Part of #314. This covers the double-encoded query and request.ip items. The crash in multi-value mode is the header-reading problem #316 already handles, so this PR doesn't touch headers.

Double-encoded query

ALB doesn't decode query parameters (AWS docs: "If the query parameters are URL-encoded, the load balancer does not decode them"). stringifyQuery then encoded them again, so ?q=a%20b turned into ?q=a%2520b.

For events with requestContext.elb, keys and values are now joined as they arrive, in single-value and multi-value mode:

  • Valueless and empty-named params keep the same ?foo / ?= rules as v1 events.
  • A raw # is escaped to %23 so it can't start a fragment and cut the query short.

API Gateway v1 events still go through URLSearchParams as before.

request.ip

ALB events don't have requestContext.identity.sourceIp, so request.ip was always undefined. In its default append mode, ALB adds the address of the client it accepted the connection from as the last X-Forwarded-For entry (docs). That entry is now used as the peer, like sourceIp is for API Gateway, and the rest of the header becomes the forwarded chain:

  • Without trustProxy, request.ip is the address ALB saw. Client-supplied entries to the left of it are ignored.
  • With trustProxy, the chain is walked right-to-left from that peer, as for the other events. The URL host/proto hop count uses the same peer.
  • No X-Forwarded-For (for example remove mode) means request.ip stays undefined, same as before.
  • With client port preservation (routing.http.xff_client_port.enabled), ALB appends ip:port or [ipv6]:port. The port and brackets are dropped from that peer entry. A bare IPv6 address stays intact.

This assumes append mode, the ALB default. In preserve mode, ALB passes X-Forwarded-For through unchanged, so the last entry is whatever the client sent, and nothing in the Lambda event tells the two modes apart. Deployments that use preserve shouldn't rely on request.ip from this adapter.

Tests

There's a new ALB request block in test/aws.test.ts, with 10 tests:

  • single-value and multi-value query encoding
  • the # escape
  • valueless and empty-named params
  • request.ip with and without trustProxy
  • the client port appended with port preservation (IPv4, bracketed IPv6, and with trustProxy), and a bare IPv6 peer
  • no X-Forwarded-For
  • an API Gateway v1 event is still encoded

5 of them fail on main. oxlint, oxfmt --check and tsc are clean, and test/aws.test.ts passes 139/139. The rest of the suite has the same failures on main locally: deno.test.ts (no Deno installed) and log.test.ts (color/locale environment).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved client IP detection for requests routed through Application Load Balancers, including trusted proxy chains and IPv4/IPv6 ports.
    • Preserved ALB query-string formatting, including percent encoding, multi-value parameters, empty values, and special characters.
    • Correctly handles requests without an available client IP.
    • Maintained distinct query encoding behavior for API Gateway requests.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for ALB client IP resolution and query-string handling.

…LB client IP

- ALB passes query parameters undecoded, so they are no longer encoded again (`?q=a%20b` stayed `?q=a%2520b`)
- ALB events have no `sourceIp`, so the X-Forwarded-For entry the load balancer appends is used as the peer

📝 Walkthrough

AWS request handling now detects ALB events, resolves client IPs from forwarded addresses, and preserves ALB query strings without double-encoding. Tests cover ALB query and IP behavior and confirm API Gateway v1 encoding remains unchanged.

Changes: ALB Request Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
ALB event detection and peer IP resolution
src/adapters/_aws/utils.ts
ALB detection enables client-IP resolution from the final X-Forwarded-For entry when sourceIp is absent. The logic handles trusted hops and IPv4 or IPv6 client ports.
ALB query preservation and validation
src/adapters/_aws/utils.ts, test/aws.test.ts
ALB query values remain encoded, valueless parameters remain valueless, and # is escaped. Non-ALB queries retain URL encoding. Tests cover query reconstruction and forwarded-address resolution.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b629b

ALB-fronted deployments that use the X-Forwarded-For preserve setting could let a client spoof the default request IP. Deployments using the default append mode are unaffected. Document this assumption or add a guard before relying on request.ip for security decisions.

- Around line 49-52: Update the ALB handling branch around isALBEvent and
forwardedFor so the final X-Forwarded-For entry is used as sourceIp only when an
explicit append-mode guarantee is available; otherwise leave sourceIp unset to
avoid trusting client-supplied preserve-mode values. Preserve the existing list
trimming behavior when append mode is confirmed.
- Line 51: Normalize the value assigned to sourceIp in the ALB client-port
handling path before proxy trust and IP resolution: remove IPv6 brackets and an
optional port, while preserving plain IPv6 addresses and treating an empty
result as undefined. Update the surrounding list-pop logic without changing
downstream isTrustedProxy behavior.

Require ALB append mode before trusting the final address.

When an ALB uses X-Forwarded-For preserve mode, it does not append the connection peer. A client can then supply the final entry. This branch assigns that entry to sourceIp, and the default request.ip becomes spoofable even without trustProxy. Require an explicit append-mode deployment guarantee, or leave the peer IP unset when that guarantee is unavailable. AWS documents preserve mode as a supported ALB configuration.
