Include TiDB #71844, align parser, and update the required TiKV client.
The TiDB dependency upgrade intentionally removes malformed URLs from parse errors. Assert the safe error message and ensure the input is not exposed instead of requiring the old raw URL.

Redact credentials inside the S3 endpoint before logging the path.
For a non-full task, this branch logs cfg.Dir even when its S3 endpoint parameter contains a credential. In the pinned TiDB version, objstore.RedactURL leaves the S3 endpoint parameter intact. For example, a URL-encoded endpoint=https://user:private-pass@host retains private-pass in this log. Redact the nested endpoint or omit that parameter in diagnostic output. Apply the same fix to the other new objstore.RedactURL log fields. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Redact password parameters in request URLs.
If a request contains ?password=private-pass, RequestURL leaves password unchanged because the key is absent from this switch. query.Encode() then puts private-pass back into the diagnostic URL. Add common credential keys such as password and clientsecret, and test that their values do not appear in the output. (pkg.go.dev)

Traverse values under non-string YAML keys.
If a YAML configuration contains extra: {1: {dir: "s3://bucket/path?secret-access-key=private-sk"}}, the numeric key causes redactConfigURL to skip the nested dir. YAMLConfigWithRedactedURL then emits the credential in diagnostic output. Traverse every value; pass an empty key for a non-string map key.
Based on learnings, configuration values that contain secrets must be redacted before they enter logs.

Response copies for get-config, OpenAPI tasks and query-status were produced by four differently named helpers spread over three packages. Replace them with a single Redacted method on each response type, so callers do not need to remember a helper per type. The list helper is dropped in favor of looping over the single-item method. Behavior is unchanged: copies still hide storage URL credentials via objstore.RedactURL and never modify the original objects. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
encoding/json escapes '&' as &, and checker results returned as CheckResult are JSON. TextWithRedactedURL handed such URLs to objstore.RedactURL unchanged, so every parameter after the first was parsed as part of the first value. When the first parameter was not sensitive, for example region, the access key and secret key were kept in the output, only URL-encoded. Restore escaped separators before redaction and escape them again afterwards, including JSON nested in a JSON string. Trailing backslashes that escape the closing quote are kept outside the URL so the surrounding JSON stays valid. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ConfigFieldWithRedactedURL marshaled every config to JSON, decoded it, walked it by field name and marshaled it again. It changed the log format of configs that were previously printed as YAML, and cost about 450 allocations per log entry. Add SubTaskConfig.Redacted next to TaskConfig.Redacted and log the redacted copies with the original fields and formats. Collections are copied item by item. A test lists directory-like config fields so that Redacted is reviewed when a new one is added. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
TOMLConfigWithRedactedURL only served two logs, and neither needed the raw TOML: - CheckSubtasksCanUpdate decodes the TOML right away. Invalid TOML could only be logged as a placeholder anyway, so log the decoded config through SubTaskConfig.Redacted instead. - The v1 metadata import only logged the raw TOML when decoding failed, which also produced a placeholder, and did not log the error itself. Log the task name and the redacted error instead. Remove the helper, its request MarshalLogObject, and the TOML-only branch of the config walker. YAML request redaction is kept, because the raw request is the only record of a task config that fails validation. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

[P1] URL extraction stops before credentials
The regex treats apostrophes as delimiters even inside valid URLs. For example:
TextWithRedactedURL("s3://bucket/customer's-dump?access-key=private-ak&secret-access-key=private-sk")returns both credentials unchanged, while the pinned TiDB helper masks them correctly. This also reproduces inside JSON diagnostics and standard net/url.Error messages containing apostrophes in HTTP userinfo. Make extraction handle these boundaries conservatively and add regression cases.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Nice find, thanks 👍 Done in 734248c .
Just letting the scanner span ' would open a different hole: adjacent quoted URLs like ['s3://a?region=r','s3://b?secret-access-key=sk'] get merged into one URL, and the second secret ends up inside the region value. So TextWithRedactedURL now:
- redacts URLs split at apostrophes first, as before
- then redacts any match that still contains an apostrophe again, as a whole URL
A trailing ' is treated as a closing quote and kept outside the URL. Added regression cases for apostrophes in the path, net/url.Error userinfo, quoted YAML values, adjacent quoted URLs and JSON-escaped text.

