Summary

Add a second vlt benchmark entry (vlt-npm) that uses the same vlt binary but configured to use the standard npm registry (https://registry.npmjs.org/) instead of the vlt registry (registry.vlt.io). This allows comparing vlt's performance with different registries, showing the performance advantage the vlt registry provides.

What changed

Benchmark scripts

  • scripts/variations/common.sh: Added vlt-npm to PM include list, setup/install/command variables. Setup overrides registries.npm in vlt.json via vlt config set.
  • All 10 PM variation scripts (clean, cache, lockfile, ci, etc.): Added vlt-npm entries mirroring vlt with BENCH_INCLUDE_VLT_NPM guard.
  • scripts/clean-helpers.sh: Added git checkout -- vlt.json in clean_workspace_protocol() to restore registry config between runs.
  • scripts/collect-package-count.js: Added fallback: copies vlt package count to vlt-npm when vlt-npm output logs exist (same lockfile format).
  • scripts/collect-process-count.js: Added vlt-npm-process-count.txt entry.
  • scripts/generate-chart.js: Added vlt-npm color (#666666 gray — pairs with vlt's #000000 black).
  • scripts/setup.sh: Added vlt-npm version (same binary as vlt).

CI workflow

  • .github/workflows/benchmark.yaml: Added vlt-npm to the default binaries list.

Web app

  • app/src/types/chart-data.ts: Added vlt-npm to all PM type unions and interfaces.
  • app/src/lib/utils.ts: Display name: vlt (npm registry). Added to PM filter list.
  • app/src/lib/get-icons.ts: Reuses the Vlt icon for vlt-npm.
  • app/src/hooks/use-history-data.ts: Added to PACKAGE_MANAGERS list.

CLI

  • bench: Added vlt-npm to AVAILABLE_PMS.

How it works

The only difference between vlt and vlt-npm is the registry URL:

  • vlt: Uses https://registry.vlt.io/vlt-benchmarks/npm/ (from fixture vlt.json)
  • vlt-npm: Overrides to https://registry.npmjs.org/ via vlt config set in the prepare step

The clean_workspace_protocol function now restores vlt.json from git between runs, ensuring the registry config doesn't leak between vlt and vlt-npm benchmarks.

Testing

  • All existing tests pass (benchmark-data.test.js, clean-helpers.test.js)
  • All shell scripts pass syntax check (bash -n)
  • All JS scripts pass syntax check (node -c)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Vlt using the npm registry as an option in package-manager benchmarks, with results represented in charts, leaderboards, and package and process counts.
    • Added Vlt npm benchmark runs across supported benchmark scenarios, with optional inclusion in runs.

Add a second vlt benchmark entry ('vlt-npm') that uses the same vlt
binary but configured to use the standard npm registry
(https://registry.npmjs.org/) instead of the vlt registry
(registry.vlt.io). This shows the performance advantage the vlt
registry provides.

Changes:
- Add vlt-npm to all 10 PM variation scripts (clean, cache, lockfile,
ci, etc.) with prepare/setup that overrides registries.npm in vlt.json
- Add vlt-npm to bench CLI, CI workflow matrix, and setup.sh versions
- Add vlt-npm to chart generation (color: #666666 gray, pairs with
  vlt's #000000 black)
- Add vlt-npm to app types, display name ('vlt (npm registry)'), icon
(reuses Vlt icon), and filter/leaderboard/history lists
- Restore vlt.json in clean_workspace_protocol to prevent registry
  config leaking between benchmark runs
- Copy vlt package count to vlt-npm in collect-package-count.js since
both use the same lockfile format

Walkthrough

The benchmark pipeline now supports vlt-npm, from benchmark selection and execution through result collection and application display. Benchmark version output, counts, chart data, and package-manager presentation include the new entry.

Changes

Vlt NPM benchmark support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Selection and shared benchmark setup
.github/workflows/benchmark.yaml, bench, scripts/variations/common.sh, scripts/clean-helpers.sh
Benchmark defaults and shared commands include vlt-npm. The workspace cleanup helper restores package.json and vlt.json independently instead of restoring packages/.
Benchmark variant execution
scripts/variations/*.sh
Benchmark variants register the vlt-npm setup and command with Hyperfine when BENCH_INCLUDE_VLT_NPM is set. The CI variant also defines a Vlt NPM CI command and install-counting command.
Version and benchmark result collection
scripts/setup.sh, scripts/collect-package-count.js, scripts/collect-process-count.js, scripts/variations/common.sh, scripts/generate-chart.js
Version output, package counts, process counts, and chart colors include vlt-npm. If separate vlt-npm counts are missing but vlt-npm output files exist, the package-count collector copies the vlt count data.
Application package-manager data
app/src/types/chart-data.ts, app/src/hooks/use-history-data.ts, app/src/lib/get-icons.ts, app/src/lib/utils.ts
Types, history extraction, icon mapping, route handling, and display-name mapping include vlt-npm.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 22796

A vlt-npm-only run also benchmarks vlt, producing results beyond the requested selection. Fix exact selection before merging unless that behavior is explicitly accepted.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 22796

The registry comparison is a meaningful design change. A normal benchmark run can leave its npm registry setting behind, so a later Vlt run may use the wrong registry. The reviewed workflow limits the likely impact, and no credential exposure or malicious package execution was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Process-count collection can leave the project configured for public npm after a vlt-npm run. A later Vlt-labelled run in the same fixture may inherit that dependency source because its preparation does not explicitly restore the fixture registry.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported failure path affects dependency provenance and reported results within a reused benchmark fixture. The workflow's separate matrix jobs limit cross-job working-tree persistence; no broader tenant or production data-store exposure was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If a fixture is reused after vlt-npm process counting, its npm registry setting can reach a later Vlt install without a corresponding registry reset. This establishes a provenance-control concern, not a verified credential leak or malicious-package execution path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Timed clean runs restore the fixture before preparation, and variation cleanup calls clean_all. Those controls do not provide a final restore after the separate process-count loop; Git restore errors are suppressed.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Interrupted cleanup or concurrent local use could also leave or race on the project registry setting, but neither interruption behavior nor a local workspace-isolation guarantee was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make registry choice isolated to each Vlt invocation or fixture workspace, and verify restoration after process counting and on failure rather than silently accepting checkout errors.

grep -qw treats hyphens as word boundaries, so 'vlt-npm' in
BENCH_INCLUDE incorrectly matched 'vlt' as a word. Switch to
comma-delimited exact matching (grep -qF ',pm,') to prevent
cross-matching between vlt and vlt-npm.
