Description

Iris의 progress 메시지를 받아 채점 진행률을 WebSocket으로 push하는 서버(apps/progress)를 추가

  • 백엔드와 같은 exchange(iris.e.direct.judge)에 별도 큐를 bind해 메시지 복사본을 받습니다.

Additional context

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a Progress Server that consumes validated Iris progress events from RabbitMQ, tracks progress by submission, and sends updates and available snapshots to WebSocket subscribers.

Changes

Progress Server

Layer / File(s) Summary
Progress event contract and ingestion
apps/progress/src/types.ts, apps/progress/src/rabbitConsumer.ts, apps/progress/package.json, apps/progress/tsconfig.json
Defines progress event types and payload validation. Consumes RabbitMQ messages, acknowledges non-progress messages, and rejects invalid or failed messages without requeueing. Adds package scripts, dependencies, and TypeScript settings.
Submission progress state
apps/progress/src/progressStore.ts
Tracks distinct progress currents, derives submission status and update messages, returns snapshots, and schedules cleanup for finished or idle submissions.
WebSocket subscriptions and server wiring
apps/progress/src/wsServer.ts, apps/progress/src/server.ts, apps/progress/README.md
Starts the RabbitMQ consumer and WebSocket server. Sends available snapshots to subscribers and broadcasts store updates. Documents message handling, protocol, startup commands, and environment defaults.

Ordinary judging will not deliver progress updates with the current Iris publisher. Connect a progress producer before merging, and address the consumer’s failure handling and remaining configuration and resource risks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 38660

The new WebSocket service accepts submission subscriptions without checking client identity or submission access, and one connected client can accumulate unbounded subscriptions. It also uses known RabbitMQ credentials when configuration is missing. Exposure is limited to progress metadata and the new service; production network isolation and broker permissions are not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new WebSocket path uses a client-supplied submissionId directly for snapshots and broadcasts without authentication or submission-access authorization. Any client able to reach the listener can request available progress metadata for arbitrary IDs. Existing backend submission reads apply user, role, and contest/assignment visibility rules, but this separate path carries none of that context. External enforcement is not established; the exposed payload does not include submission code or full judging results.
  • Medium · security · inferred: A reachable client can repeatedly subscribe to distinct integer IDs, including nonexistent submissions, growing both connection-local and global subscription collections without an application-level cap. Store expiry does not release these registrations, and terminal broadcasts do not clear the connection-local ID set. Disconnect and unsubscribe provide cleanup, but a client retaining its connection can continue accumulating entries, creating a service-wide memory-exhaustion path independent of valid progress production.
  • Low · security · observed: The added service substitutes documented local RabbitMQ credentials whenever either credential variable is absent, without restricting that fallback to development, and passes the resulting URL to the broker connection. This extends known-credential fallback into the new service rather than failing closed on missing production configuration. The default host is localhost, and no evidence establishes that a production broker accepts these credentials or what authority they would grant.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The client attack scope is every progress snapshot or stream available in a reachable process, without a user, group, contest, or assignment partition at subscription time. Resource exhaustion can affect all clients sharing that process, even without a working progress producer. Broker/data-store compromise, privilege escalation, and Internet exposure are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained security finding is corroborated: missing credential variables become known local values, the constructed URL reaches startProgressConsumer, and amqp.connect uses it. No production-mode check intervenes. Local-development documentation and localhost defaults limit the conclusion to insecure fallback; successful unauthorized broker access is not proven.
  • observed — A WebSocket client supplies an integer submissionId, which directly selects a snapshot and subscriber group. Available updates are sent without an identity or access-policy check. The attack requires listener reachability and, for disclosure, matching progress state; upstream authentication or isolation could constrain it but is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Payload shape, recognized status codes, and integer identifiers are validated. These controls reject malformed input but do not authorize subscriptions. The existing submission API receives authenticated user/role context and applies conditional access and result-visibility rules; the progress path neither invokes those checks nor carries equivalent context.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Repeated subscriptions to one ID are deduplicated; unsubscribe, disconnect, and terminal broadcasts remove global registrations. However, unknown IDs are admitted without a bound, terminal delivery leaves connection-local IDs retained, and state expiry does not prune subscriber ownership. Cleanup therefore does not contain accumulation by a client that remains connected.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind WebSocket identity to submission-access policy before sending snapshots or registering subscriptions, or use a short-lived submission-scoped capability issued through the existing authorized backend. Enforce the chosen control at every reachable ingress rather than assuming numeric IDs or network placement provide authorization.
  • proposed — Bound per-connection subscriptions and message admission, expire pending subscriptions, and coordinate terminal/expiry cleanup across connection-local and global collections. This would contain one client's resource use independently of broker activity.
  • proposed — Restrict local broker defaults to an explicit development configuration and reject missing production credentials before opening the listener. Establish transport and least-privilege broker requirements for the new consumer without assuming the existing credential grants are appropriately scoped.

apps/progress/src/rabbitConsumer.ts (1)

17-17: Reject a missing messageId explicitly.

