fix: never broadcast our commitment transaction from restored channel monitors - #97
Conversation
… monitors Channel monitors restored from a static channel backup are outdated, so a commitment transaction built from them (e.g. to time out an expired HTLC contained in the backup) is likely revoked and allows the counterparty to claim the whole channel balance with a penalty transaction. When monitors are restored, refuse to broadcast any transaction spending their funding outputs. The channels are recovered by the counterparty force-closing them. End-to-end regtest test for restoring channel monitors from a static channel backup that contains an outbound HTLC which has expired by the time of the recovery. The restored node must not broadcast its revoked commitment transaction, and must recover its channel balance once the counterparty force-closes the channel. Fails without the previous commit: the restored node force-closes due to the HTLC timeout and broadcasts the revoked commitment transaction. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
hub-recovery restores channel monitors from a static channel backup via
restore_encoded_channel_monitorsand relies on the peers force-closing the channels. The restored monitors are always outdated: the backup is taken at some point in the past, and the stored monitor is itself only fully rewritten every 100 updates or every few blocks (MonitorUpdatingPersister). If such a monitor contains an HTLC that has since expired (outbound, or inbound with a known preimage), LDK broadcasts our commitment transaction from it (
should_broadcast_holder_commitment_txn). That commitment is most likely revoked, so the peer can claim the whole channel balance with a penalty transaction. The same happens when hub-recovery is re-run on top of a previous run's data (the persisted channel manager force-closes the monitors without matching channels).Trying to avoid HTLCs at backup time doesn't help existing backups, and is racy and incomplete (e.g.
ListBalances'*_htlc_rounded_msatfields only hold the sub-satoshi remainder of non-dust HTLCs).Fix
When monitors are restored, the
TransactionBroadcasterrefuses to broadcast any package containing a transaction that spends the funding output of a loaded channel monitor, and logs an error instead.restore_encoded_channel_monitorswas used, which Alby Hub never calls. hub-recovery picks it up by bumping its ldk-node dependency.Trade-off: if a peer never force-closes, recovery can't fall back to broadcasting our own commitment — which isn't safe with an outdated monitor anyway.
