The model wrote <<65,398 / <<(50,710 + 47,528) / 2>>>> for Lockheed Martin's FY2020 ratio (FinanceBench 04412). The non-greedy <<(.+?)>> match took "65,398 / <<(50,710 + 47,528) / 2" as one expression, failed on the inner <<, and the answer read "could not be computed". Resolve now scans with a stack. The innermost set-up is evaluated first and its value goes into the outer one at full precision. Every level is recorded. A failed inner set-up makes the outer one fail. A << with no >>, or a >> with no <<, is not computable and never yields a partial number.
Reviewer's GuideThe PR changes calculation setup resolution from regex-based matching to stack-based, inside-out evaluation, allowing nested expressions to compute correctly while preserving full-precision substitution, recording every level, propagating failures, and rejecting unbalanced markers. New tests cover the reported benchmark case and the key success, failure, balancing, and precision scenarios. Sequence diagram for nested calculation resolutionsequenceDiagram

- Around line 104-105: Track provenance for each substituted operand instance as
Resolve inserts nested results, and carry that metadata through tokenization
into evaluate and Trace so derived operands are omitted or recognized as derived
rather than treated as model-supplied. Do not identify operands by matching
text; preserve a literal operand even when its value matches a substituted
result.
- Around line 141-148: Update plain to format floats with precision -1 so nested
results round-trip accurately, and remove the unconditional trailing-zero
trimming so integer values such as 100 remain unchanged. Preserve the special
case that returns 0 for negative zero.

A calculation set up inside another one is now worked out inside-out. It used to be reported as "could not be computed".
Measured
In the 2.5 Flash-Lite pilot, FinanceBench
financebench_id_04412(Lockheed Martin) was answered as65,398 / <<(50,710 + 47,528) / 2 (could not be computed) >>, and Jev graded it as declined. The model had nested one set-up in another; the non-greedy match took the outer text as one expression and failed on the inner<<.Change
resolve/Resolveevaluates the innermost set-up first. Its value goes into the outer expression at full precision (no exponent, no grouping).<<with no>>, or a>>with no<<, is not computable and never yields a partial number.04412's set-up now resolves to
1.3314 (= 65,398 / 49119); the gold answer is 1.33.Verification
New tests cover the 04412 case, two levels with siblings, a failing inner set-up, both unbalanced cases, and inner precision.
Closes HAL-3245
The bench copy of the calculator gets the same fix in its own PR.
