fix: return 0 or 1 from Chi and Gamma cdf/sf when the argument under/overflows - #475
Chi::cdf/sf pass x * x / 2.0 and Gamma::cdf/sf pass x * self.rate to gamma_lr/gamma_ur, which panic (via checked_* returning XInvalid) when that argument is 0 or infinite. The guards before the call only look at x, so a finite, valid x can still panic:

ChiSquared and Erlang delegate to Gamma, so they are fixed too (e.g. ChiSquared::new(3).cdf(5e-324) panicked).
As discussed below:
gamma_lr(a, 0) and gamma_ur(a, 0) now return their limits, 0 and 1, instead of XInvalid (so do gamma_li/gamma_ui, which go through them). An infinite x is still rejected, so Chi and Gamma keep a guard for the product overflowing.
Chi::cdf uses the leading series term (x^2/2)^(k/2) / Gamma(k/2 + 1) in log space once x * x / 2 drops below f64::MIN_POSITIVE; for k = 1 that matches erf(x / sqrt(2)).
Tests are in test_cdf/test_sf/test_neg_* in chi.rs, next to test_cdf_at_zero in the Gamma distribution and next to the x bound tests in function/gamma.rs. cargo test, cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --all-targets, cargo check --no-default-features --lib and cargo +1.89.0 check --lib pass. I did not run the cargo hack or cross-target jobs. InverseGamma (at 5e-324) and FisherSnedecor (at f64::MAX) have similar panics through other functions and are not touched here.
Written with AI assistance (Claude); I have reviewed the change.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved chi and gamma distribution probability calculations for extreme values, including cases where intermediate calculations underflow or overflow.
Incomplete gamma functions now accept zero as an input while continuing to reject negative and positive-infinite values.
Added coverage for boundary cases, including negative infinity and zero, and improved results when scaled inputs exceed the representable range.
…overflows
Chi passes x * x / 2 and Gamma passes x * rate to gamma_lr/gamma_ur,
which panic when their argument is 0 or infinite. The existing guards
only checked x itself, so a finite x whose product overflowed or
underflowed panicked. ChiSquared and Erlang go through Gamma.

Walkthrough
Incomplete gamma functions now accept zero as input. Chi and Gamma distribution CDF and survival functions handle intermediate underflow and overflow with endpoint probabilities. Tests cover these cases, including negative infinity for Chi.
Changes: Gamma and distribution endpoints
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Incomplete gamma zero input src/function/gamma.rs
Incomplete gamma functions accept x = 0. Lower functions return 0 and upper functions return 1 at that boundary. Validation and error descriptions now reject negative or infinite x.
Chi endpoint handling src/distribution/chi.rs
Chi CDF and survival functions handle underflow and overflow in x squared. Tests cover tiny and huge inputs, and negative infinity.
Gamma endpoint handling src/distribution/gamma.rs
Gamma CDF and survival functions handle overflow and underflow in x multiplied by rate. Tests cover the resulting endpoint values.
Valid but extreme Gamma inputs can return substantially incorrect CDF and survival probabilities; preserve the positive product before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to bd26b
The change fixes crashes for extreme inputs, but some valid inputs can now receive a silently incorrect probability instead. No security-sensitive use of these results has been established.
Retained concerns
Medium · architecture · inferred: Equating an underflowed intermediate with a zero mathematical argument makes public CDF and survival methods return exact endpoints for some valid inputs with non-endpoint probabilities. It replaces the prior panic with an apparently successful but incorrect result.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A caller able to select accepted extreme numerical inputs can reach the changed results through Gamma or Chi and, through delegation, ChiSquared or Erlang. Application-level exposure is not established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The changed guards intercept rounded endpoint arguments before the incomplete-gamma helpers reject them. The inspected methods do not identify an authorization or identity control that consumes the result.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Preserve sufficient information about a positive argument when its intermediate floating-point representation underflows, so endpoint handling can distinguish a truly rounded endpoint probability from a lost intermediate.

The title names the two main areas changed (Chi and Gamma cdf/sf) and the core behavior (returning 0 or 1 when the argument under- or overflows). The raw summary and PR objectives confirm these are the main changes. The title omits the secondary change to the incomplete gamma functions accepting x = 0, which is acceptable because the title does not need to cover every detail.

