Description

Adds arithmetic directly to the add/edit expense amount field. The raw expression stays visible after blur while its exact evaluated amount drives the live split calculation. Saving persists only the computed currency amount. Each operand is limited to the selected currency precision, alternate decimal marks normalize to the locale separator, and invalid or incomplete expressions cannot be saved. Expression entry is limited to expense amounts in this PR; settlement and currency-conversion fields are out of scope.

Closes #632. Supersedes #761.

Demo

Manual frontend checks:

  • 12.50+3.75 evaluates to 16.25.
  • 2+3*4 evaluates to 14; (2+3)*4 evaluates to 20.
  • 9007199254740992+1 preserves the exact integer result.
  • 1-2 creates a received expense.
  • 5/0, 0/0, 10+, and 3..5 are rejected; editing 10+ to 10+1 recovers normally.
  • JPY input drops fractional digits; USD terms are capped at two decimals; German 12,5+3.75 normalizes to 12,5+3,75 and evaluates to 16.25.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Expense amounts can now include arithmetic expressions, such as 12.50 + 3, with support for parentheses and standard operator precedence.
    • Expression results are rounded to the selected currency’s precision. Existing plain-number entry remains available.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid expressions display an error and prevent submission. Zero-value results are also prevented from being submitted.

Walkthrough

Expense amount fields can now accept arithmetic expressions. The app sanitizes and evaluates expression input, converts valid results to the selected currency’s integer amount, and uses that amount when submitting an expense.

Changes: Expense Amount Expressions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expression evaluation and currency conversion
src/utils/expression.ts, src/utils/numbers.ts, src/tests/expression.test.ts, src/tests/number.test.ts
New utilities sanitize and evaluate arithmetic expressions as exact rational values. Currency helpers convert results to currency-scaled integer amounts. Tests cover parsing, invalid input, and currency rounding.
Expression-enabled currency input
src/components/ui/currency-input.tsx
CurrencyInput adds the optional allowExpressions prop. When enabled, it sanitizes and evaluates expression-shaped input while retaining existing handling for other amounts.
Expense submission integration
src/components/AddExpense/AddExpensePage.tsx, public/locales/en/common.json
The expense page enables expression entry and evaluates expression input on submission. Invalid expressions show a translated error. Zero results stop submission; other results become the submitted amount with the existing sign handling.

Changing currency after entering an expression can save participant balances in the wrong units, and malformed expressions can save unintended amounts. Resolve both before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat: allow calculations in expense amounts" matches the main change. The PR adds arithmetic expression entry to the add/edit expense amount field, including evaluation, sanitization, and computed-amount persistence. The title is short, specific, and follows a conventional-commit style. It does not name the exact scope (for example, the exact-arithmetic evaluator), but that detail is not needed for a teammate scanning history.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #632 requires: (1) entering arithmetic in the expense amount field, and (2) saving only the calculated result as the expense amount. The automatic comment with the original calculation is optional (bonus, needs #61) and is not assessed as a requirement.

Evidence at head:

  • src/components/AddExpense/AddExpensePage.tsx: the expense amount CurrencyInput sets allowExpressions. In addExpense, when isExpression(amtStr) is true, the code calls safeEvaluateExpression(amtStr). On null, it shows t('errors.invalid_expression') and returns. Otherwise it sets finalAmount = BigMath.abs(getCurrencyHelpersCached(currency).expressionResultToBigInt(evaluated)). The mutation sends finalAmount * sign, so only the computed amount is persisted. The Save buttons are disabled when amount is falsy.
  • src/utils/expression.ts: exact rational evaluation (ExpressionResult numerator/denominator, reduced by gcd). It supports + - * /, parentheses, and unary signs with standard precedence. It returns null for empty input, malformed numbers, unbalanced parentheses, trailing input, and division by zero (divide returns null when the divisor is 0).
  • src/utils/expression.ts: sanitizeExpressionInput limits fractional digits per operand to the currency precision and normalizes the alternate decimal mark.
  • src/utils/numbers.ts: expressionResultToBigInt scales the exact result to the currency's minor units with BigMath.roundDiv.
  • Tests: src/tests/expression.test.ts and src/tests/number.test.ts cover detection, sanitization, evaluation, rejection cases, and USD/JPY conversion.

Limits of this review: src/components/ui/currency-input.tsx was not read directly. Blur retention and live split behavior rely on the supplied summary and PR description. The core evaluation and persistence logic was read from source.

No unmet coding requirement from #632 is established.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed areas connect to expense-amount expression entry from #632:

  • public/locales/en/common.json: adds errors.invalid_expression, the message shown when safeEvaluateExpression returns null in AddOrEditExpensePage.
  • src/components/AddExpense/AddExpensePage.tsx: evaluates expression input on save and persists the computed amount. The allowExpressions prop is set only on the expense amount CurrencyInput in this file.
  • src/components/ui/currency-input.tsx: adds the optional allowExpressions prop (default false). Existing inputs keep current behavior. Settlement and currency-conversion fields do not set this prop, as stated in the PR description.
  • src/utils/expression.ts: new parser, sanitizer, and detector used only for expression entry.
  • src/utils/numbers.ts: adds expressionResultToBigInt and exposes currency decimal helpers used by the expression conversion.
  • src/tests/expression.test.ts and src/tests/number.test.ts: tests for the new code.

No change is established as unrelated to #632. Repository inspection of currency-input.tsx and the full PR diff was unavailable, so the scope check relies on the supplied file summaries and the source reads of the files listed above.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 6 files.

Recalculate the expression and participant splits when the currency changes.

A currency switch can persist the expense amount in the new currency while participant amounts remain in the old currency. BalanceView calculates group balances from participant amounts and labels them with Expense.currency, so the group balance can show the old-unit amount as the new currency. No inspected constraint reconciles these fields. Editing or deleting the expense provides only a manual recovery path.

Do not use the stored amount alone at submit. When the currency changes, re-evaluate the expression with the selected currency and pass the result through setAmount, which also recalculates participant splits. Alternatively, clear the expression and require a new amount.

Reject duplicate decimal marks before evaluating an expense.

If a user enters 1.2.3+4, this branch drops the second mark. CurrencyInput then evaluates 1.23+4 and passes the valid result to the expense callback. The malformed expression can therefore become a different saved amount. Keep duplicate marks invalid, or reject the raw expression before sanitization.
