feat(retrieval): corpus mode, multi-hop retrieval across a whole collection on the Judge - #90
Conversation
A collection question needs facts from several documents and nobody says which; /v1/query/multi navigated a named list one document at a time with no score that ranks across them. Corpus mode keeps every decision a closed-set judgement on the Judge, with no index and no embedding: - route: each document is a short card (title, top-level contents, opening), and the Judge scores whether it holds any part of what the question needs - read: the best documents are navigated in parallel by JudgeNavigator, worded for multipart questions so a page with one half of a comparison is not judged false - merge: the Judge's probabilities share one scale, so pages from every document rank in one list, each contributing document represented before any gives a second page - hop: the Judge checks whether the evidence states every fact needed; if not, unread documents are routed again with what was found in the state, which is the bridge step multi-hop questions need - coverage: the final completeness probability is returned, and the answer step uses it to decline POST /v1/query/corpus returns the merged evidence, route scores, the per-hop trace and coverage; POST /v1/answer/corpus writes one answer with document and page citations placed by pincite. Without document_ids the collection is every ready document in the caller's org and store. A byte-bounded cache keyed by document and update time keeps each document's leaves, pages and card across questions. JudgeWalkStrategy's input building is shared through NavInputs, so corpus mode reads PDFs (persisted contents and pages), paged documents without contents, and section trees the same way single-document navigation does.
Reviewer's GuideIntroduces Judge-only corpus mode for multi-hop questions across an entire document collection, including cached input preparation, parallel card routing and document reads, fair evidence merging, coverage-driven bridge hops, and new query/answer endpoints with citations. 135-151: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winThe cache size is wrong for section-tree documents, so the byte bound does not limit them.
On the section-tree path,
in.Pagesis nil.sizethen counts only the card, but the entry holds a closure that keeps the wholetree.Treealive. A large collection with no persisted pages can therefore hold many trees while staying under the 512 MiB bound. Add an estimate of the tree size, for examplet.TotalTokens()*4.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

take the smaller of each requested value and its corresponding server cap,
reusing the existing cap constants. Preserve the current behavior for
nonpositive values.
- Around line 139-142: Update the GetDocument error handling in the errgroup
callback to skip only recognized not-found errors and documents with a non-ready
status; return all other catalog errors, including cancellation and database
failures, so the errgroup propagates them.

to propagate load failures instead of silently continuing with the section-tree
fallback, preventing fallback results from being cached as successful builds.
Keep the existing page assignment when loading succeeds.

judgewalk navigated only sections with a page range, so a Markdown, text or HTML document gave it nothing: /v1/query returned no evidence for it, and the MultiHop smoke's 609 articles each answered "no navigable sections" in corpus mode. Such a document is now navigated by its content sections in document order, one numbered unit each; citations then name sections and no page is invented. Corpus evidence marks those units as ordinal. Empty evidence, document and hop lists encode as [], not null, which the SDK rejected.
… null 17 of the MultiHop smoke's 20 questions failed in the SDK on hops[n].read = null: a hop whose routing found nothing unread worth reading recorded a nil list. A test now checks the whole corpus response encodes no null.
…not absences - max_pages_per_document and max_evidence are capped (16, 64): the merged evidence goes into one answer prompt - a catalog error while resolving named documents fails the request; only db.ErrNotFound means a document is outside the caller's scope - only storage.ErrNotFound (or ErrNoPages) means a document has no pages; any other storage failure is reported against the document instead of reading a paged document through its weaker section tree
Corpus mode: one question over a whole collection, with every decision a closed-set judgement on the Judge. No index, no embedding, no BM25.
Why
A collection question (MultiHop-RAG: facts in 2–4 of 609 articles, nobody says which) had no path.
