md#44-48@a764d75. The title framing (S5) and the draft/README.md#40-44 phrase "passes public build with Echo's explicit source-module publication" stay accurate.
  • Weakest honesty point: S8, the universal-scope sentence over a partly-unmeasured table.
  • Historical raw logs: not discussed in the docs. The README says nothing about the Docker evidence root or its partial cleanup. A reader can't learn from the PR text that large worker outputs were later deleted. That limit is only in the brief I was given.

Clarity grade: B

  • Why not A: a reader can't re-run the default report (S2), can't see the case counts (S1), and has to translate several mixed vocabularies (S5, S6, S7).
  • Why not C: the load-bearing boundaries (candidate vs checked provider, compiler vs provider refusal, no runtime evidence) are stated plainly and match the committed reports I tallied.

Stumble list, ranked

  1. S2: the default report has no reproduction command.
  2. S8: "All measured entries" is followed by un-measured rows.
  3. S6: kind, message and stage are mixed, including ReferenceCycle.
  4. S1: no case count or breakdown.
  5. S4: the "retains raw streams" implication.
  6. S3: $JEDIT_ROOT, the hard-coded toolchain, and "the runner".
  7. S5, S7, S9, S10, S11 and S12, all minor.

Repairs: withheld until second deposition (Repair Menu)

Plan mode was on, so I wrote no plan file and made no edits, commits or runs. The task needed none. I'm ready for the Repair Menu once both technical testimonies are in.

WATSON: second deposition, the Repair Menu

Evidence basis: PR385 head a764d7587da146fb8534b26f41d4cd88376e6e29, base d57c6a7. Citations are per file, path#line@a764d75. HOLMES and MORIARTY both APPROVE with no blocking findings. This menu is non-gating. I did no new investigation and ran nothing.

Corrections to my first deposition

  • S3's worry about the hard-coded toolchain is withdrawn. HOLMES confirmed cargo +1.96.0 matches edict.toolchain-lock.json#4. Only the undefined $JEDIT_ROOT and the vague "runner" remain.
  • S12 (the recursive-type cascade) stays CONJECTURE. HOLMES §3.3 reached the same reading and says only an experiment would settle it.

Convergence

  • All three of us hit the missing default command and $JEDIT_ROOT, the ReferenceCycle kind-vs-message mismatch, and the over-general byte-literal wording.
  • MORIARTY S3/S5 and HOLMES finding 1 supply the root cause for the byte wording. count-bytes contains b"\n" (run.mjs#64@a764d75) and is accepted. bytes-escapes also changes the return type and the escapes (run.mjs#47).

Typing

  • Binding means the merge or honesty gate fails without it.
  • Advisory means it improves the document and does not gate.
  • Binding for this PR: nothing from the three testimonies. CI at head and review state remain the parent's external gate (HOLMES §4, MORIARTY "CI and review").

