**Marfa doesn't upgrade a database in place.** A build refuses a database whose schema differs from its own, or that holds retired tables or settings, and leaves the file unchanged; a version change alone doesn't cause a refusal. [Upgrade](/guides/upgrade) shows how to test an export and restore on fresh storage before switching builds.

## v0.0.28

Released October 23, 2026. [v0.0.28 on GitHub](https://github.com/withmarfa/marfa/releases/tag/v0.0.28)

**This release fixes the folder watch, which runs in the CLI, so upgrade the CLI to get the fix.** The server's database, the API and the working copy keep the shapes they had in v0.0.27, so an instance needs no export to upgrade.

For folders:

- **A sync no longer writes back a file you moved or deleted while it ran.** A pass scans the folder, sends what it found, then pulls. A file the scan read that is gone when the pull reaches its item was written back to its old path, so a moved file returned as a copy that became a second item, and a deleted file returned. The pull now leaves the file unwritten, counts it as unwritten and names it in the report, and the next scan decides: a moved file keeps its item, and a deleted file's item goes to the bin after the five-second grace. A file you delete before the folder first writes its `marfa_id` line into it keeps its delete the same way. A file gone from a path a scan no longer reaches, such as one the folder's `ignore` list now leaves out, is still written where its item wants it, because no scan can tell a move from a delete there. See [What removes a file or an item](/guides/folder-safeguards#what-removes-a-file-or-an-item).
