21st.dev marked eight 23rd components "Needs changes". The featured Ring Tower fills its stage, but these sat small in an empty box or hid their effect until you interacted. 21st also captures covers with reduced motion, so several covers showed nothing.

  • 21st/ and scripts/bundle-21st.mjs: standalone demos for Snake 404, Shader Sky, Mech Keyboard, Dither Scan, Iso Lattice, Stretchy Footer, Prompt Box and Shader Anime Fire, plus the bundler that pairs each one with its single-file build. The demos are full-bleed, follow light and dark, and show the effect in the first still frame.
  • New props:
    • Dither Scan reducedMotionProgress: holds the scan line mid-sweep.
    • Stretchy Footer peek: the aurora rests visible before any scroll.
    • Mech Keyboard defaultShortcut: seeds the recorder.
  • Snake 404: under reduced motion it starts mid-meal, and its score is larger.
  • ESLint: the Next link and img rules are off for 21st/, since those files run in 21st's sandbox.

Prompt Box isn't on main yet, so its demo is here but the component is bundled from the prompt-box branch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added interactive demos for Dither Scan, Iso Lattice, Mech Keyboard, Prompt Box, Shader Anime Fire, Shader Sky, Snake 404, and Stretchy Footer.
    • Dither Scan can hold a configurable scan-line position when reduced motion is enabled; unset, it continues to show the clean image.
    • Stretchy Footer supports a configurable resting stretch, and Mech Keyboard can display a shortcut as already saved.
    • Snake 404 now shows a reduced-motion gameplay preview, with a larger, repositioned score display.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the new Dither Scan, Stretchy Footer, and Mech Keyboard options.

21st takes one self-contained file plus one demo per component. The script
inlines each component's vanilla engine and pairs it with its demo from 21st/,
which tsconfig skips since those demos import the bundle by relative path.
reducedMotionProgress (0-1) freezes one frame with the 1-bit print ahead of the
line and the clean image behind it. Unset, reduced motion still jumps straight
to the clean image as before.
A large sunset scene with the scan line resting halfway for the cover, and
Replay tucked under the image so it never covers it.
Leads with the bar chart so the cover is a full figure, sized up to fill the
stage, with the stock color left to follow light and dark.
peek (0-1 of maxStretch) sets a resting stretch. Overscroll pulls past it and
springs back to it, and only the stretch beyond the peek lifts the page. At the
default 0 nothing changes.
A quiet site footer with the aurora peeking up from the floor, so the cover
shows the effect without anyone scrolling.
Full-bleed flames at 0.8 height, so they fill the stage instead of a strip
along the bottom. The stock palette is left unset so light and dark switch.
A full-bleed hero sky with lightning on, clear in light and stormy in dark.
They run in 21st.dev's sandbox rather than Next, so plain links and img tags
are what they should use.
Reduced motion used to park a short snake beside an untouched 404. It now
fast-forwards the autopilot until about an eighth of the digits are eaten and
stops with food ahead. The score dots are a third of a cell, two cells in.
A full not-found page: the board fills the stage, and the hint and Back home
sit below it instead of over the game.
The recorder starts on that chord, shown as saved until the next key.
The board fills most of the stage, with Cmd+K saved in the recorder and lit on
the keys so the cover shows a shortcut.
A short chat thread above the composer, with two image pills (one still
uploading), a draft and a reply in flight, so the cover shows pills, progress
and stop.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds reduced-motion and initial-state options to DitherScan, MechKeyboard, and StretchyFooter. It updates Snake404’s reduced-motion spawn and score display, adds 21st component demos, and adds a script and project settings for bundling those demos.

Changes: Component option updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
DitherScan reduced-motion frame
registry/dither-scan/*, public/r/dither-scan.json, content/docs/components/dither-scan.mdx, skills/23rd/apis.md, .cursor/skills/23rd/apis.md
reducedMotionProgress sets the scan line position for a still frame under reduced motion. The wrapper forwards option changes to the engine, and the documentation describes the clean-image default and still-frame behavior.
MechKeyboard initial shortcut
registry/mech-keyboard/mech-keyboard.tsx, content/docs/components/mech-keyboard.mdx, skills/23rd/apis.md, .cursor/skills/23rd/apis.md
defaultShortcut initializes the chord as saved when it contains codes. The prop is documented in the component docs and API references.
StretchyFooter resting stretch
registry/stretchy-footer/*, public/r/stretchy-footer.json, content/docs/components/stretchy-footer.mdx, skills/23rd/apis.md, .cursor/skills/23rd/apis.md
peek sets the resting stretch as a fraction of maxStretch. Retargeting, content lift, and reduced-motion settling use the resting amount.