Repair Menu, ranked by yield per effort

# Type Repair Concrete edit Effort Source
1 Advisory, docs Add the default-publication command and define JEDIT_ROOT compiler-inventory/README.md#24-33: define JEDIT_ROOT as the jedit checkout root. Add a second run.mjs call with --provider set to the checked default provider package and --output to a new directory. Say that the explicit-publication provider is generated first. Rename "the runner" at #18 to "the resource-guarded worker's data root". 10 min W-S2/S3, HOLMES F3, HOLMES reverse drift 1 and 4
2 Advisory, docs Qualify the bytes and list refusals to the exact probes README.md#55-56 and draft/README.md#66,68: say a helper returning a Bytes<exact=3> literal with \n\r\x00 escapes, and a helper returning a list literal, are refused by the candidate provider. Add that count(v, b"\n") is accepted. Drop "Byte literal helpers" as a class. At README.md#57-58, change "still refuse" to "refused by these probes". Optionally write b"\n\r\x00" with single backslashes in prose, so the code span matches the Edict source rather than the JS string. 10 min HOLMES F1, MORIARTY S5, W-S7
3 Advisory, docs Fix the recursive-function diagnostic wording draft/README.md#62: write "refuses as UnsupportedSourceShape (message ReferenceCycle: functions.probe)". current-source-modules.json#244@a764d75 is the evidence, and other rows already name kinds. 2 min HOLMES F2, W-S6
4 Advisory, docs Say "candidate provider", not "checked provider" draft/README.md#68: replace "the checked provider refuses the helper" with "the explicit candidate provider refuses it". The default publication refuses this case earlier, with InvalidProviderInvocation. 2 min MORIARTY S3
5 Advisory, docs Say "digest-bearing positive module" README.md#53-54 and draft/README.md#41,65: replace "digest-authenticated" with "a module import carrying the correct digest passes". Add that the inventory has no wrong-digest control. This avoids implying a rejection proof the inventory does not contain. 5 min HOLMES F5, MORIARTY S1
6 Advisory, docs State counts and retention boundaries README.md: add one paragraph. Each report has 27 results (22 construct probes, 1 source module, 4 whole drafts). The default report accepts 1 and the source-module report accepts 5. Only the report.json-style summaries are committed. Per-case sources and raw JSONL stay in the unrecorded output directory, which was cleaned from the evidence root, so the reports cannot be re-checked against raw output. Soften #12-13 ("retains") to match. 10 min W-S1/S4, HOLMES §4, MORIARTY S2 and limitations
7 Advisory, docs, optional Narrow the universal-scope sentence draft/README.md#55: say "Entries marked 'not re-probed' are carried forward without measurement". Define or drop "Previously confirmed" at #63. 5 min W-S8
8 Advisory, docs, optional Cite or soften "lowering and independent verification" draft/README.md#47-49: cite where this is established (MORIARTY reads edict/replace-range/README.md#100-104 as indirect support), or say "the public application build". 5 min MORIARTY S4, W-S10
9 Advisory, evidence, optional Wrong-digest negative control; isolate the function-table claim Add one probe that flips a digest nibble and expects refusal. Either would turn a differential inference into a measured fact (HOLMES F4). It changes the runner and reports, so it is out of scope for the bounded repair. hours, needs a Docker re-run HOLMES F4/F5, MORIARTY S1
10 Advisory, hygiene, optional Runner style; link-text drift run.mjs#71,100,107,109: magic numbers, redundant mkdirSync, long lines. draft/README.md#59-77: edict#NNN text pointing to amblicit. 15 min HOLMES F6/F7, MORIARTY S6/S7

Fatal strikes

None. MORIARTY's seven strikes are Low or Info. HOLMES's two drifts are P4. No cosmetic repair is being offered in place of a fatal one, because none exists.

Judgment

  • Parent's bounded repair. Items 1–6 cover exactly the six points the parent listed, and need no runner or report change. I'd add item 8's one-line softening, since it is the only remaining claim that no testimony found support for in this PR's own artifacts.
  • Cost of repair. A repair commit moves the head off a764d75. Both approvals and the CI run 41193066936 then apply to the previous head, and CI would have to be rechecked at the new head. Given non-gating findings, either option is defensible. The parent should choose with that cost in mind.
  • AGENTS. AGENTS.md forbids amending commits, so the edit must be a new commit. Tests must not read docs, so there is nothing to guard these edits.

Verdict: APPROVE for a764d7587da146fb8534b26f41d4cd88376e6e29.
I landed seven strikes, all Low or Info, and none changes a number, count or classification in the reports. CI and the review gate are still unknown, and that is an external gate rather than a code defect. Resilience grade: B+.

Citations are path#line@a764d75, numbered per file. I used plain Read/Bash, because Graft was not needed. I made no edits, commits, builds, tests, Docker runs or GitHub calls, and I did not read other detectives' output. Everything below was found by reading files, git objects and the retained logs, or by computing over the JSON with a short read-only script. I raw-executed nothing from the application or test code.