I'd argue this motivates a change to the gamma functions for smaller x instead of making the change here.
These are pretty extreme parameters, so perhaps they need extreme care, thoughts?
I'd expect that is part of work I've not gotten to merging yet from @agene0001 atop work from @day01 on causing outright over/underflow related issues in intermediates.
Agreed that the extreme cases need more care. Two things I found while checking:
gamma_lr/gamma_ur reject x = 0 and x = inf by contract: they return XInvalid, and test_gamma_lr_x_upper_bound / test_checked_gamma_lr_x_upper_bound (src/function/gamma.rs) assert it. So moving the fix into the gamma functions means changing that public behavior to return the limits (0/1). I'm happy to do it that way if you prefer it. The guards in Chi/Gamma would then go away.
Small x in Chi is a separate problem from the gamma functions. In Chi::new(1).cdf(1e-200), x * x / 2.0 has already underflowed to 0 before gamma_lr sees it. Neither version returns the true value, about 7.98e-201 (erf(x/sqrt(2))). Keeping it would need the leading series term in log space inside Chi (k·ln x − (k/2)·ln 2 − ln Γ(k/2 + 1)). That is also what the CodeRabbit note asks for.
I looked through the open PRs from @agene0001 and @day01 (#416, #418, #421) and didn't see the x = 0/inf contract change. #421's ln_cdf is the closest. So one option is to drop this PR in favor of that work. The other is that I change it to (1), plus (2) for Chi if you want it. Which do you prefer?
Thanks @day01. Since (1) changes what gamma_lr/gamma_ur return for x = 0 and x = inf (they return XInvalid today and two tests assert that), I would like @YeungOnion to confirm before I push it. If that is fine, I will do (1) and (2) together in this PR.
I would also like (2), less sure about (1) because passing float inf at an API surface seems like the user would have opted a different call site or used the closed form for the limit. It comes from a place of clients not designing for fp math.
For x=0, I think it's good.
Could be overthinking it, so if you read it and still think, I would expect this API to not tell me, "hey, since the limit of this function has a closed form, you can't use this." , then I'm happy to call that usage-driven feedback and allow float inf.
… tiny x
gamma_lr(a, 0) and gamma_ur(a, 0) now return their limits, 0 and 1, instead
of XInvalid; an infinite x is still rejected. The Gamma distribution no
longer needs its own guard for x * rate underflowing to 0.
Chi::cdf passes x * x / 2, which loses precision below f64::MIN_POSITIVE
(Chi::new(1).cdf(1e-200) gave 0, the true value is about 7.98e-201). There
it now uses the leading series term (x^2 / 2)^(k/2) / Gamma(k/2 + 1) in log
space.
Pushed 5ff489d with (2) and the x = 0 half of (1): gamma_lr/gamma_ur return 0/1 at x = 0, and x = inf is still XInvalid, so Chi and Gamma keep their overflow guard. Chi::new(1).cdf(1e-200) now gives 7.978845608028654e-201 instead of 0; the test checks it against x * sqrt(2 / pi) with a relative tolerance and fails without the series branch.
Preserve positive CDF and survival values when x * rate underflows.
Gamma::new(0.5, 0.5) accepts the parameters. For x = f64::from_bits(1), x is positive and finite, but x * rate rounds to 0.0. cdf then returns gamma_lr(0.5, 0.0) == 0.0, while the mathematical CDF is approximately 1.77e-162.
The existing underflow test uses shape = 1.0, where zero is the correctly rounded CDF. Add a small-argument log-domain path at this distribution boundary. Preserve gamma_lr(a, 0.0) == 0.0 and gamma_ur(a, 0.0) == 1.0; those are valid endpoint results.

Review comment at @src/distribution/gamma.rs at line 155:
Update the Gamma CDF and survival-function paths to detect a positive finite x
whose product with rate underflows to zero, and compute the small-argument
result in the log domain so positive values are preserved. Keep the existing
gamma_lr and gamma_ur endpoint behavior unchanged for an actual zero argument.
