Summary

  • Add a stock client worker that loads mods, leases tasks, runs them on compute threads, and completes or returns work.
  • Keep worker I/O and task execution concurrent, and let workers load mods without opening a RocksDB store.
  • Add worker benchmarking options and update protocol and agent docs.

Testing

  • cargo test --workspace — passed.
  • Clippy on touched files — passed.
  • Worker tests — passed across six repeat runs.
  • cargo build -p engine — passed.
  • Client smoke run — exited with NoRunnableTaskTypes because no mods were available.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a configurable worker client that connects to a server and processes supported tasks, with options for connections, compute threads, task types, proxy settings, and task limits.
    • Workers can process derived tasks, reconnect to servers holding unfinished work, and return leases for tasks that fail or are skipped during shutdown.
    • Added client-worker benchmarking with configurable connections, threads, and per-task work duration.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded guidance on worker setup and task processing, and clarified limitations of client APIs without database access.

- Add a client binary and worker loop for leased task execution
- Pipeline lease, completion, renewal, and cancellation requests
- Support derived chunks, worker events, and client-mode benchmarks

Walkthrough

This change adds a worker runtime and client executable, makes ServerAPI usable without a database, and adds benchmark support for client workers. The worker processes regular and derived tasks and manages task leases, completion, and cancellation.

Changes: Worker client

Layer / File(s) Summary
Store-less API and transport foundations
enginelib/src/api.rs, enginelib/src/chunk.rs, enginelib/src/lib.rs, enginelib/src/task.rs, enginelib/src/transport/*, enginelib/src/nucleus/*, enginelib/tests/nucleus.rs
ServerAPI now supports an absent database and provides a db() accessor. Database operations use that accessor. Transport clients expose nonblocking reply retrieval and socket polling. Chunk utilities can decode derived records.
Worker task and lease lifecycle
enginelib/src/worker.rs, enginelib/tests/transport.rs
The worker selects supported task types, processes regular and derived task batches, and manages lease requests, renewals, completion, and cancellation. Tests cover task completion, unavailable task types, and task panics.
Client executable and benchmark mode
enginelib/src/config.rs, engine/src/bin/client.rs, engine/src/bin/bench.rs, AGENTS.md, docs/protocol.md
The client executable parses connection and worker options, starts one updater thread per connection, and coordinates shutdown. Benchmark mode can run client workers, configure per-task work time, and display server completion counts. Configuration and documentation describe the client and worker flow.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; the reconnect credential issue is fixed.

Summary

Adds a mod-backed worker that leases tasks, runs them on compute threads, and sends results while keeping server I/O moving.

  • Workers run supported mod tasks and send their results back to the server.
  • The client runs mods without opening a local database.
  • The benchmark can measure task work through client workers.

Count failed Complete sends as attempts.

The server applies the default 64 MiB max_message_bytes limit to the ROUTER that receives Complete. A Complete contains a vector of results. Per-result max_result checks and the lease task-count limit do not impose an aggregate byte limit. A valid batch can therefore exceed the inbound limit and lose its connection before receiving a reply.

The worker then clears sending, reconnects, and resends the same batch without increasing attempts. Renewals keep its leases alive. Count these failures so the existing MAX_COMPLETE_ATTEMPTS limit can terminate the loop. Changing lost_at on reconnect is not required for this failure path.

A proxy-issued ticket replaces auth.challenge in connect_via_proxy, but
reconnecting to the server holding the worker's leases sent the original
auth, so a server requiring the ticket refused it until the leases expired.
Client::auth() exposes the accepted credentials and the client binary reuses
them for that server.
