I still don't get why it is that important. We know the CQL type during serialization.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
We purposely don't perform any type checks during serialization. The CPP Driver's design, which we reflected in CPP RS, is: type check upon binding, don't check types upon serialization. Make the values know its type.
We could change this design, but this is out of scope of this PR.

The function converts rust-driver's `NativeType` into the C API's `CassValueType`. That is exactly what `From` expresses, so the conversion reads better as a trait impl, and the call site becomes `native.into()`. No behaviour changes.

Slightly off-topic:
I think we have the same code (serializing to a separate buffer) in Rust Driver as well, right?
If so, I wonder: can varint encoding be denormalized? In other words, smaller values extended to be encoded by more bytes?
If so, we could essentially make it a constant-length encoding, and drop the separate buffer.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I don't get it. But you're welcome to open an issue in Rust Driver.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
To explain a bit more (because the fix will need to be both in Rust Driver, and here, because this PR re-implements the serialization logic):
We need to first serialize the element to a separate buffer (element_buffer), because length is preceding the element in the final buffer, and the length itself is variable-length. If we made the length constant-size using denormalize varints (if such a thing exists), we could serialize element directly to builder and not create element_buffer.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
But let's tackle this some other time, not in this PR.

A vector's data type is what makes a vector usable at all: its element type decides how the elements are encoded on the wire, and its number of dimensions is part of the type rather than of the value. It therefore comes first, before the vector type that is built on top of it. `cass_data_type_new_vector()` builds such a type. `cass_data_type_new()` refuses to: a vector needs both its element type and its dimensions upfront, and no function adds either to an existing data type. The element type must be fully specified. A missing subtype is a wildcard in `typecheck_equals()`, so a vector of an untyped list would match a column of any list element type. A collection can be built untyped, for compatibility with cpp-driver. A vector has no such legacy form, so it does not get one. `cass_data_type_vector_dimensions()` reads the number of dimensions back. Result metadata now maps a vector column to that data type, so vector columns stop being reported as `CASS_VALUE_TYPE_UNKNOWN`.
ScyllaDB supports the `vector<type, dimensions>` CQL type, but the driver had no way to express it. Rust Driver already supports it, so the work is confined to the C API layer. A vector gets its own type, `CassVector`, modelled after `CassTuple`. It is not served by `CassCollection`. The reason is the shape of the API: - A collection grows. The user appends to it with `cass_collection_append_*()`, and its items fill in order. - A vector has a fixed number of slots. The user fills them by position with `cass_vector_set_*()`, and can set slot 2 before slot 0. A collection has no way to hold a partly filled, positional buffer. A tuple has, which is why the vector API follows it. ScyllaDB makes the same separation. `vector_type_impl` derives from `concrete_type`, not from `collection_type_impl`, so `is_collection()` is false for a vector, and `is_vector()` sits beside `is_tuple()`. Only a collection or a UDT can be multi-cell, so a vector is always one cell. Rust Driver states it in one line: "Tuple and vector are not collections because they have predefined size." Contrary to a collection or a tuple, a vector is always fully typed. A value in this driver is self-describing: `SerializeValue::serialize()` ignores the column type it receives and writes the value on its own, as cpp-driver does. A collection manages that without knowing its element type, because its wire format carries an element count and a length prefix per element. A vector's format carries neither, and the element type decides whether an element gets a length prefix at all. `cass_vector_new()` therefore takes a native element type and builds the data type itself. For any other element type (a UDT, a tuple, a collection or another vector), build the data type and use `cass_vector_new_from_data_type()`. `cass_vector_data_type()` exposes the type of a vector.
`cass_vector_set_*()` mirrors `cass_tuple_set_*()`, with two differences that follow from what a vector is: - there is no `cass_vector_set_null()`: a vector's elements cannot be null, and an element left unset is rejected upon serialization; - every value is typechecked against the vector's element type, because a vector is always fully typed. This is also where a vector first becomes a value that can be serialized: `cass_vector_set_vector()` puts a vector inside a vector. The wire format of a vector differs from the one of a collection - there is no element count, elements of a fixed-size type are written raw with no length prefix, and elements of a variable-size type are prefixed with an unsigned vint length - so `serialize_vector()` implements it, mirroring rust-driver's own implementation.
`cass_tuple_set_vector()` completes the set of values a tuple can hold.
`cass_collection_append_vector()` lets a list, set or map hold vectors. Note that this is a vector *inside* a collection - a vector is not itself a collection, and so it is not created by `cass_collection_new()`.
`cass_user_type_set_vector()`, and its by-name variants, let a user defined type hold vector fields.
`cass_statement_bind_vector()`, and its by-name variants, are what makes vectors usable in queries at all. For prepared statements the bound vector is typechecked against the column's data type, so a vector of the wrong element type or of the wrong number of dimensions is rejected before the request is sent.
`cass_iterator_from_vector()` iterates over a vector's elements. A vector gets an iterator of its own, rather than being served by `cass_iterator_from_collection()`, which keeps rejecting it - just as `cass_value_is_collection()` keeps returning false for it. `cass_value_item_count()` reports a vector's number of elements, taken from its type: contrary to a collection, a vector has no element count in the frame. `cass_value_primary_sub_type()` reports its element type.
The unit tests of the previous commits check each API against rust-driver's own serializer, without a server. These tests drive a real cluster instead, through the C API, and prove that a vector survives a round trip. - `tests/src/integration/tests/test_vector.cpp` covers a vector of a fixed-size element type, a vector of a variable-size one, a prepared statement, and the schema metadata of a vector column. - `ccm::data_types` gains a `vector<text, 1>` column, so that a vector is checked beside every other container that the `text` typecheck affects. - `ccm::vector_nesting` puts a vector in a list, in a tuple and in three UDT fields, and reads each of them back. The `Makefile` runs the C++ suite for both ScyllaDB and Cassandra.
An example of using the CQL vector type: `vector_insert_select` shows plain insertion and reading back of a vector column. It is built as part of the normal examples build, so that it cannot rot, and the CI runs it.
- add `vector` -> `CassVector` to the datatype mapping table, which was the only CQL type missing from it; - add a `vectors` page next to the tuples and UDT ones, covering what cannot be guessed from the header: that the element type and the number of dimensions are fixed at construction, that elements cannot be null, that a vector is not a collection (and so has an iterator of its own), and how an ANN query binds its query vector; - mention vectors where the data types page explains building composite values from data types. The API reference page for `CassVector` needs no new file: `docs/source/conf.py` generates one per struct found in doxygen's output.

