Closes #83

What

  • Env.Listening reads where a server listens: a Unix socket path, a TCP address or the host's PORT, the first set winning.
  • ServeListening serves there with the same drain as Serve. A socket it creates has mode 0600 from the start. Sockets need Linux.
  • On a socket, the visitor's address comes from one named header into RemoteAddr. A request without one address gets 400. The header is dropped from every request.
  • OverSocket tells a handler that a request came over a socket.
  • After a set time with nothing open, the run ends with no error, so serve exits 0. A connection a handler takes over, such as a WebSocket, counts until it closes. A start whose server has no read timeout is refused, since one connection could then stay open forever.
  • Two starts on one socket never remove each other's socket. Each holds a lock on <socket>.lock while its socket exists.
  • The example program serves through ServeListening, and CI vets gonsole for darwin and windows.

Why

Downstream applications must run on shared hosting, where every account can reach every loopback port and idle programs get stopped. Serve stays as it is, so a program that keeps calling it sees no change.

Testing Instructions

None by hand. CI runs every test, the socket tests on Linux.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added configurable TCP and, on Linux, Unix socket listening, with settings for socket paths, ports, client address headers, and idle server exit.
    • Unix socket requests can use a configured header to provide the visitor address; invalid or missing addresses are rejected. The header is removed before requests reach handlers.
    • Unix sockets use restricted permissions and prevent conflicting server starts.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Server startup now validates listening and timeout settings before opening a listener.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds listener configuration for TCP and Linux Unix sockets, visitor address handling for socket requests, and idle-run shutdown. The example application uses the new listener API. Tests cover listener selection, socket behavior, shutdown, and process handling.

Changes: Listener and Unix-socket serving

Adds Linux socket path checks, lock-aware startup, stale-socket handling, and mode 0600 creation. Non-Linux builds return an unsupported-platform error. Tests cover socket permissions, lifecycle, locking, request validation, and application startup.
Idle-run tracking and process tests
gonsole/idle.go, gonsole/listen_internal_test.go, gonsole/listen_test.go, gonsole/exec_test.go, gonsole/stall_internal_test.go
Tracks open connections and active requests to end a run after the configured idle interval. Tests cover idle timing, cancellation, stalled request bodies, shutdown, and process signal handling.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Document that an idle exit ignores hijacked connections whose handler returned.

On http.StateHijacked, see releases the connection. After that, only the wrap hold counts the connection, and only while the handler runs. A common WebSocket pattern upgrades the connection, starts read and write goroutines, and returns from the handler at once. The gorilla/websocket chat example works this way. With that pattern, open drops to 0 while the hijacked connection is still in use. After IdleExit, fire ends the run. The process then exits and drops the live session.

Listening.IdleExit says the run ends "with nothing open". The CHANGELOG says "once nothing has been open". Both texts promise more than the tracker can deliver: the server cannot see a hijacked connection after the handler returns.

Fix this in one of two ways:

  • State the limit in the Listening.IdleExit doc comment, in the CHANGELOG entry, and in the see comment. Handlers that hijack must stay running for as long as the connection is in use.
  • Or add a hold/release API that handlers can call to keep the run open, for example a context value that wrap sets.
📝 Proposed doc fix
-// see counts a connection from its new state until it closes or is hijacked.
+// see counts a connection from its new state until it closes or is hijacked.
+// A hijacked connection counts only while its handler runs, so a handler that
+// hands the connection to another goroutine and returns no longer keeps the run open.

[High impact] Safe to merge with respect to the reviewed concerns. All four previously reported problems are addressed, and no blocking findings remain.

Summary

Adds Env.Listening and ServeListening for TCP addresses, the host's PORT, or private Linux Unix sockets.

  • Servers can choose a listener from settings before they start.
  • Socket requests deliver the visitor address to handlers.
  • Servers stop cleanly after a quiet period with no open work.
  • Linux servers can listen on a private Unix socket.
