v0.2.44.0 fix: Cycle 0054: an unreached declared stop explains itself, a launch re-asks a changed root claim, and the native trial keeps unreleased listings - #131
Refs #130 (Cycle 0054, bug-fix cycle). One pull request. It closes the three defects that Cycle 0053 carried (N53-F1, CR-OD1, CR-OD2), and every defect this cycle's reviews found.
Summary
N53-F1: a test that ends before a later declared stop explains itself.
OwnedNodeTestRun.advance used to answer only that the owned debug session ended. When the test exits before the next declared stop, it now names the exit and the stop: Owned Node test exited with code <n> (or signal <s>) before declared stop <N>. A declared stop is reached only when the test runs its line after the previous stop; its output is in the Codebook test output. If Vitest skipped the cited test, check that testTitles names it exactly; see codebook://help/node-test.
The explanation applies only when the test ran on and has not yet reached the next stop (reachedStopIndex, set once the declared pause matched). A refusal before the continuation keeps its own words, for example after the learner stopped the session. So does a failure while a reached stop's values are captured.
The node-test help's walkthrough and testSelection say that additional stops are reached only in the order the test runs their lines.
CR-OD1: a package-mode launch asks the root claim again.
A plan can make a root claim: not-selected, several-projects or listing-failed. For such a plan, prepareNodeTestLaunch lists the cited test once more from the opened root with the root's Vitest, right before its package listing (reaskRootClaim, utils/decideRootClaimFromListing.ts, utils/isPackageRootClaim.ts).
When the root now answers another claim, the launch is refused: node-test's plan for <test> changed while the run was preparing (the repository root's Vitest now answers rootClaim <new>, not <old>); start the test again.
Only a clean Vitest failure whose process group ended counts as listing-failed again. A listing that is cancelled, times out, cannot confirm its process group ended or cannot run refuses with its own error. The owned run forwards a failed listing release to the launch's own callback.
The launch's listings have their own budget: each listing has 30 s (unchanged), and all of them together have NODE_TEST_LISTING_PHASE_TIMEOUT_MS = 3 × (30 s + 4 × 1 s) + 5 s = 107 s. The 45 s attach budget starts after them. The listing budget is checked again after the listings return.
A listing whose run was already stopped starts no Vitest process.
Measured on laststance/nsx at 0897231: the added root listing took 247, 146 and 142 ms (median 146 ms).
CR-OD2: the native-trial bootstrap keeps its unreleased listings.
nativeNodeTestBootstrap.ts keeps the retries of root listings that could not be released for the whole trial. It runs them after planning and again at the end of the trial, after run.stop().
It always writes the private report, with error, errorCause, stopError, listingError and unreleasedListings (processGroup, directory). Each cleanup step settles on its own.
The trial rejects with the first error, in this order: planning or run, stop, unreleased listing, report write.
The report is written as a new 0600 file and renamed into place. A report holding a value JSON cannot write keeps its errors, its unreleased listings and its events.
This bootstrap is QA tooling, not the packaged chat path.
Docs. The extension/README.md node-test section and changed-plan troubleshooting row, the root README status, the CHANGELOG [0.2.44.0] entry, and the help text in resources.ts. The MCP API stays 1.8, no input or stored format changes, and the bundled skill is unchanged (1.0.47).
Changes to existing tests, each with its reason:
nodeTestVitestRootLaunch.test.ts, three tests (H1/H2 package launch, root claim basis, root config changed during the listings):
each now records the root listing at launch as its first Vitest start (2 → 3 starts);
each scripts the root's answer to match the plan;
the claim-free and root-mode tests are unchanged.
ownedNodeTestRun.test.ts harness:
exitAfterStop, endsWhileFirstStopIsRevealed, launchListingMs, listingPhaseMs and afterListingMs options;
an endSessionAsLearner helper;
a listing stand-in that honours its signal.
nativeNodeTestBootstrap.test.ts: a loadTrial helper beside the Cycle 0053 test, which is unchanged.
scripts/tests/package.test.mjs: the expected version is 0.2.44 (release metadata).
Test Coverage
Step 7, pass 1 of 2: 17 paths; 16 have a ★★ or ★★★ test, so the value-weighted figure is 94%; 0 weak paths. Gate PASS (target 80). The remaining path (the runTrial guard row) has a test, added by the parent.
Tests: 447 test files before, 447 after; all tests were added to existing files.
Test value: 4 tests written by the audit and the parent, 0 rejected by the authoring gate, 1 existing test file extended, 0 paths weakly covered.
Every test added by the tasks, the coverage audit, the three review passes, Step 11 and the last round fails with its fix removed from dist, or at 1b2dcfa7 for the bootstrap.
Base control: unavailable, because the tests run from the compiled dist.
One non-discriminating launch test for the stop-before-spawn case was replaced by a unit test that counts spawn calls through a node:child_process stand-in. The stand-in Vitest was killed before it recorded its start, so the launch test could not tell the fix apart.
Tests ran: tests count unavailable (the ledger did not parse the runner summary; Node's own summary reads 6949 tests, 6943 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped)

