Summary

  • A user turn whose origin is a channel message (WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, Signal, iMessage, …) is logged as observed from its sender, not from the memory's owner (see the scope note: channel turns are not logged today). This covers the phone number or platform id, plus the display name.
  • In a group chat the sender is the participant who wrote the message, not the group.
  • Inert until [memory] observed_actor is on (feat(memory): attribute stored items to who said them, off by default #7129, merged) with the CortexDB engine. Off, tinymemory clears the field and nothing on the wire changes.
  • Scope note, found while fixing CI. Inbound channel messages from the channel runtime (channels/runtime/dispatch/processor/turn.rs → agent.run_turn → agent/harness/graph.rs::run_channel_turn_via_graph) run on the harness graph, and that path logs no turns to memory. Only the session host calls the lifecycle hooks (memory/bus.rs: "Turns are not ingested from the bus"), and its origins today are WebChat (web chat) or none (CLI). So this attribution applies once a channel turn is logged through the session host. Logging channel turns at all is a separate product decision, not made here. The spec line says so.

Problem

Every channel message was stored as if the user had said it. A WhatsApp message from Mum, or a Telegram message from a group participant, was indistinguishable from the user's own words.

Solution

  • AgentTurnOrigin::ExternalChannel gains sender_name. channels/runtime/dispatch/processor/turn.rs fills it from ChannelMessage::sender_name (tinychannels v0.1.11). Every other constructor passes None: triage, MCP server, voice, cron and tests.

  • memory/lifecycle/sender.rs::channel_actor maps the origin to an ObservedActor:

    Sender Actor id
    a phone number on a phone-addressed channel (whatsapp, signal, imessage, linq, sms) user:+15551234567 (dial digits)
    an email address (dotted domain) user:priya@acme.com (lower-cased)
    anything else: a Telegram or Discord id, a WhatsApp <lid>@lid, a Signal UUID <channel>:<sender>
    • Name: the channel's push or profile name (WhatsApp push/profile name, Telegram first + last name, Signal source name). No channel exposes a saved contact name, so none is used.
    • Phone numbers and email addresses are kept in plain text, per the user decision.
    • Phone detection is per channel. A Telegram user id or a Discord snowflake is digits too, and must not become user:<digits>.
  • No attribution for an origin without a sender (triage, MCP, voice), for a non-channel origin, or for a cron run. A cron run replays its creator's channel origin around the job's own prompt (cron/origin.rs, message_id cron:<job>:<run>); that text is the host's, not something the sender said.

  • PreTurnInput::observed_actor: memory_pre_turn takes the turn's origin from its caller, which reads it off the run context (OpenHumanRunContext::origin). The session host never reads the task-local origin (agent-runtime-boundary, openhuman-task-local), and runtime_session.rs stays at its pinned 1474 lines. hooks::pre_turn then hooks::pre_turn passes it on as PreTurn::observed_actor (tinymemory v1.23.9, Attribute a user turn to its observed actor tinymemory#238). tinymemory logs it as the user turn's meta.observed_actor. It is not part of the turn's id, so a retried turn stays a replay.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated: memory/lifecycle/sender_tests.rs:
    • phone senders (+, formatted, bare) with the name trimmed;
    • email senders lower-cased;
    • Telegram/Discord digit ids and a WhatsApp LID stay <channel>:<sender>;
    • no attribution without a sender, for a blank or multi-word sender, a blank channel, Cli/DirectChat, or a cron run.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%: the new mapping is covered by the tests above; the other changed lines are sender_name: None / observed_actor: None in existing literals. Enforced by CI Fast's diff-cover gate (not run locally, per the CI-only rule).
  • Coverage matrix: N/A, a memory-attribution detail behind an off-by-default setting.
  • Feature IDs: N/A.
  • No new external network dependencies.
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, off by default.
  • Linked issue: N/A (fleet task F5, part D).

Impact

  • Core only. Off by default (the engine setting is feat(memory): attribute stored items to who said them, off by default #7129), so there is no behaviour change unless [memory] observed_actor = true with CortexDB.
  • Privacy: when on, a channel sender's phone number (or platform id) and display name are stored on the turn and sent to CortexDB as its observed actor. This is per the user decision that phone numbers may be stored in plain text.
  • WhatsApp Web LID-addressed senders arrive as <lid>@lid since tinychannels v0.1.11. They are named whatsapp:<lid>@lid, not user:, and never mistaken for a phone or an email.

Behavior Changes

  • Intended behavior change: with [memory] observed_actor on (CortexDB), a channel message's user turn names its sender.
  • User-visible effect: none by default.

