Fixes #562

Summary of Changes

Previously, Gotify notifications were delegated entirely to shoutrrr v0.8.0. However, shoutrrr's gotify service enforces a legacy validation check (len(token) == 15 && token[0] == 'A'). Gotify 3 servers issue tokens with different formats/prefixes (such as gtfya. app tokens), causing shoutrrr to reject them with invalid gotify token.

This PR introduces direct REST support for Gotify 3 and non-legacy tokens:

  1. Legacy Detection: isLegacyGotifyToken checks whether the token conforms to legacy 15-char format (A...).
  2. Gotify 3 Direct REST Dispatch: When a Gotify 3 / non-legacy token is used, sendGotifyDirect communicates directly with the Gotify /message REST API endpoint using the X-Gotify-Key header and JSON payload.
  3. Fallback Resiliency: If shoutrrr encounters an invalid gotify token error on legacy dispatch, it falls back to direct REST dispatch.
  4. Unit Tests: Added pkg/providers/gotify/gotify_test.go verifying:
    • Gotify 3 tokens (gtfya.*) dispatch correctly to /message with X-Gotify-Key and formatted message payload.
    • Non-200 responses return clean error descriptions.
    • isLegacyGotifyToken accurately distinguishes legacy and Gotify 3 tokens.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Notifications now support newer Gotify tokens while retaining support for legacy tokens.
    • Gotify notifications use HTTPS by default, with HTTP available when TLS is disabled.
    • Notifications include an optional title when provided.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved feedback when Gotify rejects a notification or delivery otherwise fails.
    • Redirects to a different host are stopped to prevent notification tokens from being forwarded elsewhere.

Support Gotify 3 tokens (e.g. gtfya.*) by posting directly to Gotify REST endpoint when non-legacy tokens are used, bypassing shoutrrr's legacy 15-char token restriction.

Walkthrough

The Gotify provider now sends non-legacy tokens through a direct JSON REST request. Legacy-shaped tokens continue to use Shoutrrr, with a direct-send fallback for an invalid gotify token error.

Changes

Gotify notification delivery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Direct REST request and response handling
pkg/providers/gotify/gotify.go, pkg/providers/gotify/gotify_test.go
The direct sender posts the message and optional title, sets X-Gotify-Key, and returns errors for request failures and non-2xx responses. Tests check request fields and an HTTP 401 response.
Token-based provider routing
pkg/providers/gotify/gotify.go, pkg/providers/gotify/gotify_test.go
The provider routes tokens by shape and falls back to direct sending when Shoutrrr returns an invalid-token error. Tests check legacy-token classification.

The new direct Gotify sender can send the token over plaintext after an HTTPS-to-HTTP redirect on the same host. It can also report success for a message that was never delivered when the server redirects with a 302. Tighten the redirect policy and its tests before merging.

Explanation

[#562] Requirement: send Gotify notifications to Gotify 3 servers that use gtfya. tokens. shoutrrr v0.8.0 rejects these tokens with invalid gotify token.

Implementation at the reviewed head (pkg/providers/gotify/gotify.go, read in full because the incremental diff blobs were unavailable):

  • isLegacyGotifyToken returns true only for 15-character tokens that start with A and contain only the allowed character set. gtfya.* tokens return false.
  • Send routes non-legacy tokens to sendGotifyDirect. That function POSTs JSON (message, title) to <scheme>://<host>[:port]/message and sets the X-Gotify-Key header to the token.
  • Legacy tokens still use shoutrrr.Send. When that call fails with invalid gotify token, the code calls sendGotifyDirect.
  • Non-2xx responses return an error that includes the HTTP status and the response body.

The change since the previous review adds redirect handling (gotifyCheckRedirect, gotifyHTTPClient). This does not change the requirement coverage above.

Automated tests: the test names in the test file summary are TestGotify_Gotify3Token, TestGotify_Gotify3Token_ErrorResponse, and TestIsLegacyGotifyToken. The test file was not read in this pass. The prior review read these tests, and no test run results are available.

The Gotify 3 behavior of X-Gotify-Key on /message is not checked against a live server. The requirement is met by the code path and the tests described above.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Changes are in pkg/providers/gotify/gotify.go and its test file, gotify_test.go.

Previous findings: the helper types and functions (gotifyPayload, gotifyHTTPClient, isLegacyGotifyToken, sendGotifyDirect), the legacy fallback on invalid gotify token, and the imports all support issue #562.

New since the previous review: redirect handling in gotifyCheckRedirect. It returns http.ErrUseLastResponse when a redirect changes the hostname. It is attached to the shared client and to the GotifyDisableTLS client. This limits where the X-Gotify-Key header is sent. Go strips only the standard sensitive headers (such as Authorization and Cookie) on cross-host redirects. X-Gotify-Key is a custom header, so Go does not strip it. The check therefore protects the token that this PR now sends directly. The check is a supporting part of the direct REST dispatch for #562, not unrelated behavior. The commit message "limit redirects" describes the same change.

The redirect tests named in the test file summary (TestGotifyCheckRedirect, TestSendGotifyDirect_FollowsSameHostRedirect, TestSendGotifyDirect_StopsCrossHostRedirect) were not read in this pass. They support the redirect behavior and do not add unrelated behavior.

Minor points that do not make a change unrelated: the Priority field in gotifyPayload is never set and is omitempty, so it is not sent. The InsecureSkipVerify transport in the GotifyDisableTLS branch applies only to the HTTP scheme, so it has no effect. Both points are redundant code, not unrelated changes.

No change alters other providers or unrelated behavior.

Reject HTTPS-to-HTTP redirects in the implementation and test.

gotifyCheckRedirect checks only the hostname. Go's http.Client can forward headers to the same host across a scheme change. Therefore, X-Gotify-Key can be sent over plaintext after an HTTPS-to-HTTP redirect.

Changing only the test would preserve the unsafe behavior. Reject downgrades while preserving same-host HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects.

Suggested fix
 	if !strings.EqualFold(req.URL.Hostname(), via[0].URL.Hostname()) {
 		return http.ErrUseLastResponse
 	}
+	if strings.EqualFold(via[0].URL.Scheme, "https") &&
+		!strings.EqualFold(req.URL.Scheme, "https") {
+		return http.ErrUseLastResponse
+	}
 	return nil

Update the test to keep the accepted same-host case on HTTPS, then assert that an HTTPS-to-HTTP redirect returns http.ErrUseLastResponse.

Reject redirects that change the request method.

sendGotifyDirect follows the 302, which Go converts from POST to GET and sends without the JSON body. If the redirect target returns 2xx, sendGotifyDirect reports success although the message was not delivered.

The test only proves that X-Gotify-Key reaches the same-host target. Use a 307/308 redirect and assert the destination receives the POST and payload, or reject method-changing redirects in gotifyCheckRedirect.

Closing this. The Gotify 3 sender is already on main from #568, and this branch still fails Test Builds because the fork has no Discord, Slack, or custom webhook secrets.
