fix: keep Cauchy pdf and ln_pdf finite when the denominator overflows - #481
pdf and ln_pdf formed pi * scale * (1 + z^2) as one product; once that overflows the density came back as 0 and the log as -inf, even though both are representable (far tail of the standard cauchy past about 7.6e153, and every x once scale is above about 5.7e307).
the existing expression is still used whenever it is finite, so results in the normal range are bit for bit unchanged; only when it overflows does it fall back to forming 1 / (pi scale) first and, past |z| = 1, working in 1 / z (for ln_pdf, summing the logs).
no change to public api; numerical results change only where the old code returned 0 / -inf.
added test_pdf_far_tail_and_huge_scale with the values from the issue; cargo test passes (837 + 195 doc).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved Cauchy distribution density calculations for extreme values, helping preserve valid results when inputs or scale parameters are very large.
Improved accuracy for representable densities in the distribution’s far tails.
Reduced overflow-related inaccuracies in density results for extreme finite values, while retaining appropriate behavior for infinite inputs.
Cauchy::pdf and Cauchy::ln_pdf now use overflow-safe fallback calculations when their direct denominators overflow. A private helper computes distance terms for those calculations. Tests cover extreme inputs and scales.

Summary
Overflow fallbacks and regression tests src/distribution/cauchy.rs
A private helper computes scaled distance terms when subtracting finite inputs would overflow. pdf and ln_pdf retain direct calculations for finite denominators and use separate fallback formulas for different distance magnitudes when denominators overflow. Tests cover far-tail values, extreme and subnormal scales, overflowing distances, and infinite inputs.
The calculations have no established failure, but a finite-offset regression test would better protect the huge-scale fix. This is a bounded follow-up rather than a demonstrated merge blocker.

Explanation
The title names the main change: Cauchy pdf and ln_pdf stay finite when the denominator overflows. The raw summary confirms the change adds a tail_parts helper and fallback formulas to pdf and ln_pdf in src/distribution/cauchy.rs, and the linked issue #472 asks for the same fix. The title is specific and does not conflict with the changeset. It omits the far-tail and extreme-scale detail, which the title does not need to cover.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 1 files.

- Line 267: Update the Cauchy density calculation using `c` so the tail path
avoids forming the overflowing reciprocal scale factor; compute the density with
an algebraically equivalent ordering that stays finite for the stated inputs and
returns a value near 1 / π.
- Line 259: Update the z calculation in the Cauchy PDF and ln_pdf paths to
handle subtraction and division overflow without treating an overflowed
intermediate as an infinite input; preserve representable tiny densities and
finite log densities when the mathematical result is finite.

the fallback now works from r = scale / (x - x_0) and scale / (x - x_0)^2,
halving x and x_0 when their difference overflows, so a tiny or subnormal
scale or a huge location no longer turns a finite density into 0 or inf.

Add a finite-offset assertion for the r.abs() >= 1.0 fallback.
The current huge-scale assertions use x == location, so z == 0 and the 1 + z * z factor equals 1. The existing wide-location case exercises the other fallback branch.
Add x == 5e307 with scale == 1e308. This produces finite r == 2 and requires the nontrivial factor 1.25 in both pdf and ln_pdf.

Review comment at @src/distribution/cauchy.rs around lines 581 - 583:
Add finite-offset assertions to the wide-scale test for `wide.pdf` and
`wide.ln_pdf` at `x == 5e307`, verifying the nontrivial 1.25 factor when the
standardized offset is 2; retain the existing zero-offset assertions.
