    Notably, the rust_object_store regression only reproduces with cargo build, but not with cargo check

    Bisection output with cargo bisect-rustc --start=1.99.0 --end=beta -- build:

    Regressed in #161789. Notably this is a cargo submodule update, but isn't the one which involved the build dir v2 change.

    Minimal reproducer: repro.zip

    This reproducer also reproduces the problem with cargo check. However, the original code needs cargo build to reproduce. I'm not sure why.

    I don't think crate-type = ["lib"] with proc-macro = true is supposed to be a legal combination.

    Cargo.toml

    [package]
    name = "foo"
    version = "0.1.0"
    edition = "2021"

    [lib]
    crate-type = ["lib"]
    proc-macro = true

    [dependencies]
    dep = { path = "./dep" }

    src/lib.rs

    use dep as _;

    src/main.rs

    use foo as _;

    fn main() {}

    An empty library crate is at ./dep.

    Note: In the original code, this "proc macro" crate in the original code also exported non-proc-macro stuff

    Created a cargo side issue: rust-lang/cargo#17579

    This is indeed a separate regression.