Parity Contract

  • Legacy behavior preserved: yes. sender_name is additive; the approval gate, cron and attachment logic ignore it. Off, the wire is byte-identical (tinymemory).
  • Guard/fallback/dispatch parity checks: tinymemory sends a refused attributed write again without the fields.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Channel-originated turns can carry sender identity into memory attribution. Phone, email, and other channel senders receive distinct identity formats, while scheduled runs are not attributed to a sender.
    • Channel-provided display names are now available as part of turn context.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how sender identities are formatted for memory attribution and noted the current limits on logging channel turns.

  • medium · critique · Test the observed actor passed into memory_pre_turn — This newly wired argument is the behavior that makes `ExternalChannel.sender` reach `PreTurnInput.observed_actor`, but the change adds no regression test at this call site. A futur (crates/openhuman\-core/src/agent/session\_host/runtime\_session\.rs:1150)

A real channel message whose provider-issued ID begins with `cron:` is therefore treated as a cr (crates/openhuman\-core/src/agent/session\_host/runtime\_session/memory\_ingest\.rs:122)
  • medium · critique · Do not send channel identity to memory logging — This contract explicitly stores the channel name together with the sender identifier, so the same person is represented as different observed actors across channels and the memory (docs/specs/memory\-v2\.md:190)
  • medium · critique · Cover channel attribution through the complete turn path — The call now supplies the origin, but there is still no end-to-end test covering a channel dispatch with a concrete sender through session hosting and memory recording. Without tha (crates/openhuman\-core/src/agent/session\_host/runtime\_session\.rs:1149)
  • medium · critique · Test the memory-ingest observed-actor wiring — This change is the only call-site wiring from `run_context.data.origin` into `PreTurnInput.observed_actor`, but the diff adds no test that drives `memory_pre_turn` with an `Externa (crates/openhuman\-core/src/agent/session\_host/runtime\_session/memory\_ingest\.rs:122)

The existing evidence covers the helper and (crates/openhuman\-core/src/agent/session\_host/runtime\_session\.rs:1136)

  • medium · tests · Distinguish cron origins without trusting the message ID prefix — Still keys the not-a-cron decision on the raw `cron:` message-id prefix. The cron origin builder (`cron/origin.rs`) replays a channel origin verbatim around the job's prompt, so wh (crates/openhuman\-core/src/memory/lifecycle/sender\.rs:46)
  • medium · description · Test the memory_ingest observed_actor wiring, not just the helper — Still stands, and this revision touched exactly this wiring: `memory_pre_turn` now takes an `origin` parameter and derives `observed_actor` from it, but no test in the diff asserts (\(pull request description\))
  • medium · description · Distinguish cron origins without trusting the message ID prefix — Still stands from the earlier revision, unchanged. Cron attribution is excluded by sniffing the `message_id` prefix `cron:`, which is a naming convention of `cron/origin.rs` rather (\(pull request description\))
  • medium · description · Cover the observed-actor channel attribution end to end — Still stands: coverage is unit tests over `channel_actor` in isolation. Nothing exercises an origin produced by the real dispatch path flowing through `memory_pre_turn` into a logg (\(pull request description\))

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The wiring commit adds `observed_actor` to the memory pre-turn via `channel_actor`, and the earlier round's ExternalChannel-literal churn is complete. Two of the earlier findings still stand: cron attribution still keys on the `cron:` message-id prefix, and the memory_ingest wiring plus end-to-end attribution remain untested — the tests in the diff all pass `None` and the new sender tests cover only the helper. description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The wiring now reaches `memory_pre_turn` and every `ExternalChannel` literal carries the new field, so the constructor-completeness finding is resolved. What remains are the earlier, still-standing concerns: cron attribution still keys on the `cron:` message-id prefix, phone/email identity still flows into memory logging (per the stated user decision, so a product call rather than a defect), the attribution path still has no end-to-end coverage, and the new `memory_pre_turn` wiring itself is untested. With those acknowledged and the feature off by default, the change looks otherwise sound. (1 earlier finding(s) still open) _Code retrieval was unavailable (model: ladder embeddings returned 400 Bad Request: {"error":{"message":"unknown ladder vectors; known ladders are flash (also chat-v1, flash-v1), instant (also no-think, instant-v1), reasoning (also deepseek), max-reasoning (also max-reasoning-v1), deepseek-flash (also reasoning-v1, agentic-v1), deep (also luna), scribe, uncensored, vectors-oai3 (also embeddings-oai3-v1), vision (also vision-v1, multimodal-v1), image (also images-v1, image-v1), vi), so this review saw the diff alone._ _Memory was unavailable (model: cortex: v1/recall: error sending request for url (http://cortexdb:3141/v1/recall\)\), so this review ran without it._

