fix(youtube): keep the tokens until main confirms they are on disk - #290
Follow-up to #256, from a CodeRabbit comment on that PR.
Before:
Migration: on the first launch after fix(youtube): store account tokens encrypted like the Liner session #256, the renderer removes the plain localStorage copy of the YouTube tokens before asking main to store them. If that write fails, the tokens only live in memory and the user is signed out of YouTube on the next launch.
Main can't report a failed write anyway: AuthSessionStore.write logs the error and youtube-auth:set-session still answers with the session, so the renderer always thinks the tokens were saved.
Sign-in has the same gap: a write that fails looks like a successful sign-in until the next launch.
After:
AuthSessionStore.write / commit return whether the change reached the disk, and a new persist(next) returns that (false for a malformed session too). set() is unchanged, so the Liner session code paths behave exactly as before.
youtube-auth:set-session answers true / false (and false for a sender that isn't the app), and the preload type says so.
The migration only removes the plain copy once main answers true. Otherwise the copy stays and the next launch tries again.
completeYoutubeTvSignIn waits for the write. If it fails, the sign-in throws "Couldn't save the YouTube session on this device." and the in-memory session is cleared, so the sign-in screen shows an error instead of a session that disappears later.
Refresh and sign-out still don't wait (a refreshed access token is usable right away, and the refresh token already on disk stays valid); failures are logged.
Tests:persist reports a failed write (a directory where the file should be) and a malformed session; the migration keeps the plain copy when main can't store it and retries on the next launch; sign-in fails when main can't store the new tokens. The two renderer tests fail on current main.
npx tsc -b and npx vitest run src/shared/youtube/auth electron/auth-session-store.test.ts pass. Not tested in the packaged app.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved reliability when saving YouTube sign-in sessions. The app now confirms that session details were saved before treating sign-in as successful.
If a legacy session cannot be migrated, it remains available for a later retry instead of being discarded.
Sign-in now reports an error when the session cannot be saved.
Session updates now indicate when saving fails, helping prevent unsuccessful saves from being treated as successful.
The YouTube auth session bridge now reports whether main-process persistence succeeds. Session migration retains legacy tokens until storage succeeds, and TV sign-in fails if new tokens cannot be saved.

Summary
Persistence result contract and IPC electron/auth-session-store.ts, electron/auth-session-ipc.ts, electron/preload.ts, electron/auth-session-store.test.ts
AuthSessionStore.persist returns whether the write succeeds. The IPC handler and preload API return that boolean. Tests cover valid, malformed, and unwritable cases.
Session save and legacy migration src/shared/youtube/auth/youtubeAuthSession.ts, src/shared/youtube/auth/youtubeAuthSession.test.ts
Legacy tokens remain in localStorage until main-process storage succeeds. Tests cover successful migration and retry after a failed migration.

TV sign-in clears the in-memory session and rejects if saving fails. Refresh and sign-out start saving without waiting for the result.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 58190
If saving the migrated YouTube session fails, a window reload can still discard the only durable copy of the tokens. The user would then have to sign in again after the next app restart. This is an edge case, but it undermines the migration safeguard this PR adds, so it should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 58190
The change improves failed-save handling without expanding credential-storage authority. A pre-existing recovery limitation remains: failed writes leave credentials cached in the main process, so reloading can mistake unsaved credentials for saved ones.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The assessed change concerns YouTube credentials within the application's local user-data profile. It does not add storage authority, cross-service credential propagation or privileges to the affected IPC path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The main-process getter and setter retain the existing sender-frame URL check, which accepts file URLs or the configured development-server origin. The renderer still reaches credential persistence through preload and IPC rather than gaining direct filesystem access.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Refresh and sign-out continue without awaiting persistence. Sign-out clears renderer state and attempts remote revocation, but suppresses revocation-request errors. These recovery limitations predate this PR rather than representing newly weakened logout controls.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Distinguish volatile cached credentials from confirmed persisted credentials, so a read after failed persistence cannot authorize deleting the recovery copy. Validate the transition using the real store across renderer reload and main-process restart.

Explanation
The title names the main change: YouTube token handling now keeps the tokens until the main process confirms they are written to disk. The raw summary shows the migration only clears the localStorage copy after main confirms a successful write, and sign-in waits for the write result. The title matches the changeset and the PR objectives. It uses the conventional fix(youtube) prefix and is one sentence of 66 characters.

Keep the legacy copy until the save succeeds.
In the main-bridge path, save() calls dropLocal() before persistInMain() returns. A save can overlap the asynchronous migration and remove the legacy copy before either write succeeds. Defer dropLocal() until the save resolves true.

Do not treat a cached session as proof of persistence.

Do not treat a cached session as proof of persistence.
If a migration write fails, AuthSessionStore.commit still updates its in-memory session. A renderer reload then receives that session from bridge.get() and deletes the legacy copy, even though no copy reached disk. A later app restart loses the session. Keep the cache consistent with disk after a failed persist, or expose durability separately. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the migration path around `stored` and `dropLocal` so a session returned
from the cache is not treated as proof of persistence. Only remove the legacy
copy after `AuthSessionStore.commit` confirms the session was durably persisted,
or otherwise keep the cache consistent with disk after a failed `persist`.
