feat(http): bound multipart responses and redact credential echoes - #54
Conversation
Add a test asserting that multipart responses exceeding the configured size limit are rejected, guarding against regressions in the limit handling. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add post_multipart_with_response_limit, which streams the response and fails with ResponseTooLarge once the byte budget is exceeded, so callers can cap multipart responses before JSON decoding. Rejected or unsuccessful bounded responses have credential echoes redacted, and the existing post_multipart path is unchanged. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Credential redaction now also inspects object keys, not just values, so secrets echoed as JSON keys are scrubbed before an error is surfaced. Tests cover a response exactly at the size budget and an unsuccessful envelope returned with a success status. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds documentation for the post_multipart_with_response_limit helper, which bounds response bodies and returns Error::ResponseTooLarge before parsing. Also notes that failed responses redact bearer tokens and API keys, while successful payloads and the existing post_multipart helper are unchanged. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Add tests for overlapping credentials that must be redacted without leaking a suffix, and for a credential that collides with a protocol key so the failure classification stays intact. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Credential redaction previously only ran on successful responses, so secrets echoed back inside an error envelope could leak to callers. The redaction helpers were split into text and value variants and are now applied to the error, error code, and details of an unwrapped envelope whenever a response size limit is configured. All three actionable threads are addressed with verified regressions and a fresh strict Clippy/full-suite pass. For the optional Content-Length optimization, I am retaining the streaming check as the authoritative bound: the current 64 KiB consumer budget rejects as soon as an observed chunk crosses it, including absent or inaccurate size metadata. An early declared-length check can be added separately with chunked-response coverage if bandwidth measurements justify it; it is not necessary for the response safety contract. |
|
@coderabbitai review The actionable response-limit assertion and the two credential-redaction findings are fixed, tested, and replied to in their resolved threads. The current head passed all 211 tests, strict workspace Clippy, formatting, and a verified package build. Please re-review the updated head; I have also sent the normal GitHub review re-request. |

Add unit and integration tests for credentials whose values collide with the redaction markers themselves, ensuring marker removal cannot echo a secret or splice two credentials together. The integration test also confirms status and envelope errors stay redacted for these inputs. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The text redaction now drops the replacement marker when a secret is a substring of it, and clears the whole string if replacing one secret would reconstitute another. This prevents credentials from surviving redaction when they overlap with the marker or with each other. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
|
Fixed the remaining credential-marker collision finding and renamed the integration test to tests/multipart_response_limit_tests.rs, as requested in the review body. New redaction regressions failed against the old code and pass with the fix; HTTP-status and unsuccessful-envelope regressions also verify Display and Debug output. Fresh cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings, all 214 tests, and cargo package (including verification) passed. The security thread is replied to and resolved. Please re-review the pushed head. The optional Content-Length optimization remains declined for the previously posted reason: the chunk-by-chunk check enforces the safety budget regardless of missing or inaccurate size metadata; an early metadata check is a separate bandwidth optimization. |

Cloud transcription callers need a 64 KiB response budget and must not expose a backend error that echoes the caller’s credential. The existing multipart helper accepts arbitrarily large bodies and preserves credential echoes.
Add
post_multipart_with_response_limitto the SDK’s native HTTP transport. It bounds bytes during streaming, returnsResponseTooLargebefore parsing an oversized body, and redacts configured bearer/API-key echoes in failed response values and object keys. Successful payloads and the existing unbounded helper retain their behavior. No endpoint or published version changes. This is the SDK prerequisite for tinyhumansai/openhuman#7404; the OpenHuman TinyHumans layer will consume this helper rather than copying an HTTP transport.
Validation: actual existing-helper RED (oversized response accepted; 401 credential echo exposed), then bounded-helper GREEN. Four localhost mock integration regressions cover oversize, exact budget, status errors, and unsuccessful envelopes; unit tests cover nested redaction without network.
cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings, all 209 tests, cargo fmt --check, andcargo packagepass. The deployed Swagger transcription route was checked; route exposure guards remain intact.Summary by CodeRabbit
