The calculator now handles powers, so compound growth rates (CAGR) and roots can be computed.

Measured

In the held-out prompt test (100 FinanceBench questions outside the pilot sample), ...03718 was set up as ((65984 / 65398) ** (1/2) - 1) * 100, a two-year CAGR. The calculator accepted only + - * /, so it answered "could not be computed", and Jev graded that as declined. FinanceBench asks for multi-year growth often.

Change

  • Powers. ** and ^ are powers, right-associative (2 ** 3 ** 2 is 512). A power binds before a sign on its left (-2 ** 2 is -4), as Python and spreadsheets read it. Fractional exponents give roots.
  • Refused, not computed:
    • an exponent beyond 100;
    • a fractional power of a negative number;
    • zero to a negative power;
    • any result that overflows.
  • Engine only: calc.Instructions shows the answer model a CAGR set-up. The bench's shared prompt text is left unchanged, so excerpts-calc-v3 keeps meaning one prompt; the model already writes ** unprompted.

03718's set-up now evaluates to 0.447.

Verification

  • Bench: 177 tests pass on vlb-w2.
  • Engine: Lorx CI.
  • New tests cover CAGR (with both ** and ^), a square root, right-associativity, a sign before a power, a sign in an exponent, and each refusal.

Closes HAL-3274

Summary by Sourcery

Extend the calculator to evaluate powers and roots while safely refusing unsupported or non-finite calculations.

New Features:

  • Add support for exponentiation and roots using both ** and ^, enabling compound growth calculations such as CAGR.

Bug Fixes:

  • Reject invalid or unsafe power calculations, including excessive exponents, non-real fractional powers, zero raised to negative powers, and non-finite results.

Enhancements:

  • Define power precedence and associativity consistently for nested expressions and signed operands.

Tests:

  • Add coverage for CAGR, roots, power syntax and precedence, signed exponents, associativity, and all supported refusal cases.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Calculator expressions support exponentiation using ** or ^, including negative exponents and compound expressions.
    • Powers follow standard precedence and associate from right to left.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid or out-of-range powers, including fractional powers of negative numbers and negative powers of zero, are rejected.
    • Calculations now reject non-finite results from powers and basic arithmetic.
  • Documentation
    • Instructions now describe power syntax and include a compound-growth example.

FinanceBench asks for CAGRs and multi-year growth, which need a power:
((end / start) ** (1 / years) - 1). The calculator took only + - * /, so
those set-ups answered "could not be computed".

** and ^ are now powers in the grammar: power := atom [^ unary],
right-associative, binding before a sign on the left. Refused: an exponent
beyond 100, a fractional power of a negative number, zero to a negative
power, any non-finite result. calc.Instructions shows the model a CAGR
set-up.

Reviewer's Guide

The calculator now parses and evaluates bounded, finite powers using ** or ^, including right-associative fractional exponents for CAGR and roots, with explicit invalid-case handling. Prompt instructions and tests were updated to exercise the new syntax, precedence, and refusal rules.

📝 Walkthrough

The calculator now supports power expressions written with ** or ^. Powers are right-associative and bind more tightly than a leading sign. The parser rejects specified invalid powers and non-finite arithmetic results. Tests cover valid and invalid expressions.

Changes: Calculator power expressions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Power operator notation
pkg/calc/calc.go
The package documentation and instructions describe power operators, and the instructions add a compound-growth example. The tokenizer accepts ** and ^.
Power parsing and evaluation
pkg/calc/calc.go, pkg/calc/calc_test.go
The parser evaluates powers as right-associative and before a leading sign. It rejects exponents with absolute values above 100, fractional powers of negative bases, negative powers of zero, and non-finite results. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division now fail on non-finite intermediate results. Tests cover power expressions and Resolve operand handling.
