v0.2.41.0 fix: Cycle 0052 pt2: a test replay's moves, notices and summary page - #126
Cycle 0052 pt2, the second of three pull requests of bug-fix Cycle 0052 (#124, O1): a test replay's moves, notices and summary page. Release 0.2.41.0.
Summary
Moves show no stop you moved away from (task 1).
The recorded-source slot draws no CodeLens (owner decision O8): the editor redraws a provider's lens only after its own refresh delay, so any lens named the stop a move left for 2 to 9 frames. The end-of-line label and its hover carry the whole label; escapeCodiconSyntax goes with its only caller.
A move from a stop to an output or the result reveals the slot at line 1 before the placeholder's bytes arrive (announceNodeSourceSlotText), so Cursor no longer draws the stop's sticky-scroll header over the placeholder (found by N52 (b) on 75dec02f, fixed in f0c11ead).
Notices and failure wording.
Task 11: the one-replay-at-a-time notice is raced against the entry's cancellation, so an unanswered notice never holds the next Open replay's turn; a later answer still closes nothing.
Task 17: a move failure is worded by its cause. ReplayDebugger.awaitSession wraps a start failure in ReplayDebuggerStartError, which keeps the restart clause; any other failure reads The recorded moment could not be shown: <cause>. The last moment is still shown. Select this stop again to retry.
Task 56 (local CodeRabbit round 5): the line says "The last moment is still shown." only when the return to that moment succeeded. returnToCommittedNodeMoment reports returned, superseded or not-shown; an overtaken return reports nothing (DS-F), and a failed return is told on the recorded-source row.
Private paths.
Tasks 21 and 48: a refused test replay control's cause shows <storage> on the transport's status line and in the Study pane's line.
Task 52: that line is stored sanitized, so a publish after a runtime release keeps it clean.
Task 54: privateRoots() gives every cause the reader words the attached service's roots, the released service's after a release (the reader keeps serving its stores), or the reader's own before any service. It replaces 11 { storage: [] } / home-only fallbacks.
Summary page (Reader DOM).
Task 19: the sequence renderer writes each arrow's and label's data-step as it draws.
Task 20: clamped texts collapse on each open of a test replay (keyed by the open token) and keep their state across moves.
Tests and docs. Task 50: host tests for three untested slot state cells. The README and CHANGELOG cover every user-visible change.
Test Coverage
Step 7 (on 8a50e907): 16 paths, 94 % value-weighted (94 % including weakly covered paths); 1 gap rejected as low value (a rethrow-only notice failure).
Tests: 6,779 → 6,786 (+7 new): the coverage audit's abandoned-start case (replayDebugger.test.ts), two slot state cells (task 50), three release-redaction cases (tasks 52, 54), the failed-return wording (task 56).
Test value: 7 tests written, 0 rejected by the authoring gate, 0 existing tests extended, 0 paths weakly covered.
Regression proof: task 52's test fails at f07e44cc and passes after ec479ab8; task 54's two tests fail at ec479ab8 and pass after afdf3fac; task 56's test fails at dba70b06 and passes after 50408677; task 50's tests fail under two mutations (placeholder revealed at line 2; a label drawn for a slot without a stop).
Tests ran: tests count unavailable (receipt tests_ran: unknown; the runner's own summary on the final tree is in the Test plan).
Changed tests, each with its reason (rule 6 of #124):
Removed: the slot's CodeLens tests (F207 whole label, F367 codicon escaping, F373 refresh announcement). The lens is gone (O8). A new test asserts that no lens exists at a stop or during a pending move, and the fake registry's dispose test stays.
Restated: F204's reveal assertion goes from [0] to { last: 0, elsewhere: [] }. The task 1 fix adds a second line-1 reveal before the placeholder's bytes; every reveal must still be line 1.