The binding reviews of a50620c1 produced the last round, and every finding of it is fixed in d8a9f0ac:
a stop during the root listing's release spawned the package listing (Codex);
the report was overwritten in place and then had its mode changed (Codex and Claude): it is now a new 0600 file renamed into place;
values without a string form (Claude and red team);
a report that could not be serialized was lost (Claude);
95 s was shorter than three listings plus their releases (Claude);
a stale constants doc (maintainability);
Windows portability of two tests (Codex structured).
No Critical or Major defect is left open, so none is recorded in an Issue.
Step 11.5: the reviewed tree is a50620c1's (55e3cff3), and the final tree is d8a9f0ac plus docs and release metadata. The binding is therefore a mismatch, as the ship limit allows.
RH-1 extension/src/tests/nativeNodeTestBootstrap.test.ts: Windows-only context.skip in the new report-mode and link tests. Windows has no POSIX owner, group and other mode bits, and needs a privilege for symbolic links. The tests run on macOS and Linux. Codex structured review W1 asked for this.
local CodeRabbit CLI on 1b2dcfa7..558562d4: 13 files, 0 findings;
OCR delegate: 8 of 8 reviewable files, 0 findings;
5 files excluded by OCR's defaults (the README as an unsupported extension, 4 tests under the default path rule).
Exploratory QA
These are functional smoke probes through the built dist, run on the pinned laststance/nsx clone (0897231, Vitest 5.0.5). This is development evidence and earns no final-row credit.
Capture 001 (success). The plan decides not-selected. The launch lists from the root with the declared path, then from browser-extension, and launches there. PASS.
Capture 002 (riskiest edge). A run stopped while the real root Vitest listing runs is refused with the stop's own reason. One request was made and no package listing ran; no process or listing folder was left. PASS.
Revalidation after each fixing pass. Captures 003–004, 005–006 and 007–008 repeat 001 and 002 on current inputs. All PASS.
Not probed. The changed-claim refusal on a real Vitest: nsx defines its projects inline, so a change shows first as a root-config basis change. Unit tests cover the refusal.
Design Review
No frontend files changed — design review skipped.
Eval Results
No eval suite in this repository. The help sentences are pinned by nodeTestHelp unit tests (a named gap: no LLM eval of the help text).
1 CHANGED: the bootstrap's outermost finally is done as runTrial then endTrial.
1 PARTIAL: AC 7. The CHANGELOG half is done at release, and the extension/README.md sentences are present.
1 done at release: the CHANGELOG.
8 execution items, resolved as follows.
Run by the parent: the red proofs, the nsx measurement and the local CodeRabbit review.
Covered by an existing test: the selected-once case whose root now selects the test twice (a Vitest selection that cannot run the cited file exactly once is refused before launch).
Pending outside /ship:
N54 native in both hosts;
the 15-check exact-HEAD gate;
required CI;
hosted CodeRabbit approval.
Task 2's plan said the root re-ask runs under "the attach signal". It now runs under the run's own signal with the listing deadlines (CHANGED, same goal, after the red team's budget finding).
Acceptance edits: baseline unavailable (the plan is not tracked in this repository).

