fix: keep Cauchy::inverse_cdf accurate in the lower tail - #482
inverse_cdf computed tan(pi (p - 1/2)); p - 1/2 rounds away p once it drops below 2^-55, so every lower quantile collapsed to -1.633e16 and digits were lost for many decades above that.
it now uses the identity tan(pi (p - 1/2)) = -1 / tan(pi p), with 1 - p for the upper half (exact for p >= 1/2 by sterbenz), and returns the location exactly at p = 1/2.
behaviour change: inverse_cdf(0.0) and inverse_cdf(1.0) now return -inf / +inf, matching Min / Max for Cauchy, instead of a finite saturation value. other quantiles move by at most rounding.
added test_inverse_cdf_lower_tail, which fails on main; cargo test passes (837 + 195 doc).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved Cauchy distribution quantile accuracy for very small lower-tail probabilities, including subnormal values.
Quantiles now handle median and probability endpoint values explicitly, and use more reliable calculations for lower and upper tails.
Cauchy::inverse_cdf now handles the median and probability endpoints explicitly. It computes lower and upper tail quantiles with reciprocal tangent forms and uses a small-probability approximation. Tests cover small and subnormal probabilities, subnormal scale, and representative quantiles.

Summary
Quantile calculation and regression coverage src/distribution/cauchy.rs
The inverse CDF returns the location at the median, handles probability endpoints, and uses reciprocal tangent forms for lower and upper probabilities. For probabilities below 1e-9, it uses a small-probability approximation with operation ordering that accounts for subnormal scale. Tests cover tail probabilities down to 1e-300, endpoints, subnormal inputs, and representative quantiles.
Lower-tail precision improves, but some extreme inputs and near-median quantiles remain inaccurate. The change is mergeable with awareness of these edge cases.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #471 requires accurate lower-tail quantiles and infinite endpoint results. Cauchy::inverse_cdf now uses reciprocal-tangent calculations. The small-probability path preserves subnormal probabilities and scale values. The implementation returns f64::NEG_INFINITY for both 0.0 and signed -0.0, returns f64::INFINITY at 1.0, and returns location at 0.5. Focused tests cover probabilities through 1e-300, subnormal inputs, endpoints, and the median.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff changes Cauchy::inverse_cdf and adds focused regression tests in src/distribution/cauchy.rs. The reciprocal-tangent paths, endpoint handling, subnormal handling, and tests directly support issue #471. No unrelated file or behavior change appears in the reviewed diff.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 1 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

below p = 1e-9, tan(pi p) equals pi p to double precision, so divide by p
directly; forming pi * p rounded badly once p was subnormal.

The expected value -f64::from_bits(1) / (core::f64::consts::PI * 1e-12) is about -1.57e-312. It is a nonzero subnormal, not negative zero. The default absolute tolerance of assert_relative_eq! is f64::EPSILON (about 2.2e-16). Any result within that distance of the expected value passes, including 0.0. So max_relative = 1e-3 does not constrain this check. The separate sign check rejects zero and positive results, but it accepts any negative result, such as -1e-300.
Divide the result by f64::from_bits(1) before comparing. The expected value becomes about -3.18e11, and max_relative applies to that measurable magnitude. This change adds regression coverage for the subnormal-scale quantile.

Update the `assert_relative_eq!` check for `d.inverse_cdf(1e-12)` to divide the
result by `f64::from_bits(1)` and compare it with the correspondingly scaled
expected quantile, so `max_relative` meaningfully checks the subnormal-scale
value.