Restated: three move-failure expectations in studyWorkspaceTestReplaySource.test.ts reject with a plain Error, which task 17 now words as The recorded moment could not be shown: …. One of them, F368's (its return to the committed moment is made to throw), no longer expects The last moment is still shown. (task 56): that claim was the defect. Its protection, that the presentation's own cause is reported, is unchanged. The start-failure test in studyWorkspaceTestReplayComposition.test.ts now rejects with ReplayDebuggerStartError, as the real owner does.
Pre-Landing Review
Pre-Landing Review: 3 fixing cycles, converged:false (ship review limit; owner rule of 2026-10-23, O12). Every finding of the last round is fixed. No Critical or Major finding stays open, so no Issue is filed.
Cycle 1 (Step 9, specialists testing / maintainability / security / performance / simplification / state machines + Red Team): 3 untested slot state cells, fixed with tests in f07e44cc (task 50). Four Red Team and state-machine suspicions closed by evidence (task 51). One simplification advisory kept (O10).
Cycle 2 (Step 11 Claude adversarial): a refused control's line after a runtime release showed the storage path, fixed in ec479ab8 (task 52). Six suspicions closed by evidence (task 53).
Cycle 3 (Step 11 Claude adversarial pass 2 + Step 9 delta review): all causes the reader words after a release lacked roots, fixed in afdf3fac (task 54). Stale comments and a test gap fixed there too. Six suspicions closed by evidence (task 55).
Gate edits: 16 listed, 12 read, 0 findings. The two RH-1 hunks (CodeLens test removals) are justified by O8's lens removal in the same diff.
Outside review: Codex adversarial (gpt-6-astra) completed, VERDICT clean. Codex structured review ran twice and named no defect, but printed no severity tags, so the gate reads it as unverified. That is missing coverage, not a pass.
Local CodeRabbit CLI (no round limit): round 4's minor finding (a README sentence) is fixed in bd938d35; round 5's Major + Minor finding (task 56) is fixed in 50408677; round 6 on the final head (50408677) raised one Minor finding, a repeat of task 49 closed again by its evidence. OCR delegate: 5 of 5 delta files reviewed, 0 findings.
Exploratory QA
Functional smoke through the repository's Node host-test harness on the current build (.gstack/qa-reports/c52-pt2-ship-20261025-185618, private):
task 17 wording: pass;
task 11 notice race, with the Close/Return retirements: pass (4 of 4);
task 1 no lens and line-1 placeholder: pass (4 of 4), revalidated after the review's test change;
tasks 21/48 <storage>: pass (2 of 2);
the debugger start seam: pass (98 of 98).
Native behavior is N52 (b) below, not this smoke.
Design Review
No design-lite pass: the Study webview change is behavioral (step ids, Show more state), covered by Reader DOM cases red on d4ecc320. Native frames: N52 (b).
Eval Results
No prompt-related files changed — evals skipped.
Scope Drift
Scope Check: CLEAN. pt2 tasks 1, 11, 17, 19, 20, 21, plus the tasks found in this PR (48 to 56).
Plan Completion
Plan: Issue #124, pt2 scope per O1. 9 items, 8 done. 1 (task 1's native proof) verified by the driving agent against the recorded take hashes (O9). Tasks 48, 50, 52, 54 and 56 were fixed in this PR; 49, 51, 53 and 55 were closed by evidence.
Execution-only items (the 15-check exact-tree gate, required CI, hosted CodeRabbit approval): run on this PR's head before the merge; results are added here.
TODOS
No TODO items completed in this PR. The repo keeps no TODOS.md (AGENTS.md).
Documentation
Status: updated. Second and last audit of this ship, edit mode, base d4ecc32, head bd938d3. One factual edit, no blockers.
Scope: committed, staged and unstaged content (the working tree had no pending changes at the start). Every bullet of CHANGELOG 0.2.41.0 was checked against extension/README.md's Test replays paragraphs. The README.md delivered-version line was rechecked against VERSION.
