Summary

Problem. tinymcp dropped tool _meta, structuredContent and resources, so hosts could not render MCP Apps widgets (SEP-1865 _meta.ui.resourceUri, text/html;profile=mcp-app) or OpenAI Apps SDK widgets (openai/outputTemplate). Servers such as Swiggy Instamart ship ui://widget/*.html screens that no host could show.

Solution. Carry that data end to end and give hosts one shared set of presentation rules:

  • Bus: McpClientIdentityConfig.capabilities makes the initialize client capabilities configurable (so a host can advertise the io.modelcontextprotocol/ui extension); tool _meta is kept; McpToolResult gains structured_content, meta and resources; the mcp_result envelope carries them; a resource-too-large error is added.
  • Registry: tool_meta, read_resource and list_resources by server id.
  • Contract: bumped from 1.4 to 1.6 (1.5 for tool _meta and resource payloads, 1.6 for the tool UI presentation vocabulary).
  • New optional ui feature (tinymcp::ui):
    • template resolution from ui.resourceUri and openai/outputTemplate
    • presentation resolution with caps (2 MiB widget, 64 KB structured content, 16 KB meta and input)
    • link classification into web, handoff (app schemes such as upi), image and blocked
    • widget call policy: readOnlyHint is allowed, show_ui and hidden tools are denied, everything else needs confirmation
    • a rendering decision for hosts that do or do not render widgets

Related issue

Closes #50

The OpenHuman host PR follows and will pin this release.

API or behavior changes

  • Additive. Contract 1.4 to 1.6; new fields and methods are optional, and a module older than 1.6 is rejected by is_compatible.
  • Hosts that do not set capabilities see no change in the initialize handshake or in tool results.
  • The ui feature is opt-in and off by default.
  • McpToolResult and the tool descriptor structs gain fields, so exhaustive struct literals in downstream code need ..Default::default() or the new fields.

Validation

Commands actually run on the rebased branch (on top of upstream main at 9d40111), with their outcome:

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings: clean
  • cargo build --all-targets --all-features: clean
  • cargo test --all-features: 1436 passed, 0 failed, 0 ignored
  • RUSTDOCFLAGS=-Dwarnings cargo doc --no-deps --all-features: clean

Manual verification: run end to end in an OpenHuman desktop dev build against the live Swiggy Instamart MCP server; the search, cart and checkout widgets rendered in chat.

Tests

  • Unit tests alongside each module (*_tests.rs) for the bus payloads and mcp_result envelope, capability serialization, _meta retention, resource reads and the too-large error, and the contract version and compatibility boundary (1.5 rejected, 1.6 accepted).
  • ui tests cover template resolution for both vocabularies, each size cap, link classification (web, handoff, image, blocked), every widget call policy outcome, and the rendering decision for rendering and non-rendering hosts.
  • Not covered by automated tests: real widget rendering, which depends on the host and is covered by the manual verification above.

Documentation

README gains a "UI presentation for hosts" section, including how non-visual hosts consume the same rules. Public items carry rustdoc, checked with -Dwarnings.

McpRemoteTool keeps the server's _meta. McpToolResult gains optional
structured_content, meta and embedded resources, all host-facing: no
rendering method reads them, so model-facing text is unchanged and the
wire form is unchanged when they are absent. Adds McpResource,
McpResourceContents and MAX_RESOURCE_BYTES for resources/list and
resources/read.
McpClientIdentityConfig gains capabilities, sent as
initialize.capabilities. Defaults to an empty object and is left off the
wire when empty, so existing configurations serialize unchanged.
McpResultEnvelope (kind mcp_result) carries a call's structured content,
_meta, embedded resources and optional McpCallOutcome as host-only
metadata. McpCallOutcome::from_metadata reads the outcome from either the
envelope or the bare mcp_call shape, so hosts that meter calls through it
keep working. Adds Error::ResourceTooLarge and bumps the contract to 1.5.
…urces