Number(undefined) is NaN, and Number('') is 0. Both fail the later check, so the behavior is correct. The code relies on this implicitly, so no change is required.

apps/progress/src/progressStore.ts (1)

36-38: total and lastStatusCode change on every event.

Events can arrive out of order. If an error status code arrives and a later event with a different code follows, the earlier error is only kept until the next event. The status is computed from lastStatusCode only. Because status is final once it is not judging, this is safe. No change is required.

apps/progress/src/wsServer.ts (2)

76-85: A race can leave a subscriber waiting forever.

The snapshot check and addSubscriber run in one synchronous callback, so no event can interleave. This path is correct. A subscriber for a submission with no state yet waits until the first event arrives. This is the intended behavior.

108-110: Final-state cleanup does not update subscribedIds.

subscribers.delete removes the set, but each connection still holds the ID in subscribedIds. On close, removeSubscriber finds no set and returns. This is safe. A later re-subscribe after done receives the snapshot only. No change is required.

apps/progress/src/server.ts (1)

18-34: Shut down cleanly on startup failure.

If startProgressConsumer throws, process.exit(1) runs while the WebSocket server is open. This is acceptable because the process ends. No change is required.

amqplib official API connection error close channel error close ack nack closed channel behavior

💡 Result:

## amqplib behavior

- **Connection `error` → `close`:** A connection emits `error` for unexpected failures such as network/server errors or missed heartbeats, then emits `close`. A graceful server shutdown can emit `close` without `error`. Handle both events; unhandled Node.js `error` events can terminate the process. ([amqp-node.github.io](https://amqp-node.github.io/amqplib/channel_api.html))
- **Channel `error` → `close`:** A broker-closed channel emits `error` and then `close`, for example after a failed precondition. A channel does **not** emit `error` just because its connection closed, but it does emit `close`. Pending operations are abandoned, and their promises reject. ([amqp-node.github.io](https://amqp-node.github.io/amqplib/channel_api.html))
- **`ack` / `nack`:** These methods return no promise and accept no callback, so there’s no per-call error result to catch. Acknowledging a message that needs no ack, was already acknowledged, or is no longer outstanding is a channel-level error; the channel can be closed. Unacknowledged messages may be requeued when the channel closes. ([amqp-node.github.io](https://amqp-node.github.io/amqplib/channel_api.html))
- **Calling `ack` / `nack` on an already-closed channel:** The API reference says operations after channel failure/closure throw, with `stackAtStateChange` available on the exception. Since `ack`/`nack` have no promise or callback, guard against using a closed channel and handle the channel’s `error`/`close` events. ([amqp-node.github.io](https://amqp-node.github.io/amqplib/channel_api.html))

**Recovery:** For a channel failure, create a new channel and re-establish consumers; for a connection failure, reconnect, recreate channels, and re-establish consumers. ([amqp-node.github.io](https://amqp-node.github.io/amqplib/))

These are the official API reference’s documented behaviors; exact runtime details may vary by installed amqplib version.

Handle AMQP connection and channel failures.

The consumer has no error or close handlers. A connection error can cause an unhandled error event. A clean connection close, or a channel close, can leave the WebSocket server running without progress consumption. main().catch(...) handles startup failures only.

amqplib also documents that ack and nack operations can throw after the channel closes. Add handlers for both the connection and the consumer channel, then terminate the process so a configured supervisor can restart it.

Wire a reachable progress producer to the consumer.

The repository's ordinary Iris judging flow publishes only normal result messages. The consumer acknowledges those messages and ignores them because their AMQP type is not progress. They therefore cannot trigger a WebSocket update.

Add an Iris progress publishing branch, or connect a repository-owned producer, that sends AMQP type progress, the submission ID in messageId, and the required { total, current, statusCode } body.

Require RabbitMQ credentials in production.

When NODE_ENV is production, missing credentials currently fall back to the known values skku and 1234. This hides configuration errors and can permit authentication if the broker accepts those defaults. Keep the defaults only outside production, or fail before constructing the URL.

The WebSocket server accepts any origin and has no limits.

new WebSocketServer({ port }) accepts every origin and has no maxPayload or per-connection subscription limit. The default maxPayload is 100 MiB. A client can send large messages or subscribe to many IDs and use memory. The endpoint exposes only progress data and uses no cookies, so the cross-site hijacking risk is low. Set a small maxPayload (for example 1 KiB) and cap subscribedIds.size.