Documentation health:
README.md: Current (delivered-version line reads 0.2.41.0)
extension/README.md: Updated (the transport status line paragraph now says a refused or failed move's cause shows <storage> on that line and in the Study pane's line, also after the runtime is released; the remaining six bullets were already covered)
CHANGELOG.md: Current (not edited)
AGENTS.md, PRODUCT_GOAL.md: Not edited by rule
extension/skills/codebook/SKILL.md: Not touched, since the bundled skill is unchanged
Documentation coverage: every user-visible behavior named in CHANGELOG 0.2.41.0 now has a sentence in extension/README.md. No diagram drift found. Debt: none reported.
Native round N52 (b), both hosts
Candidate f0c11ead (VSIX SHA-256 1976136d…, installed dist/extension.jsc95888d4…), Space local:codebook-qa, nextjs-dashboard at 1936e41, OBS Window Capture at 30 fps after a passing preflight per host. Originals are private; hashes in #124.
Cursor, take 2 (380d57ee…): no frame shows a CodeLens; the placeholder never shows under the stop's sticky-scroll header (checked at each stop → output transition, Home and Play). PASS.
VS Code 1.142.0, take 1 (e2166ac6…, a different replay with 3 stops): same checks. PASS.
The code after f0c11ead is tasks 48, 50, 52, 54 and 56. They change how causes are sanitized, which tests exist, and the failure line of a move whose presentation fails (task 56). They do not change the slot, the reveal, the CodeLens or a successful move, which is what (b) checks, so (b) carries over on that ground.
Delivery
converged:false at the ship review limit (above). Merge only after: required CI on the exact head, the 15-check exact-tree gate on the final tree, and hosted CodeRabbit APPROVED on the exact head (/coderabbit-resolver).
Pre-gate Stage 1: PASS (6 checks; secrets: 1 LOW, a fictional /Users/ada/… JSDoc example path); rerun on the final head before the push.
Documentation: two /ship audits ran (the section above is the second). Task 56 then added one README and one CHANGELOG sentence for its own fix; a third audit is not allowed, so those two sentences rely on local CodeRabbit round 6 and hosted CodeRabbit (the .coderabbit.yaml CHANGELOG → README rule) (O13).
Merge conditions on 9d85bebc
Hosted CodeRabbit: the review of 50408677 requested changes (1 Minor, replayDebugger.ts:779, the expiry wording of task 49). Answered with code evidence (an explicit stop selection replaces the unavailable owner), plus the JSDoc fix 9d85bebc (task 57). The thread is resolved, and the review of 9d85bebc is APPROVED.
Exact-HEAD gate: the gate on 50408677 passed 14 of 15. pnpm health refused because one unrelated configured-service test timed out inside its coverage run (task 58, pt3, the family of tasks 26, 27 and 47). The gate on 9d85bebc passed 15 of 15.
Pre-gate Stage 1: PASS on 9d85bebc.
N52 (b): 9d85bebc adds comments only, so (b) carries over as stated above.
Test plan
cd extension && pnpm test (gstack-evidence lane tests): exit 0 on the final tree 50408677 (runner: 6,786 tests, 6,780 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped)
pnpm format:check, pnpm typecheck, pnpm lint, pnpm health:static, pnpm dupes, pnpm dead-code: pass after the last code change (50408677)
Affected files after the last code change (50408677): the test replay, playback and replay debugger files, 510 of 510 pass
15-check exact-tree gate on the final head 9d85bebc: 15 of 15 exit 0 (tests lane 6,786 tests, 6,780 pass, 0 fail; package lane 1,071 tests, 1,061 pass, 0 fail; five Reader DOM checks; pnpm health exit 0)
Required CI on the exact head 9d85bebc: 25 checks finished, all pass (one main-push-only job skipping)
Hosted CodeRabbit APPROVED on the exact head 9d85bebc (/coderabbit-resolver: 0 unresolved threads; its one Minor finding answered with evidence and the JSDoc fix 9d85bebc, task 57)
… tasks 1, 11, 17, 19, 20, 21)
- Task 1 (N51-V1): the recorded-source slot draws no CodeLens. The editor
redraws a provider's lens only after its own refresh delay (at least
250 ms in VS Code), so a lens named the stop a move left beside the next
moment; the end-of-line label and its hover carry the whole label, and
the v9 replay region draws no label line above the code (owner decision
O8). The unused escapeCodiconSyntax goes with the lens.