Both transports send the identity's capabilities at initialize (HTTP
builder capabilities(), stdio with_capabilities()), cache listed tools
with their _meta (cached_tool), and gain list_resources (paginated,
bounded) and read_resource (raw contents, refused above
MAX_RESOURCE_BYTES). render_tool_result fills structuredContent, _meta
and embedded resource blocks into the host-facing fields; the rendered
text is byte-identical.
Connections captures each tool's _meta at connect (tool_meta,
tool_metas) and reads resources of a connected server (list_resources,
read_resource). McpServerRegistry answers tool_meta from the last
listing, honouring its allow and deny lists, and lists and reads
resources by server name.
tool_result_for maps a result exactly as tool_result does and attaches
an McpResultEnvelope as host-only metadata; McpServerTool uses it.
mcp_call_tool attaches the envelope with its McpCallOutcome nested under
outcome on an answered call, scrubbing secrets from the server-supplied
parts; failed calls keep the bare outcome. McpCallOutcome::from_metadata
reads both.
McpUiPresentation, UiLink and LinkClass, UiResource and UiCsp, the
widget call policy and rendering choice, and the MCP Apps constants, so
every host reads and writes the same tool UI metadata.
Behind the new ui feature: resolve a call's widget template from the
tool's _meta, cap the data a presentation carries, validate widget
documents, classify links (web, handoff, image, blocked), and decide
widget tool calls and rendering. Pure over the call's JSON; caching
stays with the host.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 47cd9

Direct MCP tool results can now expose echoed credentials in result metadata. Scrub that metadata before merging; also align metadata lookup with the tool-call name handling.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 47cd9

The new widget flow expands how server-controlled data reaches hosts. Credential filtering does not consistently cover the new channels, and automatic widget-call permission relies on a server-declared hint. Existing checks limit resource selection and presentation size, but the consuming host must supply additional authorization and isolation controls.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: Credential filtering does not consistently cover the newly introduced host-facing channels. The direct tool adapter attaches an unfiltered envelope, and the existing whole-result scrubber ignores metadata. The bridge scrubs structured content, metadata and resource text but not resource blobs, which UI resolution can decode into HTML. A configured server's echoed credentials can therefore survive into host-consumable data unless an additional host wrapper filters these fields. External disclosure remains unverified.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The shared widget policy treats readOnlyHint as sufficient for Allow after visibility and page-flavor checks. A server that mislabels a tool can obtain an automatic-call recommendation rather than confirmation. The helper has no trust or independent authorization input; hosts treating its answer as complete authorization could permit unintended operations under their configured server credentials. The helper itself does not execute calls, and independent host gates may contain this risk.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced attack scope begins with a configured server controlling its tool descriptors and replies, and extends to that call's host-facing metadata and widget presentation. Credential consequences depend on credentials supplied to that server; broader tenant, service or environment authority and external persistence of these results were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A server can echo a supplied credential in newly preserved result fields. The direct adapter serializes those fields into metadata without filtering; even the bridge preserves encoded resource blobs that the UI parser can decode. The path to host-consumable data is supported, but a deployed recipient, disclosure destination and exploitable credential scope remain unresolved. This does not resolve the supplied deferred candidate into a verified Security finding.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The bridge invokes its host-supplied act gate before calling the registry and applies configured-secret filtering to model-facing output and selected envelope fields. Direct invokers deliberately delegate additional policy to host wrappers; equivalent filtering of the new envelope cannot be assumed.
  • observed — Widget policy denies host-inline pages and tools hidden from apps, confirms tools without a read-only declaration, and allows tools declaring readOnlyHint. Link classification blocks listed dangerous schemes and malformed URLs; other schemes become phone handoffs, which the contract explicitly says must never be opened on the host machine.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Resource operations inherit the existing connection-snapshot lifecycle: an operation owns a cloned connection while replacement or disconnect changes the registry mapping. The same pattern already governed tool calls at the PR base. No new cross-server dispatch or materially worsened revocation guarantee was established; callers' requirements for stale-generation results remain unknown.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define one explicit credential-filtering boundary for every host-facing result path, covering metadata and decoded textual resource blobs before presentation. Preserve the existing model-facing filtering while making host-wrapper responsibilities explicit.
  • proposed — Keep server annotations advisory. Require independent host authorization and trusted tool identity before automatic widget calls, and require confirmation when read-only status has not been independently established.

