Possibly related issues
- NVIDIA/Megatron-LM#5676 — The PR adds fake-quant export through Megatron-Bridge, extending the conversion path described by this roadmap issue.
- NVIDIA/NemoClaw#7899 — The export writes KV-cache quantizer sidecars for the vLLM fake-quant serving script, but it does not address the issue’s stock-vLLM name mapping.
Possibly related PRs
- NVIDIA/Model-Optimizer#2981 — Both changes preserve KV-cache quantization state during export, though this PR uses the Megatron-Bridge fake-quant path.

Full details: Title check
-
Explanation
The title "[2/2] Export vLLM fake-quant checkpoints through Megatron-Bridge" matches the main change. The PR adds a Megatron-Bridge path for
--vllm_fakequant_export, which folds weight quantizers, saves BF16 weights, and writes sidecars for the vLLM fake-quant serving script. The "[2/2]" prefix marks this as the second part of a series. It does not describe the supporting changes tomtq.fold_weight, SVDQuant folding, or the CI action, but the title does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Security Anti-Patterns
-
Explanation
No listed security anti-pattern was introduced. The changed Python code has no added torch.load(..., weights_only=False), numpy.load(..., allow_pickle=True), hardcoded trust_remote_code=True, eval(), exec(), or # nosec. The exporter passes the caller-controlled trust_remote_code value. No pyproject.toml or requirements file changed, so no new dependency license issue applies.

…ns (#2911) ### What does this PR do? Type of change: Bug fix The default PTQ exclusions (`configs/ptq/units/default_disabled_quantizers`, imported by the `general/ptq/*` recipes and `mtq.*_CFG` presets) disable multi-token-prediction layers with `mtp.*`, which only matches an MTP block at the model root (HF checkpoints, Megatron LLMs). Megatron vision-language models nest it under the language model (`language_model.mtp.layers.0...`), so their MTP layers were quantized. For Qwen3.5/3.6 VLMs quantized with `examples/megatron_bridge/quantize.py` and a general recipe, `export_quantized_megatron_to_hf.py --vllm_fakequant_export` then refuses the checkpoint ("MTP quantization is not supported by vLLM fakequant export/reload"). The pattern is now `*mtp.*`, matching the model-specific recipes that already use `*mtp*`. Models whose MTP block was nested and previously quantized by a general recipe now keep it in BF16, which is what the exclusion intends. Recipes that quantize MTP on purpose (e.g. the Nemotron 3.5 Super ones) do not import this unit after their MTP entries, so they are unaffected. ### Usage No API change. ### Testing - New `tests/unit/recipe/test_presets.py::test_default_exclusions_disable_mtp_at_any_depth`: with `general/ptq/fp8_default-kv_fp8`, MTP quantizers at the root and under `language_model.` are disabled and decoder quantizers stay enabled; fails without the change. - `tests/unit/recipe`: 492 passed. - Found while validating vLLM fake-quant export of Qwen3.6-35B-A3B (#2889): the default `nvfp4_default-kv_fp8` checkpoint was refused on `language_model.mtp.layers.0.eh_proj.input_quantizer`. ### Before your PR is "*Ready for review*" - Is this change backward compatible?: ✅ (nested MTP layers that a general recipe used to quantize now stay in BF16, as the exclusion intends) - If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP dependency, did you follow guidance in `CONTRIBUTING.md`: N/A - Did you write any new necessary tests?: ✅ - Did you update [Changelog](https://github.com/NVIDIA/Model-Optimizer/blob/main/CHANGELOG.rst)?: ✅ - Did you get Claude approval on this PR?: ❌ ### Additional Information Related to #2889 (vLLM fake-quant export through Megatron-Bridge). 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> <!-- coderabbit-ai-generated:v1 --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **Bug Fixes** * Corrected default post-training quantization recipes for Megatron vision-language models so MTP layers remain unquantized consistently, including nested language-model layers. * Preserved quantization behavior for unrelated decoder projection layers. * Added regression coverage to verify both root-level and nested MTP exclusions in the default FP8 recipe. * **Documentation** * Added a changelog entry for the 0.49.0 bug fix. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> Signed-off-by: Keval Morabia <28916987+kevalmorabia97@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Changes requested: sequential weight quantizers pass validation but are not folded by the new Bridge export path.
