feat(corpus): the measured coverage question, abstention, card size per request - #91
Conversation
…size per request HAL-3097: on 25 answerable and 25 null MultiHop questions over the same evidence, the strict "states every fact" coverage separated them (AUC 0.965) but sat at 0.03-0.5 on answerable ones, so the 0.5 stop sent every question over the bridge and none was declined. The "could a careful reader give a definite answer" wording separates as well (AUC 0.968), with means 0.412 against 0.044, and at 0.06 kept 24/25 and declined 23/25. - coverage asks that question; Result.Answerable is coverage >= 0.06 - /v1/query/corpus and /v1/answer/corpus abstain when the collection does not answer (no evidence, abstained: true), as /v1/query does; abstain: false keeps the evidence - card_chars (200-900) shortens routing cards per request, so the pilot can measure routing cost against hits
Reviewer's GuideThe PR replaces the corpus coverage wording with a measured answerability classifier at a 0.06 threshold, adds default abstention controls to corpus endpoints, and introduces bounded per-request routing-card sizing while retaining multi-hop coverage behavior. CorpusHop.Coveragedoc and a mixed-purpose coverage value.
res.Answerableis computed from the finalres.Coverage. TheCoverageThresholddefault of 0.5 still controls when hops stop. TheCorpusHop.Coveragecomment (Lines 86-88) still says the Judge estimates that evidence "holds every fact the question needs". The judgment now asks whether the passages support a definite answer. Update that comment so the documented meaning matches the newanswerablequestion. If the
answerableprobability is missing, coveragereturns 0 andAnswerablebecomes false. With the defaultabstain: true, a Judge response without that key makes every question abstain with no error. Consider logging or surfacing this case.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

The coverage question corpus mode asks, chosen by measurement, plus abstention and a per-request card size (HAL-3097).
The measurement
25 answerable and 25 null MultiHop questions (rng seed 7), first-hop corpus evidence for each, and four coverage questions asked of Jev over the same evidence:
The old wording separated the groups; the 0.5 threshold was the failure. Answerable questions scored 0.03–0.5, so every question took the bridge hop and none was declined.
Change
Result.Answerableis coverage ≥ 0.06./v1/query/corpusand/v1/answer/corpusabstain by default when the collection does not answer (no evidence, abstained: true,abstain_reason), as/v1/querydoes.abstain: falsekeeps the evidence, and the answer step is then told the evidence is weak.card_chars(200–900) shortens routing cards per request. Routing is most of a corpus question's cost, so the pilot can measure it against hits. The 0.06 threshold was fitted on these 50 questions; the pilot's MultiHop sample (seed 0) is the held-out test, tracked on HAL-3097.
Verification
