Recover authored character-boundary helper and pinned draft closures - #386
Recover the authored character-boundary helper and digest-pinned transitive source modules from the preserved local branch. Text delegates to the bounded helper; inventory runs supply the actual module closure. Historical compiler/provider reports retain their original identities.
Independent Claude Sonnet Baker Street review found a real current/historical inventory-schema mismatch: the witness could omit the observed Echo checkout identity. The repair validates both schemas, rejects absent/malformed/conflicting identities, and preserves the v1 observation alias. Documentation now distinguishes finite historical conformance from proof and whole-rope acceptance.
Validation
Guarded Docker: seven digest/repinning/provenance tests pass; pin and syntax checks pass. Provenance regression first failed with the expected missing-identity assertion.
Retained public-artifact runtime replay: 61 boundary cases, invalid-input/resource/package-identity controls, and five retained-input substitutions pass. This replays the historical binary and artifacts; it is not a build with today's compiler.
New CI step runs the lightweight checks. Updating that workflow required regenerating its validation/source-closure locks from the real pinned compiler. All 13 package-proof harness tests pass in Docker; package identities and executable-subject-lock bytes remain unchanged.
Native Sonnet primary/repair testimonies are preserved verbatim in the external case bundle. The validation receipt was amended once to add the runtime-source hash and its explicit post-run limitation; the original remains in Git history. final exact-head approval is attached in the PR discussion. The temporary docs/cases/ bundle was removed from current repository documentation because the documentation-lifecycle policy forbids retaining documents solely as historical evidence. Its original bytes remain in Git history; current rules remain in DL-0159. No policy exception was introduced.
The documented shell recipe now refuses an existing consumer file before installing cleanup. A bounded Docker experiment reproduced the old overwrite/deletion and verified preservation plus owned-file cleanup after success/failure. Tests do not read documentation.
Scope
Advances #296; does not close it. The 61 helper cases are not the 40 full-operation oracle cases. Full Text/Reference/Rope/ReplaceRange compilation, persistent rope execution, structural sharing, admission, budgets, footprint, Tick/WAL/receipts and recovery remain open.

Possibly related issues
flyingrobots/jedit#296 — The issue concerns the ReplaceRange slice; this PR adds the boundary helper and pinned draft closure while leaving persistent-rope execution and full-operation acceptance open.
Possibly related PRs
flyingrobots/jedit#383 — It changes the same draft sources whose imports this PR pins, so those changes affect the generated pins and CI pin check.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 2e950
This change recovers the bounded character-boundary helper and pins its draft module imports by digest. The required replace-range package-chain CI job currently fails, because the workflow file edit was not reflected in its locked digest. Update the lock before merging. The remaining findings are documentation and evidence-hygiene items, and the reviewed code logic itself looks sound.

edict/replace-range/edict.toolchain-lock.json and dependent build lock
The new CI step changed .github/workflows/ci.yml without refreshing its validation/source-closure locks.

Regenerate from the real pinned public compiler outputs, confirm package/subject identities remain unchanged, run the full proof harness in Docker, then hosted CI.
The guard correctly refused stale evidence. No gate is bypassed, and the PR remains unmergeable until repair and verification finish. @codex
Committed the repair as 4864b62 (fix(edict): refresh validation source closure) and created the follow-up PR metadata titled “Refresh ReplaceRange validation source-closure locks.”