VS Code (Copilot Chat, GPT-6 Luna). Stops data.ts:160 → data.test.ts:372, in execution order. The test passed. The history sealed complete with captureMissing[] and sourceBuild82753fcf. The replay was saved, opened and stepped. Take SHA-256 8faf394e…1fa9.
Cursor (Agent, Grok 4.6 High).
Run 1 sealed partial, reported truthfully: the agent declared stop 6 on an object-literal line (157), and js-debug bound it at 158.
The agent restarted by itself. Run 2 reached 7 stops in execution order, the test passed, and the history sealed complete with captureMissing[].
The replay went from stop 1 to stop 2 and back to stop 1, showing identical recorded source, values and stack.
Take SHA-256 ffbeba88…edf.
Not seen natively. The early-exit sentence never appeared, because both agents declared their stops in order. Its proof stays at host-test level.
Evidence still valid. Every commit after the candidate changes help or skill wording, docs or a test seam, and no execution path. Both runs conform to the new wording, and neither ended with an error before its first stop.
15-check exact-HEAD gate on the final head be9637f7: PASS. (It also passed on 5e998ae2.)
format, typecheck, lint, health:static, dupes and dead-code;
Every finding was fixed, each with a test that fails without the fix, and every thread was resolved through GraphQL. All findings were Minor.

be9637f7: each unreleased listing in the native trial's private report keeps its own release error
Gate defect (GATE-H1).pnpm health failed once on 5aa799fc, in studyWorkspaceRemoval's refused-look test.
Cause. The test's seam kept one shared variable that any other ending save could reset.
Fix.5e998ae2 counts the saves running per folder.
Evidence. An injected unrelated save reproduces the failure with the old seam and passes with the new one.

Documentation
Status: current. The Step 18 audit needed no edits. Hosted CodeRabbit's fixes then reworded extension/README.md, CHANGELOG.md [0.2.44.0] and the bundled skill (1.0.48), each matching the code.
Scope: committed (base 1b2dcfa to HEAD d8a9f0a), staged and unstaged changes, and the nine documentation files tracked or newly added, including extension/README.md, extension/skills/codebook/SKILL.md, docs/agents/* and fixtures, with the 16-file source diff checked for changed contracts.
Documentation health:
README.md Current (Implementation status and Tracking and continuation name Cycle 0054 active, Cycle 0053 closed, 0.2.44.0, MCP API 1.8)
extension/README.md Current (a sentence exists for every behavior the CHANGELOG entry names: early-exit continuation and the stop-order help, root-claim re-ask before launch, listing-release refusal, 30 s per listing and 107 s total with a separate attach budget, no further listing after a stop during release)
CHANGELOG.md Current (the [0.2.44.0] entry matches the code and constants; not edited)
extension/skills/codebook/SKILL.md Current (1.0.48 after hosted CodeRabbit on 98d70e3e: one sentence about a run that ends before its first stop)
AGENTS.md, PRODUCT_GOAL.md Current (unchanged, no contradiction)
TODOS.md Skipped (does not exist)
Documentation debt: the test-only private native-trial hold limit (NATIVE_TRIAL_HOLD_LIMIT_MS) has no user documentation. The CHANGELOG does not name it, so the README rule does not require it, and it is reference-only coverage. No architecture diagram drift.

