secondaryAuth can't finish logging in: GSA rejects POST /auth/verify/phone/put?mode=sms with HTTP 403 ("Could not connect to iCloud"). The JSON flavor of those endpoints (GET /auth, PUT /auth/verify/phone/) answers 401 as well.

GsService2/validate still accepts a code generated on a trusted device (Settings > Sign-In & Security > Get Verification Code), so ask for one instead of failing. Tested on WSL (Ubuntu 26.04) with an iOS 27 device.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Two-factor authentication can fall back to a trusted device when an SMS request returns HTTP 403.
    • If trusted-device authentication also returns HTTP 403, users receive instructions for manually generating a verification code, and code validation can continue. Other errors are still reported.

📝 Walkthrough

The two-factor authentication operation now handles HTTP 403 responses from SMS and trusted-device requests with fallback instructions and code validation. Other errors continue to propagate.

Changes: Two-factor authentication fallbacks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Handle authentication request failures
Sources/XKit/GrandSlam/Operations/GrandSlamTwoFactorAuthenticateOperation.swift
If the SMS request returns HTTP 403, the operation attempts trusted-device authentication. If the trusted-device request returns HTTP 403, it prints instructions for manually generating a verification code and continues to code validation. Other errors propagate.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 032d4

The change adds trusted-device and manual-code fallbacks for 403 responses. No concrete harmful impact beyond that intended fallback is established, so merge risk is minimal.

Thanks! This seems like a reasonable workaround. I updated the copy because the "Generate code" option isn't always there depending on your device/OS.

Restrict the fallbacks to the reported delivery failure.

Both catches match every HTTPResponseError with status code 403. A different 403 can trigger the trusted-device fallback or suppress the trusted-device request error. Check error.body for the reported “Could not connect to iCloud” response, and rethrow other 403 responses. Confirm that both endpoints use the same response body before sharing the check.
