What

Songs now flow into each other without the silent gap between tracks. Gapless playback is always on, and a new Crossfade slider in Settings → Playback (Off to 12s, off by default) blends the end of a song into the next one. Consecutive tracks from the same album always stay gapless, and skipping a song fades it out over 300ms instead of cutting it.

Why

Closes #299. When a track ended, the player reloaded the next one on the same audio element. It waited for it to buffer, then faded it in, so there was always an audible gap.

How

  • playerRuntime.ts: a second <audio> element sits on standby with the next track loaded (from the audio cache, or the file for local tracks). Shortly before the current track ends, it starts and takes over playback. The lead time is the crossfade length, or about 40ms for gapless. The engine's loadAndPlay for that track then does nothing. A manual skip uses the same handoff, so skipping to the queued track starts instantly. The playing element always carries the liner-audio id, so the touch bar, fullscreen player and media controls keep working unchanged.
  • pitchShifter.ts: every element feeds one shared input bus, so EQ, pitch and reverb apply to both tracks during a crossfade.
  • crossfade.ts: the fade-length rule (off = gapless, never between tracks of the same album, never more than half of either track).
  • playerEngine.ts: tells the runtime which track an automatic advance would play (computeNextIndex(true)), so repeat-one and an empty radio queue never hand off to the wrong track.
  • playerStore.ts / PlaybackTab.tsx: persisted crossfadeSeconds setting and its slider, using the shared Slider. Strings are English-only for now; other locales fall back to English.

Known limits: HTML audio can't join two files sample-accurately. The ~40ms head start is a single constant (GAPLESS_HEAD_START_MS) to tune if a gap or a click shows up. Repeat-one, a radio refill at the end of the queue, and streams that couldn't be cached still use the old reload path.

Testing

  • pnpm exec tsc -b: clean
  • pnpm lint, pnpm build: clean
  • pnpm format:check: clean for every file in this PR. It also includes a one-line Prettier fix to an existing lyrics line in playerEngine.ts, which is unformatted on main and currently fails the format step of CI on main.
  • pnpm test: 815 passed. The 2 failures in src/shared/api/track.test.ts (ResizeObserver is not defined) fail the same way on unmodified main.
  • New tests: crossfade.test.ts (fade-length rule) and playerRuntime.transition.test.ts. The second covers the gapless handoff, crossfade overlap timing, the next-track guard, pausing mid-crossfade, and a manual skip to the standby track.

In the running app (pnpm dev)

Three 8s FLAC tone tracks were imported as local files and played through the real engine. Both audio elements were sampled every ~2ms over CDP:

Case Result
Gapless (crossfade off) handed off near the end; the next track's audio started 8ms before the old one's last frame (no silence)
Crossfade 3s old 0.10 → 0.076 → 0.025 → 0 and new 0 → 0.024 → 0.075 → 0.10 over ~3s
Same album, crossfade 3s, EQ on joined gapless (no fade), 32ms overlap; both elements on the shared effects bus, AudioContext running, no effects errors
Manual skip to the queued track new audio advancing 2.6ms after the skip; old track faded out over 304ms

After each handoff the next track loaded onto the standby element on its own. Nobody has listened yet. A screenshot of the slider still has to come from a signed-in session.

Found while testing: local tracks don't carry album info (localRecordToTrack drops the album tag), so the same-album rule doesn't apply to local files. With crossfade on, two tracks from a local album rip still crossfade. Gapless is unaffected. Left out of this PR because it changes how local tracks map to albums.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Crossfade setting in Playback settings, adjustable from Off to 12 seconds. Your selection is saved between sessions.
    • When enabled, tracks can overlap during transitions; tracks from the same album remain gapless.
  • Improvements
    • Playback transitions adapt the fade to the time remaining in a track, including when seeking near its end.