… re-asks a changed root claim, and the native trial keeps unreleased listings
Task 1 (N53-F1): a test that exits before its next declared stop ends the
continuation with "Owned Node test exited with <code or signal> before
declared stop <n>", the stop-order rule and where its output is, instead of
only "the owned debug session ended". The node-test help's walkthrough and
testSelection say that additional stops are reached only in the order the
test runs them.
Task 2 (CR-OD1): a package-mode launch whose plan made a root claim
(not-selected, several-projects, listing-failed) lists the cited test from
the opened root with the root's Vitest right before its package listing and
refuses with the changed-plan sentence when the root now answers another
rootClaim. A listing that is cancelled, times out, cannot confirm its process
group ended or cannot run refuses with its own error. The owned run forwards
a failed listing release to the launch's own callback.
Task 3 (CR-OD2): the native-trial bootstrap keeps root listing retries for
the whole trial, runs them after planning and again at its end after the
run's stop, and always writes its private report with error and
unreleasedListings; each cleanup step runs in its own try, and the trial
rejects with the first error in order (run, stop, listing, report write).
Refs #130
- advance names an early exit only after Codebook asked the test to run
on; a refusal before the continuation keeps its own words.
- The owned run's Vitest listings run on the run's own signal with their
own deadlines; the attach budget starts after them.
- The native trial report keeps the run's stop error behind an earlier
error.
- isPackageRootClaim ties the re-asked claims to the PackageRootClaim
type; doc links fixed.
- Tests: coverage audit (passing trial, holds, no folder, failure after
the first stop) and review gaps (no-claim launch skips the root,
several-projects cells, slow listings, learner stop, stop error).
Refs #130
- The launch's Vitest listings share a 60-second budget
(NODE_TEST_LISTING_PHASE_TIMEOUT_MS) beside each listing's own
deadline, ending with a sentence that names them; the attach budget
still starts after them.
- The next stop's number is named where advance computes it.
- The native trial's settle adapter is one module function.
Refs #130
- A continuation explains an early exit only before the next stop was
reached; a capture failure at a reached stop keeps its own error
(prepare likewise for stop 1).
- An expired listing budget ends the start before the attach, also when
it passed after the last listing returned.
- The listings' shared budget is 95 seconds, room for three listings at
their own 30-second deadline.
- The native trial report is serialized inside its write step, made
private over an existing file, and keeps the run error's cause and the
listings' release error.
Refs #130
- A listing whose run was already stopped starts no Vitest process, so a
stop during the root listing's release never spawns the package
listing.
- The native trial report is written as a new 0600 file and renamed into
place (no earlier reader, mode or link sees it), keeps its errors when a
run value cannot be serialized, and words values without a string form.
- The listings' shared budget is derived from their deadlines and
releases (107 seconds); constants docs updated.
- Tests: POSIX mode check skipped on Windows; recorded working folders
compared with normalized separators.

Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The additional root listing invokes repository-owned Vitest in a local Node process and can load repository configuration. It repeats an existing planning capability rather than demonstrating new cross-service or tenant authority. Environment filtering limits inherited variables but does not establish filesystem or network sandboxing.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Listing and test launch share the existing environment allowlist rather than inheriting the complete editor environment. Launch continues to use the sealed plan's working directory; neither the environment helper nor launch implementation changed in this PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Listing cleanup retains its destination while the owned process group may still run. Failed releases provide retry callbacks; successful retries are removed while failures remain available for subsequent cleanup. Native-trial reports are now written through an exclusive temporary file with mode 0600 and renamed into place.

…in after the previous stop is reached
The node-test help, the packaged README, the CHANGELOG and two doc comments said a later stop on a line the test ran before the previous stop is never reached. Codebook arms the next stop after the previous one and continues, so such a stop is reached when the test runs that line again (in a loop, for example); only a line that does not run after the previous stop leaves it unreached. The help test fails on the old sentences.

… previous stop; the help names a signal
A test that ended before its first declared stop was told that a stop is reached only when the test runs its line after the previous stop; stop 1 has none, so its sentence now says the first declared stop is reached only when the test runs its line. The node-test help's testSelection named only the exit code of a test that ends before a stop, while the run's error names a signal too; it now says exit code or signal. README and CHANGELOG say both. Two new tests fail without the fix.

…top is not said to have run no test
The node-test help, the bundled skill and the packaged README said a run that ends with an error before its first stop did not run its test. A test that started and exited before that stop did run; such a run reached no stop and explains nothing: a refusal before the launch ran no test, and a test that exited first names its exit code or signal. The bundled skill moves to 1.0.48 for this one sentence; CHANGELOG says so. The help and skill tests fail on the old sentence.
…er save cannot lift the refusal
pnpm health's coverage run on 5aa799f failed 'a recorded run whose saves cannot look at its recording folder keeps its study…' once: history saved, no line. The seam kept one shared variable, set at each saveStudy call and cleared in its finally; the mock sits on the prototype, so any other save that ended (another library's included) lifted the refusal before this save looked. An injected unrelated save reproduces that failure with the old seam and passes with the new one, which refuses a look while the test says so and a save of that folder is running.