Findings

  • critical · critique · Clone capabilities before moving identity — `McpClientInfo::from(identity)` consumes `identity`, so the following field initializer attempts to access a moved value and causes compilation to fail. Clone or extract `identity. (crates/tinymcp/src/transport/stdio/mod\.rs:95)
  • high · critique · Serialize envelope fields with their MCP wire names — The envelope documents and carries the reply's `structuredContent` and `_meta`, but these fields are serialized as `structured_content` and `meta` because they have no `rename` att (crates/tinymcp\-bus/src/agent\_tools/types\.rs:282)
  • high · critique · Add the referenced UI test module — The `#[path]` attribute requires `crates/tinymcp/src/config_servers/mod_ui_tests.rs`, but the complete diff and repository search contain no such file. Any build that enables tests (crates/tinymcp/src/config\_servers/mod\.rs:39)
  • high · critique · Do not emit a response for the initialized notification — The second scripted exchange corresponds to `notifications/initialized`, which is a JSON-RPC notification and therefore has no response for the client to read. Emitting an empty li (crates/tinymcp/src/config\_servers/mod\_ui\_tests\.rs:124)
  • medium · critique · Match one-character handoff schemes — The classifier accepts any scheme whose first character is alphabetic, including a valid one-character scheme such as `x://pay`, but this regex requires at least two scheme charact (crates/tinymcp/src/ui/links\.rs:47)
  • medium · critique · Restrict image detection to HTTP(S) URLs — `is_image_url` is documented as checking an `http(s)` URL, but it returns `true` for any parseable scheme whose path looks like an image, such as `file:///tmp/photo.png` or `javasc (crates/tinymcp/src/ui/links\.rs:98)
  • medium · critique · Match the complete HTML MIME type — Inputs such as `text/html-malformed` or `text/htmlfoo` pass this check and can be selected and served as widget documents even though they are not the `text/html` media type. Compa (crates/tinymcp/src/ui/resolve\.rs:88)
  • medium · critique · Require a matching resource URI — When `contents` contains exactly one entry whose `uri` differs from the requested `uri`, the fallback accepts and serves that entry anyway. This contradicts the function's document (crates/tinymcp/src/ui/resolve\.rs:328)
  • medium · critique · Reject non-string pagination cursors — A response such as `{"resources": [], "nextCursor": 123}` is accepted and produces `None`, so callers stop pagination and silently omit later resources instead of reporting a malfo (crates/tinymcp/src/transport/resources\.rs:21)
  • medium · critique · Reject out-of-range HTTPS ports — This accepts any all-digit port, including `https://example\.com:0`, `https://example\.com:65536`, and arbitrarily large values such as `https://example\.com:99999`\. Those are not val (crates/tinymcp/src/ui/resolve\.rs:431)
  • medium · critique · Propagate capabilities into initialize requests — A configured value such as the documented `extensions` object is now accepted and retained in `McpClientIdentityConfig`, but the transport-facing `McpClientInfo::from(&identity)` p (crates/tinymcp\-bus/src/config/types\.rs:251)
  • medium · critique · Scrub resource URIs before exposing the envelope — `McpResourceContents` resources can carry secrets in their URI, for example a URI with a token query parameter. This loop scrubs only `text` and `meta`, while the new envelope plac (crates/tinymcp/src/tools/bridge\.rs:416)
  • critical · security · Add the missing UI module before exporting it — Rust resolves `pub mod ui;` to a `ui.rs` file or `ui/mod.rs`, but no such module exists in the repository at this commit. The subsequent `pub use ui::{...}` therefore cannot resolv (crates/tinymcp\-bus/src/lib\.rs:132)
  • critical · security · Clone capabilities before consuming identity — `McpClientInfo::from(identity)` consumes `identity`, so the following access to `identity.capabilities` fails to compile. Clone the capabilities before passing `identity` by value. (crates/tinymcp/src/transport/stdio/mod\.rs:95)
  • high · security · Propagate capabilities into the initialize request — This adds a public configuration field and documents it as being sent in `initialize.capabilities`, but the existing `McpClientInfo::from` conversion copies only `name`, `title`, a (crates/tinymcp\-bus/src/config/types\.rs:251)
  • high · security · Do not authorize calls from an untrusted read-only hint — `annotations` comes from the server and `readOnlyHint` is only an advisory declaration; a malicious or mistaken server can mark a side-effecting tool as read-only. This makes the h (crates/tinymcp/src/ui/policy\.rs:43)
  • medium · security · Scrub embedded resource URIs — The new envelope stores server-supplied resources in metadata, but this loop scrubs only resource text and metadata. A resource URI can contain an endpoint credential or other conf (crates/tinymcp/src/tools/bridge\.rs:416)