[P1] Caller logs the same storage error without redaction
This redacted log returns the original error to Syncer.Run, which logs it again using zap.Error(err) at line 1929. Azure's listing SDK returns errors containing the complete request URL, including SAS signatures. A connection-refused probe using the pinned Azure SDK produced:
Get "http://127.0.0.1:65151/bucket?comp=list&restype=container&sig=private-sas-signature&sv=2024-11-04": dial tcp ...: connect: connection refused
AzureBlobStorage.WalkDir propagates this error through storage.CollectDirFiles. Redact the outer log too and test the complete caller path so the inner masking cannot be undone.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Right, the inner log was redacted but Run logged the very same error again. Fixed in 21afee1 .
I pulled the load-and-flush step out of Run into loadAndFlushTableStructureFromDump, so the caller-side log can be tested directly, and it now uses redact.ErrorFieldWithRedactedURL. The new test makes WalkDir return an error carrying a SAS sig and checks every log entry from that entry point.
I also went through the other places that log a storage error and return it: dumpling, loader and lightning all hand theirs to unit.NewProcessError, which already redacts, so this was the only one leaking through a caller.

[P2] Nested S3 endpoint credentials survive the shared policy
The pinned objstore.RedactURL preserves this URL, including the encoded password:
s3://bucket/path?endpoint=https%3A%2F%2Fuser%3Aprivate-password%40example.com
S3BackendOptions.Apply accepts such endpoint userinfo, so these credentials remain in diagnostic copies and configuration responses. Fix nested endpoint handling in the shared TiDB policy and update the dependency, preserving the single-policy design.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Confirmed that RedactURL keeps userinfo nested in endpoint for S3 and GCS (Azure masks the whole endpoint value). I checked what that userinfo actually exposes, though, and it is not a working credential in DM:
- S3: against a local fake S3 with
endpoint=http://user:pass@127.0.0.1:<port>, requests signed withaccess-key/secret-access-keycarry only the SigV4Authorizationheader. Go only turns URL userinfo into Basic auth whenAuthorizationis empty, so the userinfo is never sent. Without any credentials the SDK fails atget credentialsand sends no request at all. - GCS: same setup. With
credentials-fileor ADC, requests carryAuthorization: Bearer <token>, again without Basic auth. Without credentials, creating the storage fails withcould not find default credentials, before any request. - The only GCS mode that leaves
Authorizationempty isNoCredentials(https://github.com/pingcap/tidb/blob/03148cd4adf3f26f5c8f529b89a30c1dba690713/pkg/objstore/gcs.go#L440-L444). DM never enables it:CreateStoragepasses empty options (), and dumpling and lightning don't set it in the pinned TiDB revision either.tiflow/dm/pkg/storage/utils.go
Lines 112 to 118 in 40062a6
So what can leak is a string the user mistakenly put into endpoint, which DM never uses to authenticate. The real secrets (access-key, secret-access-key, session-token, Azure account-key and sas-token) are all masked already, and credentials-file is just a local path. It's still worth cleaning up, but it's log hygiene rather than a credential leak. The right place is nested-URL handling in TiDB's shared RedactURL (https://github.com/pingcap/tidb/blob/03148cd4adf3f26f5c8f529b89a30c1dba690713/pkg/objstore/parse.go#L75-L96), and I'd rather not bump the TiDB dependency again in this PR just for it 🙂

