editExpense now reads groupId and writes it on the same update as the payer and participant rows, including an explicit null when the caller clears the group. Before either edit path in the expense router, assertExpenseGroupReassignment allows a null group to become a real group only when that group exists, is not archived, and contains the acting user, the payer, and every participant. An expense that already has a group must keep that same groupId. The new splitService tests cover the update payload and these rejections, and the Jest config sets SKIP_ENV_VALIDATION when it is unset so next/jest can load without a local env file. Fixes oss-apps#763

Establish expense-level permission before group reassignment. Target-group membership does not authorize editing the source expense. A caller with a known ungrouped expense ID can assign an expense they do not own to a group they belong to.

Before I review this, could you rebase the branch and update the test file to rely on the new testing infra? |
validateEditExpensePermission let any caller through when the expense had a non-null addedBy, because it only checked that addedBy existed. It now requires the caller to be a participant or the user who added the expense. The currency-conversion edit path also runs this check before assertExpenseGroupReassignment, so a user who knows another person's ungrouped expense ID can no longer move it into one of their groups through either edit path. Refs oss-apps#763
…ion harness Main now runs validateExpenseWritePermission on every expense and currency-conversion write. It checks edit permission, group existence, membership and archive state, and it rejected any change to an expense's groupId, which blocked the oss-apps#763 fix. The conflict in addOrEditExpense is resolved by keeping main's write check and dropping this branch's older inline group lookup. The groupId comparison now only rejects a change when the stored expense already has a group, so an ungrouped expense can be assigned to a group while a grouped one still cannot move or be ungrouped. assertExpenseGroupReassignment still runs on both edit paths to require that the payer and every participant belong to the target group. The extra validateEditExpensePermission call in the conversion path is removed because main's write check already runs it. The mocked splitService.test.ts is replaced by src/tests/integration/expenseGroupReassignment.integration.test.ts, which uses the shared factories and tRPC caller against the disposable test database. It covers persisting the group on edit, both linked currency-conversion records, an unrelated caller, a caller, payer or participant outside the group, and an archived group. Each rejection leaves accounting unchanged. Refs oss-apps#763

Merged main into the branch and moved the tests to the new harness. The mocked splitService.test.ts is gone; the coverage now lives in src/tests/integration/expenseGroupReassignment.integration.test.ts and goes through the real tRPC caller and factories. One thing to flag: validateExpenseWritePermission on main rejected any groupId change on edit, which is exactly what #763 needs, so I relaxed it to only reject when the expense already has a group. Moving a grouped expense to another group or ungrouping it is still rejected, and the existing authorization tests for that are unchanged. Lint, tsc and the unit suite pass locally. I couldn't run the integration suite on this machine (no pg_cron), so the integration job here is the first real run of those tests. I merged rather than rebased to avoid a force push; happy to squash if you prefer. |

Both edit procedures call
validateExpenseWritePermissionand thenassertExpenseGroupReassignment. For an ungrouped expense assigned to a group, both helpers repeat the group existence, archive, and actor-membership checks. They also perform duplicate expense and group queries. The helpers are not exact duplicates.
assertExpenseGroupReassignmentadditionally checks the payer and participants, and the immutability errors differ. Preserve those checks and the current early-return behavior while moving the shared group rules into one validator.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Description
editExpense now reads groupId and writes it on the same update as the payer and participant rows, including an explicit null when the caller clears the group.
Saving an edit that places a previously ungrouped expense into a group completes with no error, yet the expense never shows up in that group's list. Opening the expense again still shows the original individual participants. editExpense omitted groupId from the fields it read off its input and from the data passed to the expense update. The group id the edit form already submitted was dropped, so an expense stored with a null groupId stayed ungrouped.