Every audio element's MediaElementSource now connects to one GainNode
bus instead of being the graph's input itself, so two elements can play
through the same EQ / pitch / reverb chain at once (needed for
crossfade and gapless handoff, tryliner#299).
…#299)

The runtime keeps a second audio element on standby with the next
track loaded (from the audio cache, or the file for local tracks).
Shortly before the current track ends it starts the standby element
and hands playback over, so the next track begins with no gap instead
of after a reload:

- gapless by default: the next track starts ~40ms early and the old
  tail fades over that window
- optional crossfade (crossfadeSeconds, 0-12s, off by default) overlaps
the two tracks; consecutive tracks of one album never fade, and a
fade never exceeds half of either track
- a manual skip fades the old track out over 300ms instead of cutting
it, and starts instantly when the skipped-to track is on standby
- EQ / pitch / reverb apply to both tracks through the shared bus
- the active element always carries the liner-audio id, so existing
  lookups keep working

Repeat-one, radio refills and uncached streams fall back to the
existing ended -> load path.
0 (Off, gapless only) to 12 seconds, reusing the shared Slider. Other
locales fall back to English until translated.
Adds runtime tests for the gapless handoff, crossfade overlap timing,
the next-track guard, pausing mid-crossfade and a manual skip to the
standby track.

Also re-arms the transition timer right after a seek / rate change
instead of waiting for the next timeupdate, which could arrive after
the track already ended in the short gapless window.

Walkthrough

The player adds persisted crossfade settings and transition timing. It prepares a standby audio element and hands off playback during gapless or crossfade transitions. The audio effects graph now accepts audio from both playback elements.

Possibly related PRs

  • tryliner/desktop#322: Changes stream resolution and playback loading, which this change also uses to prepare standby sources.

Suggested reviewers: feralbureau, veyyonn

Merge Risk: Low · up to c776e

The transition tests do not yet exercise native audio and effects together. A browser-level test would improve confidence, but no playback failure was established; the change is mergeable with that follow-up understood.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to c776e

The inspected playback paths reuse existing source-selection controls. A bounded lifecycle issue remains: stopping playback can leave the next track prepared or allow preparation to finish afterward. No new credential or cross-user exposure was established, but security coverage is incomplete.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: Stop-and-clear does not terminate standby ownership. Cancellation clears the transition timer and resets the active element, but leaves an existing standby source intact and does not invalidate asynchronous preload or preparation work. A completion can therefore attach a source after reset, retaining a blob URL or media source beyond the playback lifecycle. Normal replacement and handoff cleanup limit the consequence; unauthorized playback or unbounded accumulation was not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated cleanup defect is bounded to media resources owned by the browser playback runtime, including its single standby slot. The inspected failure does not establish cross-user access, additional privileges, or an independently reachable remote attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The added standby consumer reuses existing saved/local source selection rather than introducing a separate URL authority. Online cache-ahead resolution remains a separate path that already existed before this PR; its continued operation after cancellation must not be attributed to the new standby feature as a newly introduced network exposure.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The lifecycle concern is an ownership and cancellation-containment gap, not evidence of media-source authorization failure. Normal replacement releases the previous standby source, and outgoing completion releases captured active resources. Those controls constrain the issue but do not make stop-and-clear a complete cleanup boundary.

Explanation

The title "feat(player): gapless playback and crossfade between tracks" matches the main change. The raw summary shows gapless handoff and crossfade logic in playerRuntime.ts, crossfade.ts, and the new CrossfadeSetting UI, and the PR objectives confirm the same scope. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit prefix. It does not mention the skip fade, but that is a secondary detail.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#299] requests gapless playback and improved song transitions. The PR adds standby audio handoff, always-on gapless timing, optional crossfade settings, and same-album gapless rules. The PR adds automated tests for transition rules and runtime handoff behavior. The disclosed local-track album metadata limitation does not prevent the reported gapless behavior. The current playerEngine.ts change also supplies the automatic next track to the runtime.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support [#299]. They implement transition timing, standby audio management, shared effects processing, next-track selection, skip fade behavior, persisted settings, settings UI, and automated tests. The current playerEngine.ts diff contains only the next-track callback. The previously reported unrelated lyrics formatting change is not present in the reviewed diff.