✅ git diff --check
⚠️docker --version (Docker is unavailable in this container, so the complete pinned package-chain proof must run in hosted CI.)
⚠️git clone --quiet https://github.com/flyingrobots/edict.git /tmp/jedit-edict (the environment’s outbound GitHub proxy returned HTTP 403, preventing a local pinned-compiler checkout.)
Retained helper replay passed its 61-case marker assertion plus 4 invalid-input, 5 resource and 1 identity controls; five retained-input substitutions also refused. This used historical artifacts and the retained binary, not a new helper compiler build. Full rope #296 remains open. Non-blocking hypothetical hardening experiments are listed in the case; they were not run or silently counted as completed.
Baker Street case and verbatim primary/repair testimony. Native Claude Sonnet final-head approval is reproduced verbatim below. Its opening “four files” count is a reviewer typo: the enumerated lock-repair delta contains five paths. No other testimony was edited. Required CI remains a separate gate.
WATSON: lock repair review at 63414a4762ee53987b8e27299def7485698963c9
APPROVE for 63414a4762ee53987b8e27299def7485698963c9, contingent on hosted CI passing. This extends my approval of 2e950e8. No source, test, or CI behavior changed since then, and the lock edits do what the failing check asked for.
What I read
Repair diff. Four files change:
the two locks;
the amended CASE_FILE.md;
the new WATSON-HEAD.md;
the case copy of the Docker GREEN log.
CI RED excerpt.
Failure:.github/workflows/ci.yml differs from the validation-environment lock, raised from verifyVersions in package-chain.mjs.
Mismatch: the check found c44cfe0c… where the lock expected b85f2e43….
Cause: the earlier workflow edit that added the draft-pin step changed ci.yml without regenerating the locks.
Reading: the check did its job and was not suppressed. It was a delivery omission from the earlier CI edit.
Actual files at HEAD.
edict.toolchain-lock.json records ci.yml as c44cfe0c… (line 27).
edict.build-lock.json records the same hash for project/.github/workflows/ci.yml (line 88).
ci.yml still contains the draft-pin step (lines 235–239).
Docker GREEN (authored-workflow-lock-green.log): 13 of 13 pass, 0 fail, 0 skipped.
Cross-checks done by reading
Hash chain is self-consistent.
Toolchain hash: the toolchain lock's file hash is 9ed519fc….
In the build lock:toolchainLockSha256 (line 5) and the application/edict.toolchain-lock.json entry (line 20) both carry that value.
Recorded changes: the source-closure digest moved to 85eb1904…, and the ci.yml entries moved to c44cfe0c….
Only the claimed fields changed.
Edited hunks: exactly four.
Untouched digests: the package, report, Target IR and executable-subject digests in the build lock (lines 102–145) are unchanged.
Executable-subject lock: it does not appear in the diff at all. This agrees with your report of byte-identical artifacts and an unchanged subject lock.
The "drift is refused" tests remain. Tests 10 and 11 (rejects_drifted_build_and_executable_subject_locks, rejects_drifted_executable_subject_lock), 12 (required_ci_executes_the_exact_package_chain) and 13 (compiler_selection_helper_is_bound_by_the_build_source_closure) are in the GREEN output. The locks weren't loosened; they were regenerated and re-validated.
Verification checklist
Source. No source changes. The lock edits are data derived from the pinned compiler's output. I did not recompute any hash. Equality of the pre- and post-lock artifacts is the parent's claim, and I confirmed only that the diff touches nothing beyond those four fields.
Tests. I ran nothing. Evidence is the parent's Docker GREEN: 13 of 13. The earlier pin and provenance tests (5 of 5) are unchanged and not rerun, and hosted CI is the open gate. I did not diff the case-folder .txt copy against the .log byte for byte. I confirmed the summary counts in the .log and that the copy has the same TAP shape.
Security and integrity. The workflow-hash check fired as designed and was fixed by regeneration, not weakened. Residual: the lock proves the workflow bytes the proof used. Any future edit to ci.yml will trip it again, which is intended.
Architecture. No change.
Docs. The CASE_FILE.md addition is accurate against what I read. It names hosted run 41269735928, and the excerpt I saw carries no run ID, so I take that number as reported. It says the repair covers lock metadata only and states that Sonnet approval and hosted CI must cover the final commit. That matches my position.
Custody note.WATSON-HEAD.md committed in the repo is my earlier 2e950e8 confirmation and covers that head only. This deposition covers 63414a4, and it will be attached outside Git, so no further commit is needed for it.
Limitations. Unchanged. This is helper recovery, not the rope or the 40 oracle cases (Slice: Author and prove Jim's first Edict operation ReplaceRange #296). The old-binary replay is not a new compiler build, and the lazy-evaluation assumption is documented but not mutation-tested. The non-blocking experiments stay untested and uncertified.
VERDICT: APPROVE — 63414a4762ee53987b8e27299def7485698963c9
basis: lock-metadata-only delta over approved 2e950e8; locks and CI RED/GREEN read
prior blockers: none open; the stale-hash CI failure is resolved by regenerated locks
contingent on: hosted CI green and ordinary repository merge gates

