Summary

Implement transaction RPC compatibility protection to prevent requests from being processed by stores that cannot safely interpret them.

  • Update protobuf definitions and generated code for transaction protocol versions, request origins, store version ranges, and compatibility errors.
  • Select the RPC protocol version from client capability, store metadata, and payload requirements. Reject incompatible requests before dispatch.
  • Carry keyspace and protocol metadata through an immutable PlanContext, including retries, scanners, and lock resolution.
  • Reload store metadata after eligible upper-version admission rejections, with single-flight and cooldown protection. Resend only when a different compatible version is available.
  • Preserve undetermined and incompatible errors through fallback, aggregation, and cleanup. Check region errors before resolving locks or replaying requests.
  • Fix loss of key errors in CleanupLocks and error masking during partial pessimistic-lock rollback.

Compatibility

  • Stores without protocol-range metadata are treated as legacy ([0, 0]).
  • Non-transactional requests do not receive transaction protocol metadata.
  • The client defaults to protocol version 1; configuration supports selecting a lower version and setting the request origin.
  • This does not enable shared-lock support. Shared-lock payloads and returned shared locks are rejected rather than silently processed as legacy.
  • Low-level request traits are updated, and resolve_locks becomes an internal context-aware helper. The client-facing lock-resolution API remains available.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added transaction-protocol compatibility negotiation, helping requests use versions supported by each store.
    • Added request-origin identification and support for declaring transaction protocol requirements, including shared-lock operations.
    • Added structured incompatibility errors with compatible-version details.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of incompatible requests: store compatibility information can be refreshed and eligible requests retried; terminal incompatibilities are surfaced clearly.
    • Improved error prioritization and propagation during retries, lock resolution, and cleanup.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds transaction protocol versions, structured incompatibility errors, and store admission ranges. Request planning prepares protocol metadata, reloads store ranges for eligible incompatibilities, and carries request context through transaction, lock-resolution, and scan operations.

Changes

Transaction protocol compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protocol declarations and request preparation
proto/*, src/config.rs, src/common/*, src/store/mod.rs, src/store/request.rs, src/request/mod.rs, src/request/shard.rs, src/raw/requests.rs, src/lib.rs
Protobuf declarations add transaction protocol versions, store ranges, request origins, and structured incompatibility errors. Configuration, store metadata, and request classification now select and prepare protocol versions for transaction RPCs.
Store metadata reload
src/pd/client.rs, src/region_cache.rs, src/mock.rs
PD store mappings carry protocol ranges. Store metadata can be reloaded by ID, with concurrent reload attempts coordinated and mocked reload outcomes supported.
Dispatch and retry behavior
src/request/plan.rs, src/request/plan_builder.rs, src/store/errors.rs
Request plans carry PlanContext, prepare requests from store ranges, and reload metadata for eligible incompatibilities. Error extraction and retry handling prioritize undetermined and incompatible region errors.
Transaction, lock, and scan integration
src/transaction/*
Transaction and client operations carry PlanContext. Lock resolution and remote scans reload protocol ranges and retry compatible requests. Error merging and partial-lock cleanup use error priorities.

The change adds protocol-aware transaction request handling. No concrete runtime defect remains from this review. The remaining item is small: mark the new public RequestOrigin enum as non-exhaustive before release so that adding future origins does not break downstream code.

Mark the public RequestOrigin enum #[non_exhaustive].

RequestOrigin is exported from the crate root. The proto comments say that more origins will be added later. Without #[non_exhaustive], any user who writes an exhaustive match on this enum breaks when a new variant is added. Add the attribute now, before the enum is released. After release, adding the attribute is itself a breaking change.