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds tool UI vocabulary, resource transport, client capabilities, and a result envelope, and it is unusually well tested: wire shapes are pinned, the size caps and scrubbing are exercised, and both transports share tested decoding. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Trim the tool name in tool_meta before the cache lookup.

is_tool_allowed trims tool internally. cached_tool(tool) then looks up the untrimmed string. call_tool trims first and then uses the trimmed name. So tool_meta("ui", " show_card") passes the permission check but returns None, while a call with the same name works. Trim once at the start of the function to match call_tool.

Scrub metadata returned by direct MCP tools.

McpServerTool::execute returns tool_result_for without applying SecretScrubber. The function copies server-controlled structuredContent, _meta, and embedded resource text into ToolResult.metadata. A server can echo a configured credential in these fields, so the host receives the credential in the new metadata. Apply the same credential scrubbing used by the bridge before returning this metadata.

Clone capabilities before moving identity

McpClientInfo::from(identity) consumes identity, so the following field initializer attempts to access a moved value and causes compilation to fail. Serialize envelope fields with their MCP wire names

The envelope documents and carries the reply's structuredContent and _meta, but these fields are serialized as structured_content and meta because they have no rename attributes. McpResultEnvelope::to_metadata() therefore emits keys that MCP consumers do not expect, so hosts reading the envelope lose both pieces of host-facing result data. Add the same wire-name renames used by McpToolResult (and retain them on deserialization).

Do not emit a response for the initialized notification

The second scripted exchange corresponds to notifications/initialized, which is a JSON-RPC notification and therefore has no response for the client to read. Emitting an empty line leaves that line in stdout; when tools/list is sent next, the stdio reader can consume the blank line instead of the tools response and fail JSON parsing. Match one-character handoff schemes

The classifier accepts any scheme whose first character is alphabetic, including a valid one-character scheme such as x://pay, but this regex requires at least two scheme characters because the character class uses {1,31} after the initial character. As a result, extract_links silently omits otherwise allowed handoff URLs. Allow zero additional characters so extraction matches the classifier's accepted scheme grammar.

Propagate capabilities into the initialize request

This adds a public configuration field and documents it as being sent in initialize.capabilities, but the existing McpClientInfo::from conversion copies only name, title, and version. As a result, a host can configure extension capabilities and successfully round-trip them through this config type, yet the transport silently drops them before sending the handshake. Carry the value through the initialize request rather than adding it only to the configuration model.

Additional critique observation

Propagate capabilities into initialize requests

[RULE] unpropagated-config

A configured value such as the documented extensions object is now accepted and retained in McpClientIdentityConfig, but the transport-facing McpClientInfo::from(&identity) path and initialize payload must also carry this field. Without that wiring, transports continue sending their previous capabilities value, so hosts configured to advertise an extension never advertise it on the wire. Update the transport initialization path to read and send this field, and add a test that asserts the configured capabilities appear in the initialize request.

Do not authorize calls from an untrusted read-only hint

annotations comes from the server and readOnlyHint is only an advisory declaration; a malicious or mistaken server can mark a side-effecting tool as read-only. Scrub embedded resource URIs

The new envelope stores server-supplied resources in metadata, but this loop scrubs only resource text and metadata. A resource URI can contain an endpoint credential or other configured secret, and it is consequently copied into host-facing metadata unchanged. Scrub the URI before serializing the envelope.

Additional critique observation

Scrub resource URIs before exposing the envelope

[RULE] secret-leak

McpResourceContents resources can carry secrets in their URI, for example a URI with a token query parameter. This loop scrubs only text and meta, while the new envelope places the resource unchanged into ToolResult::metadata, so a configured credential can be returned to the host. Scrub every textual resource field, including the URI, before serializing the envelope.