Strikes landed

# Sev Strike Evidence
S1 Low (P4) "Digest-authenticated" is claimed, but there is no negative control. The inventory shows only that a correct digest is accepted. It never shows that a wrong digest is rejected. compiler-inventory/run.mjs#104-107@a764d75 builds one positive module case. compiler-inventory/README.md#54-55@a764d75 and draft/README.md#41,65@a764d75 say "digest-authenticated". The only digest refusal is the draft parse error expected keyword digest, which shows a missing digest is rejected. The report also records only sources[0]'s hash (run.mjs#96@a764d75), so Library.edict is not in the report. CONJECTURE that a wrong digest is rejected. Experiment: flip one nibble of digest in the source-module case and expect a refusal.
S2 Low (P3) The runner does not bind the --provider directory to ECHO_REPO's commit. echoCommit is just that checkout's HEAD (run.mjs#114@a764d75), and the checkout is cleanliness-checked only once, at start (run.mjs#22-26@a764d75). The module candidate's manifest hash 14bab3fa… appears in no tree lock. The producer clones, provider directory and inventory-command-{default,modules} output directories are gone from the evidence root, so I could not re-check the report-level metadata against raw output. Static match for the default publication: 6e0154bf… equals edict.toolchain-lock.json#40@a764d75, and lawpack cf8f19b7… equals edict.build-lock.json#16@a764d75. The candidate's provenance rests on inventory-modules.launch.json plus operator assertion. The PR text says "candidate", so this is not a false claim.
S3 Low (P4) "Checked provider" wording contradicts the README's own caveat. draft/README.md#68@a764d75 says "the checked provider refuses the helper" for list literals. compiler-inventory/README.md#44-46@a764d75 says the candidate is not a promoted checked provider. In the default publication the same case fails earlier with InvalidProviderInvocation (current-default.json, list-literal), so only the candidate refuses at the provider.
S4 Low (P4) The "accepted build includes lowering and independent verification" claim (draft/README.md#47-48@a764d75) has no support in this PR's retained artifacts. Acceptance in the runner is exit code 0 and no diagnostics (run.mjs#91-98@a764d75). stdout.jsonl is not parsed or committed. The claim is supported indirectly, by edict/replace-range/README.md#100-104@a764d75 describing the app build for the committed application. CONJECTURE that the probe builds behave the same. Experiment: inspect unsigned-addition/stdout.jsonl for a verifier-report event.
S5 Low (P4) Attribution by differential inference. The bytes-escapes and list-literal refusals both carry the generic subject core.source-functions ("outside the checked pure-function profile"). The same publication accepts other source functions, so the attribution to byte or list content is reasonable. But those probes also change the return type, so type and literal are confounded. Parse-stage probes (where, fails, ++, <T>) test one guessed syntax. current-source-modules.json bytes-escapes, list-literal, function-precondition, typed-pure-failure. The draft README is honest here ("Function where refuses in parsing", #74). The inventory README's "still refuse" (#57-58) is slightly stronger.
S6 Low (P5) Three small doc and robustness points. (a) draft/README.md#66@a764d75 shows a double-backslash b"\\n\\r\\x00" in a code span, but the actual source has single backslashes (run.mjs#47@a764d75). (b) Link text edict#263 points at amblicit/issues/263 (#59,76). (c) The anchor replace at run.mjs#106@a764d75 would no-op silently with no assertion. Here it did apply, because the source-module source hash e22be403… differs from the baseline's 0ed3af32….
S7 Info run.mjs is outside the quality gate. The gate scans src/*.ts and only measures line count on spec/ and tests/ .mjs files (scripts/quality-gate.mjs#7,11,291-292@a764d75). Lines 107 and 109 are 171 and 174 characters against the 160 limit, and line 71 has magic numbers (120000, 2*1024*1024). CI does not run the inventory (no reference in .github or docs/method/ci.md#5-14@a764d75). The PR is a one-time measurement artifact, so reproducibility rests on the retained logs.

