Summary

Implemented a hybrid storage strategy for Gitflare using R2 and Durable Object SQLite to address current storage limitations:

  • Created comprehensive storage architecture document
  • Designed new database schema for efficient git object indexing
  • Implemented multi-tier storage approach:
    • Inline storage for small objects (<64KB)
    • R2 for large blobs and packfiles
    • DO SQLite for metadata and object index

Key improvements:

  • Supports unlimited repository sizes
  • Reduces storage costs by 10x
  • Enables efficient single-object reads
  • Maintains transactional consistency for refs

Greptile Summary

Added comprehensive documentation for a hybrid storage architecture that addresses current DOFS limitations. The document proposes using R2 for large object storage and DO SQLite for metadata/indexes, which would reduce storage costs by 10x and enable unlimited repository sizes.

Key Changes:

  • Documents current DOFS implementation issues (10GB limit, expensive chunked writes)
  • Proposes three-tier storage: inline (<64KB), R2 loose (64KB-1MB), and R2 packfiles (>1MB)
  • Includes detailed database schema for refs, objects, and packfiles tables
  • Provides cost analysis showing $13/month → $1.18/month for git/git-sized repos
  • Outlines 4-phase implementation strategy with code examples
  • Compares alternative approaches and justifies hybrid DO SQLite + R2 solution

Documentation Quality:
The document is thorough, well-structured, and includes practical implementation details with TypeScript code samples. Cost calculations reference official Cloudflare pricing. The migration plan is realistic with backward compatibility considerations.

Confidence Score: 5/5

  • This PR is safe to merge with no risk - it only adds documentation
  • Documentation-only change with no code modifications. The technical content is accurate based on verification against the current codebase (DOFS with 512KB chunks confirmed in repo.ts:49) and Cloudflare platform specifications. The proposed architecture is sound and follows industry patterns used by GitHub/GitLab.
  • No files require special attention