Split playerRuntime.ts into modules that stay within the 150-line limit.

The applicable TypeScript rule is: “No file over 150 lines. Suggest splitting into components, hooks or utilities.”

playerRuntime.ts is 1,457 lines at the reviewed head, up from 1,200 lines at the merge base. This PR adds 257 net lines. Moving only createAudioElement and rampVolume removes about 36 lines and leaves the file at about 1,421 lines, so it does not resolve the violation.

These helpers are standalone, but they are not pure: createAudioElement mutates the document, and rampVolume mutates audio state and schedules timers. Extracting them is a useful first step. The standby, handoff, and existing runtime responsibilities must also be split until every TypeScript file meets the limit. This requires a broader refactor than the proposed low-effort staged change.

Clamp persisted crossfadeSeconds during hydration.

A finite media duration can still reach transitionMs when track metadata has a zero duration. A large persisted value can then produce an excessively long fade. The outgoing track can remain audible at a decreasing volume for a long, bounded interval.

An unknown media duration does not reach this path because scheduleTransition returns when audio.duration is not finite. The hydration clamp remains the correct fix for the zero-duration metadata case.

Import MAX_CROSSFADE_SECONDS through the player slice index.ts.

Line 4 imports from the internal path @/features/player/engine/crossfade. This bypasses the slice public API. Export the constant from the player index.ts and import it from there.

Minor · Reconnect all registered audio sources when migrating the graph. · pitchShifter.ts:563-577

src/features/player/engine/pitchShifter.ts:563-577
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Reconnect all registered audio sources when migrating the graph.

The merge-base graph uses version 2, while this code requires version 3. During HMR, window.__liner_pitch_graph can still contain the version-2 graph. If the next attach is for the standby element, disposeStaleGraph disconnects the active element's old source from its graph, but the current code reconnects only the standby source. The active element can therefore become silent during the handoff.

Suggested fix

Add browser-media coverage as an optional follow-up.

These tests validate runtime logic only. They mock play(), load(), and pause(), override media state, and use fake timers. A browser-specific failure in standby readiness, play(), or simultaneous audio output can pass.

If browser test infrastructure is introduced, add one test with two compatible short audio sources. Check standby readiness, handoff timing, and overlap during crossfade. The repository does not currently require or support this setup: Vitest runs only in jsdom, with no browser runner or audio test harness.

…ryliner#299)

Fixes:
- cap a crossfade at the time left, so a late seek can't fade the old
track out past its end (transitionTiming)
- drop a superseded preload before it touches the standby (ticket), so
a stale call can't wipe the standby of the real next track
- refill the standby from peekAutoNext once the old track has faded,
so a same-track reload (error recovery, seek) keeps the next
  transition gapless
- clamp a persisted crossfadeSeconds to 0-12 on hydration

Maintainability:
- move the audio-element helpers to audioElements.ts (typed window,
no any) and the standby source lookup to standbySource.ts; the
runtime keeps one standbySlot instead of three loose fields
- split the transition tests into a shared fixture plus gapless and
crossfade files, with regression tests for the fixes above
- extract the crossfade row into CrossfadeSetting and import
MAX_CROSSFADE_SECONDS through the player slice index
- remove the code comments this PR had added

Add a browser-level handoff test for native media and effects.

The current tests cover transition timing and volume state only. Their fixture mocks media methods and properties, and Vitest runs them in jsdom. Add a browser-level test with two short audio fixtures. Cover crossfade enabled and disabled with EQ or reverb active. Assert that the incoming element reaches full volume, the outgoing element pauses, and both media sources use the shared effects bus.

This is a recommended integration improvement, not evidence of a current runtime failure.
