📝 Walkthrough

Adds QCBOR integration and JSON conversion for evaluation attributes. Reworks flagd fractional evaluation to use deterministic CBOR hashing and JSON variant selection. Replaces V2 tests with V3 coverage for supported types, structures, validation, weights, and conditions.

Changes: flagd fractional evaluation v3

Layer / File(s) Summary
Context conversion and QCBOR integration
MODULE.bazel, providers/flagd/qcbor.BUILD, providers/flagd/src/evaluator/BUILD, providers/flagd/src/evaluator/evaluator.cpp
Adds the QCBOR dependency and converts openfeature::Value and nlohmann::json attributes into targeting JSON.
Deterministic fractional evaluation
providers/flagd/src/evaluator/flagd_ops.cpp
Uses deterministic CBOR encoding and MurmurHash3 for fractional bucketing. Validates inputs, parses distributions inline, and selects JSON variants.
Fractional V3 validation coverage
providers/flagd/tests/evaluator/flagd_fractional_op_test.cpp
Updates expected V3 results and adds coverage for value types, numeric limits, structures, UTF-8, validation errors, weights, conditions, and nested logic.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f2e74

Fractional bucketing now hashes typed context values deterministically. Several small issues remain open: very large configured weights are not range-checked, the hash length guard is missing, a few Unicode test cases do not test the characters they intend to, and a lint failure may still be present. None of these is likely to break typical flag evaluations, but they should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f2e74

The new bucketing format intentionally changes assignments and requires coordinated upgrades where runtimes must agree. The expanded serialization path also loses an existing hash-input length safeguard and does not enforce a payload or nesting budget. Host-process availability could be affected if applications pass sufficiently large or deeply nested untrusted context. Deployment-specific exposure remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The widened context-to-native-serialization boundary does not enforce a byte or nesting budget. Unlike the base implementation, head passes the encoded size to MurmurHash3 through an unchecked int conversion after allocating the CBOR buffer. Successful encoding does not establish that this length satisfies the hash routine's contract. Recursive traversal also occurs before final encoder-error checks. Where callers admit sufficiently large or deeply nested hostile context, this can undermine host-process failure containment; practical exploitability and upstream limits are unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Potential hostile-input exposure depends on an application forwarding attacker-influenced context. Hashing exposure additionally requires a configured rule to select that value. The supported failure scope is the provider's host process and colocated evaluations; remote reachability, tenant sharing, and fleet-wide exposure are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The newly identified conditional attack path is caller-controlled context to recursive conversion or encoding, then allocation and native hashing without a preserved length bound. Excessive nesting or size can escape ordinary status-based failure containment. This is not a demonstrated remote exploit or an authorization bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Context remains evaluation data, while configured targeting logic selects operations and distributions. Head rejects null bucketing input, requires a string targetingKey for shorthand, validates distribution shape and floating-point weight integrality, and checks both encoder completion statuses. These controls do not impose a successful-output byte limit or application recursion budget.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Bucketing uses per-call local state and reads a const flag snapshot rather than reserving or mutating shared assignments. Ordinary operation errors reach existing configured-default or caller-default resolution. The inspected exception handler covers final variant conversion, not context conversion, CBOR allocation, or native hashing failures.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define and enforce context depth, node-count, and encoded-byte budgets before expensive traversal and allocation. Validate that successful encoded lengths fit the native hash parameter, and route budget failures through explicit evaluation-error behavior.
  • proposed — Define an upgrade and rollback compatibility policy for deployments that require consistent cohorts across runtimes, using shared conformance vectors and explicit treatment of mixed-version operation.

Log the unsupported openfeature::Value type before the null fallback.

ValueToJson returns JSON null for any type it cannot map. The attribute then reaches the targeting data as null, and Fractional rejects it later with "Fractional evaluation data cannot be null". The original type is lost. Add a warning here so the root cause stays visible.

Move the repeated eval lambda into the fixture.

Restore the hash input length guard before the cast to int.

The deleted CalculateHash rejected inputs longer than INT_MAX. The new code casts encoded.len to int without that check. A previous review raised the same concern.

Use real characters in these three inputs, not escape text.

"A\\u0000B", "e\\u0301", and "\\uD83D\\uDE00" contain a literal backslash followed by u. As a result, the test does not cover an embedded NUL, a combining mark, or an emoji. After you use the real characters, take the expected buckets again from the Gherkin suite. A previous review raised the same concern.