e2e

  • Conclusion: Neutral
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: This pull request adds a `sender_name` to every `ExternalChannel` origin and a new `observed_actor` attribution path from `memory_pre_turn` through the lifecycle hooks, with no end-to-end test covering either: the new `sender.rs` helper and its unit tests in `sender_tests.rs` are the only coverage, and no Playwright or Rust E2E spec drives a channel message through the running system to observe the attributed actor. The prior end-to-end coverage finding therefore still stands, and the other earlier findings appear to have been addressed by the `cron:` prefix check and the wiring of `observed_actor` into `PreTurnInput`. Waiting on end-to-end jobs: `Rust E2E (mock backend)`, `Build Playwright E2E Artifact`, `E2E (Playwright / web lane)`, `Desktop E2E (full suite, 3 OS)`. (1 already reported on an earlier push)

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

External-channel turn origins now include an optional sender name. Memory preparation derives an observed actor from eligible channel origins and passes it into the memory pre-turn request. The memory specification and related fixtures reflect these fields.

ExternalChannel gains an optional sender_name, and channel dispatch copies the message sender name into the origin. channel_actor maps eligible phone, email, and other sender values to actor IDs, trims display names, and excludes cron-originated messages. Related origin constructors, tests, and fixtures initialize sender_name.

The session host passes the turn origin to memory preparation. Memory ingestion derives an observed actor and supplies it to the pre-turn hook, which copies it into the logged request. Tests initialize the new field, and the memory specification describes channel sender attribution.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 17209

Sender attribution for channel messages likely won't take effect, because channel turns don't pass through the memory hook that consumes it. The change is off by default and does no harm, but the feature doesn't work as described. Resolve or explicitly accept this before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 17209

The change adds sender attribution without changing the locally enforced memory owner or channel approval policy. Attribution is off by default, but sender authenticity and downstream handling of personal information remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected application flow adds attribution within the independently configured memory identity and owner scope. It does not demonstrate a new cross-owner access path. Maximum downstream data-store exposure and inherited use of actor identity remain unknown because the persistence and policy consumers were not available.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — External-channel input remains explicitly remote-untrusted. The inspected approval branch ignores sender_name, persists an audit row, and parks rather than automatically allowing external effects. Actor normalization is not an authentication control and does not replace this approval policy.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing pre-turn operation is best-effort and spawned: timeout stops waiting for recall but does not cancel the write. The new actor accompanies that operation. Post-turn logging consumes the saved identity and index without repairing pre-turn attribution. Safe repetition, concurrency, partial-write recovery, and cancellation outcomes remain delegated to the unavailable dependency contract, rather than being established locally.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before enabling attributed channel persistence, verify the intended adapter and memory contracts end to end: bind sender IDs to provider-authenticated identities, keep display names non-authoritative, preserve memory owner and tenant scope, and establish disabled-mode, rejection-fallback, retry, and recovery behavior for attributed writes.

M3gA-Mind dismissed coderabbitai[bot]’s stale review October 8, 2026 12:43

The merge-base changed after approval.

A message that arrived on a channel was written by its sender, not by
the memory's owner. The channel runtime now carries the sender's display
name on the turn origin (AgentTurnOrigin::ExternalChannel::sender_name,
from tinychannels v0.1.11 ChannelMessage::sender_name), and the pre-turn
log sets the user turn's observed actor (tinymemory v1.23.9
PreTurn::observed_actor) from the origin:

- a phone number on a phone-addressed channel (whatsapp, signal,
  imessage, linq, sms): user:+<dial digits>;
- an email address: user:<lower-cased address>;
- anything else (a Telegram or Discord id, a WhatsApp <lid>@lid):
  <channel>:<sender>;

with the sender's push or profile name. A cron run, which replays its
creator's channel origin around the job's prompt, is not attributed.
The engine sends the actor only with [memory] observed_actor on.
The session host may not read the task-local turn origin
(agent-runtime-boundary, openhuman-task-local). memory_pre_turn now takes
the origin its caller already holds on the run context
(OpenHumanRunContext::origin) and maps the sender from that.
runtime_session.rs stays at its pinned 1474 lines.

docs/specs/memory-v2.md: the channel-sender line, and that channel turns,
which run on the harness graph, are not logged today.

- Line 1150: Connect channel turns carrying ExternalChannel origins to the
session-host memory lifecycle so they invoke memory_pre_turn before execution;
update the graph path that currently calls run_turn_via_tinyagents_shared
directly to use the session-host runtime hook, preserving the origin for sender
attribution.