… unreleased listing's own release error
The private report named each root listing still not confirmed as ended by its process group and folder only, and listingError keeps the last retry's error, so the first failure of each listing was lost. Each entry of unreleasedListings now carries its listing's reason. Retry order and error precedence are unchanged. The bootstrap test fails without the fix.

OwnedNodeTestRun.advanceused to answer only that the owned debug session ended. When the test exits before the next declared stop, it now names the exit and the stop:Owned Node test exited with code <n> (or signal <s>) before declared stop <N>. A declared stop is reached only when the test runs its line after the previous stop; its output is in the Codebook test output. If Vitest skipped the cited test, check that testTitles names it exactly; see codebook://help/node-test.reachedStopIndex, set once the declared pause matched). A refusal before the continuation keeps its own words, for example after the learner stopped the session. So does a failure while a reached stop's values are captured.testSelectionsay that additional stops are reached only in the order the test runs their lines.CR-OD1: a package-mode launch asks the root claim again.
not-selected,several-projectsorlisting-failed. For such a plan,prepareNodeTestLaunchlists the cited test once more from the opened root with the root's Vitest, right before its package listing (reaskRootClaim,utils/decideRootClaimFromListing.ts,utils/isPackageRootClaim.ts).node-test's plan for <test> changed while the run was preparing (the repository root's Vitest now answers rootClaim <new>, not <old>); start the test again.listing-failedagain. A listing that is cancelled, times out, cannot confirm its process group ended or cannot run refuses with its own error. The owned run forwards a failed listing release to the launch's own callback.NODE_TEST_LISTING_PHASE_TIMEOUT_MS= 3 × (30 s + 4 × 1 s) + 5 s = 107 s. The 45 s attach budget starts after them. The listing budget is checked again after the listings return.laststance/nsxat0897231: the added root listing took 247, 146 and 142 ms (median 146 ms).CR-OD2: the native-trial bootstrap keeps its unreleased listings.
nativeNodeTestBootstrap.tskeeps the retries of root listings that could not be released for the whole trial. It runs them after planning and again at the end of the trial, afterrun.stop().error,errorCause,stopError,listingErrorandunreleasedListings(processGroup,directory). Each cleanup step settles on its own.Docs. The
extension/README.mdnode-test section and changed-plan troubleshooting row, the root README status, the CHANGELOG[0.2.44.0]entry, and the help text inresources.ts. The MCP API stays 1.8, no input or stored format changes, and the bundled skill is unchanged (1.0.47).Changes to existing tests, each with its reason:
nodeTestVitestRootLaunch.test.ts, three tests (H1/H2 package launch, root claim basis, root config changed during the listings):ownedNodeTestRun.test.tsharness:exitAfterStop,endsWhileFirstStopIsRevealed,launchListingMs,listingPhaseMsandafterListingMsoptions;endSessionAsLearnerhelper;nativeNodeTestBootstrap.test.ts: aloadTrialhelper beside the Cycle 0053 test, which is unchanged.scripts/tests/package.test.mjs: the expected version is 0.2.44 (release metadata).Test Coverage
Step 7, pass 1 of 2: 17 paths; 16 have a ★★ or ★★★ test, so the value-weighted figure is 94%; 0 weak paths. Gate PASS (target 80). The remaining path (the runTrial guard row) has a test, added by the parent.
dist, or at1b2dcfa7for the bootstrap.dist.spawncalls through anode:child_processstand-in. The stand-in Vitest was killed before it recorded its start, so the launch test could not tell the fix apart.Tests ran: tests count unavailable (the ledger did not parse the runner summary; Node's own summary reads 6949 tests, 6943 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped)