Attacks that failed

  • Arithmetic. The case list has 22 entries (run.mjs#46-67), plus 1 source module and 4 drafts, giving 27. Both reports have 27 results with identical names, order and sourceSha256, and all 27 hashes are distinct. The default run accepts only baseline (1), and the module run accepts 5: baseline, unsigned-addition, count-bytes, utf8 and source-module. Four cases flip status. Two (bytes-escapes, list-literal) change only kind, from InvalidProviderInvocation to ProviderLowererRefused.
  • Report vs raw log. inventory-command.log has 54 lines. Lines 1-27 equal current-source-modules.json results exactly, and lines 28-54 equal current-default.json results exactly. inventory-command.launch.json shows the module run first, then the default run, in the guarded worker. The caps in it are 20 GiB build (measured about 17.8 GB), 4 GiB data (about 3.0 GB), 128 MiB logs (about 105 MB) and a 900 s timeout.
  • Pins. The compiler 980c3ae…, Echo 9c32e0b5… and CLI version 0.11.0-alpha.1 match edict.toolchain-lock.json#31-36. The report's lawpack and provider-manifest hashes match the locks (see S2).
  • Compiler vs provider refusals. These are distinguished correctly. Stages are parse, resolve, typeCheck and cli. Kinds ProviderLowererRefused and InvalidProviderInvocation appear only for the six provider-boundary cases.
  • Path leakage. The reports contain no /Users, /jim-recovery or /owned-data paths. All paths are ./<case>/….
  • Baseline failure handling. The report is written and then the run throws (run.mjs#121-123@a764d75), and a timeout or signal throws (#73). Both fail closed.
  • Output ownership. Non-recursive mkdirSync(destination) (#29) refuses an existing path, and the README directs outputs to the accounted data root. I found no write outside destination.
  • Merge hygiene. git diff --cc over f500296 and a764d75 shows zero conflicted files. The diff from d57c6a7 to HEAD is exactly the five scoped files, +2155/-51, and outside those files the diff is empty. d57c6a7 is the merge of fix(deps): restore and prove the current Echo/Amblicit relock #384 whose second parent is c94511b. d57c6a7..HEAD has 3 commits: 21b6f02, f500296, a764d75. Nothing was rewritten.
  • Locks and snapshots. Editing draft/README.md does not trip a lock. snapshotAuthoritativeInputs (package-chain.mjs#189-207@a764d75) only compares before and after, and no lock pins that file.
  • Over-claims. None found. The no-claim list is consistent: no persistent rope, cutover, effects, admission, WAL or recovery (compiler-inventory/README.md#62-65, draft/README.md#47-49,91-98). Accepted helpers are called non-runtime evidence.

Limitations and unknowns

  • Not independently reproduced. The producer clones and inventory-command-* outputs are absent from the evidence root. retained-inventory-cleanup.json covers different directories. inventory-results is the exploratory output, and I did not treat it as the official run. The rerun was never reproduced, only the per-case results compared against the raw log.
  • Echo claims. Whether source_functions_publication_witness exists at 9c32e0b5 is UNVERIFIABLE here, though inventory-modules.launch.json records it being run. "echo#921 has merged" (draft/README.md#94) is UNVERIFIABLE offline.
  • Stale PR body. jedit-pr385-current.json describes head f500296 and base fix/compiler-relock. The parent should refresh the PR text. That is not a code defect.
  • CI and review.
    • jedit-pr385-checks-current.json shows only CodeRabbit IN_PROGRESS, and jedit-pr385-runs-current.json is [].
    • The required check job has no observed run.
    • jedit-pr385-review-current.json has no review threads and reviewDecision null.
    • The snapshots were saved at 03:26 and may be stale. The merge gate is therefore unknown.

Code Lawyer Activity Summary and final Claude Sonnet approvals — f14fe2c07447987a9964ebc6060d6b7da700e42c

HOLMES and MORIARTY independently APPROVE this exact head with complete verification checklists. Fidelity A, resilience A−. Same WATSON’s non-gating repair menu informed the bounded documentation corrections; initial blind clarity grade B is preserved without inventing a later grade.

Item Severity / source Fix Validation / disposition
Over-general literal refusals; diagnostic kind vs message; candidate vs checked provider P4, Sonnet 433511d Exact probe scope, correct UnsupportedSourceShape kind and ReferenceCycle message, candidate-provider wording, actual Edict escapes
Reproduction/count/retention and wrong-digest scope P4, Sonnet 433511d Both publication commands, checkout-root setup, 27=1+21+1+4, positive digest-bearing module scope; no wrong-digest rejection proof claimed
Provider source vs Echo checkout metadata P2, CodeRabbit thread PRRT_kwDOSCKBn86yQCRl; overlaps Sonnet S2 f14fe2c echoCheckoutCommit names the observed checkout; manifest hash binds independently selected provider bytes. Original-output contract RED; real Docker 27-case default rerun GREEN, exact committed report bytes reproduced, exact runner SHA checked. Published before thread resolution
Original evidence availability Inspection/export; no source change Guarded read-only recovery Clean producer roots, saved compiler and provider hashes verified inside Docker; bounded original artifacts exported. Earlier “gone” inference from missing host paths is withdrawn
Data pressure Owned duplicate cleanup Verified retention receipt 54 provider copies compared file-by-file to preserved canonical publications before removal; 58,390,686 file bytes reclaimed. Unique sources/streams/packages/reports retained; canonical archive independently checked against all 50 file hashes
Wrong-digest negative, provider-origin enforcement, runner style and link text Advisory Deferred Disclosure narrows the claims. No new broad probes/refactor or promoted-provider/runtime claim

