feat(usage): send the install week with the daily count, for cohort retention - #1478
The daily usage count cannot measure retention: each ping gets a fresh random ID, on purpose. This adds the Brave-style answer, without an identifier: every app_active event now carries install_week, the ISO week the app was installed (for example 2026-W44). Actives per week grouped by install week give cohort retention.
Payload
New property: install_week, an ISO week in UTC, or "unknown" when the install cannot be dated.
Nothing else changes: distinct_id stays random per ping, GeoIP stays off, no person profile.
How the week is set
Dated by the creation time of the userData folder (birthtime, mtime as fallback). Electron creates it on first launch, so a fresh install gets the current week and an existing install gets its real one.
Stored once in usage-ping.json after PostHog accepts the ping, "unknown" included, so an install never changes cohort.
Privacy docs
website/docs/faq.md and website/src/pages/privacy.mdx, plus all 7 translations, list the new field and say it is shared by every install of that week, not an identifier.
The privacy policy's stated purpose now mentions retention; "Last updated" is 4 November 2026.
Checks
electron/usage-ping.test.ts: install week from birthtime or mtime, "unknown" fallback, fresh install, persisted value, and no ID-like value in the payload.
Both typechecks and Biome pass; the website builds for all 8 locales.
Anonymous usage counts now include the installation week, or unknown when it cannot be determined. Installations from the same week share this value.
Counts indicate whether they are an installation’s first count of the week and month.
Documentation
Privacy notices and FAQs explain the installation-week data, clarify that it is shared by installations from the same week and is not an identifier, and describe updated analytics disclosures, including measuring continued use in the weeks after installation.
…etention
Each app_active ping now carries install_week, the ISO week of installation (or unknown), persisted in usage-ping.json so an install never changes cohort. It is dated by the userData directory's birthtime (mtime fallback), which also gives a fresh install the current week. No identifier is added. FAQ and privacy policy updated in all locales.
Usage pings now include an installation week derived from the user-data directory’s birth time. The value is retained after an accepted response. Tests cover derivation, validation, persistence, and payload properties. FAQs and privacy notices describe the field across supported languages.

Summary
Derive and persist the installation week electron/usage-ping.ts, electron/usage-ping.test.ts
The ping reuses a saved installation week or derives one from directory birth time. It uses "unknown" when the date cannot be determined, includes install_week in the payload, and saves the value after an accepted response. Tests cover derivation, validation, persistence, and payload properties.
Document installation-week reporting in FAQs website/docs/faq.md, website/i18n/*/docusaurus-plugin-content-docs/current/faq.md
The FAQs list the installation week in the PostHog count and clarify that installations from the same week share the value and that it is not an identifier. The French FAQ also clarifies when AI providers receive chat and project or subtitle data.
Document installation-week reporting in privacy notices website/src/pages/privacy.mdx, website/i18n/*/docusaurus-plugin-content-pages/privacy.mdx
The notices describe the installation-week value, its "unknown" fallback, and its shared, non-identifying nature. They also add measuring continued use weeks after installation to the stated purpose and update the last-updated date.

Inject the stat source so the install-week test covers birthtime precedence.
The install-week tests call installWeekFrom directly. The sendUsagePing tests use a freshly created directory whose birthtime and mtime fall in the same week. A change that dates installs from mtimeMs alone in sendUsagePing would pass every test. Accept a stat function as a parameter, so a test can supply different birthtime and mtime values.

"unknown" instead of falling back to mtimeMs.

…ed week
A missing birthtime now gives unknown: mtime moves with the folder and the week is kept for good once sent. A stored installWeek that is not an ISO week (01-53) or unknown is re-derived. The fresh-install test reads the expected week from the directory, not the clock.
Assert that mtimeMs is ignored when birthtimeMs is 0.
The zero-birthtime assertions omit mtimeMs. The test name states that the install is dated by birthtime and never by mtime, but these inputs do not check that. A change that falls back to mtimeMs when birthtimeMs is 0 would still return "unknown" for these inputs and pass. The current implementation ignores mtime, so this is a coverage gap rather than a defect. The added case uses a variable that carries a valid mtimeMs. It fails if mtime becomes a fallback.

The zero-birthtime assertions do not verify that a valid modification time is
ignored. In the test covering install dating, add an assertion that passes an
input with birthtimeMs set to zero and a valid mtimeMs to installWeekFrom, and
confirm it still returns “unknown.”