[P2] Redacted task responses break ordinary UI edits
The UI preloads its edit form directly from this task list (dm/ui/src/pages/migration/task/index.tsx:467, dm/ui/src/components/CreateOrUpdateTask/index.tsx:135-142) and submits data_dir back unchanged (CreateOrUpdateTask/index.tsx:84-109).
For an S3-backed task paused in the sync unit, changing a supported filter therefore also submits masked storage credentials. Syncer.CheckCanUpdateCfg compares LoaderConfig.Dir against the original and rejects the update as an immutable-field change. Preserve stored credentials for unchanged masked fields or add explicit credential handling to the edit flow, with a list-to-edit-to-update regression test. This finding is based on the static call-path trace; it was not reproduced against a running cluster.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed, and it turned out a bit wider than the update path 🔍 Done in ed4f9b1 :
updateTasknow callsTask.RestoreRedactedwith the stored task before checking: if the submitteddata_direquals the redacted form of the stored one, the stored value is used, while adata_dirthe client actually changed is kept. It runs before the checker, since the checker may access the storage.DMAPUpdateTaskTemplatedoes the same. Templates have no update guard at all, so a GET → PUT round trip silently replaced the stored credentials withxxxxxx.- The converter response is no longer redacted. The YAML editor creates tasks from the converter output ( ), so redacting it would create new tasks with masked credentials, with nothing stored to restore from. It only converts the caller's own input.
For tests, TestTaskEditKeepsRedactedStorageCredentials goes list → edit → PUT with the real Syncer.CheckCanUpdateCfg as the worker-side guard (without the fix it fails with the immutable-field error), plus a template GET → PUT. There is also a config-level round trip for a two-source S3 task, since each source dumps to its own subdirectory that getTask trims.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Ohh, we shouldn't redact the url returned by openapi, which will break the config update pipeline. Just like how we treat password for openapi.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Follow-up: I changed the approach in fcbc833 and dropped RestoreRedacted.
Restoring only works while the stored task still exists. The general replacement path that #12757 added for OpenAPI is GET → DELETE ?keep_meta=true → POST the full body → start, matching dmctl's stop-task → start-task <config>. By the time the body is posted, the old task is gone, so a redacted data_dir from GET can't be restored anymore, and the recreated task would keep xxxxxx as its credentials.
So storage credentials now follow how each output already treats the target database password:
- OpenAPI task and template responses return the stored
data_diragain, liketarget_config.password. Both PUT and the keep-meta replacement round-trip as on master. dmctl config taskkeeps hiding both. It already replaced the target password with******before this PR (), so its output already needed secrets to be filled in again before reuse.Line 2527 in 40062a6
- Logs, errors and status diagnostics stay redacted. The response bodies aren't logged anywhere.
TestTaskRoundTripKeepsStorageCredentials now covers GET → PUT (through Syncer.CheckCanUpdateCfg), GET → delete with keep_meta → create, and template GET → PUT with an S3 data_dir.
Apostrophes are valid in URL paths and userinfo, but the URL scanner stopped at them, so credentials after an apostrophe were kept. Scanning across apostrophes alone would merge adjacent quoted URLs, so URLs are first redacted between apostrophes, then again as a whole when they contain one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Run logged the error returned by loadTableStructureFromDump with zap.Error, while storage SDK errors may contain the complete request URL, such as Azure SAS signatures. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The UI edits tasks from the redacted task list and submits data_dir back, so updating a task was rejected as an immutable field change, and updating a template stored the masked credentials. Restore the stored data_dir when the redacted one is submitted back. The converter only converts the request, and the UI creates tasks from its response, so it no longer redacts storage credentials. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Updating a task requires a full task body, and replacing a task deletes it with keep_meta and creates it again, so clients build the new body from the task they read. Redacted storage credentials cannot be restored after the task is deleted, so the recreated task would keep masked credentials. Like the target database password, OpenAPI task and template responses return the stored data_dir again, while dmctl get-config keeps hiding both. Logs, errors and status diagnostics are still redacted. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

What problem does this PR solve?
DM can expose credentials embedded in storage URLs through logs, errors, status responses, and dmctl configuration exports.
Issue Number: ref #12909
What is changed and how it works?
objstore.RedactURLas the only URL credential policy. Keep configuration/text/proxy input adapters together indm/pkg/redact/storage.go; configuration types expose their ownRedacted()copies for logging.dmctl config taskexports. HTTP access/forwarding logs record the path without query parameters.dmctl config taskhides both, while OpenAPI task and template responses return the storeddata_dir. Updating a task requires a full task body, and replacing a task deletes it withkeep_metaand creates it again, so clients must be able to submit back the task they read.Password/TLS and worker business-data redaction remain in #12897. Userinfo nested in an S3/GCS
endpointparameter is not used for authentication by DM; masking it belongs to TiDB's sharedRedactURL.Check List
Tests
data_dir(GET → PUT checked bySyncer.CheckCanUpdateCfg, GET → delete withkeep_meta→ create, template GET → PUT), run against MySQL 8.0 with failpoints enabled:Earlier CI passed on
dec88966b:pull-build,pull-check,pull-verify,pull-unit-test-cdc,pull-dm-integration-test,pull-dm-compatibility-test,pull-syncdiff-integration-test, and all four CDC integration jobs. CI is rerunning on the latest head.Known exceptions: next-gen DM integration fails on the shared downstream local-sort DDL limitation (also reproduced by unrelated PR #12904; handled separately). ERROR-log review still requires approval.
Questions
Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?
No new option. Diagnostic URLs change and HTTP access logs omit queries. Like the target database password,
dmctl config taskoutput requires storage credentials to be supplied again before reuse; OpenAPI task and template responses are unchanged. Original errors/configurations are preserved; remote storage no longer falls through to local-file cleanup. Parsing/copying adds diagnostic overhead only when a log or response is produced.Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?
No new configuration option; no separate documentation change is included.