Needs action:
- Fix sequential weight folding in
export_vllm_fakequant, or reject it collectively before mutation; add a regression test comparing exported weights with the sequential QDQ result (see inline comment).
No action needed:
- The Bridge design is justified by architecture, VLM, and parallelism coverage versus extending the existing exporter.
- Existing test edits add coverage without weakening assertions. The new test’s NVIDIA header matches
LICENSE_HEADER. - Tests were inspected, not executed.

LGTM: the prior sequential-folding bug is resolved with regression coverage; human sign-off remains for the justified existing-test edits.
Needs action:
- Confirm the existing-test extensions in
tests/examples/megatron_bridge: assertions remain intact, sidecar checks require a capable Bridge, and the timeout increase accommodates the added export.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: sequential weights now fold through both generic and TE grouped-linear paths; CPU QDQ and bitwise exporter-comparison tests cover the fix.
- Bridge reuse is justified by architecture, VLM, and TP/EP/PP coverage versus extending the old exporter.
- Buffer cleanup preserves SVDQuant corrections; the new NVIDIA header matches
LICENSE_HEADER. - Tests were inspected, not executed.

…2888) ### What does this PR do? Type of change: new feature, bug fix vLLM fake-quant serving reloads a versioned `quant_recipe.yaml`: ```yaml format: modelopt_quantizer_recipe version: 1 quantizers: model.layers.0.self_attn.q_proj.input_quantizer: {...} # get_modelopt_state(properties_only=True) ``` Megatron-Bridge's Hugging Face export of a fake-quantized model will write this file next to `quantizer_state.pth` (NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565), so `vllm_serve_fakequant.py <export_dir>` picks both up automatically (OMNIML-6019). `TensorQuantizer.attribute_config_from_modelopt_state` inverts `set_from_attribute_config` for a properties-only state, so the reload restores every quantizer attribute (e.g. `use_constant_amax`, `unsigned`, dynamic `type`) instead of a fixed subset of five. The flat recipe written by ModelOpt's Megatron exporter still loads; its `_backend` keys map the same way. It also fixes reloading quantizer ranges into modules vLLM registers under two names. vLLM 0.31 registers an MoE layer's shared expert both as `mlp.shared_expert` and inside its runner as `mlp.experts._shared_experts._layer`, so the state dict lists the shared expert's quantizers twice. `load_state_dict_from_path` updated only the first name, and `model.load_state_dict` then copied the stale second entry back: every shared-expert input range silently kept the one-sample calibration done before loading, behind a spurious "missing from every rank" warning. The loaded range is now copied to every name of the module, whichever name the checkpoint uses and whichever comes first in `named_modules()`; a range missing under all names still warns. ### Usage ```python state = quantizer.get_modelopt_state(properties_only=True) cfg = TensorQuantizer.attribute_config_from_modelopt_state(state) # QuantizerAttributeConfig fields ``` ### Testing - Unit: YAML round trip of NVFP4, FP8 constant-amax KV, dynamic int8 (unsigned, narrow range), custom backend and disabled quantizers restores the same properties-only state. - `tests/examples/vllm_serve/test_fakequant_example.py`: a versioned recipe restores a constant-amax FP8 KV quantizer and leaves unlisted quantizers disabled; an unknown version, and a versioned recipe with an empty or malformed `quantizers` mapping, are rejected as quantizer recipes (not passed to the PTQ recipe parser); a quantizer registered under two module names keeps the loaded range in either registration order (fails without the fix). - `tests/examples/vllm_serve` and `tests/gpu_vllm` (vLLM 0.29.1): all pass except failures that also fail on main in the same container (missing optional packages, pytest timeouts). - End to end with NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565 and #2889, scoring 64 CNN/DailyMail test articles (first 512 tokens each) and comparing the negative log-likelihood (NLL) per token across engines: - Qwen3-0.6B NVFP4 W4A4 + FP8 KV: `vllm_serve_fakequant.py <dir>` (no flags) gives greedy generations identical to the export from ModelOpt's Megatron exporter (8/8 prompts, max |Δ logprob| 0.0). - NVIDIA-Nemotron-Nano-9B-v2 NVFP4 W4A4 + FP8 KV: vLLM fake-quant NLL 2.3467 vs 2.3465 in Megatron (BF16: 2.2990 vs 2.2987); 8/8 greedy generations identical to the old exporter's checkpoint. - Qwen3.6-35B-A3B (vLLM 0.31, GB300; NVFP4 W4A4 MoE, FP8 attention and GatedDeltaNet projections, FP8 KV): before the alias fix all 80 shared-expert ranges were wrong (layer 0: 20.0 / 5.34 instead of 22.25 / 6.97); after it every range matches the export. Each quantizer group alone matches Megatron within ±0.004 NLL (e.g. routed experts 2.2892 vs 2.2887, shared experts 2.2895 vs 2.2886). - An internal quantization format whose KV-cache quantizers use a custom `backend` with `backend_extra_args`: the recipe keeps both, vLLM restores them on all KV quantizers (NLL 6.491 vs 6.504 in Megatron), and serving without the backend's plugin fails with `Quant backend '...' is not registered` instead of dropping it. ### Before your PR is "*Ready for review*" - Is this change backward compatible?: ✅ (flat recipes still load) - If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP dependency, did you follow guidance in `CONTRIBUTING.md`: N/A - Did you write any new necessary tests?: ✅ - Did you update [Changelog](https://github.com/NVIDIA/Model-Optimizer/blob/main/CHANGELOG.rst)?: N/A (user-facing entry comes with the Megatron-Bridge export PR) - Did you get Claude approval on this PR?: ❌ ### Additional Information Merge before NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565, which starts writing the versioned recipe. …n pruning and Puzzletron (#2922) ### What does this PR do? Type of change: Compatibility update (newer Megatron-Core / Megatron-Bridge) Makes Minitron pruning of Mamba hybrid models and Puzzletron distillation work with newer Megatron-Core / Megatron-Bridge. The NeMo 26.10 container ships these changes. Without this PR, 4 Megatron GPU or example tests fail there, while they pass on nemo:26.08. Each fix is a no-op on the older versions, and none is a shim to drop once nemo:26.10 is the minimum: the newer MCore needs all of them, and the `hasattr` checks also tell GPT models (`TransformerBlock`) apart from hybrid ones. - **Mamba decode cache** (`_DynamicMambaMixer`): `MambaMixer` keeps a per-head `-exp(A_log)` cache that newer MCore refreshes on every `eval()`. Once pruning shrinks the active heads, the refresh fails with `The size of tensor a (8) must match the size of tensor b (6)`. The cache is now resized to the active heads in `train()` and after `export()`. - **Hybrid depth pruning** (`drop_mcore_language_model_layers`): newer `HybridStack` keeps `layer_config_list` and its execution lists index-aligned with `layers`, and its forward zips them with `strict=True`. Dropping layers now slices them too, and `_temporarily_pruned` restores them after scoring a candidate. Grouped shortcut-MoE blocks are rejected before anything is mutated. - **Per-layer configs** (`MCoreMinitronSearcher._prune`): each hybrid layer now holds its own copy of the config. The pruned architecture is now written to those copies as well as `model.config`. Megatron-Bridge's Mamba `in_proj` export reads the layer's config, so before this fix exporting a pruned Nemotron-H hit a device-side index-out-of-bounds. - **Puzzletron provider** (`HeterogeneousBridgeMixin.provider_bridge`): newer Megatron-Bridge derives `gtp_weight_remat_size` in `__post_init__` (`init=False`), so only fields the constructor accepts are passed. This unblocks testing ModelOpt's Megatron CI against a newer Megatron-Bridge before nemo:26.10 is out (planned on top of #2889). ### Testing Run with a newer Megatron-Bridge (and its Megatron-LM submodule) on nemo:26.08: `src/megatron/bridge` and `3rdparty/Megatron-LM/megatron` replaced from Megatron-Bridge main + NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565: - Before this PR: - `tests/examples/megatron_bridge`: 98 passed, 2 failed (`test_distill_puzzletron_anymodel`, `test_prune_minitron[nemotron_h]`). - `tests/gpu_megatron`: 448 passed, 4 failed. `test_mcore_hybrid_pruning_nas_params` was the real failure; the other 3 were OOMs from GPU contention and pass when rerun alone. - With this PR: - `tests/gpu_megatron/torch/{prune,nas}`: 62 passed. - `test_prune_minitron[nemotron_h]` and `test_distill_puzzletron_anymodel`: pass. - Reverting each Megatron fix makes its test fail again: `test_mamba_search_space`, `test_mcore_hybrid_pruning_nas_params`, `test_prune_minitron[nemotron_h]`. The existing tests cover these paths once CI runs a newer MCore, so no new tests. Stock nemo:26.08, with this PR: - `tests/gpu_megatron/torch/{prune,nas}`: 62 passed. - `tests/examples/megatron_bridge/test_prune_minitron.py` and `test_distill.py`: 19 passed. Not run: the nemo:26.10 container itself (its rc has the same Megatron-Core changes), and the full `tests/gpu_megatron` with this PR. ### Before your PR is "*Ready for review*" - Is this change backward compatible?: ✅ - If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP dependency, did you follow guidance in `CONTRIBUTING.md`: N/A - Did you write any new necessary tests?: N/A (existing tests cover the paths on a newer MCore) - Did you update [Changelog](https://github.com/NVIDIA/Model-Optimizer/blob/main/CHANGELOG.rst)?: N/A (compatibility update) - Did you get Claude approval on this PR?: ❌ ### Additional Information Related: #2889 (Megatron-Bridge fake-quant export, whose CI bump depends on this), NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> <!-- coderabbit-ai-generated:v1 --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **Bug Fixes** * Improved Mamba model training and export by keeping decode-cache state aligned with model dimensions. * Improved pruning of hybrid-stack models by keeping layer and execution metadata consistent, including when temporary pruning is restored. * Fixed provider setup to avoid passing fields that are not accepted during provider construction. * **Compatibility** * Grouped hybrid layers are not supported for layer dropping. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> --------- Signed-off-by: Keval Morabia <28916987+kevalmorabia97@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

export_quantized_megatron_to_hf.py --vllm_fakequant_export now checks the quantizers, folds the weight quantizers into BF16 weights and saves with bridge.save_hf_pretrained, which writes the enabled activation and KV-cache quantizers to quantizer_state.pth and a versioned quant_recipe.yaml under HF names for vllm_serve_fakequant.py. - Any TP / EP / PP (new --tp_size, fake-quant only) and every architecture Megatron-Bridge maps; a VLM's language-model-only QAD checkpoint keeps the HF vision tower. - Weight-only formats (e.g. GGML IQ2) get no sidecars and serve with stock vLLM. - check_mcore_vllm_fakequant_quantizers shares the existing exporter's checks. - Tests: parity with export_mcore_gpt_to_hf_vllm_fq (tiny Qwen3, Nemotron-H), export parallelism invariance (Qwen3.5-VL-MoE EP, Nemotron-H PP), and a fake-quant export step in the QAD example test. They skip without a Megatron-Bridge that writes the sidecars. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Keval Morabia <28916987+kevalmorabia97@users.noreply.github.com>
mtq.fold_weight bakes the weight quantizer into the weight, so any state the quantizer keeps to re-derive that weight (e.g. a pinned GGML payload) is stale afterwards. Dropping all of its buffers, not only _amax and _pre_quant_scale, lets Megatron-Bridge save a folded IQ2 model without unmapped quantizer tensors. Folding now drops every weight-quantizer buffer, which included the SVDQuant LoRA factors that SVDQuantLinear.fold_weight read afterwards, so the folded weight silently lost the low-rank correction. Read the factors before folding. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Keval Morabia <28916987+kevalmorabia97@users.noreply.github.com>
