When an instructor presents slides with the table-of-contents sidebar collapsed (for example, to maximize screen space), students following along on their own devices have no way to see which section or slide number is currently being presented.

Add a compact floating pill in the bottom-right corner that displays the active section number (e.g., 81.8) whenever the sidebar is hidden on numbered pages. Clicking the pill reopens the sidebar, and the pill stays hidden when the sidebar is visible, on unnumbered pages, in the speaker notes popup, and when printing.

Why on the right, rather than on the left where the sidebar appears?

Why on the right, rather than on the left where the sidebar appears?

Mostly just following the standard slide deck convention (slide numbers in the bottom-right) and keeping it away from left-aligned code blocks where there's plenty of empty space. (It's also set up with inset-inline-end so it mirrors to the left for RTL languages).

Open to moving it to the left if you think that feels more intuitive next to the sidebar toggle, though!
