feat(web): extra requests: monthly blocks, one-time blocks and overage (web 0.46.0) - #555
Pro is a single tier of 100,000 requests per 30 days, and a team pool is seats x 100,000. An account that outgrows that mid-period has no way to buy more: its webhooks are turned away with 429 until the period resets. This adds three ways for Pro accounts and subscribed team pools to go past the plan, all in blocks of 25,000 requests.
Option
Price
How it works
Monthly blocks
$2 per 25,000 a month
Raise the allowance every period and renew together with the plan
One-time blocks
$3 per 25,000
Bought once, never expire, used only after the allowance and monthly blocks
Overage
$4 per 25,000 ($0.16 per 1,000)
Metered past everything else, up to a monthly maximum the customer sets, billed at the end of the period
What changes
Capture (migration 00065)
A capture spends the allowance (request_limit + block_requests, still one conditional update), then one-time blocks, then overage, then answers 429 (take_extra_request()). Accounts without add-ons run no extra queries, even when rejected.
requests_used counts the allowance only, so blocks bought later are never eaten by credits or overage spent before them.
check_email_recipient(), the period resets, the quota-exhausted email and the profile broadcast trigger change with it. check_and_decrement_quota() includes monthly blocks.
New service-role tables capacity_subscriptions (add-on subscriptions mirrored from Polar) and capacity_purchases (each one-time order recorded once, which makes the webhook safe to repeat), and the RPCs the webhook and the overage reporter call.
Polar
Add-ons are their own subscriptions and orders on the plan's customer: a unit-priced monthly product, a unit-priced one-time product, a one-time product for monthly blocks added mid-period, and a subscription with only a metered price.
The webhook routes these products before the Pro and team handlers, which would otherwise read their events as the plan's. Pro's cancel, uncancel, revoke and active handlers now also check the subscription id.
An add-on's renewal is moved onto the plan's (current_billing_period_end), only ever earlier, so they renew and bill together and a renewal race cannot hand out a free period.
Adding monthly blocks mid-period charges the full monthly price for them at once (a checkout for the one-time product; off-session charges need Polar support to enable) and grants them at once; the subscription's count then rises from the renewal (next_period). Removing blocks waits for the renewal. The row keeps the count Polar renews at, because Polar's own count stays below the granted one until then.
Add-ons are reconciled with the plan after every plan event: they end with a plan that is set to end, come back if it is kept, and end when it is gone (paid-up monthly blocks that were going to renew are kept as one-time blocks). A second subscription of a kind (a checkout completed twice) is ended; paid blocks from it become one-time blocks.
Overage counts land on the account row; lib/billing/overage-reporter.ts sends them to the meter every 30 seconds as events whose external id is the counted range, so a resend is dropped as a duplicate.
Account and team deletion end the add-ons first, because their rows cascade away.
Dashboard and API
An Extra requests panel on the plan page and the team page (the owner changes it, members see it), with a slider to 500,000 requests and a field for a typed amount (rounded up to whole blocks, up to 10,000,000).
/api/usage: limit includes monthly blocks, remaining is what will still be accepted this period, plus blockRequests, creditRequests and overage. A team's requestLimit includes its monthly blocks, so the CLI, SDK and MCP count them already. OpenAPI and docs updated.
New dependency: @radix-ui/react-slider (the shadcn Slider primitive).
AGENTS.md records the design and its reasons.
Before deploying
In Polar production: create the meter (event name request.overage, sum of the requests property), the four private products with the prices above (overage as a metered unit price of 0.016 cents), turn on multiple subscriptions per customer for the organisation, and check that the webhook endpoint subscribes to order.paid, order.refunded and the subscription.* events.
Add POLAR_REQUEST_BLOCKS_PRODUCT_ID, POLAR_MONTHLY_BLOCKS_PRODUCT_ID, POLAR_MONTHLY_BLOCKS_ADD_PRODUCT_ID and POLAR_OVERAGE_PRODUCT_ID to the web env. The panel and the reporter stay off until all four are set.
Apply 00065_request_capacity.sql to production (function signatures are unchanged, so it can go first), then NOTIFY pgrst, 'reload schema'.
