fix(utils): preserve trailing hash in markdown content title without preceding space - #12844
When a document has no explicit title in front matter and begins with an ATX heading ending in a hash without preceding whitespace (e.g. # Learn C#, # F#), parseMarkdownContentTitle previously stripped the trailing hash via .replace(/\s*(?:\{#*[\w-]+\}|#+)$/, ''), resulting in titles like "Learn C".
Under the CommonMark specification, an ATX heading's closing sequence of # characters must be preceded by at least one space or tab. Trailing # characters attached directly to a word (such as in C# or F#) are part of the heading text and should be preserved.
Solution
Updated parseMarkdownContentTitle in packages/docusaurus-utils/src/markdownUtils.ts to only strip trailing # sequences when preceded by whitespace (\s+#+$), and to strip custom IDs separately (\s*\{#*[\w-]+\}$).
Added unit tests in packages/docusaurus-utils/src/__tests__/markdownUtils.test.ts verifying:
Trailing hash without preceding whitespace (e.g. # Learn C#) is preserved.
Trailing hash with custom heading id (e.g. # Learn C# {#learn-csharp}) is preserved.
ATX closing # preceded by whitespace (e.g. # Learn C# #) is stripped down to Learn C#.
Test Plan
Added unit tests to packages/docusaurus-utils/src/__tests__/markdownUtils.test.ts covering each scenario. Verified all existing and new test assertions pass.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Markdown page titles now correctly exclude closing heading markers and custom heading IDs when both are present, while preserving meaningful trailing characters such as C#.
Tests
Added coverage for titles with trailing heading markers and custom IDs, including different ID placements and titles containing C#.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
parseMarkdownContentTitle now removes trailing ATX markers and custom heading IDs in stages. New tests check that titles ending in C# retain the literal hash, including when a custom heading ID or closing ATX marker is present.

Hash-only headings can retain a stray hash in generated labels. This is a narrow title-parsing regression; the custom-ID cases are otherwise corrected.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: trailing # in a markdown content title is now kept when it is not preceded by whitespace. The raw summary shows parseMarkdownContentTitle changed to strip trailing ATX markers and custom heading IDs in separate steps, with new tests for hashes attached to words. The linked issue #12644 asks for the same behavior (for example, # Learn C# keeps its #). The title is specific and matches the changeset, so it passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #12644 requires that a heading such as # Learn C# yields the title "Learn C#" when front matter has no title. Whole-PR diff against the merge base (current head) changes parseMarkdownContentTitle in packages/docusaurus-utils/src/markdownUtils.ts. The new chain is: (1) .replace(/[ \t]+#+$/, ''), (2) .replace(/\s*\{#*[\w-]+\}$/, ''), (3) .replace(/[ \t]+#+$/, ''). This differs from the previously reviewed chain, so I traced the new code for each case. Learn C#: no whitespace precedes the #, so no step matches and the result is Learn C#. Learn C# {#learn-csharp}: step 2 removes the ID, step 3 finds no whitespace before #, and the result is Learn C#. Learn C# #: step 1 removes the closing sequence, and the result is Learn C#. Learn C# # {#id}: step 2 removes the ID, and step 3 removes the exposed closing sequence, which gives Learn C#. This matches the CommonMark closing-sequence rule cited in the issue. The title feeds the browser title, sidebar label, and pagination label through the existing contentTitle path, which was not changed. The test file diff could not be read at the reviewed head, so test coverage is taken from the PR description and does not change this verdict. The requirement concerns code behavior, which the trace establishes.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff against the merge base changes only the parseMarkdownContentTitle expression in packages/docusaurus-utils/src/markdownUtils.ts. The change replaces one suffix-stripping expression with a three-step chain that serves the same purpose, so it stays within the title behavior requested by #12644. The PR also adds unit tests in packages/docusaurus-utils/src/__tests__/markdownUtils.test.ts for the same title behavior. The test file diff could not be read, so the test content is not verified. No unrelated files or behavior changes appear in the available evidence. The only behavior change beyond the target case is for inputs such as # #, where the title stays # instead of an empty string. This follows the same CommonMark rule and is not an unrelated change.

Apply the closing-hash removal before the custom ID removal.
For # Heading {#id} #, the title becomes Heading {#id}. The ID regex runs first and finds no match because the line ends with #. The page title, sidebar label, and pagination label then show the ID markup.

Match CommonMark closing-hash whitespace on line 338.
Line 338 treats any \s character as whitespace before a closing #, including U+00A0 (non-breaking space). CommonMark allows only spaces or tabs there. For # Learn, U+00A0, #, the title becomes Learn, but the rendered heading keeps #. Restrict the class to [ \t].

Strip whitespace-separated closing hashes when the title is only hashes.
For # # or # ###, the new .replace(/\s+#+$/, '') finds no leading whitespace, so the title stays # or ###. This is a regression: the previous regex returned an empty title, and the page title, sidebar label, and pagination label now show a stray #.
IMPORTANT
Review the replacement and indentation, then test before committing.

Addressed: reordered closing hash and custom heading ID regexes and restricted whitespace to [ \t]+\ per CommonMark ATX specification so closing hashes are handled cleanly whether positioned before or after custom heading IDs.