test_mlflow_utils requires a single args.checkpoint_exported = True per save; the vLLM fake-quant branch added a second one. Move the unified export into export_unified_hf so both paths share it. fold_weight skipped SequentialQuantizer weight quantizers, so the Megatron-Bridge fake-quant export saved W4A8 weights unquantized. Fold the whole chain, member by member in the weight dtype as the forward pass does, then disable and clean each member. The export now matches the Megatron exporter bitwise for W4A8 too. …ests test_quantize_and_export now also exports each quantized checkpoint with --vllm_fakequant_export (EP, TP and PP across its three cases) instead of a separate test quantizing three more models; test_qad keeps the fake-quant export only for the VLM, the one case only QAD produces. The parity test keeps one NVFP4 + FP8 KV case and the W4A8 case. export_mcore_gpt_to_hf_vllm_fq now runs check_mcore_vllm_fakequant_quantizers up front, as the Megatron-Bridge path does, instead of collecting the same MTP, lm_head and unsupported-setting failures during the export. The check reports MTP and lm_head quantizers before their individual settings. Overlay a pinned Megatron-Bridge commit and its Megatron-LM on every CI job that runs in a NeMo container, so the fake-quant export tests run before a NeMo container ships it. The tests no longer skip without the quantizer sidecars, so an older Megatron-Bridge fails them instead of skipping them silently. The README shows how to mount the same commit. Approve on the CI part
The CI jobs now run newer Megatron-Core, whose GPTModel.sharded_state_dict also accepts an empty tensor placeholder. Its body no longer matched the one keep_gpt_output_layer_extra_state recognises, so the patch was skipped and a quantized output_layer could not be checkpointed. Recognise both bodies. Skip test_layerwise_calibrate_vlm_text_forward_loop and test_fp8_real_quantize on Blackwell like the other tests that hit the flaky CUDA illegal memory access there; CI hit it in a different one of them on each of three runs. What does this PR do?
Type of change: new feature
examples/megatron_bridge/export_quantized_megatron_to_hf.py --vllm_fakequant_exportnow exports through Megatron-Bridge instead of ModelOpt's Megatron exporter: it checks the quantizers, folds the weight quantizers into BF16 weights (mtq.fold_weight) and callsbridge.save_hf_pretrained. Megatron-Bridge writes the enabled activation and KV-cache quantizers toquantizer_state.pthand a versionedquant_recipe.yamlunder HF names, whichvllm_serve_fakequant.py <dir>loads automatically. This is how the numerics team evaluates QAD checkpoints in vLLM (OMNIML-6019).What the Megatron-Bridge path adds over the old exporter:
--tp_sizeis new and only allowed with this flag), and every architecture Megatron-Bridge maps;vllm serveloads the export.mtq.fold_weightnow drops every buffer of a folded weight quantizer (e.g. a pinned GGML payload), not only_amax/_pre_quant_scale; otherwise Megatron-Bridge could not save a folded IQ2 model.SVDQuantLinear.fold_weightreads its low-rank factors (also buffers of the weight quantizer) before folding, so SVDQuant folds keep their correction term.mtq.fold_weightalso folds sequential weight quantizers (e.g. W4A8 INT4 + FP8 weights), which it used to skip, leaving them unfolded and enabled.check_mcore_vllm_fakequant_quantizerscollects the existing exporter's checks (unsupported activation settings, MTP andlm_headquantization) so both paths reject the same inputs before anything is written.Builds on #2888 (vLLM reload of the versioned recipe, merged); #2873 added the flag on the old exporter. Needs a Megatron-Bridge with NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565 (merged, not yet in a NeMo container); the script raises a clear error otherwise. The tests do not skip on an older Megatron-Bridge, so CI cannot silently stop covering the export.