Checks
pnpm typecheck, pnpm lint, pnpm format:check and pnpm test (SDK, MCP and web unit suites) pass, and so does pnpm build.
The full web integration suite passes (553 tests), including a new supabase-capacity suite for the capture order, the email check, the RPCs' idempotency and ordering rules, and the report claims.
The Playwright settings and teams specs pass (30 tests).
End to end against the Polar sandbox, with its webhooks tunnelled to a local build: Pro checkout; one-time blocks; monthly blocks bought, raised mid-period, reduced, kept and ended; overage on, counted through the receiver, reported to the meter and off; a double checkout; the plan cancelled, kept and revoked; the same for a team. The sandbox invoiced metered overage and renewed blocks at their scheduled count at the period end.
Two independent reviews; concurrency probes (800 parallel captures at the edges, racing purchases) found nothing negative, over a maximum, or granted twice.
Known edges left: a refund that reaches us before its payment is processed is dropped, overage counted in the last 30 seconds before an account is deleted is never billed, and alignment trusts the plan's stored period end.
…e (web 0.46.0)
Pro accounts and subscribed team pools can go past the plan's requests in
blocks of 25,000: monthly blocks ($2, renewed with the plan), one-time
blocks ($3, kept until used) and metered overage ($4 per 25,000, billed at
the end of the period up to a maximum the customer sets). A capture spends
the allowance (plan plus monthly blocks), then one-time blocks, then
overage, before it answers 429.
- Migration 00065: account columns on users and teams, capacity_subscriptions
and capacity_purchases, take_extra_request() and has_extra_request(), the
RPCs the Polar webhook calls, overage report claims, and capture_webhook(),
check_email_recipient(), period resets and quota emails updated together.
- Add-ons are their own Polar subscriptions and orders on the plan's
customer. The webhook routes them by product before the plan handlers,
moves their renewal onto the plan's (only ever earlier), and reconciles
them with the plan after every plan event, so they end with it. Adding
monthly blocks mid-period is a one-time order at the full monthly price,
then a next_period unit change; the row keeps the count Polar renews at.
- The web app reports counted overage to the Polar meter as events named by
the counted range, so a resend is dropped as a duplicate.
- Extra requests panel on the plan and team pages, with a slider to 500,000
requests and a typed amount; usage API, OpenAPI, docs and quota banner.
- Account and team deletion end the add-ons first.

Adds capacity columns, subscription and purchase tables, and database functions for quota spending, billing periods, purchases, refunds, and overage report leases. Shared quota logic includes recurring blocks, credits, and period-adjusted overage. Usage and team data include the added capacity fields.
Adds Polar add-on checkout and subscription handling, webhook routing, plan reconciliation, and add-on revocation before account or team deletion. Subscription updates can be filtered by subscription ID. The changes also add capacity product configuration and billing audit actions.
Overage meter reporting apps/web/lib/billing/overage-reporter.ts, apps/web/instrumentation.ts, apps/web/lib/billing/overage-reporter.test.ts
Adds a poller that claims overage ranges, submits Polar meter events, and completes accepted or permanently rejected ranges. The Node.js runtime starts the poller when capacity product IDs are configured.
Adds authenticated capacity endpoints and settings panels for monthly blocks, one-time purchases, and overage. Account and team quota displays include monthly blocks. Usage documentation and examples describe the expanded capacity fields and calculations.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 11f20
Overage billing can silently be dropped if the Polar token is rotated or loses scope, because the reporter marks those ranges as reported. Separately, a transient failure while converting duplicate or ended monthly blocks into one-time blocks can leave a customer without blocks they paid for. Both are small fixes and should be made before merge.

- settleDuplicate and the plan-gone path grant the paid blocks as one-time
blocks before revoking the subscription. Revoked first, a failed grant was
never retried: the redelivery reads the subscription as ended.
- The overage reporter sets a range aside only for 404 and 422, refusals of
the event itself. 401, 403, 408 and 409 (a rotated token, say) stay
retryable instead of dropping billable overage.