Final local measurement: build 15,284,376,635 B, data 4,117,771,323 B, accounted logs 107,190,271 B; unchanged 20 GiB / 4 GiB / 128 MiB budgets. Four CPUs, six GiB memory, fail-closed guard and 900 s command deadline; worker stopped and lease released. No host tests or hook bypass.

The source-module report was not rerun for this relabel: its 27 case records remain equal to the original capture, with only the metadata key normalized. The default report was freshly produced byte-for-byte by the real command. Old-head CI cannot certify this head; exact-head CI and current review state remain separate merge gates. Full final testimonies follow, with only machine-local evidence paths sanitized.

HOLMES final testimony

HOLMES testimony: PR385 at f14fe2c07447987a9964ebc6060d6b7da700e42c

VERDICT: APPROVE this exact head. Fidelity grade A. I found no binding defect.

Evidence basis: worktree jedit-source, HEAD f14fe2c (tree 3d1172ca…), base main d57c6a7. Citations are path#line@f14fe2c. READ means static git, jq, shasum, cmp and diff. PARENT-RAN means raw Docker output I inspected but did not produce. I made no edits, builds, tests or Docker calls.

1. Head, scope and merges

  • Head and tree. HEAD f14fe2c has tree 3d1172ca…, matching the brief. The worktree is clean. READ
  • Commits. git log d57c6a7..HEAD lists five:
    • 21b6f02: the inventory.
    • f500296 and a764d75: prerequisite merges, both unchanged since my first review.
    • 433511d: the documentation commit.
    • f14fe2c: new, a plain commit with parent 433511d, "label Echo checkout metadata without claiming provider provenance".
    • No new merge, rewrite or amend. READ
  • Delta. git diff --stat 433511d..HEAD shows five files with 14 insertions and 6 deletions:
    • compiler-inventory/run.mjs: 1 line.
    • current-default.json: 1 line.
    • current-source-modules.json: 1 line.
    • compiler-inventory/README.md: 9 changed lines.
    • draft/README.md: 5 changed lines. READ
  • Whole scope. git diff d57c6a7...HEAD is the same five files as before, now 2178 insertions and 52 deletions. The base tree equals the prerequisite c94511b. git diff --check is clean. READ
  • Code change. The only code change is run.mjs#114, which renames echoCommit to echoCheckoutCommit and keeps the same git rev-parse HEAD expression on echoRepository. Nothing else in the runner changed. READ

2. The relabel: claims against evidence

Claim Verdict Evidence
Both reports change only the key name CONFIRMED I normalised 433511d's report and HEAD's report by deleting the old key from one and the new key from the other (jq -S). diff is empty for both current-default.json and current-source-modules.json. The value is 9c32e0b5… in both. All 27 results, hashes and diagnostics are unchanged. The git diff shows exactly one -/+ line per file. READ
The old key is gone CONFIRMED jq 'has("echoCommit")' is false on both reports. READ
No other consumers CONFIRMED git grep echoCommit matches only scripts/deps/echo-edict-relock.mjs, where it is an unrelated local variable name (lines 205–285). No reader of the report field exists. The schema is new in this PR. READ
README says it is observed checkout metadata, not provider-source attestation CONFIRMED compiler-inventory/README.md#8-9 ("observed Echo checkout commit") and #20-24: the --provider directory is selected independently, its manifest hash binds the chosen bytes, and the checkout commit does not attest their source revision. draft/README.md#27-30 repeats this. The text adds no new provenance assertion. READ
Snapshots carry the original captured value under the new label CONFIRMED README.md#23-24 says so. The exported original modules-report.json has echoCommit 9c32e0b5…, and the normalised comparison below matches.
Provider provenance is still bound only by the manifest hash CONFIRMED providerManifestSha256 is unchanged in both reports (6e0154bf… default, 14bab3fa… modules). The first still equals edict.toolchain-lock.json#40.
27 results, 5 accepted and 1 default accepted CONFIRMED Unchanged from my previous review, because the result arrays are identical.