CI: the new
.github/actions/megatron-from-sourceaction replaces the nemo:26.08 container's Megatron-Bridge and Megatron-Core sources with Megatron-Bridge1d9caf7324(#6565's merge commit) and its pinned Megatron-LM in every CI job that runs in a NeMo container (today thegpu_megatronGPU tests and themegatron_bridgeexample tests), so the new tests run in CI. Remove it once a NeMo container includes #6565. The Pre-Requisites inexamples/megatron_bridge/README.mdshow the same checkout and mounts for running locally.Usage

Ran in nemo:26.10.rc3 with NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565, 2× RTX 6000 Ada, unless noted:
tests/gpu_megatron/torch/export/test_vllm_fakequant_mbridge_export.py(new): tiny Nemotron-H (NVFP4 + FP8 KV) and Qwen3 (W4A8, sequential weight quantizers) exported both ways match the old exporter (weights bitwise, ranges equal, recipe a superset of the old recipe's settings).test_quantize_export.py::test_quantize_and_exportalso exports each checkpoint it already quantizes with--vllm_fakequant_export, at EP (Qwen3-MoE, per-expert names), TP (Qwen3-VL, vision tower bit-exact) and PP (Nemotron-H).test_qad.pyadds that export only for the Qwen3.5-VL-MoE case (packed experts), since only QAD saves a VLM's language model alone. With 2 GPUs: 6 passed in 25 min (slowest case 386 s).test_tensor_quant_cpu.py::test_fold_weight_folds_sequential_weight_quantizer(new) fails without the sequential fold.test_tensor_quant_cpu.py::test_fold_weight_folds_svdquant_lora(new) fails without the SVDQuant change;test_unified_hf_export_and_check_safetensors(incl.nvfp4_svdquant) passes.tests/unit,tests/gpu/torch/{quantization,export},tests/gpu_megatron/torch/{export,quantization},tests/gpu_vllm,tests/examples/{megatron_bridge,vllm_serve}: no new failures; the remaining failures also fail on main in the same container (missing optional packages, transformers/torch API drift, pytest timeouts).1d9caf7324installed the way the new action does it:tests/gpu_megatron/torch/export139 passed;tests/examples/megatron_bridge(test_quantize_export.py,test_qad.py,test_mlflow_utils.py) 81 passed andtest_distill.py21 passed;tests/gpu_megatron/torch/{prune,nas}62 passed;tests/examples/vllm_serve120 passed, withtest_convert_ggml_to_int8erroring as it does on main (the container's vLLM has no WNA16 kernel). On Qwen3.6 the three engines see the same 410 quantizers and ranges; with the MoE layers quantized to NVFP4, tiny kernel differences flip expert routing, which is where the 0.016 spread comes from (per-token |Δ| ≈ 0.2 with the MoE quantized vs 0.07–0.1 without).
vllm serveloads the export; Megatron logits are bitwise identical before and after folding.backendandbackend_extra_args: both survive export and vLLM reload. Before your PR is "Ready for review"
--vllm_fakequant_export(added in Megatron-Bridge: GGML PTQ, QAD and fake-quant export for large MoE and VLM models #2873, unreleased) now needs a Megatron-Bridge with the quantizer sidecars (feat(quant)!: write ModelOpt quantizer sidecars for fake-quant HF export NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565).CONTRIBUTING.md: N/AAdditional Information
NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6565 and #2888 are merged. OMNIML-6019.
Known limits found while testing (unchanged by this PR): MTP and
lm_headactivation quantization cannot be reloaded by vLLM fake quant, so the export refuses them. The general PTQ recipes quantized the MTP layers of Megatron VLMs by mistake; #2911 fixed that.vllm_serve_fakequant.pystill runs a one-sample calibration before loading the sidecars, so offline clusters need--modelopt-quant-dataset <local jsonl>.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
