The weight half of this is in #206. The Canodrom photograph, the one the issue names at almost 1 MB, was a PNG of a photograph: it is a JPEG now, 981 KB to 133 KB, same pixels. Two more hero photographs went the same way, and a fourth was a hand-made crop of a photograph the repository already had, so it is gone and the page that used it now crops the original through the pipeline.
What this issue still asks for is the other half, and it is not a technical decision: the carousel photographs are old and someone has to choose newer ones. Leaving it open for that.