- Task 11: an unanswered one-replay-at-a-time notice stops holding the
entry turn once a newer entry, a Return or a Close overtakes it.
- Task 17: a move failure is worded by its cause; only a replay debugger
start (ReplayDebuggerStartError) keeps the restart clause.
- Task 19: the renderer names each arrow and label of a test replay's
drawing by its step; no marker pairs them by order.
- Task 20: every open of a test replay starts with its clamped texts
collapsed; moves inside it keep an expanded text.
- Task 21: the published refusal of a test replay control is sanitized.
Every new test or Reader DOM case fails on d4ecc32 and passes here.
Changed tests: the lens tests of F207, F373, F367 and F387 are replaced
or removed with the lens; the move-failure tests that rejected with a
plain Error now read the new sentence, and the start-failure test rejects
with ReplayDebuggerStartError.
…e placeholder arrives (Cycle 0052 task 1, sticky-scroll part)
N52 (b) in Cursor on 75dec02: after a move from a stop to an output the
placeholder showed under the stop's source's sticky-scroll header for 11
frames, until the commit's reveal scrolled the slot to its top. The slot's
editors now scroll to the first line in the same host turn as the provider
event that serves the placeholder. Host test red without the fix (no reveal
while the bytes travel). The F204 test now asserts that every reveal of the
placeholder is its first line, as it may be revealed twice.
Also: the Reader DOM case that patches Element.prototype.append restores it
in a finally block (local CodeRabbit round 1).
… private roots (Cycle 0052 task 48; local CodeRabbit round 2)
Task 21 sanitized only the transport's copy (nodeHistoryRefusal); the
errors list still showed String(error) with the learner's storage path.
That line now loses the roots and keeps its error name. Host test red
without the fix.
Round 2's other finding (do not wrap the startup bound's closed-debugger
error as a start failure) is closed by evidence as task 49: the bound's
expiry is the replay debugger failing to start, which task 17 words with
the restart clause, and the next selection restarts the unavailable owner.
Two host tests for the recorded-source slot's untested state cells
(placeholder kept through a move between outputs; the loading text
replaced by the placeholder from line 1 after a failed show), from the
/ship review's state-machines specialist (Cycle 0052 pt2, #124).
A refused test replay control's line is stored with the private roots
replaced, while the service still names them, so a publish after a
runtime release never shows the learner's storage path (Cycle 0052 pt2
/ship Step 11, Claude adversarial; host test red on f07e44c). The
publish-time helper goes; report()'s doc says which kind is stored
sanitized.
The reader words every cause with the attached service's private roots,
after a runtime release with the released service's, and before any
service with the roots it holds itself (privateRoots), so a test replay
control refused or a failure worded after the release no longer shows
the storage folder, workspace or home directory (Cycle 0052 pt2 /ship
Step 11 Claude adversarial pass 2 and the Step 9 delta review; host
tests red on ec479ab).
…rt failure
Step 7 coverage audit of Cycle 0052 pt2: a presentation abandoned while
the editor still starts the historical session rejects with its own
reason, not ReplayDebuggerStartError (task 17's seam). Refs #124
Causes shown after a runtime release keep the storage, workspace and
home folders replaced; the diagram marks a step on its own arrow and
label; the delivered-version line names 0.2.41.0 after pt2. Refs #124
…thout a sticky-scroll header
Local CodeRabbit round 4 on ca4568d (minor): CHANGELOG 0.2.41.0 names
it, so the packaged README carries its sentence. Refs #124
…in the Study pane's line too
Second /ship documentation audit of Cycle 0052 pt2: completes CHANGELOG
0.2.41.0's fourth bullet in the packaged README. Refs #124
…ly when it is
returnToCommittedNodeMoment reports whether the slot shows the
committed moment again, was overtaken, or could not show it; the move's
failure line keeps 'The last moment is still shown.' only after a
return, an overtaken return reports nothing (DS-F), and the
recorded-source row tells a failed return. Local CodeRabbit round 5 on
dba70b0 (Major + Minor); host test red on dba70b0. F368's expectation
is restated: its return throws, so the line claims no shown moment.