3. Raw evidence versus static computation

PARENT-RAN, inspected by me:

  • Contract RED. inventory-metadata-regression.log#1-24 shows inventory-metadata-contract.mjs failing on the original captured inventory-command-default/report.json. The assertion is "Echo identity must be explicitly checkout metadata", with actual undefined and expected 9c32e0b5…. It then prints METADATA_CONTRACT_RED_EXPECTED. This is a contract check on old output, not a re-execution of the old runner, as the brief says.
  • Runner identity. The launch command writes inventory-metadata-run.mjs to the clean tree and runs sha256sum --check against 4e05e9ce…56aa. The log shows …/run.mjs: OK, and inventory-metadata-regression.result.json records "exit": 0 and the same runnerSha256. I computed shasum -a 256 of the committed run.mjs and got 4e05e9ce086ab40ce2e6b7b40bf43cc933284e7d29bdc06cb3105a9eafec56aa. The runner executed is therefore byte-identical to the committed runner. READ
  • GREEN. The log ends CHECKOUT_METADATA_CONTRACT_PASS 27 9c32e0b5… 6e0154bf…. That is 27 results, the checkout commit and the default provider manifest hash.
  • Default snapshot. cmp inventory-checkout-metadata-default-report.json against the committed current-default.json reports byte equality. I confirmed this myself, so the default snapshot was freshly reproduced by the real public runner. READ
  • Module snapshot. The exported original modules-report.json with echoCommit deleted equals the committed current-source-modules.json with echoCheckoutCommit deleted (jq -S and diff). That is a key-only normalisation, not a re-run. The source-module candidate was not rerun, and its component was not reproduced. READ
  • Resource guards. inventory-metadata-regression.launch.json carries limits of 20 GiB build, 4 GiB data, 128 MiB logs and a 900 s timeout, with the pre-run measurements. The POST receipt shows build 15,284,376,635, data 4,117,771,323 and logs 107,190,271 bytes, with exit 0. All three are within the guards. Host free space is about 617 GB and VM free about 586 GB, over the 50 GiB floor. The lock receipt shows the job released. PARENT-RAN
  • Deduplication. inventory-provider-deduplication.json records 54 removed duplicates, freedFileBytes 58,390,686 and an empty skipped list. It names the canonical source roots (echo/schemas/edict-provider/package/v1 and source-modules-provider) and a preserved archive inventory-original-providers.tar.gz. The log confirms VERIFIED_DUPLICATE_PROVIDER_BYTES_RECLAIMED 58390686 copies 54 skipped 0. The archive exists (62 entries, sha256 b3777a65…). The first removal entry lists path, canonical source and size. READ

My static computations, not raw execution: the diffs, the normalised comparisons, the cmp, the runner shasum, and the git grep. I did not re-run any script.

Not verified by me:

  • I did not re-hash the 54 removed copies against their canonical sources, or unpack the archive.
  • I did not decode the CBOR packages.
  • The module report is not a re-run and the module component is not reproduced. The README says the same.

4. Earlier findings

Finding Disposition
Over-broad byte literal wording, ReferenceCycle kind, default command and JEDIT_ROOT, wrong-digest disclosure, 27-count wording Resolved at 433511d and unchanged here. Delta shows no change to those lines.
Provenance gap between provider and Echo checkout Resolved in wording by f14fe2c. The field now says "checkout", and the README states the limit. No stronger claim was made.
run.mjs style (magic numbers, redundant mkdirSync) Open, non-blocking. Outside the quality gate. Deferred.
edict#NNN link text Open, cosmetic.
Regeneration of the module provider not in the official command Disclosed. Not reproduced.
Tight data budget (96.5% earlier) Improved. Final data 4,117,771,323 B is about 95.9% of 4 GiB, and still within budget.

5. Review and CI limits

  • The new-head snapshot files jedit-pr385-f14fe2c-checks.json, -runs.json and -review.json were not read. I cannot state CI or review status for f14fe2c.
  • CI on the old heads cannot certify this one.
  • Per the brief, the CodeRabbit thread PRRT_kwDOSCKBn86yQCRl is fixed and resolved, and the old a764d75 review remains for reconciliation. I did not verify either independently. These are external gates, not code defects.
  • The nightly Jim run is not a rope proof, and no rope, cutover, effects, admission, WAL or recovery claim is made.

