Resolves #96

When a bundled entry imports its own package by name (Node's self-referencing), Rolldown resolves the specifier through exports into dist/. obuild has just cleaned dist/, so the lookup fails, and every self-import prints an UNRESOLVED_IMPORT warning before being treated as external.

This adds the package's own name to the externals, next to dependencies and peerDependencies, when package.json has exports.

Names are now regex-escaped before building the ^<name>/ subpath pattern. Previously a dot matched any character, so a name like acme.core also externalized acmeXcore/.... The escape is shared with the existing one in the trace plugin. That is the only case where Node resolves a self-reference, so a package without exports still gets the warning, which is correct because its import would fail at runtime.

The emitted code doesn't change: the specifier was already kept as is. This only removes the warnings. It also avoids a subtler problem: if a stale dist/ from an earlier build were present, the self-import could resolve and get bundled.

Tests

  • New test in test/obuild.test.ts that builds a temporary package with the issue's layout (named self.ref, exports for . and ./foo, src/index.ts importing self.ref/foo and self.ref, plus a look-alike selfxref/foo from node_modules). It asserts that no UNRESOLVED_IMPORT log is emitted, that both self-references stay in dist/index.mjs while selfxref/foo is bundled, and that the built loaders resolve. It fails on main, and the look-alike check also fails without the escaping.
  • vitest run: 19 passed. oxlint, oxfmt --check and tsc --noEmit --skipLibCheck are clean.
  • AGENTS.md externals line updated.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed package builds involving self-referencing imports when an exports configuration is present.
    • Self-references now resolve correctly without generating unresolved import warnings.
    • Prevented similarly named packages from being incorrectly treated as self-references.
    • Improved handling for root-package and subpath imports, preserving expected bundled output and runtime behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

Bundle builds now externalize package self-references when the package defines a name and exports. An integration test checks root and subpath imports, emitted output, warning-free resolution, and runtime behavior.

Changes: Package self-reference externalization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Externalize and test package self-references
src/builders/bundle.ts, test/obuild.test.ts, AGENTS.md
When the package defines a name and exports, bundle configuration marks the package name and subpaths as external. Regular-expression patterns use the shared escaping helper. The integration test checks warnings, emitted output, and runtime results.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in AGENTS.md: Bundle builds now externalize the package’s own name when package.json defines exports, directing self-references to the cleaned output directory in addition to Node.js builtins, dependencies, and peer dependencies.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/builders/bundle.ts: Self-referencing package imports are now externalized when ctx.pkg.name and ctx.pkg.exports exist, with package names escaped before creating exact and subpath regular expressions.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/builders/bundle.ts: Trace include patterns now use the shared regular-expression escaping helper instead of inline escaping.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/builders/bundle.ts: Added the local escapeRegExp helper for safely escaping regular-expression metacharacters.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #96 requires self-references through exports to avoid UNRESOLVED_IMPORT warnings and to remain unchanged in emitted output. src/builders/bundle.ts adds ctx.pkg.name and an escaped ^name/ pattern to external when ctx.pkg.exports exists. The added integration test covers root and subpath self-references, warning absence, emitted output, runtime loading, and a look-alike package name. Packages without exports remain unchanged.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes cover bundle externalization, regex escaping used by the bundle and trace matching, a focused integration test, and the related AGENTS.md update. These changes support issue #96. No unrelated product change is established by the available evidence.

426-428: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Exercise the package-root loader at runtime.

The test checks the root specifier in emitted text, but it does not resolve that specifier. dist.load() covers only the separate "./foo" export. A regression that preserves import("self.ref") but breaks root export resolution can therefore pass the test.

Suggested fix
       const dist = await import(pathToFileURL(join(pkgDir, "dist/index.mjs")).href);
       await expect(dist.load()).resolves.toBe("foo");
+      await expect(dist.loadRoot()).resolves.toBeDefined();
       await expect(dist.loadLookalike()).resolves.toBe("lookalike");