README and CHANGELOG say so. Refs #124

A narrow replay-expiry path may provide an inaccurate recovery message, but users can still retry by selecting the stop again.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 9d85b
The inspected changes preserve debugger ownership and cancellation controls while improving private-path handling and recovery reporting. No introduced security weakness was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns unexercised lifecycle races and the limited scope of the available security coverage.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected exposure is the editor window's replay reader, displayed diagnostics, and owned historical debug session. Recorded metadata and failure text continue through existing presentation paths; the changed entrypoints do not add a debugger command path or broader session authority in the inspected callers.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Debugger session binding remains constrained by the per-owner token and descriptor checks. Presentation revisions and workspace request tokens reject stale work; late startup is adopted only by the same usable owner or stopped. These existing controls remain independent of the new error classification.
observed — Failure reporting continues to sanitize causes before presentation and stack frames before diagnostic logging. The sanitizer replaces known private roots and removes control and bidirectional characters; the PR expands the roots available when no service is attached rather than weakening that control.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Individual caller cancellation abandons a wait without cancelling shared startup. Existing expiry and disposal paths still detach or close the owner and contain late sessions. The changed error wrapper therefore does not transfer cleanup responsibility to a cancelled caller.

…replace an unavailable owner
An expired startup bound leaves the owner unavailable; the next explicit
replay open, or an explicit selection or Inspect of a test replay's stop,
replaces and starts it (replaceUnavailableReplayDebugger), so a move's
restart clause holds; a seek or Play never replaces it. The old JSDoc
named the replay reopen only. Hosted CodeRabbit on PR #126

Refs #124
Cycle 0052 pt2, the second of three pull requests of bug-fix Cycle 0052 (#124, O1): a test replay's moves, notices and summary page. Release 0.2.41.0.
Summary
Moves show no stop you moved away from (task 1).
escapeCodiconSyntaxgoes with its only caller.announceNodeSourceSlotText), so Cursor no longer draws the stop's sticky-scroll header over the placeholder (found by N52 (b) on75dec02f, fixed inf0c11ead).Notices and failure wording.
ReplayDebugger.awaitSessionwraps a start failure inReplayDebuggerStartError, which keeps the restart clause; any other failure readsThe recorded moment could not be shown: <cause>. The last moment is still shown. Select this stop again to retry.returnToCommittedNodeMomentreportsreturned,supersededornot-shown; an overtaken return reports nothing (DS-F), and a failed return is told on the recorded-source row.Private paths.

Test Coverage

Documentation
Status: updated. Second and last audit of this ship, edit mode, base d4ecc32, head bd938d3. One factual edit, no blockers.
Scope: committed, staged and unstaged content (the working tree had no pending changes at the start). Every bullet of CHANGELOG 0.2.41.0 was checked against extension/README.md's Test replays paragraphs. The README.md delivered-version line was rechecked against VERSION.
Documentation health:
<storage>on that line and in the Study pane's line, also after the runtime is released; the remaining six bullets were already covered)Documentation coverage: every user-visible behavior named in CHANGELOG 0.2.41.0 now has a sentence in extension/README.md. No diagram drift found. Debt: none reported.

PASS.e2166ac6…, a different replay with 3 stops): same checks. PASS.f0c11eadis tasks 48, 50, 52, 54 and 56. They change how causes are sanitized, which tests exist, and the failure line of a move whose presentation fails (task 56). They do not change the slot, the reveal, the CodeLens or a successful move, which is what (b) checks, so (b) carries over on that ground.Delivery