6. Verification checklist

  • Head, base and tree. HEAD f14fe2c, tree 3d1172ca…, base d57c6a7 (tree equal to c94511b), clean worktree.
  • Full diff and every merge. Five-file scope reread. f500296 and a764d75 are unchanged prerequisite merges. 433511d and f14fe2c are plain commits. No rewrite.
  • Delta fully read. One runner line, two one-line report changes, two README edits.
  • Numeric and documentation claims. The 27, 22, 21 and 5 counts are unchanged, and the new wording is precise and does not overclaim.
  • Raw evidence versus static read. Separated in §3.
  • Provenance. The runner SHA matches the executed runner. The default report is byte-equal to the fresh output. The module report matches the original, key excepted.
  • Resource compliance. Within 4 GiB, 20 GiB and 128 MiB, with the deduplication receipt and the archive present.
  • Consumers. None for the renamed field.
  • Earlier findings. Disposed in §4.
  • Limitations disclosed. No module re-run, no component reproduction, no wrong-digest control, and the removed copies and archive were not independently re-hashed.
  • Current CI and review. Unknown to me for this head, an external gate.
  • No prohibited claims. The candidate is not called promoted or independently reproduced, and no provider-source provenance is asserted.

Verdict: APPROVE f14fe2c07447987a9964ebc6060d6b7da700e42c. The approval is conditional on the parent confirming the new-head CI and the paginated review state before merge.

MORIARTY final testimony

433511d..f14fe2c Five files, +14/−6: run.mjs 1 line, two JSON snapshots 1 line each, the inventory README +8/−1, the draft README +3/−2

The run.mjs change is exactly one line, at run.mjs#114, echoCommit: → echoCheckoutCommit:. Each JSON snapshot changes only that key at line 4. All 27 case records are untouched, and I confirmed this by comparing the results arrays below.

Findings

I have no new strikes against the relabel. Details:

  • Relabel is complete and accurate. git grep echoCommit finds only scripts/deps/echo-edict-relock.mjs, where echoCommit is an unrelated local variable. No tracked consumer reads the old report key, so the "new schema in this PR, no consumers" claim holds.
  • README wording is correct and does not over-claim. compiler-inventory/README.md now says echoCheckoutCommit "identifies the clean checkout inspected by the runner", that --provider is selected independently, that the manifest hash binds the chosen bytes, and that the checkout commit "does not attest their source revision". It also says the snapshots use the new label for the original captured checkout value, with case results unchanged. The draft README says "observed Echo checkout" and "not a provider-source attestation". This closes my round-1 S2 observation with honest wording, without adding a new provenance assertion.
  • Remaining observation (nonblocking). The runner still does not bind --provider to ECHO_REPO by construction. The README now says so openly, so this is a disclosed limit, not a defect.

Static computations (mine, no execution)

All of these are comparisons over retained bytes.

  • Runner hash. git show HEAD:…/run.mjs | shasum -a 256 gives 4e05e9ce086ab40ce2e6b7b40bf43cc933284e7d29bdc06cb3105a9eafec56aa. That equals runnerSha256 in inventory-metadata-regression.result.json and the sha256sum --check line in the log, so the file the parent ran is byte-identical to the committed runner.
  • New default report vs committed. inventory-checkout-metadata-default-report.json (30,413 bytes) is byte-equal to current-default.json.
  • Original module report, normalized. Renaming echoCommit to echoCheckoutCommit in inventory-proof-original/modules-report.json gives an object equal to current-source-modules.json, including key order. Its results arrays are equal.
  • Original default report, normalized. The same normalization equals current-default.json. Schema, compiler commit, binary SHA, version, lawpack SHA, manifest SHA 6e0154bf… and all 27 results are equal.
  • Old key absent. echoCommit is absent from both committed reports. Each report has 27 results.
  • Dedup receipt. inventory-provider-deduplication.json lists 54 removed duplicates (27 per publication), 0 skipped, and the file-byte sum is 58,390,686. That equals freedFileBytes. It records the canonical source paths and names the archive inventory-original-providers.tar.gz, which lists 62 entries.

Raw execution evidence (parent-run, read by me)

I read these logs and did not rerun anything.

