Use retained non-fresh checkpoints for meta_position prechecks, and ignore them when start-task will remove metadata. Read checkpoint positions without creating checkpoint tables or rewriting task configuration. Keep the existing all/relay/start-time precheck paths. Allow empty ignored meta in all-mode task configuration while retaining incremental and other validation. Add coverage for position selection, remove-meta propagation, checkpoint read failures, and empty all-mode meta.

🌐 Web query:
github.com/go-mysql-org/go-mysql v1.13.0 replication BinlogSyncer StartSync mysql.Position empty Name implementation
💡 Result:
In **go-mysql v1.13.0**, `mysql.Position` is `{Name string, Pos uint32}`. `StartSync(pos)` passes the position to `prepareSyncPos`; that method raises `Pos` to at least `4`, then sends it via the binlog-dump command. It does **not** fill in an empty `Name` or switch to GTID synchronization. ([github.com](https://github.com/go-mysql-org/go-mysql/blob/v1.13.0/mysql/position.go))
So `StartSync(mysql.Position{})` effectively requests a binlog dump with an empty filename and position `4`. The code does not document that as a supported “start from current” behavior; use an actual binlog filename and position, or `StartSyncGTID` when starting from a GTID set. One consequence of an empty filename: if the stream then errors before it has received a binlog filename, the retry path closes rather than retrying, because it checks `len(b.nextPos.Name) == 0 && b.prevGset == nil`. ([github.com](https://github.com/go-mysql-org/go-mysql/blob/v1.13.0/replication/binlogsyncer.go))

🌐 Web query:
MySQL COM_BINLOG_DUMP empty log name filename error empty binlog filename StartSync
💡 Result:
If you mean **`go-mysql`’s `BinlogSyncer.StartSync`**, it takes a `mysql.Position`—a binlog filename and position. An empty filename may therefore produce a malformed or unusable dump request; the MySQL protocol defines the filename field, but that alone doesn’t establish what the server or a particular library version does with an empty value. ([pkg.go.dev](https://pkg.go.dev/github.com/go-mysql-org/go-mysql/replication?utm_source=openai))
Check the position you pass in and use a real filename and position from the source, for example from `SHOW BINARY LOG STATUS` (or `SHOW MASTER STATUS` on versions that use that statement). MySQL’s backup guidance likewise says to use filenames that exist on the server. ([dev.mysql.com](https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/26.7/en/mysqlbinlog-backup.html?utm_source=openai))
The search results don’t establish a specific `StartSync` error for an empty filename. Share the exact error, library/MySQL versions, and the `Position` value (redacting sensitive details) to narrow it down.

Do not pass an empty binlog filename to StartSync.
When table checkpoint rows exist but the global checkpoint is fresh, metaPositionForCheck returns an empty BinLogName at position 4. The caller can still add the checker because it uses the configured metadata for its guard. In file-position mode, MetaPositionChecker.Check then passes the empty filename to StartSync. go-mysql v1.13.0 sends that empty filename in the binlog-dump request. It does not use the configured filename or switch to GTID mode. The precheck can therefore fail at the upstream or perform no meaningful position validation.
Skip the metadata position check when the returned metadata has no usable position, or handle this state explicitly.

An OpenAPI update of a stopped incremental task can omit all binlog fields.
OpenAPITaskToSubTaskConfigsthen leavesSubTaskConfig.Metanil, whileScheduler.UpdateSubTasksretains the existing checkpoint. The guard skipsmetaPositionForCheck, so the retained checkpoint is not checked. A purged checkpoint can therefore pass this validation and fail only when the task restarts.Suggested fix

What problem does this PR solve?
Issue Number: close #12195, close #11648
When an incremental task restarts with retained metadata, syncer resumes from its
checkpoint, but
meta_positionprechecks still validate the configured position. This can reject a valid restart after the old configured binlogs have been purged.
Also, all-mode tasks reject an explicitly empty
metaeven though they do not usethat configured start position.
What is changed and how it works?
Select the effective incremental start position before constructing the existing
meta-position checker:
start-task --remove-metadm/pkg/cputil.LoadSyncerCheckpoint,used by both the checker and
RemoteCheckPoint.Load. Share SQL construction, row scanning, GTID decoding and row cleanup without creating schemas/tables or
rewriting task config. Prechecks fetch only position columns; runtime loading
retains the full projection and its existing retries, metrics, failpoint,
schema restoration and safe-mode restoration.
IsFreshSyncerCheckpointbetween the checker andSyncer.IsFreshTask, including retained table checkpoints. Missing schema/table falls back only in
prechecks; runtime load still reports it. Propagate read/parse failures rather
than silently selecting config. This includes invalid table-checkpoint GTIDs,
which are now decoded by the same reader as runtime.
remove-metaintent fromStartTaskinto the checker, since metadataremoval happens after prechecks.
metafor all-mode tasks, includingmeta: {}. Keep incremental and other configuration validation unchanged.positions, missing/fresh checkpoints, read failures, remove-meta propagation,
file-only checkpoints after enabling GTID, and empty all-mode metadata.
GTIDs, error propagation and row cleanup. Add runtime regression tests for
global/table restoration, safe-mode exit points, fresh global points, retained
table points, and invalid/missing metadata.
incremental_modeintegration case: remove the entireconfigured
metabefore restarting from retained checkpoints, cover GTID andfile/position with and without relay, and verify writes made while stopped
using sync-diff. After purging binlogs, assert which source fails prechecks
with retained checkpoints versus
--remove-meta.Check List
Tests
The syncer suite uses the repository's failpoint instrumentation (without race):
Related caller compile checks and formatting:
Passed the complete
incremental_modecase using binaries built from this PR,MySQL 8.0.46 (two GTID-enabled upstream servers), and TiDB v8.5.7 (unistore),
in isolated containers with no host ports published. Source1 uses GTID and
source2 uses file/position. Both relay-enabled and relay-disabled restarts
without configured
meta, including stopped-period writes and sync-diff, pass. The final purge checks also pass with source-specific failure assertions.
Build commands (without race):
The runner's
/test-run/testsand/test-run/binlink to the worktree's testscripts and newly built artifacts;
bin/tidb-serverpoints to TiDB v8.5.7.Exact invocation:
Race tests were not run locally.
Questions
Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?
No replication hot-path change or metadata format change. Applicable incremental
prechecks perform one additional read-only checkpoint query per source (position
columns only, no
table_info). The shared runtime loader preserves its existingquery and restore behavior. Retained
checkpoints now take precedence regardless of whether the configured position is
newer or older.
--remove-metapreserves configured/default-start behavior.All-mode tasks additionally accept an empty, unused
meta.Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?
No. This restores precheck consistency with existing runtime checkpoint semantics
and does not introduce a new configuration option or monitoring metric.
