📋 Prerequisites

Requirement Version Notes
Python 3.8+ Required
Node.js 16+ For frontend dashboard
npm 8+ Bundled with Node.js
Admin/Root Required For packet capture
Npcap / libpcap Latest Windows: Npcap, Linux/Mac: libpcap

🖥️ Windows Setup

1. Install Npcap (Required for packet capture)

Download and install from: https://npcap.com/#download

  • Enable "Install Npcap in WinPcap API-compatible Mode"

2. Clone and Setup Python Environment

git clone https://github.com/pathakpk7/SecureNet_IDS.git
cd SecureNet_IDS
python -m venv venv
venv\Scripts\activate
pip install -r requirements.txt

3. Install Frontend Dependencies

cd securenet-ui
npm install
cd ..

4. Configure Environment

copy .env.example .env
notepad .env

5. Find Your Network Interface

Get-NetAdapter | Select-Object Name, Status

Update NETWORK_INTERFACE=Wi-Fi (or your interface name) in .env

🐧 Linux Setup

1. Install libpcap

sudo apt-get install libpcap-dev   # Ubuntu/Debian
sudo yum install libpcap-devel     # CentOS/RHEL

2. Clone and Setup

git clone https://github.com/pathakpk7/SecureNet_IDS.git
cd SecureNet_IDS
python3 -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt

3. Find Your Network Interface

ip link show
# or
ifconfig -a

Update NETWORK_INTERFACE=eth0 in .env

4. Run with privileges (required for packet capture)

sudo python backend/main.py

🍎 macOS Setup

brew install libpcap
git clone https://github.com/pathakpk7/SecureNet_IDS.git
cd SecureNet_IDS
python3 -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt

🔧 Environment Configuration

Edit your .env file:

# === Database (Optional - falls back to SQLite if not set) ===
SUPABASE_URL=https://your-project.supabase.co
SUPABASE_KEY=your-anon-key

# === Threat Intelligence API Keys (Optional but recommended) ===
VIRUSTOTAL_API_KEY=your_key_here
ABUSEIPDB_API_KEY=your_key_here
URLSCAN_API_KEY=your_key_here
OTX_API_KEY=your_key_here

# === Network Settings ===
NETWORK_INTERFACE=Wi-Fi     # Windows
# NETWORK_INTERFACE=eth0    # Linux
# NETWORK_INTERFACE=en0     # macOS

# === Server Settings ===
HOST=0.0.0.0
PORT=8000
DEBUG=false
LOG_LEVEL=INFO

Note: The system works fully without API keys using the embedded SQLite database and offline ML model. API keys enhance threat intelligence enrichment.

✅ Verify Installation

# Test backend starts correctly
python backend/main.py

# Should see:
# ✅ SecureNet IDS started successfully!
# 📡 Network monitoring engine active and running
# INFO: Uvicorn running on http://0.0.0.0:8000

Visit http://localhost:8000/health — should return {"status": "healthy"}