Snake404 reduced-motion presentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Spawn state and demo
registry/snake-404/snake-404-vanilla.ts, public/r/snake-404.json, 21st/snake-404.demo.tsx
Reduced-motion spawns can fast-forward autopilot movement to show part of the code eaten. If the simulation dies during fast-forward, it respawns without fast-forwarding. The score dots and position change, and the new demo renders configurable Snake404 settings.

21st component demos

Layer / File(s) Summary
Visual and component demos
21st/dither-scan.demo.tsx, 21st/iso-lattice.demo.tsx, 21st/shader-anime-fire.demo.tsx, 21st/shader-sky.demo.tsx, 21st/stretchy-footer.demo.tsx
The demos render DitherScan, IsoLattice, ShaderAnimeFire, ShaderSky, and StretchyFooter with configurable settings.
PromptBox and keyboard demos
21st/prompt-box.demo.tsx, 21st/mech-keyboard.demo.tsx
The PromptBox demo simulates uploads and assistant replies. The MechKeyboard demo sets a shortcut and adjusts scale based on the window aspect ratio.
Demo bundling and project settings
scripts/bundle-21st.mjs, eslint.config.mjs, tsconfig.json
The bundling script writes selected component and demo files to an output directory. ESLint overrides and TypeScript exclusions apply to 21st files.

21st.dev CLI component demo external npm dependencies import lucide-react preview dependency metadata

💡 Result:

If you mean **“Will an external import such as `lucide-react` work in a 21st.dev CLI component demo, and where do I declare it?”**: declare every imported npm package in the component’s nearest `package.json`. The current CLI’s publish build validates dependencies and builds both the component and demo; undeclared packages or unresolved imports can fail that check. ([github.com](https://github.com/21st-dev/skill/blob/main/skills/21st-registry/SKILL.md?utm_source=openai))

For example, if the component or demo imports `lucide-react`, add it as a dependency in that `package.json`. The CLI review provides a live demo preview, but the available guidance doesn’t specify exactly how dependency metadata is displayed in the preview UI. ([github.com](https://github.com/21st-dev/skill/blob/main/skills/21st-registry/SKILL.md?utm_source=openai))

One version caveat: the current CLI guidance says its publish command sends **one component file and one demo**; it does not accept extra local files or `21st.json` in that flow. A separate registry CLI documents a `21st.json` format, so don’t assume that format applies to the current `@21st-dev/cli` publish command. ([github.com](https://github.com/21st-dev/skill/blob/main/skills/21st-registry/SKILL.md?utm_source=openai))

Declare lucide-react for the 21st demo.

The 21st publish build validates dependencies and builds both the component and demo. 21st/dither-scan.demo.tsx:4 imports lucide-react, but the nearest package.json does not declare it. The bundler copies that import unchanged and emits no dependency metadata. The 21st build can therefore fail to resolve the demo import.

Complete the initial reply.

The default busy setting starts replying as true. The seeded thread also ends with a user message. This guard skips its reply, so the demo shows “Replying” indefinitely until the user stops it. Let the initial message receive a timed reply, or end the initial busy state explicitly.

Wrap image rows on narrow screens.

The images setting allows six attachments. After a user sends them, this single flex row can exceed a narrow conversation width and require horizontal scrolling to see every image. Add wrapping to the sent-image row.

Bound reduced-motion fast-forward work before the first frame.

When reduced motion is enabled, the initial resize() calls layout(), which calls spawn(). spawn() then runs fastForward() synchronously before the first draw(). On a 3840×2160 canvas with cellSize={10}, the loop permits up to 165,888 iterations, and each plan() can make autopilot() traverse the reachable grid. Bound total search work, or generate the still frame without simulating the full run.

Settle the spring when reduced motion becomes active.

Exclude Prompt Box from the default main-branch bundle.

The no-slug command includes prompt-box.demo.tsx, but registry/prompt-box/prompt-box.tsx is absent. publishedFileContent calls readFileSync for that path, so the default command fails when it processes Prompt Box. Exclude Prompt Box from the default list until its wrapper is available, or make the branch requirement explicit.

Review comment at @scripts/bundle-21st.mjs around lines 22 - 26:
Update the default slug list in the `slugs` fallback so it excludes `prompt-box`
until its wrapper is available; keep explicitly selected slugs unchanged.