Code Lawyer late-review closure at d26a300f57e1d33a80a73e02422036cd3ce71084:
Workflow-lock finding was already fixed in 63414a4 (13 Docker proof cases and all 12 hosted checks passed at that head).
6803bcd fixes the documented destructive overwrite/cleanup order; bounded Docker RED/GREEN verifies sentinel preservation and owned cleanup.
541a5d1 adds missing/duplicate-import and unknown-draft refusal coverage; all 7 focused tests pass.
d26a300 removes the historical case documents from the current tree under the existing lifecycle rule. All 14 files were copied and hash-compared before removal; reviewer testimony remains verbatim outside Git and in history. No documentation-policy exception was added. The external validation receipt now includes the runtime source hash, with a post-run-only limitation.
All 13 late review threads have specific replies and are resolved. CodeRabbit has acknowledged the addressed findings in its replies. Its request-changes review was for old head 2e950e8; the user-selected native Claude Sonnet has independently approved the final head below. Hosted CI remains separate.
Historical case snapshot: 63414a4 case. This link intentionally points to history, not current documentation.
APPROVE for d26a300f57e1d33a80a73e02422036cd3ce71084. I found no remaining blockers. CI is a separate merge gate and I make no claim about it. My earlier deposition stands unedited, and the two input-path corrections you gave me resolve the open items from it. I ran nothing, and I did not re-hash any file.
What the corrected inputs show
Name-status diff (authored-recovery-late-names.txt). It lists 14 D entries, all under docs/cases/2026-10-31-authored-boundary-recovery/, and two M entries: draft-modules.test.mjs and text-boundary/README.md. Nothing else changed since 63414a4, so the 13-case package harness result there is not touched by this delta (none of these paths are in the build lock's source closure).
Receipt. The amended validation-receipt.json in the external copy now carries the runtime.rs hash 1a12e37a…. That matches the Docker log's printed hash. It also has a runtime_source_limit stating this is a post-run comparison of the source and that the retained executable was replayed, not rebuilt, so it is not a source-to-binary attestation. That is the accurate wording. The move manifest's pre-amendment hash for that file is consistent with your explanation.
Shell probe (authored-shell-guard-probe.py). I traced all four checks.
Old order, sentinel present: the file is overwritten, then deleted by the trap. That is the logged RED.
New order, sentinel present:set -eu aborts at the existence check, before cp and before the trap is installed. The sentinel is untouched.
Success path: the owned copy is removed.
Failing command: it is also removed. That case swaps a failing command in for the final one, and it did fail.
Scope: the probe never opens documentation. It models the recipe with relative filenames, so it tests the ordering logic and not the literal README text, the $ECHO_REPO path, or the cargo step.
PR body. It records the removal of docs/cases/ and why: the documentation-lifecycle rule against keeping documents solely as historical evidence. It also says the original bytes remain in Git history, no policy exception was introduced, and the work advances Slice: Author and prove Jim's first Edict operation ReplaceRange #296 without closing it. Its test claims match the logs I read (7 of 7, 13 of 13, the expected-RED provenance failure).
Two small notes, not blockers
The PR body says the validation receipts are "preserved verbatim" in the external bundle. The external validation-receipt.json was amended once to add the runtime hash, and the original is in Git history. Saying "amended once" would be more exact.
Readers of the public PR can reach the earlier testimonies and receipts only through Git history, since the external bundle is on one workstation.
Verification checklist
Source: the delta is the two tests and the README recipe. The refusal messages match the assertions.
Tests: read-only. 7 of 7 and the shell RED/GREEN are the parent's results. Hosted CI is not covered by this confirmation.
Security and integrity: a pre-existing consumer file is no longer deleted. The pin refusal paths are covered.
Architecture: no change.
Docs: the deletion follows the lifecycle rule and is recorded in the PR body. DL-0159 is unchanged.
Limitations: unchanged. This is helper recovery, not the rope or the 40 oracle cases. The lazy-evaluation assumption is untested by a mutant. The retained-binary replay is not a new compiler build.
VERDICT: APPROVE — d26a300f57e1d33a80a73e02422036cd3ce71084
blocking: none
tests run by this reviewer: none
CI: separate merge gate, not asserted here
Superseded after all 13 findings were addressed with replies/resolved threads in 63414a4, 6803bcd, 541a5d1 and d26a300. No findings are waived. Per the user-selected reviewer, independent native Claude Sonnet Baker Street APPROVE covers exact head d26a300 with verification checklist: #386 (comment) . CI remains a separate merge gate.
Merged normally at 696e2fe after all 12 non-CodeRabbit checks succeeded, all 15 review threads were resolved, and native Claude Sonnet approved exact head d26a300. The superseded old-head CodeRabbit change-request was dismissed only after every finding was addressed and the selected independent reviewer approved; its optional check was skipped, not counted as approval. Fetched origin/main and verified it contains the reviewed head. The owned worktree is clean and synchronized. Full authored persistent-rope acceptance in #296 remains open.

Outcome
Validation
docs/cases/bundle was removed from current repository documentation because the documentation-lifecycle policy forbids retaining documents solely as historical evidence. Its original bytes remain in Git history; current rules remain in DL-0159. No policy exception was introduced.Scope