  • RED then GREEN. inventory-metadata-regression.log shows the contract failing on the captured original default report with AssertionError: Echo identity must be explicitly checkout metadata (actual undefined, expected 9c32e0b5…) and METADATA_CONTRACT_RED_EXPECTED. That is a contract failing on captured output, not a re-execution of the old runner. The run then removed the duplicate provider copies, checked the runner SHA (OK), ran the actual public runner on 27 default cases, and ended with CHECKOUT_METADATA_CONTRACT_PASS 27 9c32e0b5… 6e0154bf….

  • Guards. The launch record shows a 900 s timeout and limits of 20 GiB build, 4 GiB data and 128 MiB logs. Measurements were:

    Before After

All are within the caps. The lock receipt shows the lock claimed on the two Docker worker paths and released. POST … EXIT 0.

  • What was not rerun. There was one actual rerun, of the default publication only. The module snapshot is a normalized copy of original bytes. No module rerun happened and no component reproduction happened. The source-module candidate is not promoted.

Old findings, final disposition

# Disposition
S1 digest control Resolved by wording (433511d). A wrong-digest probe is a deferred observation.
S2 provider↔Echo binding Resolved by relabel and README disclosure. A construction-level binding is a deferred observation.
S3 "checked provider" Resolved.
S4 verification claim Claim removed, and the retained verifier reports show accepted.
S5 attribution Resolved by wording.
S6 Backslash fixed. The edict#NNN link text pointing at amblicit/issues/NNN and the unasserted anchor replace at run.mjs#106 remain as P5 and low-risk nits.
S7 quality-gate scope Unchanged: run.mjs is not scanned and lines 107 and 109 exceed 160 characters. Not binding for a one-shot measurement script.

Resource guards Within 4 GiB / 20 GiB / 128 MiB per the launch record, workers stopped, leases released
Old findings All dispositioned above
Binding defects None
New-head CI UNKNOWN: jedit-pr385-f14fe2c-checks.json, -runs.json and -review.json do not exist in the evidence root yet. Pending CI is an external merge gate.
Review state UNKNOWN to me. You say thread PRRT_kwDOSCKBn86yQCRl is resolved and the old a764d75 review awaits reconciliation. I did not verify either.
Disclosed limits Not rerun for the module report. The runner does not bind --provider to ECHO_REPO. "echo#921 has merged" and the existence of Echo's witness example are unverifiable offline.

APPROVE for f14fe2c07447987a9964ebc6060d6b7da700e42c. The merge itself remains gated on live CI and review state for this head. My approval does not cover either.

Superseded after published verified repairs: 433511d corrects the literal and probe-boundary documentation; f14fe2c labels echoCheckoutCommit explicitly and removes provider-source attestation claims. Both threads are fixed/resolved. A real guarded 27-case public rerun reproduces the committed default report and passes the metadata contract. Independent Claude Sonnet HOLMES and MORIARTY approve exact f14fe2c with complete checklists attached. Repository rules and exact-head CI remain enforced.

Code Lawyer closure — MERGED

Head f14fe2c07447987a9964ebc6060d6b7da700e42c passed every required check in run 41194470510, with the run’s headSha explicitly verified. Claude Sonnet HOLMES and MORIARTY independently APPROVE with complete checklists. Baker Street: fidelity A, resilience A−; initial blind clarity B with its bounded repairs adopted. Adjudicated ship verdict ELEMENTARY.

Immediately before merge: actual head/base unchanged, CLEAN/MERGEABLE, both threads resolved after published fixes, zero active changes-requested reviews following explicit maintainer reconciliation, GitHub signature verified. Main’s PR/signature/thread/merge-only rules stayed enforced. No hook or protected-branch bypass.

Merged as cfcd0baa24b679c69ba2085a6eaa7b53e8c457e1. A fresh fetch verified origin/main equals that integration and contains the reviewed head. #370 is now CLOSED. The 54 original case results remain preserved; the corrected default report was freshly reproduced byte-for-byte by the real public runner, with an expected old-output metadata-contract RED and new-output GREEN. The module snapshot has metadata-key normalization only; no module rerun or component reproducibility claim.

The full pure-Edict persistent rope, stateful execution evidence and editor cutover remain open under #296. This PR lands the reproducible inventory and precise measured boundary, not those later obligations.
