Summary

Add upm (a fast, tiny package manager for the npm registry, written in TypeScript) to the benchmark suite.

What is upm?

  • Pure TypeScript — built with Node.js builtins (~230 KB on disk)
  • Fast — install speed on par with Rust-based PMs
  • Compatible — works with existing .npmrc, supports package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, and bun.lock
  • Lockfile: upm.lock
  • CI command: upm install --frozen-lockfile (also upm ci)
  • Scripts skipped by default — no --ignore-scripts needed

Changes

Benchmark scripts

  • scripts/setup.sh: Install upm via npm i -g upm@latest, log version
  • scripts/variations/common.sh: Add BENCH_INCLUDE, BENCH_SETUP, BENCH_INSTALL, and BENCH_COMMAND variables for upm
  • All 14 variation scripts: Add upm entries (clean, cache, lockfile, ci, build, run, etc.)
  • scripts/clean-helpers.sh: Add clean_upm_cache() (wipes ~/.upm/), add upm.lock to lockfile cleanup
  • scripts/package-count.sh: Detect upm.lock for PM inference, handle node_modules/.upm/ layout
  • scripts/generate-chart.js: Add upm color (#18b583)
  • bench: Add upm to AVAILABLE_PMS list

CI workflow

  • .github/workflows/benchmark.yaml: Add upm to default binaries list

App (visualization)

  • app/src/types/chart-data.ts: Add upm to all type unions/interfaces
  • app/src/components/icons/upm.tsx: New icon component based on official logo
  • app/src/components/icons/index.ts: Export upm icon
  • app/src/lib/get-icons.ts: Map upm to its icon
  • app/src/lib/utils.ts: Include upm in PM filter list
  • app/src/hooks/use-history-data.ts: Include upm in history PM list

Documentation

  • README.md: Add upm to supported tools lists

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added UPM to the package managers supported by benchmark runs, including installation, build, cache, CI, and script-execution tests.
    • UPM benchmark results and package counts are now included in charts, history, and leaderboards.
    • Added UPM cache cleanup support.
    • UPM is included in the documented list of benchmarked package managers.

Add upm (https://upm.sh/) — a fast, tiny package manager for the npm
registry written in TypeScript — to the benchmark suite.

Changes:
- scripts/setup.sh: install upm globally via npm, log its version
- scripts/variations/common.sh: add BENCH_INCLUDE/SETUP/INSTALL/COMMAND
  variables for upm
- scripts/variations/*.sh: add upm entries to all 14 variation scripts
(clean, cache, lockfile, ci, build, run, etc.)
- scripts/clean-helpers.sh: add clean_upm_cache (wipes ~/.upm/), add
  upm.lock to lockfile cleanup
- scripts/package-count.sh: detect upm.lock for PM inference, handle
  node_modules/.upm/ layout
- scripts/generate-chart.js: add upm color (#18b583)
- bench: add upm to AVAILABLE_PMS list
- .github/workflows/benchmark.yaml: add upm to CI matrix defaults
- app/src/types/chart-data.ts: add upm to all type unions and interfaces
- app/src/components/icons/upm.tsx: new icon component
- app/src/components/icons/index.ts: export upm icon
- app/src/lib/get-icons.ts: map upm to its icon
- app/src/lib/utils.ts: include upm in PM filter list
- app/src/hooks/use-history-data.ts: include upm in history PM list

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes add UPM to benchmark defaults, setup, and benchmark variations. They also add UPM package-count and cleanup handling, and include UPM in the application’s chart, history, and package-manager data.

Changes

UPM benchmark support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register UPM and prepare benchmark data
.github/workflows/benchmark.yaml, README.md, bench, scripts/setup.sh, scripts/variations/common.sh
Benchmark defaults and shared setup include UPM. Setup installs UPM and reports its version. The README lists UPM among supported benchmark tools.
Add UPM benchmark variation commands
scripts/variations/*
Cache, lockfile, node_modules, CI, build, build-cache, and run variations register UPM preparation and benchmark commands with Hyperfine.
Handle UPM package counts and cleanup
scripts/clean-helpers.sh, scripts/package-count.sh, scripts/generate-chart.js
Package counting detects UPM lockfiles and node_modules metadata. Cleanup removes the UPM cache and lockfile. Chart generation assigns UPM a color.
Represent UPM in application data and icons
app/src/types/chart-data.ts, app/src/components/icons/*, app/src/hooks/use-history-data.ts, app/src/lib/get-icons.ts, app/src/lib/utils.ts
Application types include UPM chart, version, package-count, and process-count fields. The application maps a UPM icon and includes UPM in history extraction and leaderboard selection.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2af48

UPM support is mergeable with a narrow icon API correction or follow-up; current icon rendering is not shown to fail.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2af48

Adding UPM expands the set of third-party tools run by default in benchmark CI. It does not grant the tool new permissions, but the tool runs in a job that can use credentials, and the version installed can change between runs.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: An unpinned new npm-registry executable is installed even when UPM is not selected for a benchmark, and is selected for benchmark execution by default. A compromised published version would run within the existing benchmark job's token-capable and, during benchmark execution, registry-credential-bearing boundary.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently attackable new dependency is the published UPM package. Its benchmark process shares a job with OIDC-token capability and a run step configured with registry secrets; AWS credential configuration is conditional on registry variations.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If a malicious UPM release is resolved as latest, setup invokes its binary and selected variations run it in the benchmark job. This is a supply-chain attack path, not evidence that the current published package is malicious.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Benchmark-manager selection gates UPM variation commands, and commands have a timeout. Neither control gates its setup installation. The workflow does not show the Benchmark environment's approval or branch restrictions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Using latest makes the executable and its script-execution behavior capable of changing without a repository change. The package's actual script policy and behavior after interrupted runs were not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Pin and verify the UPM release used by CI, make setup honor benchmark selection, and verify the chosen release's install-script policy before relying on its default.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

The upm node_modules detection block was followed by a nested 'if'
instead of 'elif' for the aube block, causing a shell syntax error
at runtime (missing fi).

Align Upm’s ref contract with its rendered element.

Upm declares an SVGSVGElement ref but attaches it to a <span>. A caller that uses the LucideIcon ref contract receives an HTMLSpanElement. The current header consumer does not pass a ref, so this is a public contract defect rather than a major application failure.

Attach the ref to the intended SVG element, or change the exported icon contract and its consumers to use an HTML span ref.