vectorcolumn, and noway to read one. The protocol has no option id for a vector: a vector column
arrives as a custom type, named
org.apache.cassandra.db.marshal.VectorType(<element>, <dimensions>). RustDriver parses that into a vector column type, but this driver had no data type
to map it to, so it reported
CASS_VALUE_TYPE_UNKNOWN.Issue #415 proposed to reach such a column through
cass_statement_bind_custom*().This PR adds a typed
CassVectorAPI instead. A vector column now has theCASS_VALUE_TYPE_VECTORdata type. Thecass_*_custom*functions stayunimplemented, and we do not plan to implement them.

Fixes: #415
The
CassVectortypeA vector gets its own type,
CassVector, modelled afterCassTuple. It is notserved by
CassCollection. The reason is the shape of the API:cass_collection_append_*(),and its items fill in order.
cass_vector_set_*(), and can set slot 2 before slot 0.A collection has no way to hold a partly filled, positional buffer. A tuple has.
ScyllaDB makes the same separation.
vector_type_implderives fromconcrete_type, not fromcollection_type_impl. Thusis_collection()isfalse for a vector, and
is_vector()sits besideis_tuple(). Only acollection or a UDT can be multi-cell, so a vector is always one cell.
cass_vector_new()andcass_vector_new_from_data_type()create a vector.cass_data_type_new_vector()andcass_data_type_vector_dimensions()handle the data type.cass_vector_set_*()functions set one element at an index.cass_iterator_from_vector()reads the elements back.Vectors in other types
A vector can be a value in another container. These functions put one there:
cass_statement_bind_vector(), and the two by-name forms.cass_collection_append_vector().cass_tuple_set_vector().cass_user_type_set_vector(), and the two by-name forms.The
CASS_VALUE_TYPE_VECTORvalueThe protocol has no option id for a vector.
CASS_VALUE_TYPE_VECTORis thus adriver-local number. The driver never reads it from the wire, and never writes
it there.
The value is
0x5356. The protocol assigns its ids from the bottom up, and hasreached
0x0031.0x5356is far above that range, so a future protocolversion is unlikely to take it. The bytes spell "SV" in ASCII:
0x53isS,for ScyllaDB, and
0x56isV, for vector.0x53xxis thus the space forScyllaDB-specific value types.
CASS_VALUE_TYPE_LAST_ENTRYfollows it. A C enumerator with no value of itsown takes the value of the one before it, plus one.
CASS_VALUE_TYPE_VECTORis declared last, so
CASS_VALUE_TYPE_LAST_ENTRYis0x5357, not0x0032.It stays above every value type, which is all the driver asks of it.
Serialization
The wire format of a vector has no element count. Thus, the element encoding depends on the element type:
A nested vector of a fixed-size type is itself of a fixed size. Thus, the test is recursive.
uses_variable_length_encoding_in_vector()makes this decision.A vector needs a fully typed element
cass_data_type_new_vector()now rejects an element type that is not fully specified.typecheck_equalstreats a missing subtype as a wildcard.Tests
The tests are in three places:
produces against rust-driver's own serializer. Each commit that adds an API
adds the tests for it.
scylla-rust-wrapper/tests/integration/ccm/.They drive a real cluster through the C API.
tests/src/integration/tests/test_vector.cpp.Every one of the 34 public vector functions has at least one test. The table
